Coach Keefe provides an update on Ryan O’Reilly

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ryan O’Reilly it the ice today for the first time in two weeks, after suffering a broken finger just eight games into his stint with his new team.

The problem is… O’Reilly didn’t join his team for a regular practice, rather he was just shooting pucks by himself ahead of the team’s regularly scheduled practice.

While this is encouraging news, it appears that O’Reilly still isn’t close to returning and likely won’t be available for head coach Sheldon Keefe this week. Keefe told reporters today that it’s “unlikely” O’Reilly suits up this week.

Next week?

Stay tuned.

Michael Bunting sounds off on heated bench exchange with Sheldon Keefe

The Toronto Maple Leafs were on the winning side of things on Sunday night, taking down the Nashville Predators by a 3-2 final score at Bridgestone Arena in Music City.

But during the course of the game, cameras captured forward Michael Bunting getting a stern talking-to on the bench from head coach Sheldon Keefe. As you may know, Bunting is one of the most intense players in hockey, and has often let his temper get the better of him.

For this of you who may have missed the exchange, take a look below:

When asked about the substance of the conversation earlier today, Bunting declined to get into specifics, instead pointing to the fact that he and the Leafs head coach have a good relationship and that Keefe was part of the reason why Bunting wanted to play for his hometown team.

“I’ll leave that between Keefer and I but what I will say is we have a good relationship,” Bunting explained. “We’ve known each other for a long time. There’s not much to really see there; he’s one of the reasons I signed here. I’ll leave it at that.”

Bunting and the Leafs are back in action tomorrow on home ice at Scotiabank Arena in downtown Toronto when they host the Atlantic Division rival Florida Panthers, whom are scratching and clawing (no pun intended) for one of the final two Wild Card playoff spots in a tightly packed Eastern Conference. Game time is set for 7:30 PM EST.

It sounds like Jonathan Toews is planning to retire this offseason

With Jonathan Toews on the IR the past month and a half and with Patrick Kane traded to the New York Rangers, the Chicago Blackhawks recently played their first game in 16 years without at least one of the two franchise icons in the lineup.

Indeed, it’s the end of an era in Chicago and it’s apparent to everyone around the NHL. Except to Toews himself, it appears.

Toews returned to practice with his team today after spending the past six weeks on the IR and for the first time since the NHL’s trade deadline, he made a public comment on the Patrick Kane trade. Incredibly, Toews says he was “shocked” by the trade, despite the fact that it was rumored for literally months beforehand.

I’ll agree that Kane looks good in a Ranger uniform, but the same could be said for his Blackhawks uniform too. The fact is that the NHL’s original six teams have the best look in game, but I digress…

I’m honestly not sure I can buy what Toews is selling here. There’s no way that he was truly “shocked” when Kane was traded. We all knew it was going to happen. You’d have to be delusional or simply disingenuous to believe otherwise. Again, it’s the end of an era in Chicago and with free agency looming for the 34 year old Toews, you have to imagine that he’ll ride off into the sunset this offseason to officially end the “Kane & Toews” era for the Blackhawks.

Toews was asked about potentially retiring as a Blackhawk this summer and, honestly, he gave a pretty insightful answer:

“Regardless of what happens in the future this summer, it’s definitely on my mind that this could be my last few weeks here in Chicago as a Blackhawk.”

– Jonathan Toews

More from the captain:

Honestly, who would blame Toews if he walked away from the game this summer?

He’s a three time Stanley Cup champion, a two time Olympic gold medalist and one of the most respected players of his generation. His body is failing him and he has nothing to prove to anyone in the hockey world. Take a bow, Jonny… you’ve done well.

Jack Edwards trending online again after another unhinged showing

In case you missed it this past weekend, longtime Boston Bruins broadcaster Jack Edwards was trending online after some very interesting calls during the Bruins’ 4-3 OT win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

First up, Edwards was called, “high as hell” for this absolutely unhinged call that evoked scenes from The Joker:

And then there was this interesting interpretation of the Bruins’ win:

Yeesh…

You remember to wear your Bruins undies to the game there, Jack?

Well buckle up because old Jack is trending online again this evening due mostly to some lazy pronunciation and, honestly, some kind of slurred speech. Many Bruins fans have posted online wondering openly if Edwards is impaired.

I mean, just check it out:

Unfortunately I don’t think that explains things… I think this is just the way that Edwards is when he’s 100% sober.

NCAA star Mitchell Gibson leaves college early, signs an NHL deal

This just in, according to a report from NHL insider Frank Seravalli the Washington Capitals have signed NCAA star Mitchell Gibson to a one year entry-level contract that begins in 2023-24. He will officially sign an amateur tryout (ATO) contract with the Capitals’ AHL affiliate Hershey Bears later this week.

The 23 year old Gibson has had a stellar college career with Harvard and looks ready for the pro game. If he can establish himself as a solid option with the Bears over the next couple months, he could be an intriguing option for the Caps in goal next season. The Caps have Darcy Kuemper and Charlie Lindgren both signed next season and beyond but have little support behind the two veterans. Again, don’t be surprised if Gibson establishes himself as a solid #3 or even #2 option for the Caps in 2023-24.

Bruins and Predators honor Covenant School shooting victims

Like most people I was absolutely shocked and horrified to see the news yesterday of yet another mass shooting in the United States.

