Black Eyed Peas kick off the World Cup

The highly anticipated soccer event is taking place in Africa for the first time. The 2010 edition opens on June 10 in the Soweto district of Johannesburg, South Africa. There is a star-studded gala of performances planned by the Black Eyed Peas and many other internationally-renowned artists.

Besides the Peas, other confirmed artists and groups include Shakira, John Legend and Alicia Keys, as well as Juanes, Amadou & Mariam, Tinariwen, Vieux Farka Touré and Angélique Kidjo.

South Africa is benefitting from this unique opportunity when all the eyes of the world are upon it. It announced local talent including  BLK JKS, Parlotones and Vusi Mahlasela will perform.

In a statement, FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke said, "We are thrilled to have a concert of such magnitude and performing talent raise the curtain on the first FIFA World Cup in Africa. It is testament to the universal and unifying power of football and music, and will start the competition off on the right note — of celebration."

There’s room for 30,000 fans in Orlando Stadium and millions more will be able to watch the gala broadcast live around the world.
