Amazon Luna now available on the Samsung Gaming Hub in Canada

The Samsung Gaming Hub now supports Amazon Luna in Canada, one month after the game streaming service launched here.

Available on 2021-2023 Samsung smart TV models, the Samsung Gaming Hub combines game services from multiple companies, including Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now. With this latest update, Canadians can stream games from Amazon’s Luna service directly from their Samsung TVs.

To access Luna, you’ll need Amazon’s proprietary Luna controller or a compatible USB 2.0 and Bluetooth controller.

However, you’ll need a subscription to actually play games on Luna:

  • Luna+ ($12.99/month with a 7-day trial) — includes dozens of games from various publishers, such as Devil May Cry 5, Resident Evil 2, Sonic Colors Ultimate and Yakuza Kiwami
  • Ubisoft+ Multi-Access ($22.99/month) — dozens of games from Ubisoft’s catalogue, including Far Cry 6, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Beyond Good & Evil and Watch Dogs: Legion
  • Jackbox Games ($6.49/month) — includes every Jackbox party game (Quiplash, Trivia Murder Party, Drawful and more)

Alternatively, Prime members get a few different Luna games each month. For April, that includes Yakuza Kiwami 2, The Jackbox Games Party Pack 3, Horizon Chase Turbo and The Adventure Pals.

YouTube introducing new policies related to eating disorder content

Popular video-sharing platform YouTube has announced it’s cracking down on content that relates to eating disorders. As part of this, the site will prohibit content that features behaviours such as purging after eating or extreme calorie counting.

Although YouTube has always removed content that encourages or glorifies eating disorders, this new addition to the Community Guidelines is an effort to prevent “in-risk” viewers from imitating harmful content uploaded to the site.

The videos that feature harmful content related to eating disorders will not be fully removed from the platform but will require users to log into YouTube, and only those who are 18 years of age or older can access the videos. The policy changes were created in consultation with the National Eating Disorder Association as well as other non-profit organizations.

The new policy changes come in the wake of backlash towards platforms like YouTube and Instagram from certain lawmakers. In 2021, the site was called out for promoting accounts featuring content depicting extreme weight loss and dieting to young users.

This isn’t the first time YouTube has updated its policies to address specific issues, with the platform recently rolling out several updates for how it handles medical topics such as vaccines and abortions.

In addition to flagging videos, YouTube will add panels with information on crisis resources under eating disorder-related content in nine countries with more to come.

To better educate creators, if an account’s video goes against the new policy, YouTube will provide resources on how to create less harmful content.

The video-sharing company plans to roll out the new changes globally in the coming weeks and will use both automated and human moderators to analyze videos on the platform.

Sonic the Hedgehog returns to Lego in new revealed sets

With Nintendo classics like the NES and the Game Boy having been recreated in toy brick form in the past, Sega is now getting in on the fun with a new collection of Sonic the Hedgehog Lego sets having been revealed.

Although this isn’t the first time Sonic the Hedgehog has appeared in Lego form, it is the first time that Sega’s flagship character will be featured in a Lego set that isn’t exclusively designed to be a collector’s piece. The four new sets revealed are more play-focused with one featuring a launcher that sends Sonic through his iconic inverted loop.

Sets include Sonic’s Speed Sphere Challenge, Amy’s Animal Rescue Island and Tail’s Worksop and Tornado Plane.

Adding to the charm, the company has also introduced Minifigure versions of other characters in the Sonic universe such as Tails, Amy and Doctor Eggman.

The new Sonic the Hedgehog-themed Lego sets will begin shipping on August 1st, 2023, and will range in price from $35 to $50 USD (approximately $47 to $67 CAD).

Microsoft rumoured to be developing a smaller Surface Pro

Microsoft is reportedly working on developing a smaller Surface Pro that would feature an 11-inch display as well as a Surface Go 4 model that would be powered by an Arm processor.

As reported by Windows Central, the smaller Surface Pro is codenamed ‘Luxor’ and would have a similar shape and size to the Surface Go, a budget-friendly 10.5-inch tablet.

The tech giant currently only has a 13-inch screen for its Surface Pro 9, regardless of whether it’s an Intel or an Arm-powered model. The rumoured 11-inch model would allegedly include a 120Hz display, the same as the 13-inch.

The gossip didn’t stop at the Surface Pro, with talk circulating about an Arm-powered Surface Go 4 model. The model has been codenamed ‘Tanta’ and is said to ship with a chip based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7c. The Qualcomm-powered model may be the first time we see the Surface Go line feature 5G support.

Window’s Central is claiming that these new models are unlikely to ship before the Fall of 2023, making early 2024 a more accurate prediction for their premiere. Microsoft and Intel are also both hinting at a new Windows 12 operating system, making both companies’ near future something to keep an eye on.

Pixel Fold reportedly has ‘most durable hinge on a foldable’

With Google I/O around the corner, Pixel leaks are coming from all over. The latest comes from CNBC, of all places, confirming previous leaks about the Pixel Fold’s launch and price. The publication also reports the Pixel Fold will have the “most durable hinge on a foldable.”

