Nintendo’s Switch OLED model is now available

If you’ve been eagerly awaiting Nintendo’s Switch OLED model, your time has finally arrived.

The Japanese gaming giant’s incremental update to its home console-portable hybrid system is now available online and in-store at several retailers, including Best Buy, The Source, GameStop and more for $449.

It’s important to note that the OLED Switch might already be sold out at some retailers due to significant pre-order demand. For example, Shoppers Drug Mart recently tweeted that it will have the OLED Switch in stock in-store “following Thanksgiving.”

To put the refreshed console’s cost in perspective, this is $70 more than $379 standard Switch and $190 more expensive than the handheld-only Switch Lite.

While the OLED Switch’s display is undeniably great looking, the new version of the system is very similar to the first Switch beyond slightly better speakers and a better kickstand. In fact, Nintendo didn’t even update the OLED Switch’s Joy-Cons to solve the dreaded drift issue.

For more on the Switch OLED model, check out my review of the handheld. The Switch OLED model starts at $449.

EA might drop the ‘FIFA’ tag from its soccer titles

EA may no longer make soccer games with “FIFA” in their titles.

In a new blog post titled “Comments on the Future of Football,” EA talks about FIFA 22‘s record-breaking launch of over 9.1 million players enjoying the title.

However, at the bottom of the post, EA says, “we’re also exploring the idea of renaming our global EA SPORTS football games.”

What??? FIFA, soccer titles and EA have forever been synonymous. Developed by its Vancouver team, EA has been releasing an annual version of the football video game and spin-off editions since 1993. It’s now one of the most successful video game franchises in history.

“We’re reviewing our naming rights agreement with FIFA, which is separate from all our other official partnerships and licenses across the football world,” says Cam Weber, EA Sports group general manager, in the blog post.

In the same announcement, EA that it has over 300 individual licenced partners, which involves over 17,000 athletes from over 700 teams globally, all with their associated fees. Add to that the FIFA branding, which is undoubtedly expensive.

The move comes after Konami, the Japanese video game company, rebranded its Pro Evolution Soccer series as ‘eFootball’ with the release of its latest entry.

It looks like Nintendo might have fixed Joy-Con drift after all

In an uncharacteristic, wide-ranging interview, Nintendo has confirmed the Switch OLED model’s Joy-Cons feature “improved wear resistance and durability.”

The company also says these improvements are included in the “Switch Lite, and the ones [Joy-Cons] sold individually.”

Likely to avoid more potential class-action lawsuits brought against the company due the well-known Joy-Con drift issue, Toru Yamashita, Nintendo’s deputy general manager of its technology development, doesn’t outright state current Joy-Cons won’t suffer from drift, but reading between the lines, that seems to be the case.

“We mentioned that the Joy-Con controller specifications hadn’t changed in the sense that we didn’t add new features such as new buttons, but the analog sticks in the Joy-Con controllers included with Nintendo Switch – OLED Model are the latest version with all the improvements. Needless to say, so are the analog sticks included in Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, separately sold Joy-Con controllers, and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller that are currently being shipped,” said Yamashita in the interview.

Though Nintendo has never launched an official repair program, Switch owners have been sending Joy-Cons to the Japanese gaming giant to get fixed since the handheld’s launch back in 2017.

In the interview, Yamashita goes on to say that when Nintendo previously confirmed it didn’t change anything about the OLED Switch’s Joy-Cons, it meant that the gamepads don’t include new features.

Yamashita says Nintendo plans to continue improving the Switch OLED model just like it did with the original Switch and emphasizes its rigorous quality control. At one point in the interview, Ko Shiota, Nintendo’s executive member of the board, senior executive officer general manager, technology development division (that’s a lot of titles), compares the Joy-Con’s issues to car tires wearing out.

“…for example car tires wear out as the car moves, as they are in constant friction with the ground to rotate. So with that same premise, we asked ourselves how we can improve durability, and not only that, but how can both operability and durability coexist? It’s something we are continuously tackling,” said Shiota.

Though it’s still unclear, there’s a possibility Shiota is inferring that while Nintendo has done as much as it can to improve the reliability of the Switch’s Joy-Cons, new versions of the controllers could still experience issues.

It remains unclear what the cause of Joy-Con drift is, with some reports citing problems with the gamepad’s joysticks and others mentioning debris getting inside the controllers. Cleaning Joy-Cons with pressurized air, rubbing alcohol and more have been mentioned as potential solutions to the issue.

For what it’s worth, I’ve yet to encounter Joy-Con drift with the Switch OLED model I have, though I also didn’t run into the problem with my Switch or Switch Lite either. We’ll likely need to wait for a teardown of the OLED model’s Joy-Cons before knowing for sure what Nintendo has changed inside the gamepads.

