NEW YORK, NEW YORK - OCTOBER 17: Former President Donald Trump speaks as the court takes a lunch break during his civil fraud trial at New York State Supreme Court on October 17, 2023 in New York City. Former President Trump may be forced to sell off his properties after Justice Arthur Engoron canceled his business certificates after ruling that he committed fraud for years while building his real estate empire after being sued by Attorney General Letitia James, who is seeking $250 million in damages. The trial will determine how much he and his companies will be penalized for the fraud. (Photo by Michael M. Santiago/Getty Images)
The news is in. Former President Donald Trump has been ordered to pay $355 million (USD) at the end of his high-profile civil trial for fraud involving him and his company, the Trump Organization, as well as his son Eric, among others.
This is a heavy sentence for Donald Trump and his businesses, since the ruling could place him in serious financial difficulties.
It is a powerful verdict for the prosecution and for those who want to see Trump and his cronies held to account like all citizens, despite his status as a former president.
The Trump clan, meanwhile, described the verdict and sentence as a serious injustice, via a spokeswoman for the Republican presidential candidate’s legal team in 2024.
The untimely death of Alexey Navalny, often described as Russia’s most ardent critic, sent shockwaves around the world and a wave of indignation. Navalny died in a Russian colony inside the Arctic Circle. According to the Russian Prison Service, he was 47 years old.
Jailed Russian opposition politician Alexey Navalny is dead, prison service says.
Prison officials said Navalny fell ill after a walk on Friday, and lost consciousness almost instantly. Navalny could not be saved despite rapid intervention by medical staff and intensive attempts at resuscitation. The authorities announced the opening of an investigation into the exact cause of death.
Mr. Navalny’s death, which was revealed just one day after he appeared in good health via video link during a court appearance, has aroused the suspicions of his supporters and observers around the world.

International reaction was swift and severe. France condemned Mr. Navalny’s death, calling it the price to be paid for resisting Russian oppression. Norway’s foreign minister held the Russian authorities responsible. White House officials and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed deep concern, describing Navalny’s death as a glaring tragedy that reflects the weakness and decadence at the heart of the system built by Mr. Putin.
Alexey Navalny had been an irritant to the Kremlin for more than a decade.
He was serving a 19-year sentence for charges that were widely dismissed as political. His bold denunciations of Putin’s alleged personal wealth evolved into a broader campaign to free Russia from Putin’s yoke, positioning him as an icon of hope for the future of democracy in Russia.

Alexey Navalny’s death comes just a month before important elections are due to be held in Russia, and there is no opposition to Mr. Putin.
In 2018, Navalny was nearly killed in a nerve agent attack linked to Russia’s FSB. After returning from Germany in 2021 and convalescing, Navalny was immediately taken into custody, with a prison sentence that his supporters see as an attempt by the Kremlin to permanently silence him.

Human rights activists express dismay at the harsh punishments meted out to Mr. Navalny, including the excessive use of solitary confinement. Even behind bars, his unwavering activism continued until his death.
It remains to be seen what the consequences of Navalny’s death will be, but this event represents a turning point for the Russian political opposition, as well as for the way in which international opinion perceives Russian politics under Vladimir Putin.
The New York State Court is preparing to begin criminal court proceedings relating to allegations of bribery in a case involving Donald Trump, with jury selection scheduled for March 25.
Donald Trump’s legal troubles are gathering momentum, and this trial is of historic significance as the first criminal prosecution of a former U.S. president.

Manhattan State Court Judge Juan Merchan denied the former president’s motion to dismiss, paving the way for this historic trial. Trump was indicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records.
The charges assert that these acts were part of an elaborate scheme to conceal extramarital affairs.
The indictment claims that Trump made payments to Michael Cohen, his former lawyer. These payments were made to silence claims by Stormy and Karen McDougal that Trump had had an affair with them. Trump vehemently rejects these allegations. According to the indictment, payments to Daniels and McDougal were disguised as legal fees, including $130,000 for Daniels.
And that’s the real problem.

Falsifying business records is considered a Class E misdemeanor in New York and carries a maximum sentence of 4 years. If Trump is found guilty, given that this case was brought by the state, he will not be allowed to pardon himself in 2024 if he wins the presidential election.
Despite these legal problems, Donald Trump remains a serious contender for the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election.
According to some of the polls, he is the favorite against President Joe Biden.
In many key states, Mr. Trump is tied with or ahead of Mr. Biden.

Judge Merchan’s decision to pursue the case comes at a time of intense activity for Mr. Trump. He claims that his opponents are trying to undermine his comeback by bringing charges against him.
From March 25, then, the jury selection process begins, while the world will closely follow the progress of this historic court case, marking a new chapter in American legal and political history.
But first, let’s see how the Trump clan fares against prosecutor Fani Willis in Georgia… but that’s another story.

She also looks back on her Hollywood career, which has been shaped both by her success and by her willingness to choose roles she’s passionate about. Citing industry leaders like Jodie Foster, she acknowledges the challenges openly gay actors have faced. The actress acknowledges that she hasn’t faced the same challenges throughout her career.
She attributes this to the niche she has created for herself, a field where storytelling is more important than commercial appeal.

Jackie Robinson transcended baseball and became a symbol of progress and equality. Robinson’s stellar career, which earned him the National League MVP award in 1949, the batting title that same season and the World Series championship in 1955, is celebrated not only at McAdams Park, but in the hearts and minds of civil rights activists and fans across the country.
The community unites to reflect the spirit of indomitable determination that Robinson represented. GoFundMe quickly mobilized to raise nearly $200,000 to replace the statue, whose story sounds like something out of an episode of The Simpsons.

Major League Baseball has offered to help build a replacement statue that could be completed by summer.
Alaska has reported its first Alaskapox-related death. This virus, which was first identified in 2015, has become a major concern. An elderly man living in a remote part of the Kenai Peninsula succumbed to the disease in January after being hospitalized since November.
State health officials said the severity of the elderly man’s illness may have been exacerbated by anti-cancer treatment and drug-induced immunosuppression, given that the disease had previously been considered mild.
Alaskan health authorities had received only six reports of Alaskapox prior to this one.
All were from Fairbanks, and all had only mild symptoms, which did not require hospitalization.
Symptoms included rashes and swollen lymph nodes, as well as joint or muscle pain. The man from the Kenai Peninsula, on the other hand, suffered serious complications that led to his death. In particular, he suffered from delayed healing and malnutrition. He also suffered from acute renal failure and respiratory insufficiency.

In the most recent case, a cat is suspected of having scratched the deceased. This led to the hypothesis that the scratches could have been a vector for spreading the virus. Despite multiple tests, the cat tested negative for Alaskapox. However, researchers want to determine whether the virus could have spread through contact with small animals in the environment, or through the pet’s activities.

Alaskapox shows no signs of human-to-human transmission, and no cases have been reported outside Alaska.
