Zelensky is back to the White House, a 3rd visit for the ukrainian president

Joe Biden will receive Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House this week, as further crucial emergency aid measures are still hoped for in Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s campaign of aggression.

President Zelensky arrives in Washington on Monday, and his agenda is packed… and crucial to his country’s survival, as his visit aims to reaffirm the United States’ unwavering commitment to date to maintaining Ukraine’s sovereignty.

The White House stresses that the US must continue its support for Ukraine at this critical time as the conflict continues, but this assertion is increasingly challenged by some members of the US Congress.

Discussions between the two leaders are expected to focus not only on Ukraine’s immediate defense needs, but also on possible joint projects for the production of weapons and air defense systems.

In addition to his visit to the White House, Zelensky is scheduled to address a gathering of US Senators, and will meet privately with the new Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson.

How much will Rudy Giuliani have to pay at his trial?

Rudy Giuliani is back in court to find out how much he’ll have to pay after being found liable for defamation and damaging the reputations of two Georgia election officials working to count votes in Fulton County during the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

This lawsuit is linked to unfounded allegations of electoral fraud during the presidential election, repeated on numerous occasions by Rudy Giuliani and aimed specifically at these two agents, which would have led to catastrophic consequences for them.

Ruby Freeman and Wandrea Moss, a mother and daughter, sued Mr. Giuliani for falsely accusing them of being involved in a fictitious election scam, leading the two women to suffer harassment, emotional distress and threats.

Getty images

Among other things, Giuliani compared the two women to drug dealers exchanging USB drives containing illegal votes. In reality, the accusations were unfounded.

The plaintiffs in the case are seeking between $15 and $43 million for reputational damage alone. They are also seeking separate compensation for emotional distress, as well as punitive damages to deter future misconduct.

During the preliminary proceedings of his case, Rudy Giuliani had failed to present the requested documents and evidence, suffering a setback by default.

The trial is expected to last four days and will focus on compensation amounts.

Research conducted by experts at Kelownahomes.ca reveals the top 10 most desirable cities to buy a home in Canada in 2023. The list was compiled using data from the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA).

The most sought-after cities have obviously produced an increase in house prices, and it’s on the difference in these prices between September 2022 and September 2023 that the researchers based themselves to better understand which regions are currently most in demand.

In first place is Powell River, British Columbia, where house prices have risen by 40.5% in the past year.

In second place, Sherbrooke, Quebec, steals the show with a 29% increase, bringing the average house price to $515,155, $115,732 more than the previous year.

In third place, Brandon, Manitoba, saw a 24.5% increase in house prices over the past year, with an average price of $265,069, the second lowest on the list.

In fourth place, we have the lovely city of Trois-Rivières in Quebec, which saw a 21.4% increase with an average price of $353,062.

Also in fifth place is Lloydminster, Alberta, with a price increase of 17.5%. The city is also in third place for the least expensive homes on the list, with an average price of $281,849.

Finally, we can count Thunder Bay in Ontario, Kelowna in British Columbia, Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, Lethbridge in Alberta, the central region of Alberta, as well as Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia in the last positions of the list.

While these cities are clearly rising in popularity, they’re not the only ones: even the Territories, including the Northwest Territories, have experienced a 45.5% increase in house prices in the past year…

Experts worry about triple threat of respiratory viruses

As winter sets in, health experts are expressing concern that viral infections such as COVID-19, RSV and seasonal flu are having an unusually difficult season in this country.

The expected increase in viral activity comes at a time when healthcare systems are already under pressure from staff shortages and high occupancy rates.

The RSV era began in September last year and has been attributed in part to a decline in immunity in the general population due to social isolation, as well as to other COVID-19 prevention measures.

Getty Images

Admissions and deaths due to COVID-19 are low, but flu cases are on the rise, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada, and the situation in pediatric hospital emergency rooms is worrisome, particularly among children presenting with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection.

Holiday gatherings will certainly facilitate the transmission of viruses from younger family members to their elders, which is of particular concern to health professionals.

Getty Images

The convergence of influenza, COVID and RSV could trigger a viral chain reaction that could prove devastating.

At least 5 deaths linked to salmonella outbreak in the US and Canada

Cantaloupes are the source of a salmonella outbreak that has caused a serious epidemic in North America. The contaminated fruit is responsible for a large number of people becoming seriously ill, including several deaths in Canada and the United States, CBC reports.

Canadian health authorities have noted a significant increase in cases of salmonellosis in the country, recording 129 incidents, including 44 hospitalized patients and 5 deaths.

The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) in the US has recorded at least 230 cases of salmonella infections since November in 38 different states, among which 96 people were hospitalized and 3 died.

The recalls involved whole cantaloupes and pre-cut products, such as salads, chunks and platters.

Consumers are advised to discard any cantaloupe or products containing cantaloupe if they are unsure of the source.

Symptoms of salmonella infections, which generally appear between six and seventy-two hours after exposure, are severe. They include headaches, nausea, stomach cramps, fever and abdominal pain.

Most people recover without medical treatment within a week, but the illness can become more serious and potentially fatal in young children, the elderly or those with weakened immune systems.

Health authorities are urging consumers to exercise caution and follow their advice when buying and eating cantaloupe that may have been contaminated.
