Biden warns Netanyahu, multiple countries ask for a ceasefire

US President Joe Biden issued a stern warning to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that international support is dwindling, at a Democratic fundraising event in Washington. Biden urged the Israeli prime minister to make tough decisions, and even to reshuffle his cabinet, according to CNN.

Several international partners have called for an end to hostilities in Gaza due to the current situation. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon issued a statement calling for a lasting ceasefire and stressing the gravity of the humanitarian situation.

The trio called for the resumption of a recently suspended ceasefire that allowed for the delivery of humanitarian aid and the release of hostages. They defended Israel’s existence while condemning Hamas for its tactics and declaring that Hamas had no role to play in the future governance of Gaza.

The United States, despite advocating a lasting ceasefire at the UN Security Council, vetoed the resolution calling for an immediate cessation of all hostilities. This attitude contrasts sharply with the comments of President Biden and other Western governments, as well as international organizations, who have called for an end to Israeli attacks on Gaza. The debate is expected to continue, as the UN General Assembly plans to vote on a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire following the failure of the Security Council’s proposal.

Biden will also meet with the families of Americans who were taken hostage by Hamas during the conflict.

Many hostages were released during the previous humanitarian ceasefire.

However, there are still unresolved hostage situations, and the international community is losing patience with Israel’s response to Hamas.

Since the Hamas attack on October 7, it is estimated that more than 18,000 Palestinians have been killed, half of them civilians.

Yes, it was a record year for heat and extreme weather events

Scientists and political decision-makers are constantly alarmed by the rapid warming of the Earth.

Unfortunately, the data are becoming more striking with each passing month…

A series of extreme and unprecedented weather conditions were punctuated by intense heat records across the globe in 2023. The rapid and sudden intensification of numerous hurricanes and typhoons took the scientific community particularly by surprise.

This demonstrates a worrying trend… that storms are gaining in strength more rapidly as a result of climate change.

Incidents of heat and drought are just a few examples of the unusually high temperatures experienced by the planet in 2023.

Getty Images

In fact, the summer of 2023 was the hottest ever recorded on Earth.

The El Niño phenomenon greatly intensified the warming trend in 2023, adding to particularly high solar activity on top of global warming.

Temperature records were even broken for five consecutive months.

The symbolic 1.5°C mark set in the Paris Agreement was exceeded in September… and global temperatures rose by more than 2°C compared with the pre-industrial era!

October was no exception… it was the hottest month on record.

Uncontrollable fires raged in several countries, including Canada and Greece, exacerbated by long periods of intense heat and drought. The situation was particularly devastating in Canada, where an estimated 5% of forests were destroyed by wildfires, which released huge clouds of smoke into the atmosphere and spread to the United States… and even Europe.

Several Canadian companies leave X

X, formerly Twitter, has found itself at the center of a storm concerning extremist and hateful ideologies and the proliferation of hateful and offensive content, since Elon Musk’s takeover of the platform, and in recent months several companies have decided to withdraw all their advertising content, and, according to CBC News, many leading Canadian organizations and advertisers are also reconsidering their relationship with the platform.

Several Canadian advertisers, including Samsung Canada, Pathways Alliance, Bell Media, Angus Reid and others, found that their ads were appearing in extremist news feeds on X. And according to a recent CBC News report, some brands have seen their ads exposed in content associated with white supremacists and white nationalists, and this has led several Canadian companies to suspend all advertising on the social network.

The advertising exodus of brands isn’t limited to Canadian companies. Many companies, including Disney, Apple, Amazon, Walmart, Microsoft and Paramount have strongly criticized the lack of control over extremist content and have since pulled their ads on X, receiving plenty of rebuke from Musk in the process.

Musk notably agreed to reinstate on X Alex Jones, the infamous right-wing extremist known for spreading hateful conspiracy theories for years about, among other things, the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre.

X also recently blamed the Media Matters group, accusing it of falsely reporting that its platform allowed racist, anti-Semitic and xenophobic content to flourish.

A spectacular storm system visible from space!

Two giant storms swept across Canada in a rare weather event and, according to The Weather Network, these systems, of unprecedented magnitude and size, also created a unique and breathtaking event as seen from space.

Satellite images captured this unique phenomenon, as the two huge low-pressure systems that formed off the coast of Canada came together, with the entire country falling under the clouds formed by these unusual weather systems.

These systems will continue to cause a range of weather phenomena in the majority of Canadian provinces and territories, bringing high winds and heavy snowfall.

And the El Niño phenomenon, which is in the middle of this climatic frenzy, will continue to influence Canadian temperatures this winter, as it brings weather disturbances and unusual frosts.

The lingering effect of El Niño could mean that western Canada will remain relatively warm, while eastern Canada could experience harsher-than-normal seasonal weather.

Trump refuses to testify in his $250M fraud trial

Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he would not return to testify in the ongoing fraud case in New York, while he and his companies face civil charges in a $250 million lawsuit brought by New York prosecutor Letitia James.

The lawsuit alleges a decade-long scheme of financial fraud and misrepresentation by the former president in the Trump Organization to obtain favorable loan terms.

Getty Images

Recall that in early November, Donald Trump testified by taking a defensive stance and sharply criticizing Attorney General Letitia James, accusing her of being a political hack, and Judge Arthur Engoron, calling the latter hostile.

The New York Attorney General said in a press release that her office had already proven that Trump had committed financial fraud for years and that he and his family had unjustly enriched themselves.

The Attorney General will continue her cross-examination in the trial, which is due to resume on Tuesday.

The trial, which began on October 2, has entered its final phase.

Final arguments will be presented to the judge on January 19.