You can now order Starbucks for pick-up at Toronto Pearson through UberEats

Toronto Pearson International Airport and Uber Eats will allow travellers and airport workers to order food for pickup from more than 20 on-site cafés and restaurants.

Through the Uber Eats app on iOS and Android, you’ll be able to skip the line at Starbucks, A&W, Subway, Fionn MacCool’s, The Hearth, Twist, Caplansky’s Deli and more. To help make this easier, the Uber Eats app will also now detect whether you’re at Pearson and bring up a screen letting you know about which restaurants you can order from.

In addition to being more convenient, Pearson says this is intended to help reduce physical contact amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is an expansion of Pearson and Uber Eats’ existing partnership, which has allowed travellers to order food for delivery to their gate.

Ontario will permanently allow privately-owned cannabis shops to offer delivery, pickup options

The Ontario government says it will allow private cannabis shops to offer delivery and curbside pickup.

This comes as part of a bill introduced in the legislature that aims to reduce the rules surrounding private cannabis sellers in the province. Cannabis stores in Ontario have been allowed to offer delivery and pick up during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Previously, only the province’s Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) was able to offer delivery.

Government officials say that making these options permanent will allow cannabis stores to maintain physical distancing and other public health measures.

This proposed legislation also includes fast-tracking of applications for patio spaces and bettering the virtual government portals.

Ontario’s proof of vaccination app to be called ‘Verify Ontario’

The Government of Ontario’s COVID-19 proof of vaccination app will be called, fittingly enough, ‘Verify Ontario.’

Mike Crawley, CBC News‘ Queen’s Park reporter, tweeted on Wednesday night that a colleague had discovered the name via a web page.

However, the government has still not publicly commented on the name nearly one day later.

Set to launch on October 22nd, the Verify Ontario app will allow Ontarians to store a QR code containing proof of their vaccination. Businesses that require this, such as dine-in restaurants, movie theatres and convention centres, can then scan the QR code.

This system went into effect on September 22nd, with the province stating that it would take one month from then to get the official QR code app up and running.

For now, Ontarians can use the province’s official vaccination receipt tool to show to businesses. You can also use that same portal to book a vaccine appointment if you haven’t yet done so.

Xplornet now offering gigabit internet service at 6,500 Haldimand locations

Xplornet recently provided an update on its high-speed internet expansion project in Haldimand, Ontario.

In the press release, the carrier shared that its gigabit internet service is now available at 6,500 locations in the southern Ontario county.

Xplornet, which styles itself as “Canada’s largest rural-focused broadband provider, ” first shared details about its new “Metro Loop” fibre-to-the-home expansion project back in April 2021.

The project’s goal is to connect 19,000 households and businesses in Haldimand County to Xplornet’s high-speed — one gigabit per second — internet network over the next two years.

Over 600km of fibre optic cable is reportedly needed to connect the entire region and complete the project.

Just last month, Xplornet partnered with Ericson to launch what it claims is Canada’s first-ever rural 5G standalone network in New Brunswick.

Google’s Pixel Buds A-Series are on sale at Best Buy for $119

Google’s Pixel Buds A-Series, the entry-level version of the tech giant’s wireless earbuds, are now on sale for $119 — down from their regular price of $139 ($20 off).

While not a sizable discount, this is the first A-Series Buds price cut I’ve seen. The price drop seems to be across the board, and includes retailers like Best Buy, Staples, the Google Store and more.

While I found that the Pixel Buds A-Series doesn’t sound quite as good as the more expensive Pixel Buds (2020), they’re still a cost-effective option if you’re looking for a new pair of wireless earbuds.

Even better, they don’t suffer from the intermittent Bluetooth connection issues that their more expensive counterpart do; in fact, you can’t even purchase Pixel Buds (2020) from Google anymore.

For more on the A-Series Buds, check out my in-depth look at the budget wireless earbuds.

Apple has renewed its Foundation series for a second season on its Apple TV+ video streaming service.

While Apple doesn’t reveal specific viewership figures for its Apple TV+ content, the sci-fi series must be tracking well already, given that it only just premiered on September 24th.

Created by David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy) and Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Foundation is based on Isaac Asimov’s eponymous novel series and stars Jared Harris (Mad Men), Lee Pace (The Hobbit trilogy) and Lou Llobel (Voyagers).

The series follows Dr. Hari Seldon (Harris) as he and a group of followers try to preserve the future of civilization while a long line of emperor clones (Pace) attempt to stop them.
