Billy Talent gets back to its roots

A concert at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto takes the band on a walk down memory lane.

Billy Talent is getting ready to head out on tour but the Toronto band took the time to play a show on Tuesday night (June 8) in a small local tavern. It brought the musicians back to a time when they did the small bar tour, back to a time when many people told them they would never make it.

After the third song, energetic singer Ben Kowalewicz told the crowd: "This is where we grew up, on this stage, and this is where we’ll die."

Three months ago, the band performed a sold out show at the Air Canada Centre. Tuesday night, the group played with the same intensity even though it was only in front of a few hundred people.

Kowalewicz took the opportunity to thank fans for their support and added: "We’ve played every club a million times and were told we weren’t gonna make it by everyone. I was told my voice was awful and weird."

Billy Talent leaves soon for Europe and South Africa. The band returns to Canada to headline the Festival d’été de Québec on Saturday, July 17.
