Rumor mill: Joe Ryan with the Mets

We know that the New York Mets need help on the mound. This is nothing new, since it’s THE main reason why Juan Soto’s club missed the playoffs.

David Stearns wanted to save money on starting pitchers in 2025 and that hurt the club.

But this season, don’t expect the same. Even if some youngsters grow, everyone knows that it’s going to take help from the outside to aspire to big things.

And among the names to watch is Joe Ryan.

The Twins are deconstructing their lineup and the pitcher is likely to leave Minnesota soon. And that’s just as well, because the Twins would love young Canadian pitcher Jonah Tong from the Mets.

So it’s a case to watch in New York, because the club will be looking for reinforcements at some point.

By the way, speaking of the Mets, we know they also have their sights set on building a big bullpen. Seeing Devin Williams in town doesn’t change the fact that they want to retain the services of Edwin Diaz. Williams would therefore pitch in the eighth, in such a scenario.

And on that subject, we know that the Dodgers wouldn’t be the most inclined to pay Diaz… and not too surprisingly, the Yankees would be in the same boat too.

David Bednar is here. Why pay (dearly) for another closer?

It’s worth noting that, according to a few people in the business, the Blue Jays are possibly the team most to watch – aside from the Mets, of course – in the Edwin Diaz file.

Speaking of relievers, Pete Fairbanks (who won’t earn too much compared to Diaz) is likely to be on the radar of many clubs. The big markets will be snapping him up.

But keep an eye on the DBacks…

Teoscar Hernandez could leave the Dodgers

Teoscar Hernandez is quite a hitter – especially in the playoffs. The Dodgers know they’re lucky to have him at bat.

But there’s still a sense that he’s getting on some people’s nerves in L.A.

After two years there, I doubt anyone is dissatisfied with his bat or his attitude. But his base running and defensive play? That’s another story.

That’s why, during the playoffs, I wondered whether the Dodgers might not consider sending him elsewhere, to improve the defense a little.

With Shohei Ohtani as the leadoff hitter, it’s impossible to “hide” Hernandez at DH…

And now Ken Rosenthal has opened the door to the possibility. In today’s text, he says it’s not necessarily a likely option, but that Dodgers bosses might consider it. His name is circulating in discussions right now.

That said, it’s worth noting that Ken Rosenthal isn’t talking about sending Mookie Betts to right field in the event of Teoscar’s departure. To me, that would be one of the reasons for doing so.

The goal would be to bring in a center fielder to stabilize the club’s defense.

I don’t know how serious the Dodgers are about this. But if a club needs offense, has a surplus center fielder and can use the position of choice hitter for Hernandez… who knows what can happen.

To be continued.

“I think the Blue Jays are going to go crazy”

Between the contracts of Shane Bieber, Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce, the Blue Jays have spent $256 million in recent weeks. But don’t think that’s the end of it.

We know that the Blue Jays have other needs besides the rotation. The bullpen and position players are areas that can be improved over the next few weeks.

Everyone believes the Blue Jays haven’t finished shopping, but Jon Heyman went one step further.

Asked about the Blue Jays’ case, the tipster said he believes the Blue Jays will go crazy. In other words? The club isn’t exactly done making big moves.

We know that Kyle Tucker visited the Blue Jays’ facilities on Wednesday. More than ever, he’s a target.

We also know that the Blue Jays would love to be in a position to bring Bo Bichette back to town. Ideally, this would happen at second base… but we’ll see in due course.

And more and more, Edwin Diaz’s name is coming up.

To listen to Jon Heyman over the past few days, if the Mets (who signed Devin Williams) don’t bring back their ace in the ninth inning, it’s the Blue Jays who could benefit.

Whoever it is, you have to think that the revenue the Blue Jays generated in the final month of October will be used, in part, to improve the club to win one more game in 2026.

And right now, the club is stealing the show on the market. So it’s off to a good start.

“The Blue Jays may have the best rotation in the U.S.”

Since the autonomy market opened, the Blue Jays have been active. The club wanted to add quality starting pitchers, and that’s exactly what they’ve done.

Dylan Cease, of course, is the big fish… but Cody Ponce is also a nice catch with potential.

So all of a sudden, the club is starting to have quite a rotation. In addition to Cease and Ponce, the Jays are also banking on Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage and Jose Berrios, plus a few other depth options in Eric Lauer and Bowden Francis.

And Steve Phillips, who chatted about all this on MLB Network Radio, said he thinks it’s possible to defend the theory that Toronto is betting on the American’s best rotation.

Nothing less.

And in reality, it’s true that Toronto really is among the elite. The club has big names and depth, which means it’s equipped to stay up late… especially if it keeps adding. By bringing in Max Scherzer, for example.

