The future of Mario games on mobile remains unclear

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has opened up about Nintendo’s approach to bringing the iconic Italian plumber to mobile.

During a broader discussion with Variety about The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the legendary game designer was asked about Nintendo’s mobile aspirations for Mario. In response, Miyamoto said, mobile “will not be the primary path of future Mario games.”

On the one hand, that’s pretty obvious considering Nintendo has a major hardware business and games like Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are some of its best-sellers. It’s also in line with what Nintendo has been doing.

In terms of a traditional Mario platformer, the company has only released Super Mario Run on mobile, which debuted on iOS in 2016 and Android in 2017 to fairly positive reviews. However, the game’s premium monetization model made it far less successful than other Nintendo mobile games, particularly the free-to-play Fire Emblem Heroes, which has made over $1 billion USD (about $1.3 billion CAD).

That said, Mario did find more success on the mobile front with Mario Kart Tour, a free-to-play racer that has grossed over $300 million USD (about $403.6 million CAD). A third Mario mobile game, Dr. Mario World, was released in 2019 and shuttered just two years later after reportedly only earning around $14 million USD (about $18.9 million CAD) in that time.

On the whole, Nintendo has largely seemed to move away from mobile games, with the company only putting out the relatively low-key Pikmin Bloom in the past two years.

Elsewhere in the interview, Miyamoto elaborated on both the difficulties and rewards of pursuing Mario on mobile. On the one hand, he said it was “challenging” to translate the platforming action to a touchscreen, but he also noted how mobile “expands the doorway for far more audience to experience the game.”

That said, he called Super Mario Odyssey “the ultimate evolution of a Mario adventure game on a typical 3D platformer,” suggesting an interest in pursuing more along that style of game. “We try to define what is the gameplay, what is the method, and then define what devices we go on,” he said of Nintendo’s process when beginning development on a new Mario.

Ultimately, he didn’t formally shut the door on future Mario mobile games, but he didn’t suggest any more were coming, either. Instead, he said, “please stay tuned for future Nintendo Directs” when asked when we could expect the next mainline Mario game. While we did get new 3D Mario action in the Bowser’s Fury expansion included with 2021’s Super Mario 3D World port, the last fully brand-new mainline Mario was 2017’s Super Mario Odyssey. Therefore, it seems like we’re due for a new entry sooner rather than later.

For now, though, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is finally playing in theatres.

Kobo’s Eclipsa 2E allows you to write directly on it

Kobo is thrusting itself back into the spotlight with the unveiling of the new Kobo Elipsa 2E set to release on April 19th.

Capitalizing on the popularity of the new Kindle Scribe, the Elipsa 2E comes with an upgraded stylus allowing the user to write directly on the pages of e-books and documents.

The company is touting the new e-reader as a fresh digital reading and writing experience that is “designed for readers who want to engage with their eBooks and expand on their ideas like never before.”

It appears to be a slight upgrade from Kobo’s previous offering, the Kobo Elipsa. Both devices offer 10.3-inch displays that are glare-free as well as 32GB of storage, among other features such as Bluetooth support.

Where the 2E looks to stand out is in the finer details. Whether it be the upgraded stylus, its rechargeability or improvements made to searching the built-in notebook, the Elipsa looks to simply do everything that it did right with the first Elipsa model.

All of this comes back to the company’s goal of allowing its customers to read, write and ideate all in one device.

The upcoming Elpisa 2E goes a step further and features an extended battery life that, according to Kobo, “should last weeks.” There is also an effort being made to increase the eco-friendliness of the e-reader, much like the previous model – the Kobo Clara 2E.

This includes the new e-reader being made with over 85 percent recycled plastic.

The Elipsa 2E is set to retail for $399.99 U.S. (approximately $538 CAD.)

Pre-orders for the Kobo Elipsa 2E will start on April 5th. As an added bonus, those who pre-order the device in the US, UK, Canada, or Australia will receive a $25 Kobo e-gift card.

Canada’s Privacy Commissioner investigating ChatGPT

The popular AI chatbot ChatGPT is facing a new round of scrutiny, and this time it’s coming from Canada’s privacy watchdog.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada says it has launched an investigation into the company that runs ChatGPT, OpenAI, following a complaint alleging the company is collecting and using personal information without user consent.

“AI technology and its effects on privacy is a priority for my Office,” Philippe Dufresne, Canada’s Privacy Commissioner, said in a press release. “We need to keep up with — and stay ahead of — fast-moving technological advances, and that is one of my key focus areas as Commissioner.”

Sam Altman currently serves as OpenAI’s CEO, but a number of players are responsible for its founding, including Elon Musk.

This isn’t the first time the company has faced pushback from government organizations. Italy recently outright banned ChatGPT.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 alleged colour variants leak online

Even though we’re months away from the expected release of Samsung’s upcoming foldables, the colours for the Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 have leaked online.

According to Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, the Z Fold 5 will come in three colours, and the Flip 5 will sport four colour variants.

