Bird Three e-scooter is now being piloted at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa

Bird Canada announced the launch of an e-scooter pilot at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa to show off the Bird Three e-scooter model. Ottawa is the first city in Canada that will get the chance to preview the new features, which will promote proper parking, curb sidewalk riding, and more.

This technology will be available at Lansdowne until the end of the 2021 “scooting season,” according to the press release.

The new models will sport on-vehicle sensors that prevent sidewalk riding in real-time. The scooter will tell riders via an audible and visual “No-Ride Zone” warning sent to their mobile devices. It will also show up on the vehicle when the user mounts a sidewalk.

Additionally, the e-scooter will slow down and come to a stop, so the rider can walk off the e-scooter.

Another update is an AI-Verified parking compliance feature. The AI will now make sure you’re properly parked.

These new e-scooters will also make an audible noise at set intervals to alert pedestrians of approaching e-scooters.

Another new feature with the new model is the ‘Beginner Mode,’ which will slow acceleration, limit top speed and teach users how to ride an e-scooter. There’s also a gentle acceleration feature that will let new riders gradually make their way up to top speed.

Meanwhile, a safety feature that will make riders pass a test to unlock the e-scooter to avoid drunk riding after 10pm.

You can also watch a video of the scooter here.

Where to stream Daniel Craig’s James Bond movies in Canada before No Time To Die

After 16 years, Daniel Craig’s record-long tenure as James Bond is coming to an end.

No Time To Die, the swan song for Craig’s iteration of the iconic British superspy, is finally set to exclusively open in theatres on October 8th after multiple COVID-19 related delays.

Co-written and directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, No Time To Die follows Bond as he comes out of retirement to stop a terrorist threat. As Craig’s final Bond performance, No Time To Die is also expected to tie up threads from his four previous films: Casino Royale (2005), Quantum of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015).

Given that, you might be wanting to rewatch some (or all) of these films, especially since it’s been six years since the last one. With that in mind, read on for more info on where you can stream Craig’s previous four Bond flicks in Canada before No Time To Die.

As it so happens, Bell signed a deal with MGM last year to secure the exclusive Canadian streaming rights to the James Bond franchise. This means that all of the Bond films — not only Craig’s, but those starring the likes of the late Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan — are all available on Bell’s Crave service. Specifically, they’re streaming under Crave’s HBO + Movies tier, which costs $19.98 CAD/month.

Follow these links for Casino RoyaleQuantum of SolaceSkyfall and Spectre on Crave. Additionally, there’s a 45-minute special called Being James Bond: The Daniel Craig Story in which Craig, the Bond series producers and other creatives reflect on the English actor’s time as 007. The Daniel Craig Story is available for free on the Apple TV app until October 7th or on Crave under its base $9.99/month tier.

Finally, the official theme song for the movie, Billie Eilish’s eponymous “No Time To Die,” is now streaming on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Music.

Are you excited for No Time to Die? Do you prefer Casino Royale or Skyfall? Who do you want to see next as Bond? Let us know in the comments.

Apple now considers the original Apple Watch a ‘Vintage Product’

The 38mm and 42mm first-generation Apple Watch models have been added to Apple’s list of vintage and obsolete products.

The first version of Apple’s smartwatch launched more than six years ago back in 2015. The ‘Series 1’ was followed by the ‘Series 2’ in 2016, and since then, the tech giant has released a new version of the wearable every year.

Being labelled as vintage means that the wearable is no longer eligible for repairs by Apple or from authorized service providers. Apple’s vintage list typically includes products the tech giant stopped selling more than five years ago and less than seven years ago.

While the Series 1 looks very similar to the Series 7, Apple’s entire strategy surrounding the Apple Watch has shifted considerably over the last few years. The OG Apple Watch was far more focused on being an extension of what the iPhone is capable of, while more recent versions of the wearable are more independent, feature several health-focused sensors and include a wide variety of fitness features.

The Apple Watch Series 7 is expected to release at some point in October, though strangely, the wearable doesn’t yet have a specific release date, backing up rumours that it suffered a manufacturing delay.

YouTube will now block all anti-vax content

YouTube is updating its medical misinformation policies to include a ban on all anti-vax content.