CNBC cites internal communications it viewed as the source of the information. Per the communications, CNBC reports that Google will announce the Fold at I/O 2023 on May 10th. Moreover, the Fold will cost “upwards” of $1,700 USD, putting it in competition with Samsung’s $1,799 USD Galaxy Z Fold 4. (In Canada, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 starts at $2,269.99).

The publication goes on to detail some of the specifications of the Pixel Fold. The foldable reportedly has water resistance, a 5.8-inch external screen and will open like a book to reveal a 7.6-inch display, same as the Z Fold 4. The Pixel Fold will weigh 10oz (about 283.5g) and will have a larger battery than the Z Fold 4 that Google says will last 24 hours.

The Pixel Fold reportedly runs on Google’s Tensor G2 chip like the company’s 2022 flagships.

Another interesting tidbit in the CNBC report is that Google plans to offer incentives to draw people to the Pixel Fold. This will include trade-in options to swap from a current Pixel, iPhone, or other Android phone and get a discount on the Fold. Even more alluring is that Google will reportedly offer a free Pixel Watch to Fold buyers. Of course, it’s worth keeping in mind that Google often has different (and better) trade-in offers in the U.S.

Upcoming Pixel Tablet dock shows up in Amazon listing

A listing for the upcoming Pixel Tablet’s dock was briefly available on Amazon.

The user posted the Pixel Tablet Standalone Charging Dock in ‘Hazel’  for $129 USD (roughly $173 CAD). Before the link was taken down, the description read, “the unique Pixel Tablet Charging Speaker Dock keeps your tablet charged and ready 24/7; and it’s easy to dock and undock.”

Other information from the listing includes the model number, product dimensions (‎6.65 x 3.71 x 2.77 inches,) and weight of 14.2oz (roughly 402g).

Google first announced that it was working on the Pixel Tablet last year in May. It was showcased alongside a unique charging speaker dock and given a 2023 release window.

With Google I/O 2023 just around the corner, many expect the company to officially unveil the new tablet and dock during the conference.

It remains unclear whether the tablet will include the dock in the box or if it will be made available only as a separate purchase.

Google I/O takes place on May 10th, where we’re expecting to see the Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet and Pixel 7a. Recent leaks indicate the Pixel Tablet will launch with Tensor G2, Android 13, with 8GB of RAM.

Snapchat rolls out My AI for all users, details subscriber growth, at annual Snap Partner Summit

Snapchat users across the globe can now use artificial intelligence to fuel conversations with their friends. The company says My AI is available to all users for free.

Developed using OpenAI’s ChatGPT, users can activate the chatbot in conversations by mentioning @MyAI in chats.

The company originally started testing the feature with subscribers in the U.S. in February. CEO Evan Spiegel says 99.5 percent of the responses the chatbot produces conform to the company’s community guidelines. “My AI certainly makes plenty of mistakes, so you can’t rely on it for advice, but it’s definitely entertaining,” Spiegel said during the company’s annual summit.

More than 750 million people across 20 countries use Snapchat every month. Its subscription service, Snapchat+, has more than three million subscribers, marking a period of growth. Back in August, only one million users were using the service.

Othe new features

Snap wants its users to have small blasts from the past with its new Friendship Flashbacks feature. This will allow the platform to resurface saved snaps in conversations, similar to the way Google Photos reminds users of photos from years ago.

“At Snap, we know that Friendships are based on shared experiences, and we’re always looking for ways to help our community celebrate the people closest to them,” Jack Brody, vice president of product, said.

The company will also introduce a new shared Story type called After Dark. It will allow users to add snaps to the Story after 8pm. Only those who posted the night before can access the Story the next morning. A feature “for the early birds” will also be making its way to the app soon, Brody said but didn’t provide further details.

Starting today, users can also access Live Location — a feature that will allow friends to track each other on Snapchat. “This makes it easy to see each other when you’re both on the go,” Brody said.

Hyundai Canada fined $360,000 for safety defect notification delay

According to Transport Canada, Hyundai Auto Canada Corp has pleaded guilty to six counts of criminal charges for violating the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, via Reuters.

The company failed to send out notices of safety defects within the prescribed time period of 60 days, and as a result, Hyundai Auto Canada will pay a fine of $360,000.

The safety defect in question affected nearly 300,000 vehicles and was a part of the recalls issued by Hyundai in 2020 and 2021. “Some of these recalls were safety risks related to possible vehicle fires, reduced braking performance and sudden loss of engine power,” wrote Reuters. The report does not mention specific vehicle recalls.

“It is alarming that Hyundai failed to notify vehicle owners of a recall in a timely manner on six different occasions,” transport minister Omar Alghabra said.

In a statement, Hyundai Canada said that it knows that it was not meeting precise timing requirements identified in the applicable regulations in a limited number of instances during the COVID-19 pandemic. “However, we immediately corrected the issue and accepted responsibility,” the company said.
