Autism Screening as Early as 9 Months

A simple analysis of a child could diagnose a pervasive developmental disorder.

Researchers at McMaster University in Ontario, have developed an early detection screening test for autism, where a simple analysis of a 9-month-old baby could detect the developmental disorder.

During the study, Dr. Mel Rutherford used an oculometer, an instrument that measures eye movement, testing 15 newborns having elevated risks for autism and 50 other infants.

Presently, diagonostic screening for autism begins at age 2.

In Canada, around 69 000 people have been affected by autism.
