Bomb threat confirmed in Springfield, Ohio

Thursday morning in Springfield, Ohio, City Hall and several other buildings were evacuated due to a bomb threat. City authorities reacted quickly after receiving an e-mail at 8:24 a.m. threatening several public buildings as well as local media.

The threat was taken very seriously by the authorities, who prioritized the safety of the employees concerned as well as Springfield residents. A city spokesperson asked residents to stay away from City Hall during the police response.

Local police and neighboring jurisdictions responded quickly to the scene and maintained a strong police presence throughout the morning.

The city of Springfield, Ohio, is also at the center of unfounded rumors spread by the former U.S. president.

The incident takes place in a particular context, influenced by controversial statements made during the presidential debate, where Trump had shocked by claiming that migrants were eating the pets of Springfield residents.

These statements were refuted as false allegations stemming from a conspiracy theory. However, they were amplified, notably by Trump’s running mate J.D. Vance and Elon Musk, inflaming right-wing social media.

The misinformation spread by former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, is only exacerbating tensions within the community and between migrants in the face of the current crisis according to local leaders in Springfield.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the bomb threat and are asking for the public’s help in providing any information that may advance the investigation.

Trump and Harris shake hands at 9/11 commemoration

In the first of a series of solemn ceremonies commemorating the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 attacks, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris exchanged a handshake, just hours after their first presidential debate, when they met in person for the first time.

The ceremony took place at the 9/11 Memorial Plaza at Ground Zero in lower Manhattan, in the presence of President Joe Biden, former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg and several other guests.

As Kamala Harris, alongside Joe Biden, chatted with Chuck Schumer, Mike Bloomberg drew his attention to Donald Trump, who held out his hand to exchange a few brief words. Trump showed a rare cordiality towards an opponent, returning the handshake that Kamala Harris herself had initiated at the start of the debate the day before.

A moment that did not go unnoticed as the event, designed to commemorate the 2,977 victims of the September 11th tragedy, was about to get underway.

With presidential candidates avoiding campaigning during the day of commemoration of the September 11, 2001 attacks, many wondered whether Trump and Harris would meet again after the previous day’s major debate.

The two candidates put their rivalry aside, if only for a moment.

After the Ground Zero memorial, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump were scheduled to travel to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to visit the Flight 93 memorial.

Later in the day, Biden and Harris would take part in a third 9/11 commemoration, this time at the Pentagon.

The man arrested at Trump’s rally wanted to display a banner

Stephen A. Weiss, a protester, was arrested last week at a Donald Trump event in Pennsylvania after attempting to unfurl a protest banner against the former president during the rally.

At Donald Trump’s campaign rally, Weiss, 36, allegedly faked a foot injury to hide a tube of glue, presumably intended to hang a banner with an anti-Trump message he had written.

Getty Images

The exact content of the message remains unknown, as event staff reportedly discarded the banner after the altercation.

Stephen A. Weiss is charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and disrupting a meeting after being arrested while running across the arena floor, jumping over the barrier in the media area and shouting in the direction of the stage where Trump was speaking. He was then quickly subdued by police and security guards on the scene.

Getty Images

Weiss, who was accompanied by a second man at the event, who denied any knowledge of the planned protest, was questioned by the Secret Service and released that evening.

Questions are being raised about security measures at Trump rallies, especially given that this is already the second incident in Pennsylvania.

Getty Images

The first incident, with much more serious consequences, occurred on July 13 in Butler, when gunfire erupted in the direction of the outdoor stage at Trump’s rally. This event resulted in minor injuries to Trump and several casualties, including one death, among the crowd.

After this event, Trump campaign officials had promised that security measures for the former president’s rallies would be significantly stepped up.

Fortunately, Weiss’ intentions seemed to be rather peaceful.

His first court appearance is scheduled for October 9.

Russia paid well-known right wing media for propaganda, according to the DOJ

Merrick Garland, the US Attorney General, revealed in an official announcement the details of a covert operation as the US discovered that Russia had set up a sophisticated pro-Russian propaganda plan by transferring millions of dollars to Tenet Media, a US media company, which employed influencers with several million subscribers.

According to Garland, this company paid thousands of dollars to far-right influencers to spread pro-Russian propaganda and influence the 2024 presidential elections on social networks and YouTube.

The Justice Department has indicted two individuals, imposed sanctions on 10 individuals and entities, and seized 32 Internet domains linked to these harmful activities, which the department claims were orchestrated at the request of the Russian government.

