Get one month of free service with latest Lucky Mobile flash sale

Bell’s Lucky Mobile launched a flash sale offering one month of free service for customers who buy online.

The offer runs until April 3rd, 2023 and is available online and at select retail stores, though Lucky says that does not include Dollarama, The Source, Easyhome or Circle K, which have their own bonus offer.

The free month of service will be applied as a credit on the customer’s third month of service, which means you need to stay with Lucky for two months before you get the deal.

Along with the free month of service, customers who buy their Lucky SIM card online can get it for 50 percent off.

Lucky offered a similar deal for St. Patrick’s Day earlier this year.

TTC violence highlights the need for reliable subway carrier coverage

Violence on the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) has experienced a notable uptick in recent months. Since 2019, violent incidents against TTC riders have increased by nearly 60 percent, according to a recent report from the TTC’s CEO Rick Leary.

The question many are posing now is why the big three Canadian telecommunication providers don’t offer reliable cell service on the subway for emergency situations (via The Toronto Star).

This comes soon after a 16-year-old was killed in a reportedly unprovoked stabbing on Saturday, March 25th, becoming the fourth person to be killed on the TTC since last April.

Many Torontonians have grown increasingly wary when travelling on the TTC, especially those that rely on public transport to get around the city.

It’s worth noting that if you’re a Freedom Mobile customer, you already have service on the TTC thanks to an agreement the carrier signed with BAI Communications back in 2017, which has built and exclusively owned the service’s infrastructure for 20 years. However, if you use Rogers, Bell or Telus, you won’t have service while underground. Why the three carrier giants haven’t signed an agreement to use BAI’s network is unclear.

The TTC has increased police presence and outreach workers to combat violence on the transit system, but some Toronto city councillors see adding cellphone service as an obvious part of the public safety solution.

For an in-depth look into the need for reliable cell coverage in the TTC, check out The Toronto Star‘s report.

Xbox patent outlines gamepad with Wii U-like built-in touchscreen

A recently filed Xbox patent outlines a gamepad that allows players to save custom loadouts that can then be accessed via a touchscreen built into the controller.

According to the patent, the display can also track the player’s in-game performance and be used to access various social media features (likely posting clips of gameplay and other photos). Other potential features include audio settings, charge level and more. The patent also mentions that the hypothetical gamepad is compatible with smartphones through a mobile app.

In a sense, the gamepad sort of seems like a pared-down version of the Wii U’s GamePad or, if you’re old like me, the Dreamcast’s Visual Memory Card (VMU), only its display is designed to show very specific information. It’s worth noting that Game Rant strangely doesn’t link back to the patent link in its coverage and I wasn’t able to find it myself. However, the image looks legitimate and likely exists in a patent database somewhere.

Earlier this week, Microsoft revealed ‘Red’ and ‘Blue’ Elite Series 2 gamepad Core colours, and a few months ago, the tech giant released a custom version of the Elite Series 2 controller.

As is the case with all patents, it’s important to point out that it’s unclear if this gamepad will actually be released. That said, the Elite Series 2 was released back in 2019, so a new version of Microsoft’s high-end gamepad could be in the works — especially considering the build issues the Series 2 has experienced (though the custom version of the gamepad seems to solve most of them).

Where to pre-order Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom OLED Nintendo Switch in Canada

Earlier this week, Nintendo held a special video presentation dedicated entirely to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

In it, we saw 10 minutes of open-world gameplay footage from The Breath of the Wild sequel, including a look at some of Link’s new powers. However, the stream ended with the reveal of a few new Tears of the Kingdom-themed products: a special edition Nintendo Switch OLED model ($469.99), Pro controller ($99.99) and Switch carrying case ($32.99).

The Switch OLED releases April 28th while the controller and case launch on May 12th alongside Tears of the Kingdom. We’ve also added the $174.99 collector’s edition, which went up for pre-order last month and quickly sold out everywhere, and the $21.99 Tears of the Kingdom Link amiibo where applicable.

Here’s where you can pre-order them in Canada.

Note: as with many special edition items, pre-orders have sold out quickly as they’ve become available at various retailers. Therefore, you’ll likely want to bookmark these pages and even follow some of the retailers’ social media handles for updates. We’ll also update should any additional retailers become available.

It’s worth noting that the Walmart Canada Gaming Twitter account will notify you when stock is replenished on the console.

Finally, it’s important to note that Tears of the Kingdom itself will be priced at $89 in Canada, $10 more than other Switch games. “We determine the suggested retail price for any Nintendo product on a case-by-case basis,” a Nintendo of Canada spokesperson told MobileSyrup.

Google details new search features to help users verify information

Google has detailed new ways for users to find out where information is coming from in search.

A new blog post from the company unveils several features that will help users fact-check results or verify the authenticity of the information.

The first new addition is called ‘About this result’ and aims to help acquaint users with information sources. The feature was first introduced in 2021 and is moving from beta to stable release in search across all platforms.

Users can access About this result by clicking/tapping the three-dot icon next to a search result. About this result offers a short description of the website along with quick links to additional information about things like privacy settings and explainers for how Google search works.

Another change Google is making the ‘About this page’ section easier to access by placing it higher in search results. The section includes a website’s description of itself alongside reviews and other mentions of the website.

Google is also launching a feature called ‘Perspectives’ that aims to highlight multiple perspectives on a topic from various reputable sources, though it’s going to be U.S.-only when it debuts.

Finally, Google plans to add content advisories for results the company has low confidence in. This can apply to emerging topics, such as searchers for news about a recent natural disaster, as well as for topics that are obscure.

You can learn more about these new search changes here.

Bell reportedly ignored customer’s requests to repair fallen equipment for months

A rightfully frustrated homeowner has taken to Reddit to express their dissatisfaction with Bell Canada.

