Former Twitter workers $500 million lawsuit dismissed

Elon Musk wins a legal victory in the face of a lawsuit filed by former employees of Twitter, now renamed X. A federal court in San Francisco has dismissed the suit by former Twitter employees seeking $500 million in compensation.

Elon Musk was accused of failing to pay $500 million to more than 6,000 laid-off employees following his acquisition of Twitter, a transaction valued at $44 billion and finalized on October 27, 2022.

The judge in charge of the case determined that the fired employees were not entitled to severance pay under the federal Employee Retirement Insurance Security Act.

Among his first measures after acquiring Twitter in 2022, Musk had made a significant reduction in the company’s workforce. In response, laid-off employees filed several lawsuits seeking financial compensation.

Elon Musk announced at the time that all employees leaving the company would receive severance pay equivalent to three months’ salary.

However, the plaintiffs alleged that some employees had received only one month’s salary or no severance pay at all.

Ellen DeGeneres retires completely

Ellen DeGeneres made it abundantly clear at her show in Santa Rosa, California: she’s done with the industry.

While there for three consecutive nights on her Ellen’s Last Stand… Up tour, the comedian announced to the audience that they would never see her on stage again, or at all, the SFGate reported first.

A fan in the audience reportedly asked her if she would be appearing in Broadway shows or movies.

At this point, the comedian replied:

“No. This is the last time you’ll see me. After my Netflix Special, I’m done.”

Later, another fan reportedly begged her to reprise the voice of Doris in an upcoming Pixar film, but Ellen insisted that wasn’t going to happen:

“No, I’m going bye-bye, remember,”

So it seems it’s really the end of the road for the once superstar daytime host and comedian.

Her tour ends in Minneapolis on August 17.

George Clooney calls on Joe Biden to step down

In a surprising and devastating op-ed published in the New York Times, George Clooney urged President Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential race.

In doing so, he joins a growing number of celebrities who support the Democratic Party and are calling on the president to cede his seat to another candidate to face Donald Trump in the next election.

Getty Images

Clooney, a longtime Biden supporter and friend, said he was devastated to have to admit that the Joe Biden who was with him three weeks ago at a fundraiser was neither the Joe Biden of the famous “big f*cking deal” of 2010, nor even the Joe Biden of the 2020 elections.

Clooney expresses his dismay at seeing Biden weakened, and his comment highlights the loss of confidence among some of Biden’s most loyal supporters and the growing calls for new leadership within the Democratic Party.

Getty Images

Although Clooney recognizes Biden’s accomplishments and praised his contribution to saving democracy in 2020.

The actor expresses that the president’s current state of health and energy level could threaten the Democratic Party’s chances in the next election.

Getty Images

Clooney’s appeal comes after Joe Biden’s disappointing performance in the televised debate against Donald Trump, as we know.

Remember that a few weeks before the debate, a fundraiser organized by Clooney for Joe Biden in Los Angeles had raised over $30 million! Quite a turnaround for the well-known actor…

Getty Images

However, Clooney seems to share the growing concerns of many Democratic legislators and donors.

As the Democratic National Convention and several fundraising events approach, uncertainty prevails.

At the time of writing, President Biden remains committed to staying in the race until the end.

Arrest warrant issued for Alexey Navalny’s widow

A recent court ruling in Moscow has ordered the arrest in absentia of Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny. Russian court representative Kira Yarmysh confirmed the decision, reporting that the Basmannyy district court had charged Yulia Navalnaya with “participation in an extremist organization”.

Alexey Navalny,a well-known critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, died on February 16 while imprisoned in a Siberian penitentiary. He had been convicted of creating and financing an extremist group while serving a cumulative 19-year sentence.

Getty Images

Navalny’s death sparked national and international outrage, highlighting the dangers of opposing Putin’s regime, which has been in place for almost 25 years. His death came just weeks before the forthcoming Russian presidential elections, due to start on March 15. The international community regards these elections as mere formalities, while Putin’s fifth term was all but assured.

Getty Images

Navalny’s return to Russia in 2021 marked the beginning of his final chapter. Navalny, who had been treated in Germany for poisoning by novichok, a Soviet-era neurotoxin, was arrested on arrival in Russia. Navalny had rejected the charges that led to his imprisonment, believing them to be politically motivated.

Getty Images

Despite the threats, Navalny remained steadfast in his criticism of Putin.

In the aftermath of her husband’s death, Yulia Navalnaya had accused the Russian authorities and President Putin of being behind the tragedy.

Getty Images

In an eight-minute video posted on her husband’s social account, Navalnaya accused Putin of killing the father of her children and taking away the person she loved most. She claimed that the Russian authorities were hiding her husband’s body in order to conceal the true cause of death.

Getty Images

The Kremlin firmly rejects any allegation of involvement in Navalny’s death. Yulia Navalnaya is determined to pursue her husband’s vision for a better Russia.
