Death on set: Alec Baldwin charged, prosecutors make offer to gunsmith to find out where fatal bullet came from

New developments are emerging just a few weeks before the opening of the trial of the gunsmith on the Rust movie set, when according to Variety, prosecutors on the case would have offered Hannah Gutierrez Reed a favorable sentence if she explained the reason for the presence of real gun bullets on the set.

Reed is embroiled in a lengthy legal battle, which could have far-reaching consequences for her, following the terrible accident on the set of Rust that led to the tragic death of Halyna Hutchins. Reed has pleaded not guilty to charges of manslaughter and tampering with evidence for the trial scheduled for next February.

Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the gunsmith in charge of the Rust set, is accused of negligently bringing real bullets onto the set, which would have ended up in Alec Baldwin’s gun. While he was rehearsing a scene in the film, the gun discharged and caused the cinematographer’s death, in 2021.

If convicted, Reed could face up to three years in prison.

Hannah Gutierrez Reed’s trial will take place from February 21 to March 6 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, as justice seeks to shed light on the events that led to Hutchins’ tragic death.

As for Alec Baldwin, his lawyers said they are confident that the case will be heard.

Innocence Project takes on one of America’s most high-profile murder case

The Los Angeles Innocence Project agreed to look into one of the most widely publicized murder cases in the U.S., that of Scott Peterson, NBC reports. In 2004, Peterson was convicted of the murders of his pregnant wife, Laci Peterson, and their unborn child.

Although he was initially sentenced to death, this sentence was overturned in 2020 by the California Supreme Court.

Peterson’s attorneys, members of the Los Angeles Innocence Project, an organization dedicated to exonerating the wrongfully convicted, have filed legal papers alleging violations of federal and state constitutional rights. They refer to newly discovered evidence that they think strengthens the claim of Peterson’s innocence.

In this case, which captivated America, Peterson was convicted of murdering his wife in a historic, high-profile trial. Laci Peterson, 27, was eight months pregnant when she mysteriously disappeared on Christmas Eve 2002. The bodies of Laci and her unborn child were found in San Francisco Bay several months later, in April 2003.

The Los Angeles Innocence Project pointed out that its review of the evidence presented at Peterson’s first trial highlighted the absence of several pieces of information crucial to the defense in the case files.

In particular, substantial discrepancies between the police reports and the court records used during the trial were highlighted. New information was revealed, including details of a burglary in the Petersons’ neighborhood, a van fire on the day Laci disappeared in 2002, and documents relating to interviews with key witnesses.

These elements could help determine responsibility for the tragic death of Laci and her unborn child.

Scott Peterson was denied a new trial following allegations of misconduct by a jury member during the original trial.

The decision came more than a year after the California Supreme Court instructed the Superior Court judge to consider whether the juror’s misconduct had compromised the fairness of Peterson’s trial.

Now, the Los Angeles Innocence Project aspires to shed new light on the case.

New murder charge for suspected Long Island serial killer

Rex Heuermann, 59, the suspected Long Island serial killer, was indicted on January 16 on a fourth murder charge for murders in Gilgo Beach, Long Island.

Rex Heuermann is now officially charged with the murder of Maureen Brainard Barnes, a 25-year-old mother of two who disappeared in 2007 and whose remains were found along an abandoned stretch of highway on Long Island, three years after her disappearance.

This is a new chapter in the sad story of the discovery of human remains near Gilgo Beach, in an investigation that has been going on for several years, when 4 victims, nicknamed the Gilgo Four, had been associated with the same killer profile, and the latter who had still not been arrested until Heuermann’s surprise arrest last July.

Getty Images

Investigative work by the police, aided by the latest technological advances, helped solve this case, but it was Heuermann’s DNA found on a pizza that established his involvement, since the DNA matched hair found on the victims.

Other murder victims in the area over the years could also be linked to the suspect.

Heuermann is still being held in jail without bail.

The judge has set a new hearing date of February 6 in the case as the Gilgo Beach community and the victims’ families await justice…

A sweeping victory in Iowa reignites Trump’s fanbase passions

Donald Trump’s resounding victory in the Iowa caucuses has solidified his position as favorite for the Republican Party nomination and sets the stage for a tough showdown between Biden and Trump over who will secure his place in the White House.

Iowa Republicans voted, and the former president’s loyal supporters were undeterred by the frigid weather or the controversies surrounding the former president, as he won a landslide victory.

Donald Trump was helped by a fragmented opposition, which lacked the unity and strength to mount a serious challenge. Former UN ambassador Nikki Haley and Florida governor Ron DeSantis were both vying to become Trump’s main challenger, but neither came out on top, with the disappointing result that DeSantis narrowly edged out Nikki Haley to take second place.

Donald Trump’s supporters in the Republican Party don’t seem at all swayed by the many criminal charges against him; instead, they’re consumed by their worries about the economy, immigration and signal their extreme distrust of Democrats.