The indictment revealed in New York accuses two employees of RT, the Kremlin’s media arm, of transferring $10 million to an unidentified company, listed as “Company 1” in the court documents.

However, according to CNN, it would appear that this company is actually Tenet Media.

On its website, Tenet Media describes itself as a network of commentators focused on Western political and cultural issues. Its mission is to support creators who challenge institutions, and to promote rigorous and honest debate on current issues.

Lauren Southern

Tenet Media features several influencers, including Lauren Southern, described as a Canadian journalist, documentary filmmaker, author and mother who has appeared on Fox News and Sky News.

Southern, who previously worked for Rebel Media, a right-wing Canadian media outlet, has 147,000 followers on Instagram, 562,000 followers on X (formerly Twitter) and 712,000 subscribers on YouTube.

She has generally tackled Canadian propaganda topics, but in the Tenet Media category of her YouTube account, she asserts that the justice system has failed Derek Chauvin (the police officer who took George Floyd’s life) and criticizes the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote, among other things.

Tim Pool

Also according to the Tenet Media website, Tim Pool, a podcast host based in West Virginia, is considered a credible journalist and has, according to his description, collaborated with Fox News, NBC, Reuters, MSNBC, Al Jazeera and BBC News.

Tim Pool has over 400,000 followers on Instagram, 1.37 million subscribers on YouTube and 2.1 million followers on X (Twitter) and focuses mainly on American politics with right-wing positions.

He claims in a statement to have been unaware of Tenet Media’s ties to Russia, but through his videos he proves to be a strong critic of aid to Ukraine.

Tim Pool was also recently targeted by the Kamala Harris campaign, which broadcast one of his videos in which he claimed that Trump had every right to imprison elected Democrats. Pool has said he will defend himself in court.

Tayler Hansen

Also on Tenet Media, Tayler Hansen is presented as a field journalist.

He has 173,000 followers on X (formerly Twitter) and, through his right-wing content, shares Tenet Media posts illustrating altercations and civil protests in the US on social networks.

Matt Christiansen

Matt Christiansen is a political commentator from Montana. He first gained popularity in 2016 through his YouTube channel, where he offers analysis of current events, with a particular focus on constitutional philosophy, according to Tenet Media.

With 215,000 subscribers on YouTube, he very often covers topics involving Democratic elected officials, January 6 prosecutors, the Black Lives Matter movement, Dr. Anthony Fauci, as well as various other topics related to popular conspiracy theories.

Dave Rubin

Tenet Media also features Dave Rubin, a New York Times bestselling author, humorist and television personality best known for his political commentary. He is the host of The Rubin Report on YouTube.

With 1.5 million followers on X (twitter) and 2.4 million subscribers on YouTube, Rubin’s interviews include such staunch Trump supporters and Democratic critics as Dennis Quaid, Roseanne Barr and Russell Brand.

Benny Johnson

Finally, the last influencer highlighted by Tenet Media, Florida-born Benny Johnson, is known for his podcast The Benny Show. He broadcasts live every day to his millions of subscribers.

Johnson has 2.7 million subscribers on X (formerly Twitter) and 2.4 million subscribers on YouTube, where he tackles various topics related to American politics, including pro-Trump and anti-Kamala Harris positions.

Of these influencers singled out by the DOJ, several have already commented on the situation and present themselves as victims of this Russian plot… but they were paid by Tenet Media, which, for its part, received nearly $10 million for this operation.

In response to these accusations, Vladimir Putin has declared… his support for Kamala Harris.

Trump is still in big trouble in NYC

Judge Juan Merchan has, for the third time, refused to recuse himself from Donald Trump’s criminal case in New York, one of the major court cases involving the former president. Trump, despite his recent allegations accusing the judge of having ties to Kamala Harris, his political rival, failed to secure his recusal.

In his ruling, Judge Merchan once again rejected Donald Trump’s arguments, calling them “old, unfounded allegations”.

Getty Images

Judge Merchan stated that the lawyer had merely repeated arguments that have been rejected by the Court and other courts.

The judge also mentioned that the defense was resorting to previously refuted allegations.

Merchan was also particularly critical of Todd Blanche, Trump’s lawyer, and his colleagues, stressing the importance of professionalism.

