A first-generation iPhone could be yours for just $60,000

A U.S.-based auction house is selling a factory-sealed first-generation iPhone, and it’s expected to sell for upwards of $60,00o USD (roughly $81,000 CAD).

Steve Jobs unveiled the small touchscreen device in January 2007. Customers who purchased the phone received it in a black box covered in plastic.

But this box also contains something extra: a little red sticker with the phrase “lucky you” printed next to the apple logo. According to AppleInsider, the sticker may have been part of the holiday season when the first-gen device was sold.

The box measures in at 14 × 9 × 7cm and contains the model A1203 device. An accompanying x-ray from the Wright auction house confirms the device is inside the box, alongside other essentials Apple once included.

Apple is reportedly working on an OLED MacBook Air

Apple is reportedly considering adding OLED displays to its MacBook Air lineup, according to a recent report from Korean tech website The Elec This would be a major shift for the MacBook Air, as none of Apple’s MacBook laptops feature OLED panels. All current MacBooks, including the Pro and Air models, feature a Liquid Retina displays based on LCD technology.

According to the publication, LG Display is currently developing OLED panels for Apple’s 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro tablets, but it does not have the capacity to develop OLED panels that could be used in a laptop screen. As a replacement, Apple has reportedly turned to Samsung to produce OLED panels for its MacBook Air.

There is no release date yet for the OLED MacBook Air, according to The Elec. It’s also unclear whether the OLED MacBook Air will even be released or if it’s just a test for Samsung’s production capabilities.

Other notable industry analysts have also said that Apple is working on an OLED MacBook. For example, display analyst Ross Young said that Apple would release an OLED display sometime in 2024, and the rumour was backed-up by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

OLED panels would allow Apple’s laptops to be thinner, lighter, and have better battery life. OLED displays also permit “more diverse form factor design options,” according to Kuo.

Apple’s MacBooks are already known for their superb displays, and the addition of OLED tech could take them to the next level. It remains to be seen when or if Apple will launch an OLED MacBook Air, but with multiple reports indicating that the company is exploring the technology, it seems likely that we’ll see OLED displays on Apple’s laptops sooner rather than later.

‘It’s really sad for Canada:’ Vidéotron finalizes Freedom purchase after government approval

Ottawa’s approval of Rogers’ $26-billion Shaw takeover has left Anthony Lacavera surprised.

The Chairman of Globalive and founder of Wind (which became Freedom Mobile after a sale to Shaw) said the merger received mountains of opposition from various parties and organizations. “It’s a complete disaster for Canadians and for Canada,” Lacavera told MobileSyrup.

The approval means Québecor subsidiary Vidéotron is now a national wireless company through Freedom Mobile with customers in Ontario, Alberta, and B.C.

Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne has subjected Rogers and Vidéotron to 21 different conditions focusing on affordability and the accessibility of wireless services.

But the Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC) says these conditions are “smoke and mirrors.”

“We do not believe the conditions obtained by the Minister can counteract the anti-competitive effects of this merger on Canadians, and will lead to another decade of high wireless prices for Canadians,” John Lawford, PIAC’s executive director, said in a press release.

The details on the specifics of the agreement are sparse. One condition Vidéotron has promised is to offer plans that are 20 percent cheaper than major players. However, without the specifics, it’s unclear how the Minister would enforce this.

“These things are impossible to track and enforce,” Lacavera said. “There are all kinds of ways that the big players have historically and will now going forward get around these types of undertakings.”

The Liberal government started this week off by providing Canadians with a little bit of hope surrounding the telecom sector through affordability measures in the federal budget. Coupled with Champagne’s opposition to roaming fees, the government painted a short-lived picture of affordability.

“It’s a massive betrayal that’s only made worse coming from a government that has long-promised improved telecom affordability,” Laura Tribe, the executive director of OpenMedia, said.

“Despite press releases claiming otherwise, Minister Champagne’s putting the nail in the coffin of competition in telecommunications in Canada.”

Tony Staffieri, Roger’s president and CEO, said the company is pleased with the decision. “Building on a shared legacy with Shaw, we will invest substantially to bring more choice, more value, and more connectivity to Canadians across the country,” he said in a press release.

Netflix wants to make fewer original movies to increase quality

Netflix has made headlines recently due to getting rid of its password sharing. Now, the company also wants to make less original content. According to Bloombergthe streaming giant wants to restructure its movie division and move from releasing movies weekly to releasing fewer overall.

The report indicates that Netflix will combine its small project team, which has a budget of $30 million or less, and its mid-budget films team, which has a $30 to $80 million budget. This restructuring will result in a “handful” of layoffs. The specific number of layoffs wasn’t mentioned. Still, layoffs will include two notable execs, Lisa Nishimura, who has overseen documentaries like Tiger King and other small films, and the VP for film, Ian Birke.

