Shohei Ohtani: nine strikeouts in Dodgers win

Tonight, the Phillies were visited by the Dodgers in the first game of their division series.

Shohei Ohtani pitched in the playoffs for the first time in his career. And it didn’t start well for the Japanese, who was booed before the game even started by Philly fans. He gave up two runs in the second, then another in the third.

Things were looking much better for Cristopher Sanchez, who promptly retired Ohtani twice on strikes in his first two at-bats… but then Ohtani recovered on the mound.

In the end, Ohtani got off to a quality start, pitching six innings. He didn’t give up another run and ended up retiring no less than nine guys on strikes.

And he also took advantage of the fact that Sanchez ended up floundering in the sixth, on the mound for the Phillies. The Dodgers scored twice to make the margin (3-2) just one point for the rest of the game.

Soon afterwards, without Sanchez, the Dodgers took more advantage. Teoscar Hernandez made it 5-3 with a single swing.

Ohtani found himself in a position to win the game as Tyler Glasnow, who should be the starter in case of game #4, came into the game to pitch in relief.

The Dodgers, via Glasnow and Roki Sasaki in relief, ended up winning by a score of 5-3 without giving up any runs in the process. The next game is tomorrow in Philly.

Blue Jays crush Yankees to lead series 1-0

The long-awaited #1 duel between the Yankees and Blue Jays took place today.

After Russell Martin threw the ceremonial pitch, the Blue Jays went to work. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his first career playoff home run, making it 1-0 from the first inning.

Alejandro Kirk imitated his first baseman the very next inning.

Yankees starter Luis Gil couldn’t even finish the third inning. But Kevin Gausman was excellent for the first five innings of the game.

In the sixth, things got a little ugly. The bases filled up, but Kevin Gausman and Louis Varland managed to get out of it, giving up just one run. That made it 2-1 to the Blue Jays.

But when it was all over, the club’s forwards took charge. In the next two innings (seventh and eighth), the Blue Jays scored four and four runs respectively to make it 10-1. Alejandro Kirk hit his second home run of the game.

It was the first time the Blue Jays had won an elimination game since 2016. In 2020, 2022 and 2023, the club had been swept each time.

The next match takes place tomorrow at 4pm. Rookie Trey Yesavage will face Max Fried, who will still be pretty tough to beat. That’s why today’s win was so important for the Toronto club.

Game #1: Brewers make short work of the Cubs

Today marked the start of the MLB divisional series. And for the occasion, the Brewers made their debut against the Cubs.

Freddy Peralta and Matthew Boyd were the starting pitchers.

And from the very first at-bat, there was a run: Michael Busch hit a solo home run on the fourth pitch of the game. This gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead.

The problem was, that lead didn’t exactly last. The Brewers came to bat half an inning later, and made Craig Counsell regret his decision to start Matthew Boyd on only three days’ rest.

Boyd didn’t even finish the first inning, an inning in which the Brewers scored six runs (and in which Jackson Chourio had two hits).

And in the second inning, the Brewers continued to break it down: the club added three more runs to make it 9-1.

Caleb Durbin produced two on that sequence.

It’s worth noting, however, that during this inning, Chourio left the game due to hamstring stiffness. He had time to strike out three in two innings (yes, you read that correctly), but the Brewers are holding their breath.

Losing him for an extended period would hurt the club.

Meanwhile, Peralta has found his stride on the mound for the Brewers. The starter pitched 5.2 innings and fanned nine Cubs, allowing just two earned runs. In addition to Busch, Ian Happ hit a solo home run off Peralta.

In the eighth inning, Nico Hoerner hit a solo home run to cut the Brewers’ lead to six.

But in the end, the Brewers stayed the course and won 9-3 in the first game of the series. They take a 1-0 lead.

The series will take a day off tomorrow, with Game #2 on Monday at 9pm. Until then, we’ll be keeping a close eye on Jackson Chourio’s health.

Trey Yesavage to start game #2

The Blue Jays have announced that Trey Yesavage will pitch Game #2 of the series against the New York Yankees. So tomorrow, he’ll face none other than Max Fried in Toronto.

Shane Bieber, meanwhile, will pitch game #3 against Carlos Rodon.

If someone had told you, when the Blue Jays had six starters a few weeks ago, that Trey Yesavage (who wasn’t one of the six) would be pitching Game 2 of the playoffs, would you have believed them?

The way he’s pitched this season, the Blue Jays are surely hoping he’ll have a Cam Schlittler-like impact in the playoffs. But not going with Bieber is still a risk.

If the club loses today’s game, it’s going to be complicated to manage for the rest of the season, isn’t it?

It’s worth noting that when Bieber learned he was entitled to game #2, he was really happy. John Schneider said he couldn’t repeat his protégé’s words publicly, but the latter feels ready.

Having said that, it’s worth mentioning that having Yesavage play at home before a day off is undoubtedly one of the factors that prompted the Blue Jays to make this decision.

