Ookla Q3 report names Telus Canada’s fastest mobile operator

Telus has kept its crown as Canada’s fastest mobile operator, according to a slew of new statistics in Ookla’s Q3 Canada Market Report for 2021.

For context, Ookla is the owner and operator of Speedtest.net, a free web service that analyzes your Internet’s performance.

According to data gathered from its speed-tracking tool, Ookla says Telus was the fastest mobile operator in Canada during Q3 2021, with a ‘Speed Score’ of 81.93.

Shaw came out on top as the country’s fastest fixed broadband provider, while the title of fastest 5G went to Bell for its median 5G download speed of 183.39 Mbps, narrowly beating Telus’ 176.38 Mbps.

Meanwhile, Vidéotron kept it steady for yet another fiscal quarter, earning the title of Canada’s most consistent mobile operator in Q3 with a score of 87.4 percent

In terms of geography, Ookla found that Newfoundland and Labrador are Canada’s fastest regions for both fixed broadband and mobile, clocking in a median download speed of 124.22 Mbps

Calgary was named the city with the highest population with the best median fixed broadband download speed (134.33 Mbps), while Halifax won the mobile download speed category (113.10 Mbps).

Finally, the report claims that while Samsung devices earned the fastest combined performance scores in Q3 with a median download speed of 64.14 Mbps, edging out Apple’s 58.12 Mbps, the iPhone 13 Pro Max was the fastest popular device overall with a median download speed of 164.63 Mbps.

Past Ookla reports from 2021 found that Canada is no longer among the top 10 fastest countries for internet speeds, that 5G speeds in Ottawa are middling compared to other capital cities, that Alberta’s Waterton Lakes National Park boasts the fastest download speeds amoung Canada’s national parks, and that SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service performs best in Saskatchewan.

Freedom Mobile raises connection fee to $45

Freedom Mobile is increasing the fee it charges when customers activate a new phone line.

Starting today, October 18th, the carrier’s Connection Fee — a one-time charge applied to each new line activation — jumps from $35 to $45.

That adds up to a $10 — and nearly 29 percent — jump in price.

According to a report from iPhone in Canada, Freedom Mobile claims the fee hike will fund service and network improvements.

Freedom Mobile first began charging customers connection fees (also known as activation fees) in December 2019.

Initially, the carrier charged $20 on the first bill for new postpaid activations, and $10 for prepaid activations — less than half of what’s being charged now, just two years later.

Connection/Activation fees are going up across the board.

In 2020, from September to November, BellFidoKoodoRogers, Telus, Virgin ($40→$45), and Freedom ($20→$30) all increased their fees.

Most recently, in July 2021, another wave of hikes kicked off, as Telus, Koodo, Rogers, and Fido all further jacked up their connection fees to $50 (FYI: Fido is owned by Rogers, and Telus owns Koodo).

Intel CEO wants to win Apple back by making a ‘better chip than they can’

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger is hoping to win back Apple’s business.

In an interview with Ina Fried, Axios’ chief technology correspondent, on Axios on HBO, Gelsinger discussed his ‘plan’ for getting Apple back. You can basically sum up the plan as ‘make better chips than Apple.’

Watch the clip in the video embedded below, or check out the transcription for Gelsinger’s full answer:

“Fried: Recently Apple said they’re moving from Intel chips on the Mac to homegrown processors. Have you given up on the idea of the Mac running on Intel chips?

Gelsinger: I never give up on the idea of anything not running on Intel chips. And, you know, hey, you know, our stumbles, you know, Apple decided they could do a better chip themselves than we could. And, you know, they did a pretty good job. So what I have to do is create a better chip than they can do themselves. I would hope to win back this piece of their business, as well as many other pieces of business, over time. And in the meantime, I got to make sure that our products are better than theirs, that my ecosystem is more open and vibrant than theirs, and we create more compelling reason for developers and users to land on Intel-based products. So, I’m going to fight hard to win Tim’s business in this area.”

For some added context, Apple began to transition its computers away from Intel’s chips in June 2020. In place of Intel chips, Apple started developing and using its own processors based on ARM designs, similar to what’s used in smartphones and tablets (including Apple’s iPhone and iPad). The first such chip, dubbed the ‘M1,’ has appeared in MacBooks, iMacs, Mac minis and the iPad Pro line. Further, the company is expected to unveil new computers at an event on October 18th featuring a new version of the chip, possibly called ‘M1X’ or ‘M2.’

The thing is, making a better chip is easier said than done — and even if Intel manages to do it, I’m not sure that’ll be enough to win back Apple. Aside from the performance and battery life benefits of the switch to its own ARM-based silicon, Apple is also able to more tightly control its hardware and software stack by using its own chips. I don’t see Apple giving that up just because Intel’s chips manage to pull ahead in performance.

Plus, Intel has been pumping out some pretty terrible, desperate-feeling ads that try to dunk on Apple by touting the “benefits” of Intel chips — benefits that often have little to do with Intel’s chips.

