Will Carney join Trump under the Golden Dome?

Donald Trump recently posted a message on his Truth Social network, claiming that Canada will have to pay $61 billion to integrate what he calls “our fabulous Golden Dome system”, a defense system whose total cost would be $175 billion for the United States.

Trump used the post as an opportunity to revive his recurring rhetoric that Canada could one day become the 51st state of the United States.

Trump began his post on Truth Social by declaring, “I told Canada, which is eager to become part of our fabulous Golden Dome system, that it would cost $61 billion.”

The US president, who recently announced plans for a defense system inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome, made it clear that this cost would only apply “if they remain a separate but unequal nation”.

Trump was quick to taunt Canada once again, claiming that “but it will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our beloved 51st state”, adding that the country is reportedly currently considering the possibility: “They’re looking at the offer!”.

Questioned on this subject in a CBC interview, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, while one of his spokesmen had stressed that Canada and the United States remain partners in North American defense, notably via NORAD, was keen to reaffirm his desire to reduce Canada’s dependence on the United States.

He added that he is working to have the country join the ReArm Europe initiative, a commitment he hopes to formalize by Canada Day, July 1. During his visit to the White House, Carney stated that Canada would never become the 51st U.S. state, and that the country was not for sale.

What will Mark Carney do?

Will he join Trump under the Golden Dome?

Musk, at the center of rumors, blames his son for his black eye

At a White House press conference, Donald Trump and Elon Musk appeared together despite the announcement earlier this week that Musk would be leaving the administration.

Mystery over Elon Musk’s black eye as he joins Trump in Oval Office for goodbye event

The Independent (@the-independent.com) 2025-05-30T18:09:03.617Z

The event immediately drew attention not for its political content, but for the mysterious black eye sported by Musk.

As social networks went live, a journalist finally asked Musk about the origin of his injury: he replied that his five-year-old son was responsible.

As the scandals intensify, particularly those linked to his alleged excessive drug use, Elon Musk is reportedly preparing his return to the helm of his companies.

According to several rumors, Elon Musk is considering leaving the administration with Katie Miller, wife of White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, who was also present in the Oval Office during the conference.

This unexpected link only fuels doubts about his departure, while reigniting speculation about his mysterious black eye.

Trump is angry with Putin, but the Kremlin is amused

The US President’s desire to impose himself as mediator in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia had already been widely ridiculed for several weeks, and today this ambition seems completely discredited.

A top Kremlin aide has accused Donald Trump of being “not sufficiently informed” about the situation in Ukraine after the US president said Russian leader Vladimir Putin was “playing with fire."

CNN (@cnn.com) 2025-05-28T14:38:50.097Z

After his recent statement calling Putin “crazy” was mocked by the Russian media, the Kremlin’s retort describing him as emotional starkly illustrates Trump’s loss of control over negotiations he still thought he had under control.

Getty Images

Trump, who has been trying to broker a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine since even before he took office, claiming during his campaign that the war would end on his first day in office, now seems taken aback by the complete unwillingness of Russia, and Putin in particular, to engage seriously in a process to resolve the conflict.

Instead of moving towards diplomacy, Putin has instead stepped up hostilities, launching some of the most powerful strikes on Ukraine since the invasion began.

These actions recently provoked a violent reaction from Trump on Truth Social, where he said he couldn’t understand what had possessed Putin to act in this way, going so far as to claim that Putin had “gone completely CRAZY”.

Getty Images

Trump followed this up in another post, claiming that Putin was playing with fire, also declaring, “What Vladimir Putin doesn’t realize is that without me, a lot of really bad things would have already happened to Russia, and I mean REALLY BAD.” This outburst soon provoked strong reactions from the Russian media and the Kremlin alike.

Getty Images

According to the BBC, the Kremlin called Trump’s reaction “emotional overload” and claimed he was “uninformed about Ukraine”. Trump said he was giving Putin two weeks to demonstrate he was serious about peace in Ukraine, failing which he would (perhaps) consider punitive measures against Russia.

Getty Images

Russian state media, such as RT, openly mock the American president, ridiculing his threats to Moscow and emphasizing his alarmist tone, even suggesting that he might contradict himself the very next day.

Meanwhile, faced with the absence of American aid, Ukraine has strengthened its military ties with Europe and has just signed a security agreement with Germany.

This partnership provides for long-term support, including the delivery of sophisticated weapons and, possibly, long-range missiles, with the aim of strengthening the country’s defense against Russia by expanding its offensive capabilities and securing lasting support from Berlin.

“TACO” goes viral, and Trump is annoyed

Donald Trump is accused of acting like a “chicken” on the tariff issue, which visibly annoyed him.

Reporter: Wall Street analysts have a new term called the TACO trade.. Saying Trump always chickens out on tariffs…  Trump: I kick out?Reporter: Chicken out.

Acyn (@acyn.bsky.social) 2025-05-28T17:13:22.578Z

Trump’s unusual response came at a White House press conference, held on the heels of Jeanine Pirro’s swearing-in ceremony as acting federal prosecutor.