No pressure, kid.

Speaking of pitchers, Max Scherzer was not added to the lineup because of the opponent. Had it been the Red Sox, John Schneider might have selected him. Remember, it takes lefties against the Bombardiers’ left-handed hitters…

But even so, MadMax will be in the dugout to cheer on his teammates.

Blue Jays: no Bo Bichette, Max Scherzer or Chris Bassitt against the Yankees

The Blue Jays have unveiled their 26-man roster for the division series against the Yankees.

Reminder: all 40-man roster players who were with the organization on September 1 are eligible to play in the series. The 26-player rosters are drawn up before each new series.

Of course, we were keeping an eye on the injured Bo Bichette.

All indications were that Bichette would not be able to play, and now it’s confirmed: the star shortstop is not on the 26-player roster. Not surprisingly, Ty France (injured) and Joey Loperfido are not on the roster either.

Among the starting pitchers, we knew Jose Berrios wasn’t going to make it. And now Chris Bassitt (who finished the season on the injured list, but was eligible to return today) isn’t there either. We imagine he’s still injured.

Most importantly, Max Scherzer has been left out. He pitched five innings in a simulated game on Thursday, which was a hint that the Blue Jays weren’t going to want him in the division series.

Even though Scherzer is a legend, he just can’t keep up anymore. He may have pitched his last game in the majors… and I wonder how he got the news that he won’t be in the playoffs.

If need be, these guys can replace a player on the injured list. The player replaced would not be able to return in the current or next series, however. It’s a good idea to think about it.

This means that the club’s starters on the roster are Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, Trey Yesavage and Eric Lauer, who can act as a starter. The other nine pitchers on the roster are relievers.

Including Lauer, there are four left-handed relievers. This will be good for facing the Ben Rice and Jazz Chisholm Jr. of this world, especially considering that the club’s three true starters are right-handed.

Division Series: MLB Passion Team predictions

After an excellent first elimination round, the Divisional Series will kick off today (Saturday) for the eight remaining protagonists.

And just as we did for the Wild Card Series, Passion MLB’s columnists took a look at the upcoming duels. Here are the results:

Passion MLB

Cubs vs Brewers

Charles-Alexis Brisebois: Chicago in 4. The Brewers are struggling in the playoffs. However, the Cubs need to win quickly if they want to get out of it.

Félix Forget: Chicago in 4. The Cubs’ offense seems to be back, and it’s going to play tricks on the Brewers, who are used to floundering in the playoffs.

Maxime Trudeau: Milwaukee in 5. The Brewers didn’t finish first in MLB for nothing.

Pascal Harvey: Milwaukee in 4. The rivalry between the two clubs will be revived and the Brewers will take on the Cubs thanks to their reliability on the mound and an underrated offense.

Sébastien Berrouard: Chicago in 5. Although the Brewers do all the little things, their lack of power will sink them.

Yankees vs. Blue Jays

Charles-Alexis: Toronto in 5. The rest really did John Schneider’s team good.

Félix: New York in 4. Facing only right-handed pitchers will be a big advantage for the Yankees, who will always have their best line-up on the field.

Maxime: New York in 4. The Blue Jays will win their first playoff game since 2016 and this will be their only consolation.

Pascal: New York in 5. Although the entire country is rooting for their beloved team, I favor the Yankees because their starting rotation has fewer question marks right now than their opponents.

Sebastien: New York in 4. The Yankees’ power will be the difference against a pitching corps that lacks depth.

Dodgers versus Phillies

Charles-Alexis: Philadelphia in 5. We can expect five close games, but the Dodgers’ relievers aren’t up to the task.

Félix: Philadelphia in 5. This will be a duel of the titans, but the Phillies forward will give the Dodgers’ horrible relievers a run for their money.

Maxime: Philadelphia in 4. The Phillies’ offense will make short work of the Dodgers’ relievers.

Pascal: Philadelphia in 5. I’ve been seeing Rob Thomson’s team in my soup for a few years now, and despite the loss of Zack Wheeler, the Phillies are going to eliminate the Dodgers.

Sebastien: Los Angeles in 5. The loss of Zack Wheeler will hurt against the Dodgers’ experience and starting rotation.

Tigers vs Mariners

Charles-Alexis: Seattle in 4. The Tigers don’t have the Mariners’ resources on the mound, even if Tarik Skubal does exist.

Félix: Seattle in 4. The Mariners have quite a bit more firepower than the Guardians, and the Tigers will soon feel it.

Maxime: Seattle in 5. The Tigers will thank Tarik Skubal for giving them a chance to win the series, but one player can’t win it alone.

Pascal: Seattle in 5. The Mariners have had a chance to heal their wounds, and not even Tarik Skubal can slow down Cal Raleigh

Sébastien: Seattle in 4. The Tigers will win Tarik Skubal’s departure, but it will be all against a very complete team.