According to U/legit4u on Reddit, a Bell cable box, which one Redditor claimed was a ‘CSP,’ has been left in their driveway for six months, right next to the pole it is supposed to be attached to. Despite filing 10+ tickets with the company, the box remains on the ground, taking up a lot of parking space.

“Bell has left their cable box in our driveway for 6 months and despite 10+ tickets hasnt done anything about it bell” wrote U/legit4u. “When it sits in my driveway, I lose 1/2 of my parking spots.”

The Redditor has filed 10+ complaints, and every time they are told that a technician will contact them within 48 hours, but the majority of the time, no call is received. When they do receive a call, they are given a timeline for the box to be reattached to the pole, but nothing has happened.

“I just want to be able to park at my own home fam,” wrote the Redditor. Several Redditors were quick to offer tips to make Bell fix the box with haste.

“Cut the lines to it haha im sure someone will come out asap,” wrote one user, while another said, “Send an invoice to them for the parking spot they’re using. $300 a month seems fair.”

“Snip the fiber going in and call it a day. When the gang comes by to fix it you plead ignorance, but point out if it was pole mounted this wouldn’t happen. Repeat as needed until desired results are reached,” wrote one user, while a different user said, “Tell them if it’s moved by end of the week your gonna cut the wires and put it on the road. And when they don’t show and it happens they will come really quick.”

It is unclear why the company has not responded to the numerous service requests made by the homeowner, but what is clear is that Bell definitely needs to invest in better customer service and provide timely resolution to service requests.

Kia’s chunky EV9 offers 540km range and Level 3 self-driving

After revealing its three-row EV9 a few weeks ago, Kia has shared several specs tied to the electric vehicle (EV).

First off, the expansive vehicle’s GT-line trim features a Level 3 Highway Driving Pilot (HPD) that utilizes LiDAR and other sensors that allow users to “take a break from controlling the vehicle” by mapping objects around it.

Kia says Level 3 HPD provides “intelligent, proactive, real-time assistance across a wide range of conditions.” It’s unclear if this feature will be available in the Canadian version of the vehicle.

Kia EV9Regarding range, Kia claims the RWD Long Range EV9 with a 99.8kWh battery can hit 540km (336 miles). The car will also be available in an AWD variant with a 99.8kWh battery and a standard 76.1kWh RWD base-level range version. Other notable specs include 0-99km (o-62 miles) in 9.2 seconds with the RWD Long Range 150kW motor and 8.2 seconds with the 160kW monitor in the Standard Range configuration. Finally, the AWD model with dual-motor 283kW power can hit 99km in six seconds.

Like several other automakers, Kia is also locking specific functionality behind digital purchases via its Connect Store, including an enhanced light pattern on the grille and an additional “Boost” feature that boosts torque to hit 0-99km in 5.2 seconds. It’s unclear how much these additional new features will cost. The EV9 is also expected to be the first Kia to support ultra-wide band digital keys.

It’s unclear how much the EV9 will cost in Canada, but EV is expected to release in some regions towards the second half of the year. In other electric vehicle-related news, Hyundai recently confirmed that its upcoming Ioniq 6 sedan starts at $54,999 in Canada.

Federal government considering standard charger, right-to-repair in 2023 budget

Canada might follow the EU and standardize chargers for electronic devices and, if we’re lucky, implement right-to-repair rules.

CTV News spotted a small detail tucked away in the 2023 federal budget released on March 28th: the Liberals plan to look at implementing a standard charging port across Canada. The goal? To save Canadians money and reduce waste.

“Every time Canadians purchase new devices, they need to buy new chargers to go along with them, which drives up costs and increases electronic waste,” the budget says.

Unfortunately, details remain scarce beyond that the government plans to work with international partners and other stakeholders.

The move comes after the EU caused a stir in the fall when it passed legislation mandating the use of USB-C on some electronic devices, including smartphones. Though the EU rules won’t come into effect until late 2024, it’s already making waves with signs pointing to Apple’s 2023 iPhone (likely the iPhone 15 Pro), including a USB-C port.

The EU regulation will eventually apply to laptops as well, though it’s not clear if Canada will consider going that far.

While consolidating smartphones and other devices to one type of charger could definitely help cut down on electronic waste (e-waste), it’s unlikely it will save Canadians money. The reality is most companies will simply pass the cost on to Canadians or stop including chargers altogether without reducing prices. (There’s an argument for not including chargers but in my experience, most Canadians aren’t fans of the idea).

Unless the government does something to prevent that reality (and I don’t see that happening), the only way this will save Canadians money is by reducing the number of chargers they need. If everything works off USB-C, then you really only need one USB-C charger instead of a handful of different cables and bricks.

Right-to-repair for Canadians?

Another part of the budget addresses right-to-repair rules. For those unfamiliar with the term, it generally refers to regulations that enable people to repair their own electronics.

This stems from the fact that the majority of electronics, including laptops and smartphones, are designed to limit repairability. For example, the use of custom screws and tools, glues and adhesives, and other techniques can make it extremely difficult or impossible to repair tech. This in turn, forces people to either purchase new technology when existing tech breaks or pay hefty fees to manufacturers to repair their tech.

“When it comes to broken appliances or devices, high repair fees and a lack of access to specific parts often mean Canadians are pushed to buy new products rather than repairing the ones they have,” the 2023 budget says.

It goes on to note that the government “will work to implement a right to repair, with the aim of introducing a targeted framework for home appliances and electronics in 2024.”

The government plans to launch public consultations on the matter in the summer and work closely with provinces and territories to advance the implementation.

Rounding out tech-related highlights from the 2023 budget includes a plan to crack down on “junk fees” like roaming charges.
