The genius of one of Quebec’s best dramatists, Robert Lepage, will be showcased tonight (September 27) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, with the opening of the first of four chapters of the opera by Richard Wagner, Das Rheingold.

The Met asked Lepage to stage the four chapters of this huge choral project, and tonight is the big opening night. If you’re in New York, you can view the live show on huge screens at Times Square or Lincoln Center Plaza.

During the autuman, many Canadians enjoy a trip to the city that never sleeps to soak up its vibrant cultural scene. The second chapter (which is actually the first since Das Rheingold is the prologue of the trilogy Der Ring des Nibelungen) will be introduced sometime in April 2011 and the 3rd and 4th will be in 2012.

If you’re unable to attend the New York production, mark your calendar for Saturday, October 9, when Lepage’s production will broadcast in 150 theatres across Canada.
