Some iPhone 13 users are reporting touchscreen issues

Several iPhone 13 users report experiencing intermittent touch issues with the new smartphone, causing screen swipes and presses to be delayed or not recognized altogether.

Posts on Twitter, Reddit, MacRumors’ forums and Apple’s official support forum include several posts from users experiencing touchscreen-related issues with the iPhone 13. The problem seems to affect all devices in the iPhone 13 lineup, including the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro max.

For what it’s worth, I’ve been consistently using the iPhone 13 Pro Max for the last few weeks and haven’t encountered this particular issue — at least not yet.

Thankfully, given the issue also seems to be affecting older iPhone models, it’s likely not tied to a hardware problem and instead could be related to iOS 15.

Though iOS 15 is relatively stable, the update has featured a few issues, including a bug related to ‘Unlock with Apple Watch’ not working with the iPhone 13, widget issues and security vulnerabilities.

Given Apple’s track record for rapidly fixing bugs, it’s likely that this touchscreen issue will be fixed relatively quickly.

PlayStation confirms acquisition of Demon’s Souls remake developer Bluepoint

PlayStation has confirmed that it has acquired the Austin, Texas-based studio Bluepoint Games.

Notably, the Japanese gaming giant leaked this news last year in a since-deleted tweet from its official PlayStation Japan Twitter account and is only now formally talking about it.

Specific terms of the acquisition, such as financial details, were not disclosed. However, Bluepoint is a natural fit for the PlayStation Studios family, given their long-running partnership. In fact, nearly every game that Bluepoint has made has been exclusive to PlayStation platforms, including 2009’s God of War Collection, 2011’s The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, 2015’s The Nathan Drake Collection, 2018’s Shadow of the Colossus remake and, most recently, last year’s Demon’s Souls remake.

The throughline between all of these games is that Bluepoint was either remastering or remaking existing titles. However, Bluepoint teased in an interview with IGN that its next game would be an “original” title. No further details were revealed. That said, it’s important to note that an original game simply means it won’t be a remaster or remake; it doesn’t rule out Bluepoint working on a new game based on an existing property.

PlayStation has been on a bit of a buying spree as of late. Over the past year, the company has purchased Helsinki, Finland-based Housemarque (Returnal), Liverpool, England-based Firesprite (The Playroom) and Utrecht, Netherlands-based technical support studio Nixxes.

CRTC logged 24,627 likely cases of port and SIM swap fraud in 10 months

In just ten months, Canada’s telecom regulator documented 24,627 cases of potential phone number fraud, according to an investigative report from The Globe and Mail.

The report states that 21,589 of those cases — nearly 88 percent — were unauthorized number ports, with the other 3,038 identified as SIM swaps.

The attacks took place between August 2019 and May 2020.

Both the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and Canada’s telecom carriers have long refused to release their data on phone number fraud.

In a Twitter threadGlobe and Mail telecom reporter Alexandra Posadzki described how they obtained the classified information.

Posadzki said they began looking into phone number fraud after “falling victim to a SIM swap” in 2018.

Interestingly, the Access to Information and Privacy request they sent to the CRTC unhelpfully yielded “four completely redacted pages.”

In order to receive the actual, unredacted data they requested, the reporter registered a formal complaint with the Office of the Information Commissioner.

SIM swapping — also known as port-out scams or simjacking — is an ongoing problem in Canada.

The Ontario Provincial Police and West Vancouver police both issued public warnings about this new form of digital scam in 2019.

More recently, in March 2021, Public Mobile temporarily shut down its online SIM swap self-service option for customers, in an effort to prevent instances of SIM swapping fraud.

To protect yourself against SIM swapping, one of the first steps is knowing how to recognize it — the most common way being that your phone will suddenly and inexplicably lose service.

To learn more, check out our consumer resource guide on SIM swapping.

BlueStacks X emulator brings Android games to the cloud

Notable Android app emulator BlueStacks X has stepped into the world of game streaming with a new service that lets users play several Android games on the web.

So far, there are ten games available to stream, and in my brief test playing Merge Dragons!, the platform seems responsive enough to provide an adequate gameplay experience.

BlueStacks X also says it’s running on Amazon Web Service Graviton Servers, which Amazon rates highly on the AWS website. If you don’t feel like cloud streaming, you can use the regular BlueStacks X emulator to play one of the 200 other games the company offers.

In the future, the platform hopes to move all of these titles over to cloud streaming. Pre-roll ads currently support the service, but the company is considering offering a subscription service, reports The Verge.