Getty Images

A CNBC reporter had then asked him if he wished to respond to the acronym TACO, recently popularized among financial analysts to refer to his tendency to back down in his tariff war.

Getty Images

Trump was visibly taken aback by CNBC reporter Megan Casella when she asked him about the phrase “Trump Always Chickens Out” and its acronym… TACO.

She wanted to know what he thought of this formula used by some analysts to explain why markets no longer react to his tariff threats, convinced that he always backs down in the end.

Getty Images

In reaction, he responded defensively to the journalist when he finally understood the meaning of the question a few moments later, claiming that his actions were part of the “Art of the Deal”, putting tariffs too high to scare people…

Getty Images

Clearly annoyed, Trump concluded his response by calling the question “nasty”, categorically rejecting the idea that he might have backed down.

The segment, broadcast live, quickly went viral…

Elon Musk quits Trump administration after criticizing his “Big Beautiful Bill”

Elon Musk has just announced his withdrawal from the Trump administration, just days after publicly criticizing the president’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” in an interview on CBS Sunday Morning.

Elon Musk, who once called himself President Trump’s "first buddy," said he is ending his government work to spend more time on his companies. Read more: nyti.ms/4jqYNxk

The New York Times (@nytimes.com) 2025-05-29T10:38:59.754Z

This departure is likely to leave a bitter taste in her mouth, both in terms of personal and professional repercussions. Indeed, this close relationship with Donald Trump, during which he was presented as a close advisor, has provoked fierce criticism.

Getty Images

Musk’s image, and that of his companies, Tesla in particular, was seriously tarnished during this period of intense media exposure, marked by highly controversial stances and a form of arrogance displayed towards a significant part of his customer base at Tesla.

Many experts believe that Musk’s political choices have deeply hurt at least 20% of Tesla’s loyal customer base, a loss they consider irremediable for the brand.

Getty Images

In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Elon Musk expressed his disappointment at the massive spending planned in the Trump administration’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act”, pointing out that the legislation would only add to the national deficit.

In his view, it would undo the DOGE’s rigorous efforts to cut spending in several key departments, especially as the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that the bill could increase the federal debt by $3.8 trillion over ten years.

TheWashingtonPost/Getty Images

Elon Musk was appointed head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) with an ambitious mandate to reduce federal spending by $2,000 billion. However, this goal was quickly scaled back to $1,000 billion, and then to just $150 billion.

Getty Images

At the end of its mandate, the DOGE claimed $160 billion in savings, a figure that many analysts dispute, some even estimating that these measures could actually cost Americans $135 billion by 2025.

Trump rants about “trophy wives” at West Point

In keeping with presidential tradition, Donald Trump delivered a speech to freshly graduated cadets at West Point Military Academy.

"A lot of trophy wives, it doesn't work out," the president noted as he spoke to graduating cadets at the military academy.

HuffPost (@huffpost.com) 2025-05-24T20:37:55.209Z

But what was intended to be a solemn speech, in keeping with tradition, quickly deviated from its usual framework: Trump embarked on a lengthy tirade about “trophy wives”, a passage widely deemed strange and particularly inappropriate by many observers.

Getty Images

As the president shared his thoughts on real estate mogul William Levitt’s professional career, according to HuffPost and USA Today, Donald Trump embarrassingly veered into the latter’s personal life.

He claimed that Levitt had divorced him to marry a “trophy wife”, adding that “it didn’t end very well for him”.

Getty Images

Donald Trump, approaching his 79th birthday, still married to his third wife Melania Trump, 55, but whose conspicuous absence since the start of his second term has continued to fuel commentary, went on to deliver to the cadets his very personal take on “trophy wives”.

A moment which, unsurprisingly, elicited some discomfort: “I have to tell you, a lot of trophy wives, it doesn’t work.”

Getty Images

Trump concluded this very personal anecdote about the late William Levitt by declaring, “But it made him happy, at least for a while,” then adding that the man ended up remarrying another woman!

The presidential slap that went viral around the world

An incident filmed on the arrival of the presidential plane in Vietnam, during the official visit of Emmanuel Macron accompanied by his wife, quickly made the rounds of the world.

They were just playfighting. That was French President Emmanuel Macron‘s explanation for video images that appeared to show his wife, Brigitte, pushing her husband away with both hands on his face.

The Associated Press (@apnews.com) 2025-05-26T13:25:03Z

In the footage, many accuse the First Lady of pushing and even slapping the French President.

The incident occurred moments after the plane doors opened. In the images, President Macron can be seen talking with a person whose identity is obscured by the camera angle to his right.

Suddenly, an arm wearing a red sleeve appears to push the French president in the face. Macron steps back slightly, then, realizing that the plane door is now visible to the cameras and media, waves goodbye.

/CaptureLeParisien

Moments later, it is revealed that it was First Lady Brigitte Macron, wearing a red jacket, who was behind this unusual incident captured by the media. The presidential couple then made their way down the steps of the plane, visibly uneasy.