This time, six people were killed including three children in a horrible, senseless tragedy at The Covenant School in the outskirts of Nashville, Tennessee. While this isn’t a political website nor a breaking news outlet, it’s fair to say that these types of mass shootings are occurring far too frequently, which is to say that they shouldn’t occur at all, and that because of that we’re seeing crossover into the sporting world. Athletes from each of North America’s major professional sports leagues have made definitive statements on the lack of gun control in the United States and the frequency of these murders. Still, gun control in America is a hot button topic and I don’t blame NHL teams for shying away from offering up anything more than ‘thoughts and prayers’ in these types of situations.

Enter: The Nashville Predators.

Look, I don’t feel like the Predators should have to feel like they need to make a political statement on this mass murder. The NHL team has nothing to do with this psycho murdered and they have no responsibility to make any kind of statement either way. BUT… I do think they have made an appropriate gesture by donning special helmet decals this evening to honor the victims of The Covenant School shooting.

Check it out:

Could they do more? Sure. But they’re a god damn hockey team, not a political organization.

Kudos to the Preds for lending their emotional support during a difficult time for everyone in Nashville right now.

Sheldon Keefe addresses yelling at Michael Bunting

By now, you’ve heard about the minor incident on the Leafs bench during Sunday’s 3-2 victory the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena. The Leafs head coach tapped forward Michael Bunting on the shoulder and barked orders at him, while Bunting didn’t appear overly interested in hearing what Keefe had to say.

However, Bunting has declined to comment exactly on what Keefe was saying, and said that there’s no issue with their relationship that is several years old.

“I’ll leave that between Keefer and I. But what I will say is, Keefer and I have a good relationship. We’ve known each other for a very long time. And, yeah, there’s not really much to see there,” Bunting said. “He’s one of the reasons I came to Toronto, so, yeah, we’ll leave it at that.

“He knows, obviously, how to coach me and knows how I am and what kind of player I am. So, I wouldn’t really look much into that. And, yeah, just another day.”

And now, Keefe is telling his side of things. Based on his comments, there isn’t any underlying issue that Leafs fans should be concerned about going into the postseason.

“Bunts and I do have a relationship that goes far beyond here. But that’s not anything I focus on and think about. It’s a non-issue for me,” Keefe said of their interaction.

“I give players a lot of leeway and a pass essentially, especially for those that come right off the ice. For me to expect a player coming right from the heat of the battle to sit on the bench and be a true gentleman when I want to go talk to him, I’m putting myself at risk in going into that situation. A non-issue for me. I think he got the message. I know that he hears me.”

It sounds as though there’s no cause for alarm in Leafs land with this particular situation.

Newly-signed Carter Mazur has message for Red Wings fans

The Detroit Red Wings selected Jackson, Mich. native 70th overall in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. He grew up watching the Red Wings and even penned an essay as a youngster in school stating that his life goal was to one day suit up in the NHL wearing the Winged Wheel.

And now, that dream is one step closer to becoming a reality. Earlier today, the Red Wings signed Mazur to a three year entry level contract, and he’ll be reporting to the American Hockey League affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins for the remainder of this season on an amateur tryout basis.

Soon after the deal was announced, Mazur took to social media with this special message that included a picture of his essay he wrote years ago:

In 40 games played this season with the University of Denver, Mazur tallied a total of 22 goals and 15 assists along with a +19 plus/minus rating.

Mazur also played in his youth for the Little Caesars AAA hockey team, and also practiced at both Joe Louis Arena and the Belfor Training Center inside Little Caesars Arena, Detroit’s practice rink.

Alex Ovechkin caught in online controversy!

Chatter remains loud around Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin and his support of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s unjust war against Ukraine. Earlier this season, there were even reports that the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) had made an official appeal to the Canadian government to have Ovechkin banned from the country. In particular, the UCC asked the federal government in December to deny Ovechkin entry into Canada prior to the Capitals’ game against the Maple Leafs in Toronto.

Ovi remains focused on chasing Wayne Gretzky’s record, but on Tuesday, it was revealed that his page on MoneyPuck now redirects to an article titled: “What to do about a problem called Alex Ovechkin: A look at the NHLer’s close ties to [President RUS].” and a donation page for Ukraine.

Not sure if Ovechkin is aware of the controversial stance from MoneyPuck online, but he probably hasn’t help his case as he never criticized the Russian government for the invasion of Ukraine and for years he has kept a photo of himself with Putin as the profile picture on his Instagram account.

Hockey fans and North Americans, in general, paid little attention to Ovechkin’s relationship with Putin until Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Knowing that he is a popular search, Money Puck went a step further to criticize the player and link him to a controversy.

Now things like this Money Puck page redirect is catching attention and Ovechkin is caught once again in the controversy.
Last year, MoneyPuck made their feelings clear about Ovechkin and his support of Putin.

It was a matter of time before they went at it again, this time, trying to support people of Ukraine.

Classy move by Kevin Hayes to rival Canadien ahead of the Flyers’ game!

Flyers’ Kevin Hayes knows how important the NHL debut is, and on Tuesday, Montreal Canadiens’ Sean Farrell was lacing up his skates for the first time in the big league in Philadelphia. Hayes went the extra mile to encourage the young forward with a very classy move, sending him a signed hockey stick, which read:

“To Sean, congrats on making the NHL. Here’s to a lot more games!”

The two players grew up just 40 miles apart in Massachusetts. Hayes put the rivalry aside to welcome a young player in the league, and you have to admit, this is just pure class.

Well done, Hayes!