The one upside to Gelsinger’s comment is that hopefully in Intel’s effort to win Apple back, it creates some truly excellent products for Windows users. Intel’s started to lag behind the competition and with AMD’s CPU division firing on all cylinders, Intel’s going to have to step up its game to keep its CPU crown.

Leaked Ikea speaker has built-in Spotify ‘Tap Button’

A new lamp/speaker hybrid appears to be coming from Ikea, and this time, it looks like the company is partnering with Spotify instead of Sonos.

The tiny speaker/lamp includes a few fun features like a 20-lumen light and an IP67 water/dust resistance rating. However, the most intriguing part of the device is a new ‘Spotify Tap’ button that starts playing music from where you left off when pressed.

This feature has been available with several wireless earbuds in the past, making it possible to touch and hold on to them to instantly begin playing music or podcasts from Spotify. If the leaked Ikea speaker is real, it will likely be the first portable speaker to include the feature.

The speaker will be called ‘Vappeby,’ according to its FCC filing. The filing also confirms that battery life will last for 13 hours if the volume and brightness are both set to medium.

I like the concept of the Spotify Connect button, and since the speaker seems like it will work via regular Bluetooth connections too. However, it’s a smart move for Spotify that will likely make it just that much more prevalent and easy to access for people who own this new lamp.

Pixel 5 reportedly on sale for $399 at London Drugs locations

London Drugs (LD) is reportedly offering the Pixel 5 for $399.99.

Available only in-store, the discount appears to be a part of LD’s clearance sale, according to RedFlagDeals user, ‘blahraptors.’

LD’s website doesn’t list the Pixel 5, neither does it have any promotional material regarding the sale. According to ‘blahraptors,’ you need to go to an LD store and ask for item number 1293981. Searching the product number on LD’s website brings up some kind of makeup, so trying to get the deal online is futile.

‘blahraptors’s‘ post also suggests that LD recently had the Pixel 4a listed for $199.99.

It’s worth noting that LD stores are located in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba only. Find the nearest store to you here.

For more on the Pixel 5, check out Dean Daley’s review of the smartphone.

Squid Game worth almost $900 million USD according to Netflix estimate

Squid Game has proven popular for Netflix — so much so, the company reportedly expects the show will create almost $900 million USD (roughly $1.1 billion CAD) in value for it.

The figure comes from documents seen by Bloomberg. Those documents also give a peek inside how Netflix evaluates its content, something the company has previously been secretive about. As Bloomberg points out, Netflix doesn’t generate sales on specific titles like traditional movie studios and TV networks. Instead, Netflix rolls out new content to keep subscribers paying and to entice new customers.

Because of that, Netflix gathers a lot of data about what subscribers watch and uses that data to derive value from the content it makes. For example, the Netflix document cited by Bloomberg notes that Squid Game generated $891.1 million in “impact value.” Netflix uses that metric to assess the performance of individual shows.

Further, Squid Game cost Netflix just $21.4 million USD (about $26.5 million CAD) to make, or about $2.4 million USD per episode.

A Netflix attorney told Bloomberg in a letter that it would be “inappropriate” for it to publicize the confidential data contained in the document, explaining that the streaming giant “does not discuss these metrics outside the company.”

Netflix document details “value” of Squid Game

Bloomberg says that some figures from the document are self-explanatory and mirror information shared by other companies. For example, roughly 132 million people have watched at least two minutes of Squid Game in the show’s first 23 days, beating the record set by Netflix’s Bridgerton.

Although Netflix releases the two-minute metric to the public, it hasn’t disclosed how many people watched more than two minutes or how many people completed the show. Bloomberg explains that the two-minute measurement can make Netflix’s numbers look inflated compared to traditional TV shows, which report the average number of people that watch a show for its duration.

However, Netflix does estimate that 89 percent of people who started Squid Game watched at least 75 minutes (more than one episode), while 66 percent of viewers (87 million people) finished the series in the first 23 days. All told, people have spent more than 1.4 billion hours watching the show.

Other metrics found in the document are less clear, and Bloomberg says it’s uncertain what data Netflix uses to calculate the metrics. Squid Game reportedly scored 353 points in Netflix’s adjusted view share (AVS) metric. Bloomberg explains that AVS measures both how many people watch the show and how “valuable” those viewers are. For example, new customers and existing subscribers who don’t use the service often are considered more valuable because the content they watch indicates what drew them to the service or kept them subscribed.

Moreover, Squid Game’s value is increased in part due to its low cost to make. The show cost less than the recent Dave Chappelle special and less than making a few episodes of The Crown. Netflix has an “efficiency” metric that considers AVS relative to cost — Squid Game scored 47.7x in the efficiency metric, while the Chappelle special Sticks & Stones scored 0.8x, according to Bloomberg. Netflix considers a score of 1.0x “solid.”