The images, described by some as a push and by others as a slap in the President’s face, quickly went viral, fuelling speculation about a possible feud within the French presidential couple.

Getty Images

Amply questioned about the incident, Emmanuel Macron assured the Associated Press that it was just a game, adding that he was simply joking with his wife: “We argue […] joking with my wife”.

King Charles expressed his deep attachment to Canada and paid tribute to its identity

At the invitation of Prime Minister Mark Carney, King Charles opened the 45th session of the Canadian Parliament and delivered the Speech from the Throne, becoming the first monarch to do so since his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in 1977.

King Charles, speaking during a symbolic visit to show support for Canada at a time it has faced US annexation threats, expressed his love for Canada and said the country would remain 'strong and free' reut.rs/3SSxGAn

Reuters (@reuters.com) 2025-05-27T15:28:10.081Z

This visit took place in a singular climate, marked by the tensions provoked by US President Donald Trump, who recently expressed his wish to integrate Canada as the 51st state of the United States.

Getty Images

King Charles opened his speech with personal remarks, expressing his deep attachment to Canada and hailing Canada’s unique, globally recognized identity, underlining the national pride, unity and prospects that drive the country.

King Charles recalled that this was his 20th visit to Canada, saying that with each visit, a little more of the country entered his heart.

Getty Images

He also acknowledged the unceded territories of the First Nations, stressing the importance of respect and reconciliation, an explicit recognition unprecedented in an official speech by the monarchy in Canada.

King Charles then reminded the audience that Canada, like the rest of the world, was facing a new reality marked by profound upheaval.

Getty Images

Echoing the words of Prime Minister Mark Carney, he emphasized that the country is undergoing a transformation unprecedented since the Second World War, a pivotal period that is enabling Canadians to reinvent themselves, nurture great ambitions and take bold action as a free nation, while forging new global alliances based on our distinctive values.

Trump: “Something has happened to Putin”

While the President of the United States tries by all means to get involved in the conflict by proposing peace initiatives, which many consider to be very favorable to Moscow, Vladimir Putin launches the most intense bombardments since 2022, targeting the Ukrainian capital in particular.

President Donald Trump said he doesn’t know “what the hell happened” to Russian President Vladimir Putin and that he is “not happy with what Putin is doing” after Moscow launched its largest aerial attack of its three-year war on Ukraine overnight.

CNN (@cnn.com) 2025-05-25T23:55:27.015Z

This new outbreak of violence quickly prompted Donald Trump to react on Truth Social. He said he no longer recognized the Russian president, even though Russia was conducting a prisoner exchange with Kiev at the time of the strikes.

Getty Images

This is the second time Donald Trump has directly attacked Vladimir Putin in posts on Truth Social.

The first dates back to a time when peace negotiations were beginning, when Trump begged the Russian president to stop the forwards, writing “Vladimir, STOP!”. These words went around the world, provoking both mockery and discomfort among many observers.

Getty Images

But this time, Trump goes even further in this new post, once again reacting to Putin’s actions, whom he bluntly accuses of having lost his mind: “He’s gone completely CRAZY!”.

Getty Images

The US President claims to have always enjoyed a good relationship with Vladimir Putin, but declares on Truth Social that “something has happened to him”.

According to CNN, a few hours before his post on Truth Social, Donald Trump, visibly taken aback by Putin’s actions, had told reporters, “I don’t know what happened to Putin.”

Getty Images

This reaction comes at a time when many observers have claimed, since the start of the conflict, that the Russian president never really intended to make peace with Ukraine. Trump concludes by warning that if Putin persists in his desire to take control of the whole country, it will “lead to the downfall of Russia”, in his own words.

Trump again threatens Europe with 50% tariffs

Donald Trump once again threatens Europe with 50% tariffs starting in June.

BREAKING: President Trump threatens the E.U. with a sweeping 50% tariff, saying that trade talks with the region are "going nowhere."

NBC News (@nbcnews.com) 2025-05-23T12:19:04Z

In his view, trade negotiations with European countries are going nowhere, and he once again accuses the European Union of having been created primarily to take commercial advantage of the United States.

Getty Images

Trump spoke out on the subject in a tirade published on Truth Social, letting his frustration shine through: “Our discussions with them are going nowhere!”.

On Truth Social, Trump asserts that the European Union imposes, in his opinion, excessive trade barriers, value-added taxes, sanctions targeting American companies as well as various currency manipulations.

Getty Images

In his view, these practices have contributed to a trade deficit with the United States of over $250 billion a year, a level he deems unacceptable.

Since Donald Trump unleashed the global trade war on his arrival in the White House, the European Union seems so far to be successfully standing up to him. This apparent resistance seems to be stoking the president’s anger.

Getty Images

Trump concludes his fiery statement by calling for a 50% tariff on imports from the European Union from June 1. He stressed, however, that this measure would not apply to products manufactured or assembled on American soil.
