Fido increasing internet rates by $3/mo for some customers

Rogers flanker brand Fido warned some customers that their internet service price will increase by $3 plus tax.

According to a post on Reddit by ‘u/WSJ_pilot,’ Fido tucked a notice about the incoming increase at the end of internet bills. u/WSJ_pilot shared a picture of the notice, which says:

“On the date of your first bill after February 12th, 2023, the monthly service fee for your Internet package as shown on this bill will increase by $3 plus taxes.”

The notice goes on to say that customers with active discounts will still get those discounts. As usual with Canadian carriers, discounts apply to whatever the base cost of the plan is, and companies remain free to change that as much as they want.

It’s not clear how widespread the price hike is. MobileSyrup reached out to Rogers for more details about the change.

Lenovo unveils new Legion and LOQ gaming laptops

Lenovo unveiled several new gaming laptops and PCs meant to capture several price points. There are new machines under Lenovo’s Legion branding, as well as new LOQ (pronounced ‘lock’) devices that bring the Legion look and feel to entry-level pricing.

On the Legion side, Lenovo unveiled the Legion Slim 7i and 7 Gen 8 (pictured above), and the Slim 5i and 5 Gen 8. The Legion Slim 7 series offers up to 13th Gen Intel Core i9-13900H or AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS CPUs coupled with up to 32GB of RAM and up to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU.

The Slim 7 series sports 16-inch 16:10 Lenovo ‘PureSight’ displays with WQXGA 240Hz VRR and 500 nits brightness. Alternatively, customers can get a 3.2K 165Hz VRR display with 430 nits of brightness. The laptops also feature Lenovo’s ColdFront 5.0 thermal system to keep cool under heavy load, boosted by Lenovo’s onboard ‘LA AI’ chip to dynamically tune thermal performance.

Lenovo Legion Slim 5i

Meanwhile, the Slim 5 series has similar offerings but with slightly lower specs. There’s the 13th Gen Intel Core i7-13700H or AMD Ryzen 9 7840HS chips, GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU, up to 32GB of RAM (expandable to 64GB aftermarket) and more. ColdFront 5.0 and the LA AI chip are also available.

The Legion Slim 7i starts at $1,769.99 USD (about $2,422.76 CAD) and the Legion Slim 5i will start at $1,349.99 USD (about $1,849.99 CAD). Both will be available starting April 2023. Meanwhile, the Slim 7 starts at $1,769.99 USD (about $2,425.24 CAD) and the Slim 5 starts at $1,199.99 USD (about $1,644.11 CAD). Both will be available starting in May 2023.

LOQing up the low end

Lenovo LOQ 16

As for LOQ, there are the 16i and 16a, 15i and 15a, and the LOQ Tower 17i. The LOQ laptops come in 15- or 16-inch screen sizes and offer 13th Gen Intel Core or AMD Ryzne 7000 series CPUs, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU and up to 16GB of RAM.

Displays offer up to 350 nits of brightness and 165Hz refresh rates with VRR and G-Sync support. Lenovo’s LA AI chip also makes an appearance to help tune performance.

Moreover, the LOQ laptops offer accessible RAM and PCIe slots for future expansion down the line.

Ubisoft now has an AI-powered background dialogue writer

Ubisoft La Forge has created a new in-house AI tool called Ghostwriter that aims to help game developers and narrative writers save time and focus on the bigger picture of game development.

When it comes to creating immersive open-world games, every detail counts. One key element that helps build a player’s sense of immersion is background chatter, which is known in the gaming industry as “barks.” Writing barks can be a time-consuming task, and with this in mind, game developers at Ubisoft are hoping to streamline the process with a new AI tool called Ghostwriter.

Ghostwriter is a machine learning tool that generates first drafts of barks. This saves game writers time so they can focus on the more important aspects of game development.

Using Ghostwriter is rather simple. Writers input the character and type of interaction they are looking to create. The tool then produces variations of dialogue, each with two slightly different options, for writers to review. As the writers make edits to the drafts, Ghostwriter updates, ideally producing more tailored options moving forward.

Ubisoft is the latest in a long list of companies hopping on the AI trend.

Xbox Canada has launched a new podcast called Xbox Passport, a Game Pass podcast hosted by Leah Jewer, the co-founder of Girls on Games, and Steve Saylor, a notable accessibility advocate.

The inaugural episode of Xbox Passport features Larry Hryb (Major Nelson), the director of programming for Microsoft’s Xbox Live.

The first episode of the podcast is available on iHeart Radio, Spotify and Apple Podcasts and YouTube.

Epic Games to share 40 percent of store revenue with creators

Epic Games is introducing a new way for custom Fortnite island creators to get paid based on engagement with their published island content.

Under the new system, labelled as Creator Economy 2.o, Epic Games will hand out 40 percent of net revenue from most real-money purchases to creators. This system offers a more proportionate and fairer way of rewarding creators if their Island becomes popular.

According to Epic Games’ blog post about the new system, it started reserving 40 percent of revenue from real-money purchases from its store starting March 1st. That revenue is to be distributed among creators based on the engagement created by eligible island publishers’ creative work.

“Epic’s existing Support-A-Creator program that underpinned Creator Economy 1.0 remains, but is returning to its roots as an affiliate marketing program for streamers and social media content creators,” wrote Epic. In Creator Economy 1.0, creators had to share special codes with their fans, and they would then receive a five percent share of their purchases. However, this approach only worked if players knew to use the code. Players can now show support for their favourite creators’ islands simply by playing them.

According to Epic, “payouts are based on engagement metrics that contribute to the health of the overall Fortnite ecosystem.” At launch, the metrics fall into two groups:

  • Player Popularity: Islands that attract new players and re-engage lapsed players signal an experience that Fortnite players love, so the number of players newly joining Fortnite, and lapsed players returning to Fortnite contribute to this calculation.
  • Player Retention: Islands where players return day-to-day and week-to-week indicate compelling gameplay, so consistent play and returning players contribute to this calculation.

Creators can sign up for Economy 2.0 through a portal, and those who join on or before April 21st will be paid for engagement dating back to March 1st. To qualify, individuals only need to be 18 years old and have a Fortnite account at least 90 days old.

The Creator Economy 2.0 system is a positive step for creators and players alike, as it offers a more proportionate and fairer way of rewarding creators. The move by Epic Games is sure to keep the platform competitive and engaging for years to come.

Ubisoft+ Multi Access comes to Canada through Amazon’s Luna

Ubisoft has revealed that Ubisoft+ Multi Access is now available in Canada, the U.K. and Germany.

The subscription platform allows you to play select Ubisoft games, including Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Rainbow Six Siege, The Division 2 and Far Cry 6, through Amazon’s Luna game streaming platform and on PC via Ubisoft Connect. Ubisoft+ Multi Access was previously only available in the United States.

It’s important to note that Ubisoft+’s full over 100 game library isn’t available with Multi Access. A complete list of streamable titles can be found here (there are 39 games in total). That said, you can stream select games you already own via Luna if you link your Ubisoft account with the platform.

The company says that Multi Access includes the premium editions of titles, DLC, 10 percent off in-game currency and day-one releases.

In Canada, Ubisoft+ starts at $19.99 per month, and Multi Access starts at $22.99 per month. This means that if you’re interested in subscribing to Luna and accessing more than just Ubisoft titles, you’d need to pay $12.99 per month for Luna+ on top of the Ubisoft+ Multi Access cost.
