Trump refuses to testify in his $250M fraud trial

Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he would not return to testify in the ongoing fraud case in New York, while he and his companies face civil charges in a $250 million lawsuit brought by New York prosecutor Letitia James.

The lawsuit alleges a decade-long scheme of financial fraud and misrepresentation by the former president in the Trump Organization to obtain favorable loan terms.

Recall that in early November, Donald Trump testified by taking a defensive stance and sharply criticizing Attorney General Letitia James, accusing her of being a political hack, and Judge Arthur Engoron, calling the latter hostile.

The New York Attorney General said in a press release that her office had already proven that Trump had committed financial fraud for years and that he and his family had unjustly enriched themselves.

The Attorney General will continue her cross-examination in the trial, which is due to resume on Tuesday.

The trial, which began on October 2, has entered its final phase.

Final arguments will be presented to the judge on January 19.

Zelensky is back to the White House, a 3rd visit for the ukrainian president

Joe Biden will receive Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House this week, as further crucial emergency aid measures are still hoped for in Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s campaign of aggression.

President Zelensky arrives in Washington on Monday, and his agenda is packed… and crucial to his country’s survival, as his visit aims to reaffirm the United States’ unwavering commitment to date to maintaining Ukraine’s sovereignty.

The White House stresses that the US must continue its support for Ukraine at this critical time as the conflict continues, but this assertion is increasingly challenged by some members of the US Congress.

Discussions between the two leaders are expected to focus not only on Ukraine’s immediate defense needs, but also on possible joint projects for the production of weapons and air defense systems.

How much will Rudy Giuliani have to pay at his trial?

Rudy Giuliani is back in court to find out how much he’ll have to pay after being found liable for defamation and damaging the reputations of two Georgia election officials working to count votes in Fulton County during the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

This lawsuit is linked to unfounded allegations of electoral fraud during the presidential election, repeated on numerous occasions by Rudy Giuliani and aimed specifically at these two agents, which would have led to catastrophic consequences for them.

Ruby Freeman and Wandrea Moss, a mother and daughter, sued Mr. Giuliani for falsely accusing them of being involved in a fictitious election scam, leading the two women to suffer harassment, emotional distress and threats.

Among other things, Giuliani compared the two women to drug dealers exchanging USB drives containing illegal votes. In reality, the accusations were unfounded.

The plaintiffs in the case are seeking between $15 and $43 million for reputational damage alone. They are also seeking separate compensation for emotional distress, as well as punitive damages to deter future misconduct.

During the preliminary proceedings of his case, Rudy Giuliani had failed to present the requested documents and evidence, suffering a setback by default.

The trial is expected to last four days and will focus on compensation amounts.

Mike Pence is now a witness at Trump’s Georgia trial

Former Vice President Mike Pence’s name has been added to the list of possible witnesses in the election subversion case against Donald Trump in Georgia, CNN reports.

This means that Pence could be called to testify about Trump’s alleged attempts to reverse the results of the 2020 election.

Mike Pence has been added to a list of more than 150 witnesses in the case, and the fact that he has been added to the list is a major development… and a sign that prosecutors certainly intend to use his testimony when the case goes to trial.

Pence has sharply criticized claims by Trump and his allies that election fraud was committed.

Pence had previously stated that he was prepared to appear in court as part of the federal voter fraud trial, and his testimony will be crucial due to his intimate knowledge and understanding of the Trump administration in the post-election period.

Donald Trump is charged with several offenses in connection with alleged attempts to interfere in the Georgia election. He has also been indicted along with 18 others by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis as part of a wide-ranging investigation.

Four co-defendants have already accepted plea deals in exchange for testimony and cooperation against the former president.

The fact that former allies are now potential witnesses in the case could increase the pressure on Trump’s legal team, and Pence’s testimony and the information provided by those who have agreed to plead guilty could greatly harm Trump as the case progresses.

Prosecutors have proposed the date of August 5, 2024 for this trial, which is sure to be one of the most eagerly awaited of the coming year.

Suspect wanted in the murder of kingpin Gregory Woolley

Gregory Woolley, an influential figure in organized crime in Québec, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a shopping mall on Boulevard du Séminaire in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

The 51-year-old succumbed to his injuries despite being rushed to hospital.

This was confirmed by the Sûreté du Québec, which took charge of the investigation.

Woolley’s child and girlfriend were both present at the time of the shooting, but were not the intended targets. Gregory Woolley, a notorious criminal figure, was an associate of the Hells Angels, known as the godfather of Montreal street gangs and a man capable of mediating between various criminal groups.

The SQ is still investigating the murder.

They are currently looking for the black SUV that witnesses saw speeding away from the crime scene, but also for a suspect.

Images provided by the Journal de Montréal show at least one hooded man dressed in black speeding away from the crime scene, who would currently be a person of interest, i.e. a suspect wanted by police.

The SQ is asking the public to contact them if they have any details concerning the event or, more specifically, the suspect.

Single-use plastics ban cancelled, a setback for Trudeau

A decree banning the use of certain single-use plastic objects in Canada has been invalidated by the Federal Court.

The Trudeau government had adopted the regulation in June 2022, classifying all single-use plastics as toxic substances.

However, Judge Angela Furlanetto ruled that the government had interpreted the definition of toxic substance too broadly, not relying on sufficient evidence, CTV News reports.

As a result, the Federal Court overturned the decree, making the six categories of objects previously banned legal once again.

Provincial and municipal regulations may continue to apply.

This decision is yet another environmental setback for the Trudeau government.
