Surface Duo 2 will get three years of OS, security updates

Microsoft will offer three years of Android and security updates for the Surface Duo 2.

A company representative confirmed the update promise to Android Authority following the unveiling of its newest Surface smartphone.

“We are committed to providing three years of OS and security updates,” the representative said.

It should come as good news to anyway planning to pick up a Surface Duo 2, although it’s disappointing Microsoft isn’t planning to offer longer support for such an expensive device. Three years is starting to become the minimum expectation as other smartphone makers like Samsung push to four years of security updates and Apple goes much further (the company’s iOS 15 upgrade supports 2015’s iPhone 6S and 6S Plus).

It’s also worth noting that Microsoft’s update promise matches the one it made about the original Surface Duo. Unfortunately, update speed is something the company will need to work on — it only just announced the Duo would get Android 11 by the end of 2021. Android 12 is expected to launch in October.

Ultimately, my concern is that this indicates software may continue to be an issue for the Duo 2. It was undoubtedly a problem for the Duo. Microsoft seems to have fixed many of the Duo’s hardware problems with the Duo 2 (at least, they have on paper), but if it can’t get software in order, the Duo 2 may be a really tough sell at $1,899.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra renders show weird P-shape camera setup and S Pen

Backing up recent rumours indicating that Samsung’s S series will look more like the now-dead Note line, official-looking renders of the upcoming Galaxy S22 Ultra reveal a rectangular shape and an S Pen.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will reportedly sport a slightly 6.8-inch curved display with a high refresh rate. The dimensions OnLeaks provided measure in at roughly 163.2 x 77.9 x 8.9mm with a thickness of 10.5mm if you include the camera bump.

It also seems that the device features a P-shape camera module with a quad-camera setup and a variety of sensors. One of the lenses is evidently a square-shaped periscope lens, which means the phone will likely include 10x zoom.

It also looks the S22 Ultra will include an S Pen that slides into a slot in the smartphone, similar to previous Note devices. Though Galaxy S21 Ultra works with the S Pen, it’s sold separately and doesn’t include a built-in storage space for the stylus.

Recently information about the S22 series featuring an Olympus-branded camera was debunked, and further, the Ultra variant is rumoured to launch with a 200-megapixel camera. Moreover, rumours indicate the smartphone will lack an Under Display Camera.

The S22 Ultra will likely launch sometime in January or February 2022.

iPhone 13 mini charges slowest in lineup over MagSafe

Apple’s iPhone 13 mini charges at 12-watts with MagSafe-certified wireless chargers instead of 15-watts like the rest of the iPhone 13 lineup, according to a new Apple Support document.

While many users were hoping the 5.4-inch tiny smartphone would get a charging speed upgrade this year, the lower charging speeds come as no surprise since the iPhone 12 mini suffered the same fate.

The iPhone 13 mini, of course, has the smallest battery out of the entire iPhone 13 lineup, so it likely won’t take a long time to charge anyways. It’s also worth noting that since the mini is a smaller device, it also likely heats up faster, which could be what Apple is hoping to offset by the slower charging speed.

If you are looking to fast charge your iPhone 13 mini, you can get maximum charging speeds of up to 22-watts by using a charging brick with at least 20-watts of output.

Huawei’s Meng Wanzhou pleads not guilty, could soon leave house arrest

Huawei’s chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou is pleading not guilty to multiple fraud charges levied against her by the United States government.

CBC News reported that multi-national Chinese tech company’s CFO has reached a “deferred prosecution agreement” with the U.S. — an arrangement in which a defendant is granted amnesty so long as they fulfill certain requirements.

In December 2018, Meng was detained by police at Vancouver International Airport after the U.S. government issued a warrant for her arrest over multiple fraud offences, including wire and bank fraud.

According to the CBC, the agreement reached today means Meng will likely soon be able to leave house arrest, where she’s been stuck — albeit in a spacious $5.6-million six-bedroom Vancouver home — since 2018, due to the U.S.’s extradition request.

The case against Meng has dragged out for years, with Meng’s lawyers arguing in 2020 that her arrest was unlawful, and the judge denying her legal team’s attempts to submit new evidence in 2021.

A document from Public Safety Canada that resurfaced in June 2021, thanks to an access to information request, added more fuel to the fire.

The government report claimed that cyberattacks carried out on Huawei devices in Canada had increased following Meng’s arrest.

Transformable Eddie Brock/Venom outfit now available in Fortnite

With the addition of a new Carnage outfit in Fortnite’s Chapter 2 Season 8 Battle Pass, a Symbiote Mythic Weapon making its way to the island and the upcoming Venom: Let There Be Carnage movie, the question wasn’t if Epic Games will release an Eddie Brock skin — it was when it would release an Eddie Brock skin.

You can pick up the Venom Bundle from the in-game item shop for 2,800 V-Bucks ($26.99) which includes the Eddie Brock outfit, (old) Venom outfit, a ‘Tendrils of Venom’ back bling, ‘Symbiote Scythe’ pickaxe, (old) ‘Tendril Tote’  back bling, (old) ‘Symbiote Slasher’ pickaxe and three emotes.

A Symbiote Trail Contrail and Symbiotic Sail Glider are also available separately for 400 and 800 V-Bucks, respectively. Further, Eddie can transform into Venom and back with the ‘Venom Unleashed’ emote (included with outfit purchase) any time in-game (see Tweet above for reference).

While staying on-topic of Fortnite, Apple says it won’t allow the game back on the App Store yet, and Epic CEO Tim Sweeney isn’t happy about it.

Razer launches new accessories in several colourways for console gamers

Razer has announced several new accessories and colourways to expand its console hardware offerings, including new headphones, controllers and charging stands.

