Samsung in talks with Tesla to develop next-gen self-driving chips

Report are circulating that Samsung and Tesla are looking to further their relationship by developing a new self-driving chipset for the automaker’s Full Self-Driving 4 chipset.

Samsung already makes chips for the Model 3 and other Tesla vehicles with the Full Self-Driving 3 hardware, so if the rumour is true, this will keep the Korean tech giant’s computer chips in every Tesla vehicle moving forward.

The automaker has said before that we’d see new self-driving hardware with the launch of the Cybertruck in 2022. If we’re going to hear about a new Samsung and Telsa partnership, that seems like the place to do it.

The previous self-driving chip that Samsung produced was built on the 14-nanometer technology, but the new chip is rumoured to feature 7-nanometer construction. This should increase both the speed and the power of the chip considerably. The Cybertruck self-driving tech is reportedly roughly four times as capable as the current chip, which also suggests it will include the new chip. You can learn more about the previous Tesla chip, here.

Reuters report mentions that the leading chipmaker globally — TSMC in Taiwan — builds 52 percent of the world’s chips, and Samsung is in second place with 17 percent. with this in mind, a move more into EV and vehicle chip production might help the South Korean company gain some more market share.

Telus supplies tech to Edmonton police’s online classifieds exchange zones

When you’re deciding on a safe public location to meet up with that internet stranger whose gently-used air fryer you bought on Kijiji, your first thought probably isn’t a police station.

However, that’s exactly what Telus and the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) are encouraging people to do, with the launch of three new “Buy and Sell Exchange Zones” for online classifieds meet-ups in Alberta’s capital city.

Each “zone” consists of a pair of stalls, equipped with 24/7 surveillance cameras, set-up in the parking lots of four police stations across Edmonton in total.

The concept isn’t a new one, with similar zones set up across Canada in cities including Calgary, Halton, Peel, Saskatoon, Waterloo, and Winnipeg.

The unique bit, according to the press release, is that all the technology in the zones is provided by Telus, presumably from the telecom company’s line of smart home security cameras.

While the cameras are always running, the EPS said there’s no one specifically tasked with monitoring the feed, and that footage is only accessed if there’s an incident or investigation related to an exchange.

In 2020, the EPS reportedly made “20 arrests, laid 59 charges, and recovered $44,000 worth of stolen property through online buy and sell sites,” in addition to receiving “276 reports of buy and sell scams with a total financial loss of $35,680.”

Edmonton’s four “Buy and Sell Exchange Zones” are located at the following EPS stations:
14203 50 Street Northwest
104 Youville Drive East Northwest
1351 Windermere Way
16505 100 Avenue Northwest

European Union could force all smartphone manufacturers to use USB-C charging

Europe could soon require all smartphone manufacturers to use USB-C charging, according to a new EU Commission ruling proposal.

The commission says the proposal aims to reduce e-waste and the “consumer inconvenience” resulting from different chargers. The commission also mentions that it wants manufacturers to stop selling chargers alongside electronic devices to minimize e-waste further.

“With today’s proposal… USB-C will become the standard port for all smartphones, tablets, cameras, headphones, portable speakers and handheld videogame consoles,” reads the report.

The report then says that it has reduced the number of mobile chargers in Europe from 30 to just three, with Apple’s proprietary Lightning port part of the smaller list. The report states that roughly 20 percent of devices sold in Europe feature the Lightning port, but that the EU wants to change this — possibly by forcing Apple to adopt USB-C.

EU executive vice president Margrethe Vestager made the following statement in the report:

“European consumers were frustrated long enough about incompatible chargers piling up in their drawers. We gave industry plenty of time to come up with their own solutions, now time is ripe for legislative action for a common charger. This is an important win for our consumers and environment and in line with our green and digital ambitions.”

As you may have already guessed, Apple has resisted the shift to USB-C in the past concerning the EU’s efforts. For example, last year, when the organization voted on the concept of a standard charger, Apple released a statement stating that adopting USB-C would “stifle innovation.”

In a statement to the BBC, Apple said, “We remain concerned that strict regulation mandating just one type of connector stifles innovation rather than encouraging it, which in turn will harm consumers in Europe and around the world.”

With the release of the iPhone 12, Apple stopped including a charging brick in the box of its smartphones, citing environmental concerns related to materials and shipping costs. This move also likely saved the tech giant a lot of money. The company has also shifted to USB-C charging with several of its other devices, including Macs, most iPad models and its accompanying ecosystem of accessories. Some Android devices from companies like Samsung, for example, also no longer include chargers in their boxes.

It’s unclear if this law will go through, given it’s still in the proposal stages and must first be passed by lawmakers and several governments. However, it’s possible that in a few years, Apple could be forced to adopt USB-C for the iPhones it sells in Europe.

Rogers expands 5G to Dartmouth and Bedford, Nova Scotia

Toronto-based national telecom company Rogers announced it expanded 5G coverage to more areas in Nova Scotia.

In an email release, the carrier said it expanded 5G in Dartmouth and Bedford, Nova Scotia. The expansion brings Rogers’ 5G to a total of 16 communities across the Atlantic region, including Halifax, Moncton, Saint John and Fredericton, all part of a broader series of investments in Canada’s east coast.

Along with the 5G improvement, Rogers “enhanced” wireless networks across 32 communities in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island over the last 20 months.

Rogers also boasted about its investment in wireline network upgrades, which the company says helped improve connections across 71 communities in Atlantic Canada.

“We’re proud to enhance connectivity in cities, towns, and rural communities across Atlantic Canada, especially during the pandemic when world-class connections have played a critical role in people’s lives,” said Matt MacLellan, president of the Atlantic region at Rogers.

Rogers says its ongoing investments have enabled enhanced connectivity to over 1,000 Canadian communities and will expedite plans to bring enhanced connectivity to an additional 750 communities by the end of 2021.

Here’s how to connect your Nintendo Switch ‘Pokemon Unite’ account to mobile

Though Pokémon Unite is now available on Android and iOS, it’s been playable on the Nintendo Switch for a couple of months now.

If you’re like me, you’ve already played this multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) on your mobile device, but now you’re thinking about taking the experience to your smartphone.

Unlike several other games, Pokémon Unite allows you to crossplay between Android, iOS and the Nintendo Switch, and even further, you’re also able to link your accounts.

Here’s how to do it:

When you first log onto the mobile version of Pokémon Unite, the game will ask you for your language preference and then your birthday.

After that, Pokémon Unite asks you to connect your Google account, Facebook, Pokémon Trainer Club, Nintendo Account, or create a new account.

For me, I used the Nintendo Account and entered my username and password.

Following that, the game kicked me out, which I’m not sure will happen for everyone. However, when I logged back in, I had full access to my Pokémon, items and clothing.

It’s a pretty straightforward process for anyone looking to combine accounts.

The new update also includes a battle pass that features a space theme, with the top reward being a new ‘Galatic Ghost 094’ skin for Gengar.