The primary is still far from over and it remains to be seen whether his opponents will be able to regain control, but the current momentum within the Republican Party should push Trump, once again, towards the Republican nomination.

Quaker issues massive recall in North America

PepsiCo subsidiary Quaker Oats Company has voluntarily recalled nearly 80 different varieties of its cereals and cereal bars in North America.

The recall, which affects all US states and Canada, follows widespread concerns about possible salmonella contamination, which can cause serious health problems for consumers.

Quaker products affected by the recall are Harvest Crunch Granola, Cap’n Crunch Treat Bars and Quaker Simply Granola Oats. The list also includes snack packs that combine Quaker Chewy bars with Frito-Lay or other chips.

On Quaker’s official website, we find a list of affected products and images enabling consumers to easily identify them for disposal. It should be noted that Quaker has also set up a hotline for consumers to obtain information or a refund during the week, as well as a website providing detailed information on the recalls.

As yet, neither Quaker Oats Company nor its Canadian counterpart has received any confirmed reports of illness linked to the recalled cereal bars or granola products.

Salmonella can be particularly dangerous and fatal for children under five, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.

This recall follows an outbreak of salmonellosis linked to whole, pre-cut cantaloupes that tragically led to the deaths of people in the United States and Canada.

The FDA is therefore reminding consumers that contaminated foods may look okay, but they can still be harmful to your health. It’s best not to eat them, as a precaution.

Amazon cuts 35% of its entertainment workforce and launches ads on Prime

Amazon’s entertainment divisions have been sharply scaled back as several hundred employees at Prime Video, Amazon’s MGM Studios and its Twitch streaming platform have been laid off, reducing the company’s workforce by 35%, Deadline reports.

Mike Hopkins, head of entertainment at Amazon, told employees that the layoffs were the result of tough decisions made to align investments with customer interests and long-term business success.

This redundancy announcement joins the many other employees who have lost their jobs at the company in recent months, with Amazon announcing 9,000 job cuts last March, following a previous round of redundancies that reduced its workforce by more than 27,000 employees since Amazon’s hiring boom in the wake of the pandemic.

Amazon’s decision to lay off employees follows broader economic challenges that have forced companies to rethink their structure, and this situation affects not only the company’s employees, but also Amazon Prime Video subscribers!

Amazon Prime Video subscribers will see a change in service on January 29, as ads will be introduced to the Standard package. An additional monthly fee of $2.99 will be charged to those who wish to continue enjoying an ad-free experience.

Amazon has said that Prime Video and Twitch employees who leave the company benefit from a severance package that includes transitional benefits and help finding another job.

Yes, global temperatures reached an all-time high

The Earth continues to warm, and 2023 has been confirmed as the hottest year in history. This is a worrying milestone for the climate crisis. Indeed, the average temperature in 2023 was 14.98 degrees Celsius, 0.17 degrees above the record set in 2016.

Felt on every continent

In 2023, the heat was felt on all continents and in all ocean basins. The seas were also affected by the heat wave, recording the highest temperatures ever recorded. Scientists fear that these high temperatures could lead to an increase in hurricanes and tropical storms, as Reuters reports.

Scientists have been shocked not only by the heat of the past year, but also by the speed with which new records have been broken. This trend is the result of human-induced effects on climate change, and is exacerbated by climatic variations such as El Nino.

Getty Images

It’s been so hot that by 2023, the planet’s average temperature was 1 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels every day. This is an absolute record. This rise in temperature has already had a major impact on the world. In 2023, forest fires in Canada, Hawaii and southern Europe destroyed landscapes and livelihoods.

In addition, the use of fossil fuels continues to release greenhouse gases, which are the main cause of the sharp rise in global temperatures. Some critics are therefore calling for stronger action to slow the pace of global warming.

Faced with the current status quo and last year’s record highs, climate scientists are calling for immediate and decisive action to decarbonize our economy and strengthen our adaptation strategies.

Bomb threat to judge’s home in Trump civil trial

Just hours before closing arguments in Donald Trump’s civil fraud trial, Judge Engoron, who presides over the trial, was the victim of a bomb threat at his home.

Nassau County police quickly investigated the incident and determined that the call was unfounded.

Getty Images

The trial will go ahead on schedule despite this worrying event, but security has been tightened around Judge Engoron. The prosecution and defense will deliver their final arguments in front of the courtroom, whose security has also been reinforced.

The former president, who had indicated his intention to participate directly in his defense’s closing arguments, had his request denied by Judge Engoron as Trump refused to obey certain rules, including refraining from criticizing New York Attorney General Letitia James or her team and avoiding turning his closing arguments into a campaign speech.

Getty Images

But this incident intensifies the already palpable tension surrounding Trump’s many legal proceedings, since Judge Engoron isn’t the first to have a link to various Trump court cases and fall victim to this kind of maneuvering.

Judge Engoron is expected to render his decision by the end of the month.
