Babies with depressed moms don’t get a good night’s sleep

Babies whose mothers suffer from psychological problems have lower quality sleep.

An Australian study found that the psychological issues experienced by mothers have a real effect on their baby’s ability to sleep.

It seems that baby sleep disorders are related to the psychological health of their mother.

Mothers who suffer from postpartum depression, for example, often complain of being awakened by the crying of their baby at night.

90 mothers and their five to twelve-month old babies were followed for the study. 39 depressed of the women were depressed. Researchers found that when mothers felt supported and encouraged, the sleep issue showed significant improvement.

Nurses showed the mothers behaviours to adopt with their baby. These information sessions were held over five days. Meanwhile, there was a marked improvement in the amount of sleep and tears during the night. Moreover, they fell asleep more quickly and the quality of their sleep was thus improved.
