Uber Eats will let you search for your next takeout with emojis

The award for the most unnecessary yet unique feature goes to Uber Eats.

The food-delivery company has just added a new feature to its mobile app and web page that allows users to search for food using emojis.

Don’t fret, you can still type in your food preference, though the feature might help if you’re abroad, and don’t know what that specific dish you’re craving is called.

The feature is embedded in the new pickup maps, which shows a list of restaurants in your immediate surroundings, and allows you to search for food with over 30 emojis, including the Pizza, Burger, Ramen emojis and more.

You can find the emoji searchable map in Uber Eats’ Android and iOS apps as well as its website in all locations where the food-delivery company’s services are available.

Here’s how to add your vaccination record as a Shortcut with iOS 15

With the impact of COVID-19 slowly dampened thanks to large-scale vaccination efforts, and a chunk of new infections gripping the unvaccinated population, restaurants, gyms, movie theatres, casinos and other indoor and outdoor businesses in several provinces across Canada, are requiring customers to show proof of vaccination to allow safe entry.

To make the procedure as swift and straightforward as possible, you can make a shortcut to your vaccination record and add it to your iOS device’s home screen, so you can access it easily, whenever and wherever needed. Follow these simple steps to add a vaccine record shortcut to your iOS device’s home screen.

  1. Begin with taking a screenshot of your vaccination record. If you don’t already have one, you’ll have to procure it from your province’s public health website (steps for that process in Ontario can be found here).Below are the steps required to create a Shortcut with iOS:
  2. Go to ‘Photos’ and tap the + icon on the top left to create a new album. Proceed to name it whatever you want, ‘vaccination record’ is a good suggestion and add the screenshot (step 1) to the album.
  3. Go to your home screen and pull down to bring up the search bar. Search for ‘Shortcuts.’
  4. Tap the icon on the top right to create a new shortcut and name it ‘Vaccination record.’
  5. Press ‘Add Action’ and type ‘Find Photos.’ Click on ‘Find Photos’ under media.
  6. Tap on ‘Add Filter,’ then select ‘Recents’ and choose whatever you named your album as (Step 2).
  7. Enable the ‘Limit’ toggle and restrict it to just one.
  8. In the search bar on the bottom, type ‘Quick Look’ and select the same under ‘Documents.’
  9. Click on the tool icon on the top right and select ‘Add to Home Screen.’
  10. Add any photo to the shortcut icon and change its name to whatever you want displayed on the home screen. Click ‘Add’ on the top right and you’ve finally created a shortcut to access your vaccination record with a single tap.

Are you interested in Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2?

Microsoft just unveiled the Surface Duo 2, a dual-screen smartphone that aims to improve on last year’s Duo smartphone.

This year’s handset features a slightly larger 8.3-inch display with a 2688 x 1892 pixel resolution, and both screens by themselves measure in at 5.8-inch. This time around, the displays also sport a 90Hz refresh rate.

Battery-wise, the device features a 4,449mAh battery split across two cells, which is a lot better than the original’s 3,577mAh battery.

Additionally, this model sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor and 5G connectivity. Further, there’s a triple camera setup with a 12-megapixel primary, telephoto and a 16-megapixel ultra-wide. On the front, the device features a 12-megapixel selfie sensor.

Moreover, the device comes in two colours, including ‘Glasier’ like the original Duo, and ‘Obsidian.’

The Surface Duo costs $1,899 and for some reason, isn’t available to pre-order on Microsoft’s Canadian website anymore (we’re not sure why). However, the handset releases on October 21st.

Are you interested in the Surface Duo 2? Let us know in the comments below.

YouTube beta testing video downloads on desktop

YouTube now has a new experimental feature that allows desktop users to download videos to their devices for offline listening.

If you’re a YouTube Premium subscriber, you can go to the YouTube Expiremintal feature page to enable this feature. Keep in mind that if you do this and have the picture-and-picture (PiP) experiment turned on, it will be disabled. This kind of sucks, and since I find the PiP feature more useful, I hope YouTube fully implements it soon.

The ability to download videos likely doesn’t sound very useful to anyone with a desktop computer, but Chromebook and laptop owners might find it appealing. One possible use case is to queue up some sick YouTube content for long car rides or other away from home excursions.

Google says that anyone with the latest versions of Chrome, Edge or Opera can use the new feature, but it enabled a download button and folder on Edge in my tests and didn’t work. Chrome prompted me to download the YouTube web app, and from there, I was able to get the feature working.