The leak indicates that the Z Flip 5 will launch in beige, gray, light green and light pink, and the Fold 5 will come in beige, black and light blue. Young says they’ll have different names — for instance, black will likely be called ‘Phantom Black,’ if history indicates.

Samsung will also have some ‘Samsung Experience’ exclusive colours and bespoke versions that allow you to mix and match.

Going off previous years, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 will likely launch this August. Previous Z Fold 5 news indicates that the device will be thinner and lighter than its Z Fold 4 predecessor. And the Z Flip 5 will have a larger Cover Screen than its predecessor.

Facebook Messenger introduces multiplayer games during video calls

Facebook is taking another crack at Messenger-enabled games after announcing a new feature that allows users to play multiplayer games within Messenger video calls.

Because let’s be honest, what’s better than a little friendly smack talk in real-time?

The new gaming feature is available on iOS, Android and the web and does not require any specialized installations. It features 14 titles at launch, including Words With Friends, Mini Golf FRVR and Exploding Kittens. All you need to play is one other person, but some games allow for more players to join in on the fun.

The company is taking all the necessary steps to ensure that these games run as smoothly as possible on Messenger. This includes a custom user interface and leaderboards making classic titles feel unique and exciting.

But how do you play? Simply start a video call on Messenger, tap group mode, tap the “play” button and pick the game of your choice.

Users will be happy to know that Facebook Gaming says more free games are slated to release later this year, although dropping 14 titles at launch isn’t too shabby.

After parent company Meta dismantled the standalone Facebook Gaming App in October 2022, it looks like the company is taking another shot at implementing gaming into some of its more popular apps.

Interested developers can contact Facebook’s Partner Manager for more details on how to add games to the platform.

Samsung looking to visually improve its watches with the upcoming Galaxy Watch 6

The Samsung Galaxy Watch series is notorious for both its beauty and quality, but why stop improving?

There’s speculation that the upcoming Galaxy Watch 6 will see some serious visual improvements, including a larger display and slimmer bezels.

According to the well-known Samsung leaker Ice Universe, Samsung is rumoured to increase the Galaxy Watch 6’s dial to 1.47 inches while improving its resolution.

The South Korean tech giant is known for following trends towards increasing screen sizes, more notably with its phone line. Both the Galaxy S8 and S8+ did something similar to what Samsung is now looking to do with its watches – size up and slim down.

Samsung looks to be considering taking a page out of Apple’s playbook, with the Apple Watch Series 7 line shrinking its bezels by 40 percent. They also increased the watch’s display size by 20 percent, setting the bar high for the ideal smartwatch appearance.

Some are having mixed reviews about the alleged decision to focus on visual improvements, with reports of a larger screen with higher resolution potentially affecting the Galaxy Watch 6’s battery life.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 is expected to be officially revealed this coming August. In the meantime, Ice Universe provided a comparison showing what the difference in bezel size might look like.

The tweet has since been deleted.

iOS 17 reportedly dropping support for iPhone X, 8, first-gen iPad Pro and more

There are a ton of rumours swirling about what’s coming in Apple’s next big iPhone update, iOS 17. While there might be lots of exciting new features in store, not all iPhones are set to get them.

iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 will drop support for the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, iPhone X, first-gen iPad Pro (both the 9.7- and 12.9-inch models) and fifth-gen iPad. MacRumors reported the information, citing a “source with a proven track record,” @Fame_G_Monster. Unfortunately, @Fame_G_Monster’s tweets are protected, and only approved followers can view them.

If the information is accurate, it seems that iOS 17 will drop support for most devices running on the A11 Bionic chip or older. MacRumors notes the only exceptions would be the sixth- and seventh-gen iPad models sporting the A10 Fusion chip and the second-gen iPad Pro models running the A10X Fusion chip.

It’s possible this is related to a bootrom security vulnerability plaguing the A5 through A11 chips. MacRumors says Apple can’t patch the vulnerability, which has allowed devices running on those chips to be jailbroken on a variety of iOS versions.

We’ll likely learn more about iOS 17 and which devices it will support at Apple’s upcoming WWDC event, which starts June 5th.

Nothing follows through with April Fools’ beer gag

‘Nothing’ is producing its very own beer, and yes, you read that right.

Although many chalked the initial claims up to be nothing more than a gag for April Fools, Nothing has decided to take the bit to the next level and commence production of its custom-made craft beer.

The company even took to Twitter to promote the upcoming beer.

Labelled as “Beer 5.1%,” the brew is described as an unfiltered rice lager with subtle notes of pear. Its store page is touting that only five ingredients are present in the beverage (water, rice, malted barley, hops & yeast… if you were curious.)

Made in a collaboration with Freetime Beer Co., an independent microbrewery from Wales, U.K., those interested in staying up to date on information surrounding the beer can even sign up to receive updates.

In one of the most curious instances of a company’s product expansion, Nothing does manage to link its brand to the beer surprisingly well by advertising the beer can with its minimalist design.

The can appears to be clear silver all around, with ‘beer (5.1%)’ vertically gracing the side.

Although no release date has been announced, Nothing expects its fans to be cracking open cans of Beer 5.1% by summer 2023.