It’s unclear if Netflix’s big budget division has been affected by its restructuring. Reportedly, Netflix film chief Scott Stuber reduced the number of movies the company is releasing in 2023 so that the company can make better quality movies.

Last year the company cut 300 jobs but also stated that it’s adding 1,500 jobs by the end of 2023. Strangely, the company will be cutting more again, though.

In early 2023, Disney announced that it would lay off 7,000 employees. Additionally, Amazon plans on laying off 10,000 employees.

Netflix’s Basic with Ads tier now works on Apple TV

Netflix launched its new cheaper ‘Basic with Ads’ subscription tier back in November 2022 and the streamer is finally bringing it to the tvOS app.

TechCrunch spotted a post from Redditor u/websgeisti, who noted that Basic with Ads was now working on their Apple TV. Specifically, it started working following an update to version 2.3.0 of the Netflix tvOS app. Moreover, Netflix confirmed to TechCrunch that the tvOS app now supports Basic with Ads.

Before the update, subscribers on the Basic with Ads tier would be asked to try a different device or upgrade their subscription when trying to use the service on Apple TV.

While it’s good to see Basic with Ads available on Apple TV, there are still platforms that don’t have support. Notably, some of Google’s Chromecast devices, as well as the Netflix app on PS3 and Windows.

Netflix had a rocky few months. After launching the ad tier, the company beat new subscriber expectations in its Q4 2022 report, though it’s not clear how much the Basic with Ads tier impacted that. The company went on to launch new paid password-sharing rules in Canada, sparking backlash and calls from Canadians to cancel.

However, 46 percent of respondents to a MobileSyrup survey about the new rules said they were still sharing passwords. Seven percent reported they had been kicked off someone else’s account and 43 percent said they switched to another service.

Earlier this month, Netflix started emailing former customers trying to lure them back. Instead of offering a deal or discount, though, the streamer tried to use nostalgia and its new Basic with Ads plan.

And if you did cancel Netflix, well, here are some alternate streaming platforms to check out — most of them support Apple TV too.

Google’s Bard AI falls short of rivals, Pichai promises upgrades to come soon

Recent criticism about Google’s Bard sharing non-factual information and rumours around the use of ChatGPT to train Bard surfacing aren’t painting a good picture for Google, and CEO Sundar Pichai is now in damage control mode.

Pichai has promised that upgrades to Bard are coming in the near future, as stated in an interview on The New York Times’ Hard Fork podcast, (via The Verge). “Pretty soon, perhaps as this

| Open Player in New Window

goes live, we will be upgrading Bard to some of our more capable PaLM models, which will bring more capabilities; be it in reasoning, coding, it can answer maths questions better. So you will see progress over the course of next week,” he said.

PaLM is a more recent language model that is larger in scale than Bard’s current LaMDA model, and is more capable when dealing with tasks like common-sense reasoning and coding problems

Pichai acknowledged that the way Bard is now, it is failing to match the performance of rivals such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Bing chatbot, which runs on OpenAI’s GPT-4. He also discussed concerns regarding the fast pace of development in AI models, and the threat it can pose to society.

He also acknowledged the concerns raised in an open letter signed by Elon Musk and top AI researchers calling for a six-month pause on the development of AI systems.

Despite the hurdles, Pichai remains committed to advancing AI capabilities. He emphasized the importance of anticipating and evolving to meet the challenges that AI will present, and understands that these systems are likely to become very capable, regardless of whether they reach the level of artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Pixel 7 on sale for as low as $3/mo at Big Three

The Big Three carriers all have Google’s excellent Pixel 7 on sale, though just how good the deal is varies from carrier to carrier. You’ll also need to agree to return the phone after two years.

Telus currently has the best offer, with the Pixel 7 coming in at $0 upfront and $3/mo financing, as long as you sign up for the company’s ‘Bring-It-Back’ program. Even with Bring-It-Back, it’s not a bad deal — $3/mo for 24 months works out to $72 total you’re paying to effectively rent the Pixel 7, and if you decide you want to keep it, you’re on the hook for the $160 Bring-It-Back amount. In other words, $232 total for a Pixel 7. Not bad.

Moreover, Telus has a deal on the Pixel 6a for $1.63/mo financing with Bring-It-Back, but honestly, I’m not sure it’s worth it compared to the Pixel 7 offer. That said, if you’re dead-set on getting the Pixel 6a from a carrier, Telus is better than the $10/mo financing you’d pay at Rogers or Bell.

Speaking of Rogers and Bell, they also have discounts on the Pixel 7, but the prices aren’t quite as good as Telus. Rogers is closest at $3.63/mo financing with Upfront Edge. Bell, on the other hand, charges $5.96/mo financing with its ‘Device Return Option.’

While Telus is clearly the best option, all three have a better deal than buying the phone outright from Google, even with the company’s current $200 discount bringing the price down to $599. It’s worth noting this Google deal has been going on for a bit — learn more here.