Once the feature is enabled, you can download videos by clicking on a download button next to the like and share buttons in the action bar. You can also click on the three-dot menu from any of the more browseable pages to download content.

Overall this is a pretty solid update, and like the PiP feature on iOS, I’m still perplexed that these aren’t rolling out to everyone, and instead, YouTube Premium members need to opt into them.

The Surface Laptop Studio reveal could make this your last chance to get a Surface Book

The Surface Laptop Studio likely means the Surface Book is dead.

It’s a sad day for fans of the Surface Book, although I won’t miss it much. The quirky laptop had a unique accordion hinge and let people remove the screen from the keyboard, which was a pretty neat feature. In my time with the Surface Book 3, however, I just really didn’t like the hinge.

Microsoft’s weird new Surface Laptop Studio seems like it could be a worthy successor. Internally, it’s got all the hallmarks of a high-end Surface device with powerful Intel CPU options and Nvidia graphics, just like the Surface Book. But I think the inability to detach the Laptop Studio’s screen from the keyboard completely will make the Laptop Studio a tough sell to fans of the Book.

While this also likely spells the end of the Surface Book line, those interested can still pick one up (at least, for a little longer). Microsoft’s website still has the Surface Book 3 in 13.5- and 15-inch configs, plus it’s on sale.

Only three versions of the 13.5-inch Surface Book 3 are still available, and only in French. There’s an i5 with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD and two i7 models with 32GB of RAM, one with a 512GB SSD and one with a 1TB SSD.

The 15-inch Surface Book 3 is in better shape, with all eight configurations still available on Microsoft’s website.

The discounts range from $500 to $700 off, which isn’t bad. Still, for the top-end 15-inch Surface Book, you’ll be paying almost $4,000 before tax.

Although Microsoft hasn’t confirmed to MobileSyrup what the fate of its Surface Book line will be, I’d say it’s a safe bet that once the current Book 3 models are sold, there won’t be any more, making this potentially the last chance to get a Surface Book.

Costco slashes iPhone 12 series price, other retailers might follow

Now that Apple’s iPhone 13 lineup has released, the price of the last-gen iPhone 12 series — which is almost identical to the current-gen models in some ways — is experiencing a price drop.

First shared by RedFlagDeals users ‘DJ Trance AZ,‘ Costco is one of the first Canadian retailers to slash a few dollars of the iPhone 12 series.

Check Costco’s pricing below:

It’s worth noting that the deals are exclusive to Costco members only. Still, if you are a member, the savings are pretty great and considering that the iPhone 13 includes very incremental upgrades, last year’s Apple flagship is still an excellent device.

If you want to read about the major differences between the iPhone 12 and 13 series, check out our comparison story.

Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series will reportedly lack Olympus-branded cameras

Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series has previously been rumoured to feature a collaboration with Olympus tied to its cameras, but now it seems like that won’t happen after all.

According to LetsGoDigital, Olympus/OM Digital Solutions GmbH, told the publication that the company isn’t planning to work with Samsung.

Further, Olympus didn’t say whether or not the partnership was on the table at one point. With that, it seems that the Galaxy S22 series won’t feature any Olympus branding of any kind.

Several smartphone manufacturers have partnered with camera companies, including Vivo with Zeiss, OnePlus with Hasselblad and Huawei with Leica.

Oddly, earlier rumours indicated otherwise regarding a potential Samsung and Olympus partnership. It’s possible Olympus wasn’t entirely honest with LetsGoDigital due to an NDA or perhaps, Samsung and Olympus previously were in talks at some point, but they fell apart.

Samsung will likely unveil its Galaxy S22 series in January of next year.

Xplornet launches Canada’s first-ever rural 5G standalone network

Xplornet Communications is launching a rural 5G standalone network — the first of its kind in Canada, according to the press release.

The network will be built using technology from multinational telecom giant Ericsson, in a partnership that the rural-focused internet service provider (ISP) made public back in December 2020.

Ericsson is also the technology supplier for Bell, Rogers and Telus’ respective cross-country 5G network rollouts.

Xplornet says its new 5G network will begin offering fixed wireless broadband services to residents of New Brunswick — where the company itself is headquartered — over the next six months.

While based in Atlantic Canada itself, Xplornet offers internet services to rural areas in provinces across the country.

For example, in September 13th, the ISP announced it had acquired Swift High Speed, a rural broadband provider located in Manitoba.