Skip Schumaker named Rangers manager

To no one’s surprise, the Texas Rangers have appointed Skip Schumaker as club manager.

Bruce Bochy, who had been the manager for three years, left on the heels of the end of his contract. It was expected that the Rangers would move on after the 2025 season – especially after the club’s unsuccessful run.

And that’s that.

A year ago, Schumaker was hired on the second floor of the Rangers to familiarize himself with the organization. Everyone saw him as the next manager, starting in 2026.

And it happened.

The Marlins had hired Schumaker for the 2023 season as manager. He had been Manager of the Year that season and had taken the Marlins to the playoffs, which was exceptional.

But now, when Kim Ng had been tapped, he knew he was living on borrowed time. He left after the 2024 season.

With Schumaker in Texas and Albert Pujols headed for the Angels, the way is open, one day, for Yadier Molina to be the Cards’ next manager. Oliver Marmol will be back in 2026, but he’s not Chaim Bloom’s man after all.

Yankees vs. Blue Jays: setting the table for the series

The Toronto Blue Jays finished first in the American League this season. The club was therefore enjoying a week off at the start of the playoffs… and waiting to find out whether it would face the Yankees or the Red Sox in its opener.

And after the brilliance of young Cam Schlittler yesterday, it was the Yankees who prevailed. We’ll be treated to a duel between the two best teams in America this season, both having finished the campaign with a 94-78 record.

Having spent the year in a fierce battle for the top of the division, the two clubs will settle their accounts for good in the coming week.

The pitchers

As we saw against the Red Sox, the Yankees have a scary rotation. Max Fried and Carlos Rodon showed why they’re so highly paid, while Cam Schlittler had one of the best playoff starts in Yankee history.

Only Roger Clemens has done so well with the Yankees since 1962.

That said, these three guys won’t be available for Game 1. Fried is expected to pitch Game 2, with Rodon and Schlittler to follow. Fried would be ready for a possible final game.

For game #1, the club is still deciding whether Luis Gil or Will Warren will get the ball. Gil seems to be the favourite at the moment, but nothing has been officially announced.

On the Toronto side, however, the club also has the weapons to stay up late. Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber and Trey Yesavage are expected to form the top line, with Chris Bassitt possibly rounding out the group.

We know that Gausman will start the series, but the rest is still unclear.

Both teams have struggled with their bullpen this season, but there’s talent on both sides. The Yankees, however, have the edge in the ninth inning (David Bednar is more reliable than Jeff Hoffman), and the Bombers have bigger names (Devin Williams, Luke Weaver and Fernando Cruz, among others).

But all these guys have struggled at times during the season: they’re not completely sure things either.

Positional players

We all know that the Yankees’ forwards are formidable. The club can field a full line-up of players who have hit at least 19 home runs this season… and the Blue Jays won’t be able to get away with it.

With most of these guys being left-handed, it’s harder for Aaron Boone to pull out the full arsenal against a left-hander. But against the Blue Jays, that won’t be a problem: guys like Ben Rice and Jazz Chisholm Jr. will play all the time.

We’ll have to keep an eye on the health of Cody Bellinger, who appeared to be injured at the end of Game #3 against the Red Sox. We expect him to be ready, that said.

But the Blue Jays, even if they don’t have as much power, have a formidable group in their own way. George Springer, who is a monster in the playoffs, is the leader of a group that also relies on guys like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Alejandro Kirk and Daulton Varsho, among others.

Anthony Santander, who is more than capable of hitting the long ball, is also a guy who could make a difference.

But of course, in Toronto, we wonder whether Bo Bichette will be able to play. We don’t expect him to, but John Schneider hasn’t closed the door either. Although, of course, it’s in his interest to keep the doubt alive, whether it’s well-founded or not.

The Jays’ big advantage in this series, however, is their defense. The club excels at that… and we know the Yankees are prone to blunders at that level.

The club was solid against the Red Sox (Anthony Volpe was particularly good), but it will be something to keep an eye on.

The managers

John Schneider has never won a playoff game as a manager. So it’s hard not to give Aaron Boone the edge in this duel.

That said, the Jays manager has found a way to take his group to the top of the division this year. You have to give him credit, though, as he’s capable of getting the best out of his current group.

Let’s see if he can do it in the playoffs… especially as he’ll be facing a manager who’ll be galvanized after beating his nemesis in the last few days.

The imponderables

This year, the Blue Jays have won eight of the 13 duels between the two clubs. The Toronto team seems to have the Bombardiers’ number… and will benefit from the support of its fans for the first two games of the series.

They’ll need to take advantage of it… because winning in the playoffs as a visitor to Yankee Stadium isn’t easy, says Wilyer Abreu.

This will be the first time in history that the Yankees and Blue Jays will meet in the playoffs.

Let’s see who will win this ultimate duel in 2025 between two teams with a battle to finish this year.