Getty Images

Trump, through his lawyers, argued that there was a conflict of interest involving the judge since Vice President Kamala Harris, Democratic presidential candidate and Trump’s rival, as well as Merchan’s daughter, were both involved in political campaigns.

Both the prosecutor of record, Alvin Bragg, and Judge Merchan have deemed this argument frivolous and assert that Trump has not identified any new facts or change in the law that would justify a different result.

Trump is attempting to escape his sentencing set for September 18, following his conviction by a jury on May 30 on 34 counts of first-degree falsifying business records.

Getty Images

Trump retains a glimmer of hope, however, following a recent Supreme Court ruling granting broad immunity to presidents.

Judge Merchan has yet to rule on a defense motion seeking to set aside Trump’s guilty verdicts in the case.

A look back at that Donald Trump and Elon Musk interview

The recent conversation between Elon Musk and Donald Trump on the social network X, presented by Trump as a historic event, turned out to be a complete disaster for the former president’s election campaign.

While Elon Musk suspiciously invoked “a DDoS attack” on X to justify being more than 45 minutes behind schedule, Trump’s incoherent speech, punctuated by serious speech problems, his inappropriate comments on Kamala Harris’s beauty, and his nebulous assertions about a possible flight to Venezuela in the event of electoral defeat, contributed to the monumental failure of this interview, exacerbating the disorder of a campaign already in crisis for the former president.

One might think that Donald Trump’s campaign couldn’t be in more trouble after the withdrawal of Joe Biden and the meteoric rise of Kamala Harris, his new opponent.

However, the conversation between Trump and Musk on X, initially billed as a highlight for his re-election campaign, turned out to be a further disaster for the former president.

Monday night’s event had been billed as an opportunity for Trump to discuss crucial issues in front of a large online audience. However, the experience turned into a veritable nightmare, both technically – evoking the failed launch of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s presidential campaign on this very platform – and in terms of the interview itself, during which Trump physically seemed to struggle to express himself normally.

Getty Images

From the outset, the livestream on X was marred by major technical problems, preventing many users from accessing the interview for over 45 minutes.

The chaos was quickly mocked and criticized on social networks, sparking anger and frustration. Elon Musk attributed these malfunctions to “a DDoS cyber attack” targeting the platform.

However, this explanation was greeted with skepticism by many, who pointed out that such a forward would probably have had repercussions on the entire X platform, not just the livestream.

Getty Images

Once the “technical problems” had been resolved, the interview between the two billionaires began. Trump encountered serious speech difficulties, as he discussed his experience on his assassination attempt and his usual topics. His communication problems led some listeners to compare him to “Daffy Duck”.

Getty Images

Afterwards, Trump made an odd remark when referring to Kamala Harris’s beauty on the TIME cover, comparing her to that of his wife, former first lady Melania Trump.

During this strange, rather one-sided conversation with Elon Musk, the former president also said he wanted to move to Venezuela if he lost the election, arguing that Venezuela would be much safer than the USA.

He insisted to Musk that the next time they met, it would be in Venezuela.

Clearly, this is not a good moment in history for the two men.

The neverending war between Elon Musk and Sam Altman

Elon Musk seems determined to resume his legal battle against OpenAI.

In a new complaint filed in a federal court in northern California, he accuses CEO and co-founder Sam Altman, as well as president Greg Brockman, of deception and manipulation.

Musk is reviving charges from a previous complaint against OpenAI executives, which he had withdrawn earlier in the year, while adding new allegations. In this latest lawsuit, he details how he was allegedly cheated out of millions of dollars, and accuses OpenAI executives of marketing the company’s technology without his knowledge, employing unfair strategies.

Getty Images

Musk claims to have been “duped” by Altman and Brockman into investing and founding millions of dollars in OpenAI under false pretenses, he says, and accuses the two men of manipulating him from the outset, pivoting towards a profit-driven model.

According to Musk the true mission of OpenAI has been subverted by prioritizing shareholder value over the public good. Musk claims that the new mission is an affront to the original purpose that led him to create OpenAI in the first place.

Getty Images

In an earlier lawsuit, Musk dropped his lawsuit after OpenAI published emails that seemed to weaken his accusations.

The emails revealed that Musk himself believed that the company needed to generate significant profits to support artificial intelligence ambitions, contradicting his current accusation that OpenAI was improperly profit-seeking.

OpenAI rejected Musk’s accusations, calling them “incoherent” and “frivolous”.
