Keanu Reeves set to star in Apple exclusive ‘Outcome,’ directed by Jonah Hill

Apple Original Films has picked up ‘Outcome,’ the dark comedy set to be directed by Jonah Hill, who co-wrote the project alongside Ezra Woods.

Actor Keanu Reeves, who is known for starring in hit movie series such as The Matrix and John Wick is in negotiations to star in the film alongside Hill, adding to the high-list talent set to take the stage.

Reeves will play Reef, “a damaged Hollywood star who must dive into the dark depths of his past to confront his demons and make amends after he is extorted with a mysterious video clip from his past,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Hill finds himself in good company production-wise with the help of his partner Matt Dines and the company’s Ali Goodwin.

‘Outcome’ landing as an Apple Studios production marks an impressive run from Hill, who is also working with the company on a Grateful Dead biopic alongside the legendary Martin Scorsese. The biopic will see Hill produce and star while Scorsese directs alongside his film company, Sikelia Productions.

The deal also comes at a big time for Keanu Reeves, who is coming off starring in John Wick: Chapter 4, which opened to a franchise-best $73.5 million at the domestic box office.

Bill Gates thinks pausing AI development isn’t a viable option

A recent open letter penned by Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and several other notable AI researchers addressed AI labs globally, attempting to pause Giant AI experiments, quoting profound risks to society and humanity.

Bill Gates, however, wasn’t on the list of signatories, and now he’s speaking out against those trying to pause AI development.

As reported by Reuters, Gates believes that pausing the development of AI won’t “solve the challenges” that lie ahead, and pausing development on a global scale will be difficult. Instead, we should focus on how to best use the developments in AI. “I don’t think asking one particular group to pause solves the challenges,” said Gates. “Clearly there’s huge benefits to these things… what we need to do is identify the tricky areas.”

Gates, who is now a full-time philanthropist with his ex-wife Melinda Gates, has been a vocal supporter of AI and its potential to solve some of the world’s biggest problems. In a blog post dated March 21, a day before the open letter, he wrote that AI could help reduce inequalities in health, education and agriculture. He also alluded to AI being as revolutionary as the internet in the 1990s.

Gates said he was optimistic about the future of AI and that he believed humans could control it. He said he did not think AI would make itself smarter without human input, as some have feared.

Gates’ Microsoft has also long been a supporter of OpenAI, and its investment is a clear indication that he believes in the importance of AI in the future of technology.

Join the craze and learn how to make your own Barbie poster

If you haven’t heard by now, the infamous Barbie toys are slated for another movie release in July of this year.

The film by Warner Bros. Pictures will contain a star-studded cast featuring the likes of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu and Michael Cera among others. As you could expect, the upcoming movie is being met with tons of hype, with one of the teaser trailers gaining over 6.3 million views on YouTube in just over one day.

To help market the film (as if it needed any help to begin with,) the Twitter page @BarbieTheMovie is showing users online to create their own Barbie (or Ken) poster.

Users can follow the link to the Barbie selfie generator page and use the step-by-step instructions to include themselves in the viral marketing campaign. It’s as simple as uploading a photo, framing it to your liking, choosing a colour and voila… you are now a part of the (virtual) Barbie universe.

Google permanently moves away from its old Now Launcher

If you remember Google’s line of Nexus phones that helped the company break into the smartphone scene back in the early 2010s, then you probably be aware of the Google Now Launcher.

Debuting in 2013 with the Google Nexus 5, the software was capable of suggesting applicable information to users much like Google Assistant does now. Now, a decade after its introduction, Google has decided to shut it down for good.

After digging through the latest beta of the Google app, a message to users was uncovered with a warning that the Google Now Launcher will be shutting down by the end of April, 9to5Google.

According to the message, if no changes are made by the user, the phone will be reverted to its default launcher by itself.

The last phones to run the Google Now Launcher were the Nexus 5x and 6P. Five years ago was the last time that Google issued a security update to those devices, signalling the end of Google Now in favour of other software.

