Calgary pulls the plug on its jazz festival

The city of Calgary is forced to cancel its jazz festival at the last minute.

If you’re a jazz fan heading to Calgary in the next few days to soak up your favourite music, you might want to sit down for this news.

Just two days before the Calgary Jazz Festival was supposed to start, organizers announced that the event will not take place. They blame insufficient funding and have opted not to go ahead with a scaled down version of their original line-up. It’s a real shame for locals and tourists alike who hold tickets to catch renowned jazz musicians like Ben E. King and Chick Corea, two of the biggest stars in jazz today.

Fortunately, several theatre owners and bars where artists were booked are trying to make arrangements to present some of the shows anyway. However, keep in mind that diehards who bought a Calgary Jazz Festival pass will also have to pay an entrance fee for each concert, as opposed to the free admission they expected with the festival wristband.

People who have plans to visit Calgary for this event are encouraged to contact the venues directly and wait for word from festival organizers about getting reimbursed for their passes.

This would have been the 31st edition of the Calgary Jazz Festival.
