Black Eyed Peas cleared in copyright case

Band was accused last January of copying another artist’s song.

After nearly two years, hip hop group the Black Eyed Peas has been cleared of a copyright lawsuit accusing them of copying another artist’s work for their hit single Boom Boom Pow, reports AllHipHop News.

Last week, a judge with the United States District Court of Chicago found that the hit group had not stolen the work of musician Phoenix Phenom, ruling that while the two songs were indeed similar, there were not enough similarities to warrant a finding against the Peas.

Phenom – the stage name of Ebony Latrice Batts – and songwriter Manfred Mohr filed the lawsuit claiming that the band had stolen their song Boom Dynamite, after it was given to the Peas’ label for consideration.

"My clients submitted their copyrighted song ‘Boom Dynamite’ to Interscope Records after Interscope had shown interest in some of their music, and the Black Eyed Peas later copied the song when they wrote ‘Boom Boom Pow,’" attorney Ira Gould explained last January.