Now, it looks like Google is finishing what it started in 2018, with the Google Now Launcher set to be shut down for good by the end of April.

Android apps will need to let users delete their accounts and data

Soon, Android apps that let you make an account will also have to let you delete the account and its data from both the app and website.

According to a blog post on the Android Developers Blog (via Engadget), Google hopes to create “a more intuitive experience” and ” better educate our shared users on the data controls available to them.”

Along with providing the option to delete your account and data, developers will need to wipe data for an account when users request the account be deleted. And the web requirements are intended to help ensure users don’t need to reinstall an app just to delete their account.

The policy won’t come into effect right away, though. According to the blog, developers will have until December 7th to answer questions about data deletion in apps’ safety forms, and Play Store listing will start showing the changes in early 2024. Developers can also file for an extension until May 31st, 2023.

It’s worth noting Apple made a similar change with the App Store a couple of months ago.

The move to require account and data deletion is part of a wider concern about privacy violations and, as Engadget notes, perhaps a response to growing regulatory efforts in the U.S. to give consumers control over accounts and services (though that might focus more on subscriptions).

YouTuber got ChatGPT to generate free Windows product keys

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is able to generate free product keys for a Windows operating system (OS), first shared by Gizmodo.

The OS in question is Windows 95, which, as the name suggests, was released in 1995.

When asking the chatbot to simply “generate a valid Windows 95 key,” ChatGPT said that it couldn’t do so, and activation keys must be purchased from the software vendor. However, YouTuber Enderman knew that Windows 95 keys use parameters like a set of ordinal numbers and other randomized numerals.

By asking ChatGPT to generate a random string of 20 characters with the specific parameters, Enderman was able to essentially force ChatGPT to generate a Windows 95 product key. The prompt could generate a working key in every 30 attempts.

Enderman didn’t ask ChatGPT to generate a Windows key, and instead, produced a sequence of characters that satisfied all the criteria of a Windows key.

According to Gizmodo, Enderman ran the prompt on both, OpenAI’s older GPT-3 language model and the newer GPT-4 model. The newer model was able to generate more keys than GPT-3.

“I believe it’s a good thing, and companies like Microsoft shouldn’t ban users for abusing their Bing AI or nerf its capabilities,” said Enderman. “Instead, they should reward active users for finding such exploits and selectively mitigate them. It’s all part of AI training, after all.”

Koodo offering some customers $45/30GB deal

Some lucky Koodo customers received an offer of $45/mo for 30GB.

According to a thread on RedFlagDeals (RFD) spotted by iPhone in Canada, Koodo texted customers with two offers: $40/mo for 6GB or $45/mo for 30GB. One of the deals is a clear winner, especially when you consider the Koodo website currently lists a $45/mo 6GB promo plan.

As with most things like this, your mileage may vary. If you weren’t lucky enough to get the text, you probably wouldn’t be able to get the $45/30GB plan.

Koodo message offering $45/30GB plan | Image credit: RFD user Seagull21

For those that do get the message, it seems there’s a time limit on the offer. The RFD user who posted their message has until May 3rd, 2023, to claim the offer — it’s not clear if the same debate will apply to all or if it will vary based on when customers receive the message.

To claim the offer, customers can reply “MORE” or head to Koodo’s Self Serve site and check their available offers.

As far as deals go, $45/30GB is pretty good. It’s not quite at Black Friday levels ($45/50GB), but it’s a lot better than the $65/30GB deal that Koodo just ended.

Canada’s new wireless player uses blockchain technology, and it wants locals to help run its network

Some Canadians will soon be able to access a new wireless network option with costs starting at $9/month.

Karrier One’s decentralized network uses blockchain technology to connect to 5G or 4G LTE networks, depending on availability.