In a blog post, the company notes that this marks an expansion of existing policies that blocked COVID-19 related vaccine videos based on a number of criteria. Now, videos about any type of vaccine, be it the flu or MMR shots, will be prohibited.

“We’ve steadily seen false claims about the coronavirus vaccines spill over into misinformation about vaccines in general, and we’re now at a point where it’s more important than ever to expand the work we started with COVID-19 to other vaccines,” writes YouTube in the blog.

“Specifically, content that falsely alleges that approved vaccines are dangerous and cause chronic health effects, claims that vaccines do not reduce transmission or contraction of disease, or contains misinformation on the substances contained in vaccines will be removed.”

Examples of this include content falsely claiming that approved vaccines cause autism, cancer or infertility, or contain location tracking devices. The company says it consulted with medical experts when developing the new policies.

Google says Bing’s top search result is Google

Google is fighting an antitrust fine from the European Union using Microsoft’s Bing.

Specifically, it’s using Bing’s top search term, which according to Google, is Google.

For a bit of background, the EU slapped Google with a massive €4.34 billion (roughly $6.37 billion CAD) antitrust fine in 2018 for requiring Android phone manufacturers to bundle Google apps with the Play Store. Over the last week, Google started the appeal process to fight the fine.

Of particular note was evidence submitted by Alfonso Lamadrid, a lawyer for Google’s parent company, Alphabet. The evidence cited Bing’s most popular search term — allegedly Google — as proof that customers choose Google Search over competitors.

“People use Google because they choose to, not because they are forced to. Google’s market share in general search is consistent with consumer surveys showing that 95% of users prefer Google to rival search engines,” Lamadrid said.

According to Bloomberg, Google argues that being Bing’s top search result proves people actively choose to use Google. It follows, then, that Google’s bundling of its services with the Play Store on Android phones isn’t the driving factor behind people using its services — people actually prefer to use those services.

Although it may take more than being Bing’s top search result to prove that point, it’s funny to see Google argue that in court.

It’s also worth noting that there’s nothing stopping people from choosing to use different services on their Android smartphone. Granted, being the default can significantly influence people’s choice to use or not use a given app or service. The real question is whether Google leverages its position as the default service to block other services from competing with it.

How to add a proof of vaccination shortcut to you Android home screen

Earlier this month, MobileSyrup published a guide on creating a shortcut on an iPhone to quickly access your vaccination record for when people needed to verify their vaccination status.

While helpful for iPhone users, the guide didn’t have anything for Android users — this new guide should help in that regard. That said, if you’ve landed on this page and you own an iPhone, you should click here to head to the iPhone guide.

Okay, now that it’s just us cool Android users, here’s how you can create an easy shortcut to access your vaccination document on your phone. To be clear, this isn’t a replacement for a vaccination certificate app or similar technology — it’s just a convenient way to carry a digital copy of your vaccination receipt for if and when you need to verify your vaccination status.

Download your vaccination receipt

Before anything else, you’ll need to get a digital copy of your vaccination status. For Ontario residents, you can do that using this website from the Ontario government. You can click or tap here to access the website, then select ‘Get your vaccine receipt.’ If you don’t live in Ontario, you can follow the same steps but you’ll need to get your proof of vaccination from your province’s/territory’s/country’s website instead.

Scroll to ‘To download your proof of vaccination or book an appointment’ and check that you’ve read the terms of use, then press ‘Continue.’

On the next page, you’ll need to enter some personal information, including health card number, postal code and date of birth. Next, the site will let you access a PDF copy of your proof of vaccination. You’ll want to download that to your computer or phone. Those doing this on their computer will then need to move the PDF to their phone (if you use a service like Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive, you won’t need to upload the file from your phone later).

Choosing an app to use

iPhone owners can use a helpful app called ‘Shortcuts‘ to create an app icon that links directly to a digital copy of their vaccination status. While Shortcuts isn’t available for Android (it’s an Apple app, after all), there are several similar solutions. Perhaps the easiest, if not necessarily the best, is using a file management or cloud storage app to quickly access the proof of vaccination PDF via a home screen shortcut generated by a cloud storage or file management app.

Realistically, this same strategy should work with any app that lets you create home screen shortcuts to specific files — Google Files, unfortunately, does not let you do that as far as I can tell, which is why I chose to use a cloud storage app instead.

