Electronics manufacturers halt production amid China’s mandated power shutdowns

The ongoing chip shortages plaguing smartphones, computers, game consoles and cars will likely get worse as China plans to shut off power to reduce emissions.

According to Tom’s Hardware, the country plans to temporarily shut off power in several major manufacturing hubs, and do so on a scheduled basis going forward. The mandated power shutdowns are reportedly an effort to reduce emissions as China shifts away from coal-powered electricity. The power shutdowns will likely impact electronics companies like Apple, Intel, Nvidia, Qualcomm and more.

As of 2019, as much as 65 percent of the electricity in China came from coal. Although China has promised the UN that it would not build any more new coal-fueled power plants and would increase reliance on other energy sources, the transition will take time. With coal prices surging, China has ordered the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Guangdong to cut total energy consumption. That’s why local governments plan to cut electricity supply to industrial customers and malls for several days each month.

The cuts will impact some companies more than others. For example, Intel, Nvidia and Qualcomm have production facilities in China that have received orders to stop production for several days in late September. Eson Precision Engineering, a mechanical parts supplier for Apple and Tesla, received orders to halt production from September 26th to 30th.

However, Reuters notes that the restrictions won’t apply to manufacturers with continuous production cycles. That includes TSMC and UMC — TSMC makes chips for Apple, AMD, Nvidia and several other companies.

Apple’s leading manufacturing partner, Foxconn, also shut down several facilities on Monday, according to Nikkei. Pegatron, another iPhone assembler, also had to shut down but has continued operations using diesel generators. Other manufacturing facilities are considering night shifts to make up for the lost time from power cuts.

Ultimately, it remains to be seen what impact, if any, the mandated power outages have on emissions. As Tom’s Hardware points out, most manufacturers will find ways around the restrictions, such as implementing night shifts, using generators or boosting production at other facilities not impacted by the limits. In other words, companies will shift power consumption to different times if they can, which could mean the mandated outages won’t have a significant impact on emissions.

Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy to hit Disney+ Canada on September 29

Disney has confirmed that the 20th Century Studios comedy Free Guy will premiere on Disney+ Canada on September 29th.

This is just over a month-and-a-half after the film’s August 13th theatrical release. It had been unclear when Free Guy would come to streaming, as it was revealed last month that certain contractual agreements were made with cinemas when the film was in development at Fox prior to its acquisition by Disney.

Free Guy will release on Disney+ Canada under the service’s ‘Star’ banner.

Directed by Montreal-born Shawn Levy (Stranger Things), Free Guy follows a background player (Vancouver’s own Ryan Reynolds) in a video game as he decides to become the hero of his own story and saves his virtual world from deletion.

Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Lil Rel Howery (Get Out), Joe Keery (Stranger Things), Utkarsh Ambudkar (Brockmire) and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) also appear in the film.

Rare Mew Oreo boxes are selling for thousands on eBay

A $15,000 box of Oreos is currently available on eBay.

Yes, that number is correct — $15,000 USD (roughly $19,000 CAD) for a package of Oreos. This Oreo frenzy is tied to the limited-edition Pokémon-themed Oreos that released earlier this month.

The Pokémon X Oreo collaboration allows you to collect all 16 different Pokémon Oreos, including Bulbasaur, Charmander, Cyndaquil, Dratini, Grookey, Jigglypuff, Lapras, Mew, Pancham, Pikachu, Piplup, Rowlett, Sableye, Sandshrew, Snivy and Squirtle.

As expected, mythical Pokémon Mew is the rarest of the bunch. A box of Mew Oreos is currently selling for various prices on eBay, including $500 USD (roughly $631.43 CAD) and another for $25,000 (about $31,500 CAD). Like with most rare items, the price varies between sellers, but either way, this is an expensive price for a single box of Oreos.

A person is even selling single Pokémon X Oreo cookies for $250 each. If you happen to come across a box of Oreo with Mew on it, you should definitely keep it regardless of how tempted you might be to eat it.

Video quality on Twitter is getting a crisp update

Videos in your Twitter feed should now look a lot less crunchy, according to a recent tweet from the microblogging platform’s support account.

The tweet claims that videos uploaded to Twitter “will appear less pixelated,” thanks to a new update aimed at improving video quality.

According to reporting by The Verge, the improvement in question involved axing a “pre-processing step” that “split videos into smaller chunks” in the upload process.

Apparently, this step sometimes reduced the quality of the final posted video.

This announcement is the latest in a slew of new features and updates from Twitter this month.

In September 2021 alone, the social media platform has introduced the following changes so far:

September 1st: Twitter debuts ‘Super Follows’, a paid subscription service for users who want to monetize their tweets via a paywall
September 1st: Twitter opens beta-testing for auto-block setting called ‘Safety Mode’
September 2nd: Twitter teases an in-development privacy setting that lets you hide old tweets
September 7th: Twitter starts testing full-screen ‘edge-to-edge’ display on iOS
September 8th: Twitter lets users cull their Followers list with new ‘Remove this follower’ button
September 8th: Twitter launches out moderated invite-only groups called ‘Communities’
September 9th: Twitter rolls out out emoji reactions for Turkish users only
September 10th: Twitter tests bot-identifying labels
September 23rd: Twitter introduces an upcoming trigger warning feature called ‘Heads Up’
September 23rd: Twitter expands its ‘Tips’ payment options to include Bitcoin, teases forthcoming NFT authentication

Nokia is looking to launch a tablet on October 6

It looks like HMD Global’s Nokia is teasing a new tablet.

Nokia phones are pretty close to stock Android nowadays and don’t offer anything all that top-of-the-line. So it’s potential we’ll see something like that with the tablet.

Based on rumours, the tablet will be called the Nokia T20 and sport a 10.36-inch display, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and a Unisoc chipset. Additionally, the tablet will reportedly sport Android 11 with 4G and Wi-Fi only.

The tablet will launch on October 6th, potentially alongside several other devices.
