Fitbit users won’t lose data during Google account migration

Google acquired Fitbit in 2021, though it wasn’t until 2022 that the company started using the ‘Fitbit by Google’ branding.

Up until now, users could only sign into their Fitbit account with their Fitbit credentials. Now, as shared by The Verge, existing Fitbit users would be able to start logging in using their Google account this summer, whereas those without a Fitbit account will be required to sign in with a Google account when setting up a new device.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise. Back in September 2022, Fitbit’s support website shared details of switching to Google accounts on Fitbit. “After we launch Google accounts on Fitbit in 2023, some uses of Fitbit will require a Google account, including to sign up for Fitbit or activate newly released Fitbit devices and features,” the website read at the time.

At the time, Google also said that those who already have a Fitbit account would be able to log in with it until some time in 2025. After that, Fitbit users will be required to use a Google account.

Google says that migrating from a Fitbit account to a Google account won’t result in loss of historical wellness and health data.

Telus makes $85 base plan BYOP-only, drops other plans by $5/mo

Vancouver-based telecom company Telus rolled out new changes to its plans, dropping $5 off the monthly price of some options and restricting its base $85/mo plan to bring-your-own-phone (BYOP) customers.

Per updates to the Telus website MobileSyrup spotted on April 11th, the company now only offers its ‘Unlimited 25 5G’ plan for customers who bring their own devices. A description on the $85 plan notes that customers can “enjoy 5G speeds with unlimited data, talk and texts” when they bring their phone.

Previously the $85/mo plan was available to customers who wanted to get a phone from Telus through the company’s device financing program. Aside from the BYOP restriction, it appears nothing else has changed with the plan (including the 250Mbps speed cap).

Along with the BYOP restriction, Telus dropped the monthly price of its 50GB and 100GB 5G+ plans from $95 and $105 to $90 and $100, respectively. Aside from the price reduction, it appears nothing else changed with the $90/50GB plan, though Telus does now note that customers can “get a phone or bring [their] own device to enjoy this plan.”

The $100/100GB plan, however, changed more significantly. Along with the price drop, the plan lost its unlimited Canada-U.S. calling, texting and data capabilities. Those features have moved to a new $110/mo CAN-US plan with 100GB of data.

Telus’ plans over $90/mo all offer up to 1Gbps data speeds. You can check out the changes on the company’s website.

Google Bard gets update page detailing new changes and additions

Google’s experimental Bard conversational AI chat service got a new updates page to let people know what’s new.

Available at ‘bard.google.com/updates,’ the page details “experiment update[s]” to Bard. Currently, the page only shows the inaugural update from April 10th, 2023, which includes three additions, descriptions of the changes and ‘why’ sections.

The April 10th update adds the experiment updates page (duh). Google says it added the page so “people will have an easy place to see the latest Bard updates for them to test and provide feedback.”

Along with that, the update added additional suggested Search topics when people click the ‘Google it’ button – Google says this will help people explore a wider range of interests and related topics.

Finally, Google says it boosted Bard’s capabilities in math and logic because “Bard doesn’t always get it right.” The company says it’s working toward higher-quality responses in those areas.

Though the information is somewhat vague, it’s good to see Google doing more to communicate updates and changes to Bard. Having transparency on what’s new (and why Google chose to do something) is a big win for Bard users and AI in general.

The new update page comes after Google promised to improve Bard following a lacklustre launch.

Rogers open to working with service providers to offer full TTC cell services

Rogers says it’s open to working with other providers, including Telus and Bell, to offer Toronto residents full cell coverage on the TTC.

The telecom giant has plans to acquire BAI’s Canadian venture in the next two weeks. BAI owns the rights to TTC’s wireless network and previously offered telecom companies the option to join the network. Freedom Mobile, previously owned under the once-independent Shaw, was the only carrier to sign on.

“We’re planning to initiate discussions with other providers to participate. As we build out the network, we will work with other providers to bring them on board,” a Rogers spokesperson told MobileSyrup. At the time of writing, the spokesperson confirmed the carrier hasn’t entered into any such conversations.

Bell called the move “troubling,” saying the TTC simply replaced “one gatekeeper with another” without due process.