If BlueStacks X can keep its latency reasonable, this could be a convenient way to play mobile titles without an Android smartphone. That said, like with other cloud gaming services, if you have an Android device that can play games locally, you’re likely better off taking that route.

Unraveling the saga of the 4K Switch Nintendo says doesn’t exist

When Nintendo first revealed the Switch OLED model a few months ago, it was difficult not to be disappointed that it wasn’t the more significant rumoured refresh many people expected.

Since then, rumours surrounding a potential 4K Switch died down — at least until now. On Wednesday, Bloomberg reported that several developers currently have Switch 4K development kits and are actively working on games with them.

The publication’s report says that 11 developers are working with the 4K Switch development kit, including both big and small studios. As expected, Nintendo quickly denied this claim, stating that it has “no plans for any new model other than Nintendo Switch — OLED Model..”

Bloomberg says that Nintendo planned to release a 4K Switch this October but was forced to shift its plans due to “component shortages” related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, the Japanese gaming giant already sent out 4K development kits to developers prior to revealing the Switch OLED model.

Developers working on 4K titles state that they expect to release their games at some point in 2022, indicating that we likely won’t see the release of a 4K Switch until that time frame “at the earliest.”

Adding more fuel to the churning rumour mill, mobile game developer Zynga denied that it currently has a 4K development kit from Nintendo. Bloomberg‘s report states that the FarmVille developer is one of the studios that currently has a 4K Switch development kit. Zynga is working on Star Wars: Hunters for the Nintendo Switch.

Earlier rumours indicated that Nintendo plans to utilize Nvidia’s DLSS technology to output 4K visuals when the console is docked.

Though it would make sense to assume Bloomberg‘s reporting is wrong, it’s likely not the case. If a rumour appears this often, there’s usually at least some level of truth to it.

This also isn’t the first time we’ve seen Nintendo deny a console’s existence, only to reveal it a few months later. Further, it’s not surprising to see a developer reportedly working on a 4K Switch title denying it has a development kit given how secretive the gaming industry typically is.

Nintendo’s Switch OLED model will release on October 8th for $449 CAD.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max supports up to 27W charging, with the right brick

The iPhone 13 Pro Max can reportedly charge faster than Apple’s other iPhone 13 models.

According to tests done by YouTube channel ChargerLAB and Twitter user ‘DuanRui‘ (@duanrui1205), the iPhone 13 Pro Max can handle up to 27 watt charging when using a compatible charging brick. The iPhone 13 Pro Max can go from zero to full in under 90 minutes when charging at that speed.

9to5Mac reports that the iPhone 12 capped out at around 22W charging speed. In other words, the iPhone 13 Pro Max offers a roughly 5W boost over the previous generation of iPhones. Unfortunately, that bonus is limited to the 13 Pro Max — DuanRui said the iPhone 13 Pro could only charge at 20W.

Of course, none of this matters if you still use the awful 5W brick Apple included with every iPhone up until it stopped putting chargers in the box with the iPhone 11 (the iPhone 11 Pro did get a fast charger in the box, but it’s an 18W brick). It also doesn’t matter if you use wireless charging or Apple’s fancy MagSafe for charging — both cap at 15W.

To really take advantage of the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s 27W charging, you’ll need a cable and a charging brick capable of putting out at least 27W of power. Apple does sell a 30W power brick on its website for $59, but before you go dropping the money, it may be worth checking if you have a 30W+ brick already.

You might already have a charging brick that works with the iPhone 13 Pro Max

The Verge notes that Apple includes a 30W charger with the new MacBook Air and a 61W charger with MacBook Pros, both of which can provide the 27W charging needed for the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Alternatively, you can check your power bricks’ charging capabilities by reading the regulatory text printed on them. It should break down the output the brick can deliver, but if you don’t see it in watts, you can multiply the volts and amps to get the wattage. For example, the Pixel charging brick I had by my desk can output at 5V, 3A (15W) or 9V, 2A (18W), and thus would not charge the iPhone 13 Pro Max at full speed.

And of course, nothing can ever be that simple, so The Verge warns that some 30W chargers won’t charge the iPhone 13 Pro Max at 27W because the iPhone looks for 9V at 3A.

It’s a lot of extra complexity that Apple could have avoided if it opted for a better system than just removing the charger from the box. For example, if Apple provided a voucher with new iPhones that let people who actually needed a charger get one (and, specifically, the right one to charge their phone quickly), it could avoid customers having to watch YouTube videos and read tiny regulatory text on the bottom of a charger brick to figure out if they’ll get fast charging with the fancy new iPhone.