I tested this on Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox and it works on all three platforms. I recommend using whichever one you already use as that’s easiest. However, I found Google Drive worked a little better than the other two because it let you link directly to the PDF file.

More tech savvy people could probably use an app like Tasker to create a shortcut to the PDF. However, Tasker costs $4.59 in Canada and can be rather complex (I found myself struggling to figure it out, and I’m usually pretty good with this stuff). I also tried IFTTT but couldn’t find a way to make it do what I wanted.

Ultimately, the approach I detail below is a think a good balance of accessible and convenient. However, if you’ve got other solutions, we welcome you sharing them in the comments below. Finally, it’s worth noting that some online services offer tools to turn your proof of vaccination PDF into a scannable QR code. While certainly helpful, not all businesses or locations are equipped to scan those codes and verify them — you may need to have your proof of vaccination (digitally or physically) ready to go too. The steps below should help you get that set up.

Creating your home screen shortcut

Start by uploading your vaccination PDF to the cloud service of your choice. On Google Drive, that’s all you need to do. With OneDrive and Dropbox, I found you couldn’t create a shortcut to a specific file, so I recommend putting the PDF into a folder instead. And, for bonus efficiency, tap the three-dot menu button next to the PDF file and set it to be available offline — the app you’re using will download the file and store it locally for you.

Then, go to the home screen on your Android phone and do the following (note that some steps may differ slightly depending on the phone you have, Android version and other software):

1. Press-and-hold on an empty home screen space and select ‘Widgets’ from the menu.

2. Find the section for your app of choice (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, etc.).

3. Press-and-hold on the ‘shortcut’ widget, then drag it to the home screen.

4. Follow the steps to select a file or folder (Note that Google Drive will ask which account you want to use if you have multiple accounts).

5. Select the vaccination PDF file (Drive) or the folder you put the file in (OneDrive, Dropbox).

Once that’s done, you should have a shortcut on your home screen. When you tap it, it will open either the PDF file or the folder you keep the file in, letting you quickly access it from your home screen.

As in previous years, the event will be held at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater and streamed worldwide in 4K on a variety of platforms. A specific time for this year’s show wasn’t revealed, but it’s expected to be sometime in the evening as with previous ceremonies.

Keighley did confirm, however, that Hollywood composer Lorne Balfe (Mission: Impossible) will return to conduct this year’s live orchestra. “Much more to share in [the] weeks ahead,” Keighley concluded.

Every year, the show offers a mix of awards being given to the top games and developers, as well as world premiere game reveals.

Public parties are now available with 20 Stadia titles

Stadia gamers trying to find teammates are in luck.

Google has quietly added support for public parties in Stadia, allowing you to find other gamers playing the same titles as you to team up with.

Public parties are now available to all Stadia users via the new ‘Parties’ menu under the ‘Friends’ panel — and yes, you can still invite your friends to a private party. The new menu includes an option to create a public party or join an existing one.

When creating a new public party, you’ll need to first select a supported game, write a brief party description and set how many players can join the party (10 max).

While not all Stadia titles feature public party support yet, roughly 20 games do. Google says the feature will come to more games soon.

You can create a public party if you’re playing any of the following games:

  • Ark: Survival Evolved
  • Crayta
  • Dead by Daylight
  • Destiny 2
  • Far Cry 5
  • Fifa 21
  • Fifa 22
  • Human: Fall Flat
  • Humankind
  • Madden NFL 22
  • Marvel’s Avengers
  • NBA 2K21
  • PUBG: Battlegrounds
  • Red Dead Redemption 2
  • The Crew 2
  • The Division 2
  • The Elder Scrolls Online
  • Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • Watch Dogs: Legion

Additionally, you can set up public parties on Stadia.com too. Simply follow the steps below:

  • Sign in to your account on Stadia.com and press the Stadia button on your controller (Shift+Tab if you’re on PC)
  • Select Parties > Start a party > Public party.
  • Select a tile you want to play, write a party description, select the number of additional players you want in your party (max 10), and click on Start Party.

It’s worth noting that once you’ve found the pre-determined number of players, the party will automatically become private. The new feature is also available to those that don’t subscribe to Stadia Pro.