“Giving the contract to Rogers without any open bid process is surprising, especially given how TTC customers were so poorly served by BAI for so many years,” a Bell spokesperson told MobileSyrup. “The City needs to show some leadership and mandate immediate access for all carriers so that all TTC customers can be served by the carrier of their choice right away.”

Rogers has plans to bring its 5G network throughout the subway system in the next two years. Upgrades to its 3G and 4G system are also needed, and customers won’t be able to access services underground as soon as Rogers completes BAI’s acquisition. That will take around nine months, pending upgrades to the existing network.

Service is only available in 25 percent of the tunnels, specifically on line one, between Sheppard West and Vaughan Metropolitan Centre stations, and the “downtown U.”

“With regards to Freedom, the agreement with BAI remains in place, and Freedom customers will continue to have the same access they do today,” Rogers said.

Bryson Masse, regulatory and communications advisor at the Competitive Network Operators of Canada (CNOC), says Rogers’ role as one of the big three means it faces regulations from the CRTC and ISED, and it has different responsibilities compared to the BAI.

“The regulation on Rogers is a whole lot stronger than the regulation that covered BAI beforehand, and so that means these deals are going to come in at least some fashion,” Masse told MobileSyrup.

“There wasn’t a limit to how much BAI could charge the incumbents, and that was the major issue. Now since there’s the regulatory backstop…[I] imagine they’re going to be able to come to a deal.”

But Masse says it’s hard to ignore the long-term impact such an acquisition will have. While Masse agrees the move will “result in the network being way more usable,” it also impacts Canada’s competitive landscape.

“This underscores the need for regulatory intervention… to make sure that these giant companies just don’t buy up everybody.”

Ontario looks to reduce energy costs for customers using more electricity with a new price plan

The Ontario Government has announced it’s launching a new ultra-low overnight price plan in an effort to lower electricity costs for consumers.

On May 1st, 2023, customers of different electricity providers from around the province will have the ability to opt-in to the new price plan with all utilities required to offer it to customers within six months. The new plan is ideal for customers that use more electricity at night.

Customers of the following distributors can access the new plan on May 1st:

  • Toronto Hydro
  • London Hydro
  • Centre Wellington Hydro
  • Hearst Power
  • Renfrew Hydro
  • Wasaga Distribution
  • Sioux Lookout Hydro

This newly announced pricing structure is one of three available for electricity customers alongside the existing Time-of-Use and Tiered plans. Customers that find themselves using more electricity at night, whether it be for electric vehicles (EVs) or those who electrically heat their homes, could save up to $90 per year shifting demand to the ultra-low overnight plan when province-wide electricity demand is lower.

“Our government has put families back in control of their energy bills, and the new Ultra-Low Overnight price plan will give families and small businesses who use more electricity overnight more ways to save,” said Todd Smith, Minister of Energy, in a recent press release.

As for specifics, the new rate set by the Ontario Energy Board will be set at 2.4 cents per kilowatt-hour, 67 percent lower than the current off-peak rate. This comes in exchange for a higher on-peak rate.

Ontario continuing to excess clean electricity overnight is one of the reasons that this new price plan is able to be delivered.

David Piccini is the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks for the Government of Ontario. He said the more options for smart electricity, the better for Ontarians and the environment.

“By making better use of the province’s clean grid, our government is taking further action to keep electricity affordable in Ontario,” Piccini said.

The full details of the new ultra-low overnight price plan can be found in the Government of Ontario’s press release here.

Hackers use spyware-infected calendar invites to target iPhones

In March, we wrote about a former Meta security policy manager being hacked and monitored by the Greek national intelligence service for an entire year using commercially available spyware known as “Predator.”

Now, a new report shared by TechCrunch indicates that hackers are using spyware-infested calendar invites to hack the iPhones of journalists, political opposition figures, and an NGO worker.

According to the report, Microsoft and Citizen Lab, a digital research unit with the University of Toronto, analyzed samples of the malware, and it was reportedly created by an Israeli spyware maker called QuaDream.

QuaDream has been know to create ‘zero-click exploits,’ which means, spyware that doesn’t require the potential victim to click on a malicious link, or download something.

According to Israeli newspaper Haaretz (via TechCrunch), QuaDream had sold some of its spyware to Saudi Arabia in 2021, while a Reuters report indicated that QuaDream sold an exploit that could be used to hack into iPhones.

