Calcium supplements can be harmful to your health

Supplements to combat osteoporosis increase the risk of heart problems.

It has long been recommended that people with osteoporosis take calcium supplements to prevent fractures that could occur following a fall, especially among the elderly.

After extensive analysis of 11 studies, New Zealand researchers now claim that calcium supplements can be actually harmful to human health.

The British Medical Journal reports on a study that found these supplements increase the risk of heart problems and the chances of a heart attack by 25 to 30%.

However, the study by Dr. Ian Reid from the University of Auckland does not indicate whether there is a higher mortality with calcium supplements. The increased risk was independent of age, gender and type of supplement consumed.

Researchers recommend another way to strengthen bones. They suggest that people consume a diet rich in calcium which does not increase the chances of developing serious problems.