The network is user-owned and lets Canadians act as Mobile Independent Network Operators (MINOs). Operators will create hotspots to spread connectivity across Canada through the use of Gateways (professional radio equipment and nodes) purchased from the company. Operators will receive utility tokens depending on how often their hotspots are used, which will reduce their wireless costs. Crypto-tokens will be one way the company pays its operators.

Through the use of blockchain technology and its decentralized nature, “outages will be a thing of the past,” the company said in a press release. Iristel CEO, Samer Bishay, is serving as Karrier One’s CEO. “Our goal is to decentralize wireless infrastructure and democratize mobile network access by creating a new type of telecommunications layer,” he said.

Karrier One says its services will lead to lower costs for Canadians, as it’s not working as traditional service providers.

“As blockchain expands throughout the telecom world, wireless customers, particularly those in Canada, should experience better services at lower prices as blockchain technology breaks down monopoly barriers and unjustified higher premiums currently made possible in Canada by a lack of competition,” Bishay, the company’s co-founder, said.

The $9/month plan is the only option available on Karrier One’s website. It offers 250MB of roaming data and nationwide coverage through the use of an e-SIM.

The service will only be available in certain communities at this time, but the company says it will build out its network in phases over the next three years, with plans to expand into the U.S. and Kenya as well.

Parties interested in serving as an operator can reserve their spot on the company’s website through a $140 deposit.

PlayStation is working on a new handheld, but it’s not the Vita 2: report

Sony is developing a new PlayStation handheld that will offer Remote Play functionality with the PlayStation 5, according to a report from the often-reliable Insider Gaming.

For the uninitiated, Remote Play is a long-running PlayStation feature that allows consoles to connect with handhelds and mobile devices. Per Insider Gaming, the new device — codenamed the Q Lite — won’t be a dedicated handheld, but will instead be a PS5 peripheral that requires a constant internet connection. VentureBeat‘s Jeff Grubb, another reliable industry insider, also tweeted that he’s heard about a PlayStation cloud-streaming handheld.

In terms of design, Insider Gaming says the Q Lite is expected to resemble a PS5 DualSense controller, but with an added 8-inch LCD touchscreen at the centre that supports 1080p and 60fps. It will also sport adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, two of the DualSense’s signature features, as well as a headphone jack and speakers.

Interestingly, the PS5 already supports Remote Play to mobile devices through a free app, so PlayStation may just want to appeal to that audience by offering a dedicated ‘Q Lite’ accessory of its own, rather than solely letting people use smartphones and other devices that they already own. The Q Lite would also expand on PlayStation’s partnership Backbone to deliver a mobile-focused controller.

PlayStation going the PS5 accessory route for a new handheld would also be a more understandably cautious approach for the company after its last portable gaming device, the Vita, was a failure. While Sony didn’t reveal official sales figures, estimates peg the now-discontinued system at around 16 million units as of 2018, a massive drop from the 80-plus million units sold by its predecessor, the PlayStation Portable.

When it launched in 2011, the Vita was sold on the promise of being able to take console-quality games like Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Killzone: Mercenary on the go. However, a variety of factors — namely, poor first-party support, expensive memory cards and strong competition from the likes of the Nintendo 3DS and mobile games — led the Vita to struggle immensely during its lifecycle.

At this point, other devices have successfully capitalized on that “high-quality portable gaming” promise. Most notably, there’s the Nintendo Switch, a console-handheld hybrid that’s already become the third best-selling console of all time at over 120 million units sold. And more recently, beefier products like the Steam Deck have taken a similar approach to PC games. Therefore, the Vita brand doesn’t seem to have a place in the modern market, even as some fans call for a successor.

Ultimately, it remains to be seen if and when PlayStation goes through with Q Lite. Insider Gaming also didn’t indicate other key details, such as pricing and release timing. However, the outlet says it’s believed to be part of PlayStation’s “second phase” of the PS5, which includes a rumoured PS5 Pro that’s targeting a holiday 2024 launch.