Both Microsoft and Citizen Lab published reports regarding the malware. The exploit was developed for iOS 14 and at the time, was unknown to Apple, making it a so-called zero-day. The malware allows recording of phone calls, recording of audio using a phone’s microphone, taking pictures, stealing files and tracking the person’s location.

According to Citizen Lab, the iPhone exploit was delivered through malicious calendar invites that were dated in the past. Bill Marczak, a senior researcher at Citizen Lab, told TechCrunch that the infected calendar invite didn’t trigger an invite, so it would largely go unnoticed.

Researchers from Citizen Lab said that although hard to detect, the malware does leave subtle traces that allowed them to track QuaDream’s spyware. Citizen Lab did not reveal the traces.

Learn more about the spyware and how Citizen Lab detected it here.

Pixel Watch April 2023 update arrives with ‘security patches’

Following up on the late April patch for Pixel phones, Google is now rolling out a Pixel Watch update for April 2023.

Those excited about a big update will be disappointed, however. Google’s patch notes for the Pixel Watch April 2023 update is just one sentence: “The April 2023 software update includes the latest security patches for Pixel Watch users.”

That’s really not much to go on, but it’s also not a total surprise. After all, the March 2023 update for the Pixel Watch brought several improvements, including the long-awaited fall detection, support for mono audio, colour correction features, improved touchscreen sensitivity and more.

The update sports build number ‘RWDA.230114.010.G2’ and is available now, though, as usual, it will roll out in stages. In other words, if you don’t see the update on your Pixel Watch right away, don’t fret (not that you’re missing out on much).

To download the update, head to Settings > System > System updates on your Pixel Watch. Supposedly if you repeatedly tap the ‘Your watch is up to date’ screen, it will force the update, but I’ve never been able to get this work, so your mileage may vary.

Ford’s Oakville, Ontario plant to undergo EV transformation in 2024

Ford is investing $1.8 billion to turn its Oakville, Ontario facility into an electric vehicle manufacturing plant.

The plant will be renamed Oakville Electric Vehicle Complex, and the modernization process will take place in the second quarter of 2024, the company said in a press release. Production will begin in 2025.

The transformation includes creating a 407,000-square-foot on-site battery plant that will use cells and arrays from BlueOval SK Battery Park. It will stand in addition to the three body shops, one paint building and one assembly building the 487-acre Oakville site already has.

“It will be a modern, super-efficient, vertically integrated site for battery and vehicle assembly,” Jim Farley, Ford’s president and CEO, said. “I’m most excited for the world to see the incredible next-generation electric and fully digitally connected vehicles produced in Oakville.”

The transformation will help the company produce 2 million EVs every year by the end of 2026.

Nintendo asks Discord to reveal The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom leaker

Nintendo is looking to identify the person responsible for leaking The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom‘s artbook.

As first reported by TorrentFreak, the Japanese gaming giant is trying to subpoena Discord, the instant messaging platform to which images of the yet-to-be-released artbook were published. The artbook is included with the Tears of the Kingdom collector’s edition, which is set to launch on May 12th alongside the game. In February, a leaker shared images from the artbook on Discord that they claimed were sent by a friend, and these were later posted to Reddit and other platforms.

“NOA [Nintendo of America] is requesting the attached proposed subpoena that would order Discord Inc. (“Discord”) to disclose the identity, including the name(s), address(es), telephone number(s), and e-mail addresses(es) of the user Julien#2743, who is responsible for posting infringing content that appeared at the following Discord channel Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” reads Nintendo’s application for a subpoena.

It remains to be seen how Discord will respond, but in any case, it makes sense that Nintendo would be so protective of what’s sure to be its biggest game of the year. 2017’s Breath of the Wild, the predecessor to Tears of the Kingdom, has sold around 30 million copies across Switch and Wii U, making it the fourth best-selling Switch game. Meanwhile, Nintendo has been quite secretive about the game, with the few trailers we’ve seen having been primarily focused on gameplay.

All will be revealed soon, though, as the game will be officially released on May 12th after a few delays. Unlike most Switch games, though, it will be priced at $89 CAD.

In other Tears of the Kingdom news, MobileSyrup is currently running a contest with Nintendo of Canada to send you and a friend to the Nintendo New York launch of the game. More details can be found here.
