Twitch blames data breach on error in a ‘server configuration change’

Twitch issued a couple of minor updates following the massive security breach on Wednesday that saw the source code, creator payouts and more leaked online.

In the first of two updates posted on the Twitch blog, the Amazon-owned streaming platform said an “error in a Twitch server configuration change” caused the breach:

“We have learned that some data was exposed to the internet due to an error in a Twitch server configuration change that was subsequently accessed by a malicious third party. Our teams are working with urgency to investigate the incident.”

It’s worth noting that Facebook blamed its recent outage on a similar configuration problem.

I feel I’d also be remiss not to point out that Twitch saying “some data was exposed” downplays the breach, which allegedly leaked the entirety of Twitch. To be fair, Twitch goes on to explain that it’s still trying to “understand the impact in detail.”

Further, the streaming platform says that it has “no indication that login credentials have been exposed.”

However, reporting on login credentials is mixed. Some publications, including MobileSyrup, reported that login credential don’t appear to be included in the over 125GB of data leaked online. 9to5Mac cites a developer going by ‘Sinoc‘ on Twitter who says that the data included encrypted passwords. While the encryption hopefully will keep the passwords safe, it may be best to change your Twitch password and enable two-factor authentication (2FA) just in case.

Twitch also wrote in its first blog update that the breach didn’t expose full credit card numbers because it doesn’t store full credit card numbers.

In the second update, Twitch says it reset all stream keys “out of an abundance of caution.” That means some people may need to go here to get a new stream key and add the new key to their broadcasting software to start streaming again. The change shouldn’t impact most users, but it depends on how your stream is set up.

You can read Twitch’s updates here.

Telus and Bell announce two new health tech projects

Two of Canada’s “Big Three” telecommunications companies have each announced a new initiative in their health technology and community outreach divisions.

First, Telus is working with REACH Niagara to create a mobile health clinic offering medical care to marginalized communities living in the southern Ontario region, such as people without housing and migrant agricultural workers in the Niagara Fruit Belt.

According to the press release, the clinic-on-wheels is equipped with “Telus Health’s electronic medical record (EMR) technology, TelusMobility services and Telus LTE Wi-Fi network technology.”

The mobile clinic is designed to provide at-risk and low-income folks living in Niagara with easy access to COVID-19 testing, harm reduction services, mental health care, reproductive health services, and other medical treatments.

The clinic is part of Telus’ Health for Good program, which funds and operates mobile clinics across the country through a $10 million investment from the telecom carrier.

You can find Telus Health for Good mobile clinics in Edmonton, Halifax, Mississauga-Peel, Montreal, Niagara, Ottawa, Surrey, Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria and Waterloo.

Meanwhile, Bell’s mental illness awareness program, Bell Let’s Talk, is partnering with the Strongest Families Institute (SFI) to launch a mobile app.

SFI offers a selection of family education programs to coach children and adults on how to manage anxiety, pain and stress.

The mobile app, available for iOS and Android devices, will let families remotely access the SFI’s programs and other “e-mental health services,” as per the press release.

The 2021 edition of Bell Let’s Talk Day raised $7.9 million in donations to various mental health foundations and funds.

Xbox and Adidas partner to release 20 year anniversary sneakers

To commemorate Xbox’s 20th anniversary, the company has announced a collaboration with Adidas to create a new range of Xbox-inspired sneakers.

The footwear has the Xbox logo and transparent green accents similar to those found on the special edition Xbox console released with Halo: Combat Evolved in 2001.

Further, in Xbox’s blog post, sales and marketing manager, Xbox consumer products, James Monosmith, said that this is just the beginning of Xbox’s partnership with Adidas and “over the next few months we’ll continue to mark our 20th anniversary by launching additional sneakers inspired by past and present Xbox console generations, including the first-ever sneaker available for purchase by our fans later this year.”

The collaboration is part of a broader initiative that embraces skateboarding culture, which was popular when Microsoft introduced the original Xbox system in the early 2000s.

In 2019, Microsoft partnered with Axe to release the Xbox body wash, and earlier this year, PlayStation collaborated with Nike and Los Angeles Clippers’ Power Forward Paul George to release the PS5-inspired sneakers.

It seems like branching out of gaming is boding well for the two console giants.

TCL 20 Pro and 20S are both on sale at Quebec carrier Vidéotron

Quebec-based carrier, Vidéotron is offering a pretty sweet deal for the TCL 20S and 20 Pro.

Starting at $8 per month with select 24-month plans, you can get the TCL 20S for as low as $200.

If you get the TLC 20S, you only have to pay $8 per month for 24 months, plus plans to start $30 (voice only) per month. Other plans are also available that offer data. The TCL 20S is $10.75 off per month.

If you buy the TCL 20 Pro, you’ll need to spend $20.50 for 24 months. To get this deal you still have to pay at least $50 per month for 10GB, but that in itself isn’t a bad plan, and if you spend an extra $15 you can get 20GB per month and qualify for Vidéotron’s additional 100GB per year. The 20 Pro is $12.75 off per month.

I reviewed the TCL 20 Pro earlier this year and found it a great-looking smartphone with an impressive display and camera.

Canon gets in on the VR game with new dual-fisheye lens

Canon aims to simplify how users capture virtual reality (VR) content with a dual-fisheye lens that attaches to its premier mirrorless camera, the Canon R5.

The lens captures two images or video streams on a single image sensor and can shoot in 8K. This means that when converted and played back correctly through a VR headset, the footage looks very sharp and realistic.

While this is infinitely easier than an entirely separate camera rig for shooting VR footage, it’s not the one-stop-shop machine that Canon promises. Users will still need the $5,000 EOS R5, the latest 1.5.0 software update, a Premiere Pro plugin, and an EOS VR Utility conversion app.

The lens itself also carries a premium price tag of $2,699 and will be available in late December.

While Canon’s dual-fisheye lens is pricey, so are other dedicated VR rigs. The lens also offers the versatility of being a great mirrorless camera on top of a VR camera, offering pretty good value.

While not many people will likely pick up this dual-fisheye yet, it’s smart for Canon to bet on the VR market with a dedicated lens as the space matures.

R. Kelly’s YouTube channels are gone for good

YouTube has removed R. Kelly’s official channels after the singer was convicted of sex trafficking charges last month.

After a trial in which prosecutors accused Kelly of using his celebrity status to attract women and young girls into his circle for sex for a quarter-century, a federal jury convicted him guilty of racketeering and eight counts of sex trafficking.

This has resulted in YouTube deleting two channels associated with him, ‘RKellyTV’ and ‘RKellyVevo.’ Further, Reuters reports that Kelly will be unable to create or own any other YouTube channels in the future.

Kelly faces a required minimum sentence of ten years and a maximum of life in prison, which will be decided upon during his May 4th, 2022 sentencing.

It’s worth noting that the sex offender’s music library will remain available on YouTube Music, and his videos added by other YouTube users will remain accessible.

The ‘MuteRKelly’ movement, which calls for the singer’s songs to be removed from streaming services, has urged other major platforms to follow YouTube’s lead.