Leading the list is the all-new Razer Kaira X wired headset for Xbox and Playstation consoles. Priced at $75.99 for both iterations, the headphones feature a 50mm TriForce driver in each ear cup and a boom-mounted Razer HyperClear Cardioid microphone that Razer says will pick up the user voice rather than environmental ambient sound.

Further, the Kaira X uses a standard headphone AUX connection, meaning they will operate with any device that has a 3.5mm port. However, Bluetooth capability or wireless via a dongle would have been appreciated.

The Razer Kaira X is available in two versions, PlayStation and Xbox. The Xbox variant comes in Black, White, Shock Blue, Pulse Red and Electric Volt colourways, whereas the PlayStation variant comes in a single white colour with black earcups and a blue accent, matching the console’s DualSense controllers.

You can order the Razer Kaira X for Xbox and Playstation here for $75.99.

Razer also released its new magnetic Universal Quick Charging Stand for Xbox controllers, which works with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Xbox Elite Series 1 controllers. Available in Carbon Black, Shock Blue, Robot White, Pulse Red, Electric Volt and Aqua Shift colour variants, the stand, according to Razer, can fully charge your controller in under three hours with added overcharge protection, in case you leave it docked overnight.

The Universal Quick Charging Stand for Xbox controllers is available to order now for $50.99.

Lastly, Razer also introduced the new Kaira, Kaira Pro headsets and the Wolverine V2 controller, all in White, exclusively for the Xbox Series X|S.

While the Kaira Pro uses Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth 5.0 to deliver audio to your ears, the Kaira uses Xbox Wireless exclusively. Both the headsets have the same TriForce Titanium 50mm drivers and a cardioid microphone.

On the other hand, the Wolverine V2 maintains the standard Xbox controller layout with the addition of two customizable bumpers.

The Razer Kaira for Xbox, Razer Kaira Pro for Xbox and the Razer Wolverine V2 are available for $139.99, $199.99 and $139.99, respectively.

Juno-winning musician breaks up with guy who played Wario on SNL

After three years of dating and multiple public spats on Twitter, Elon Musk and Grimes are splitting.

The news — which we at MobileSyrup have decided just barely counts as a Canadian tech story — broke via a tweet from Page Six, the New York Post‘s tabloid gossip section.

Musk and Grimes have a son together, who they will reportedly continue to co-parent.

Grimes is the stage name of Claire Boucher, a Vancouver-born dream/synth pop musician whose latest studio release, Miss Anthropocene, made it onto Billboard, Exclaim!, Pitchfork, Spin, Stereogum, and Time Magazine‘s lists for the Top Albums of 2020.

Musk is CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, rich beyond comprehension, and regularly behaves in absurd ways that warrant absurd headlines, such as “Elon Musk doesn’t like App Store fees and reportedly wanted to be CEO of Apple” and “Elon Musk is sending a Canadian-made Dogecoin satellite to the moon.”

His appearance on Saturday Night Live last May — which featured Musk suited up as beloved Nintendo bad-boy Wario with Grimes making a special appearance as Princess Peach — was so poorly received that it crashed Dogecoin, a “joke” cryptocurrency that Musk loves to promote

Bell to increase data overage rates by $3, long-distance rates by $0.10

Bell is reportedly increasing data overage rates and long-distance calling rates for its mobile wireless services starting November 2021.

According to a screenshot posted on Twitter by TekSavvy vice-president of insight and engagement — and Bell competitor, it should be noted — Peter Nowak, data overage rates for some Bell Mobility customers are jumping by $3, from $10 per 100MB (for up to 800MB) to $13 per 100MB .

After 800MB, the data overage rate appears to remain unchanged at $0.15 per MB.

This means that the overage rate charge for one gigabyte of data would increase from roughly $110 per GB to $134 per GB.

Additionally, long-distance calling rates both within Canada and to the United States are supposedly going up by $0.10, from $0.65 per minute to $0.75 per minute.

As previous reporting from MobileSyrup points out, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission’s (CRTC) Wireless Code has a rule that “a service provider must suspend data overage charges once they reach $50 within a single monthly billing cycle.”

However, the rule itself appears rather toothless, as the Code also states that this suspension is waived if the “account holder or authorized user expressly consents to pay additional charges,” which seems to imply that the $50 limit ceases to apply to customers once they’ve signed up for a wireless plan with specific overcharge fees listed in the fine print.

According to reporting from MobileSyrup, Bell has steadily increased its data overage rates in the last five years.

In 2016, the data overage rate was $0.06 per megabyte; in 2017, it was $0.07; in 2018, the rate jumped from $0.07 to $0.10; and in 2019, it rose again $0.12.

MobileSyrup has reached out to Bell to confirm whether these rate changes are accurate, and will update this story accordingly when the carrier responds.

Xbox’s updated Edge browser can play Stadia, access Discord

Microsoft has rolled out a new Xbox dashboard update that includes an updated version of its Edge browser.

The new Chromium version of Edge — which is available across all Xbox One consoles and the Xbox Series X/S — is capable of allowing users to stream Google Stadia games, accessing the web-based version of Discord and more.

Microsoft says that the new version of Edge promises a “fast, secure and modern browsing experience right from your console.” The Xbox’s version of Edge seems identical to the desktop version, complete with vertical tabs, favourites syncing, history and more. However, it does seem to be missing extension support.

Since Xbox consoles include mouse and keyboard support, you’ll be able to use the input method for browsing the web and playing Stadia. However, there’s currently no microphone support for live chat platforms or Discord.

The simple fact that it’s now possible to play Stadia through an Xbox console is pretty mindblowing.