That said, we know that there are other very big rotations across America. The Yankees, for example, will see Gerrit Cole return to an already monstrous rotation (Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, Cam Schlittler, Luis Gil and, when he returns from injury, Clarke Schmidt), and the Mariners also have a ton of big starters.

Bryan Woo, Luis Castillo, Logan Gilbert, George Kirby and Bryce Miller: it’s all very, very strong stuff.

All of which means that placing the Jays at the very top of the American rankings is perhaps a little audacious. But in reality, with Cease and Ponce, Toronto no longer has much to envy the other big rotations in the American.

And for a club that has no trouble generating offense, it’s hard to ask for much more.

Kyle Tucker visited the Blue Jays facilities in Florida

Robert Murray of FanSided reported that on Wednesday, the Toronto Blue Jays welcomed outfielder Kyle Tucker to their Dunedin, Florida facility.

The news was later confirmed by several other sources.

What you need to know is that it’s not surprising to see such news from the Blue Jays. If Tucker is expected to sign a huge contract, seeing him visit the club’s facilities is not surprising.

This kind of information doesn’t usually come out publicly. So it doesn’t necessarily mean that the Blue Jays are ahead of the game. Maybe his agent is using the Blue Jays, a club that’s not afraid to spend, to put pressure on other teams?

But hey. In reality, it’s not a negative for the Toronto club, which has beautiful facilities in Florida. And Tucker comes from Tampa Bay, which is very close to Dunedin…

It’s long been known that the Blue Jays are interested in signing the left-handed hitting outfielder.

Expectations are growing that the Blue Jays will be able to sign either Tucker or Bo Bichette. It’s possible that both will sign elsewhere, but the chances of at least one guy signing in Toronto do exist.

We’ll see what happens in the next few days. With the winter meetings approaching (next week), the file could open up sooner than we think.

George Springer is impressed by Dylan Cease’s signing

The Blue Jays came within inches of winning the World Series in 2025. In fact, they could hardly have come closer.

By necessity, the Blue Jays believe in their chances of returning to baseball’s biggest stage in 2026. They’ll have a similar line-up, albeit with a few differences.

We’re still waiting to see which hitters will be put under contract, but we know that in the rotation, the club isn’t fooling around. Shane Bieber activated his player option to stay, Cody Ponce joined the group… and Dylan Cease signed the biggest contract for a pitcher in franchise history.

And that signing impresses George Springer. The Blue Jays’ leadoff hitter says he knows how hard it is to face the pitcher, and that it’s good to have him on the right side now.

Springer, who was voted player of the year in Toronto, knows how hard it is to win the World Series. He did it (quite legally…) with the 2017 Astros, but lost in 2019 (Houston) and 2025 (Toronto) thereafter.

He must know that several guys (including himself) could see their performances regress in 2026. So adding talent and depth is paramount for a club with big aspirations.

With Dylan Cease, the Blue Jays will have a great rotation. And if a hitter and a reliever were to be added to the group, the Blue Jays would look like favorites for the 2026 season.

To be continued in the coming weeks.

Blue Jays: who to choose between Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette?

The Toronto Blue Jays are on a roll this winter, having already acquired Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce so far this off-season.

But the work isn’t over, and the Blue Jays are expected to make another splash in the coming days. However, they face a crucial decision as they look to build a club that will return to the World Series next year.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the Jays will have to choose between Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette to bolster their offense, as roster construction and salary realities force them to make a choice.

First of all, if the Blue Jays get their hands on Tucker, it will affect George Springer and Anthony Santander’s roles in the outfield. In addition, Addison Barger could then be moved permanently to the third cushion with Ernie Clement at second base and Andres Gimenez at shortstop, leaving no room for Little Doe.

Conversely, the opposite scenario creates the same problem. If Toronto retains Bichette at shortstop (or second base), Barger would move to the outfield to get regular at-bats. This would leave no room for Tucker, making it impossible to accommodate both players in the Ontario metropolis, whichever direction they take.

But who to choose? The decision remains complicated when you consider what each player brings to the table.

Tucker represents the best free agent on the market today and is expected to earn over $400 million over more than ten years. The 28-year-old outfielder posted a .266 batting average with 22 long balls and 73 runs scored in 136 games for the Chicago Cubs in 2025.

For his part, Bichette returned to form in 2025 after a 2024 season marked by injuries and underperformance. He maintained a .311 batting average with 18 home runs and a .840 OPS in 139 games, leading the league with 181 hits. His World Series performance was particularly impressive, hitting for a .348 batting average with a .923 OPS and producing six runs against the Los Angeles Dodgers, all on one leg.

Perhaps in the end, financial constraints will make the decision easier for the Toronto staff. Right now, the Jays’ payroll hovers around $250 million, and according to industry sources, Toronto isn’t expected to inflate its spending to the level of the Dodgers or the New York Mets.
