Kirby’s Dream Land 2 is the next Game Boy title coming to Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo is adding several new games to its Switch Online library, including Kirby’s Dream Land 2 and BurgerTime Deluxe, bringing the catalogue of Game Boy titles to 11 games.

On the SNES and NES side, the pool game Side Pocket is coming to the Super Nintendo, while top-down shooter Xevious is coming to the Nintendo Entertainment System. Out of this lineup, I’ve only played Kirby’s Dream Land 2, the first title in the series to give Kirby the various powers the series is most known for now. Back in 1995, it was a technical marvel that the game could run on the rapidly aging Game Boy.

All of the above titles are available with a standard Switch Online subscription ($4.99/month), while the Expansion Pack tier offers access to Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Advance titles ($63.99/year). Last week, Nintendo brought GBA side-scrolling classic Metroid Fusion to the Switch.

Upcoming Game Boy Advance titles include F-Zero Maximum Velocity, Golden Sun, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons and more.

U.S. wants TikTok’s owners to sell their stake in the company, or face a possible ban

The U.S. government has given TikTok an ultimatum, either the app’s Chinese owners sell their shares, or the government might ban the app in the United States.

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S., known as Cfius, made the demand to address ongoing security concerns regarding user data.

Similar privacy concerns have also been ongoing north of the border. Privacy officials in Canada are examining how TikTok uses personal information, particularly of its younger users.

The federal government has also banned the app on government devices. All provinces and territories in Canada have followed the federal government’s steps, and several municipalities have also taken action.

ByteDance, a company based in Beijing, owns TikTok. WSJ reports global investors own 60 percent of the company’s shares, employees own 20 percent, and founders, including Zhang Yiming and Liang Rubo, own the remaining 20 percent. “The founders’ shares carry outsize voting rights, as is common with tech companies,” the publication notes.

The company argues the forced sale wouldn’t address the U.S. government’s concerns.

“The best way to address concerns about national security is with the transparent, U.S.-based protection of U.S. user data and systems, with robust third-party monitoring, vetting, and verification, which we are already implementing,” a TikTok spokesperson told the publication.

Google kills Glass for good

Nearly a decade ago, Google unveiled Glass, one of the first major augmented reality (AR) devices and the catalyst for significant controversy. Now, Google is killing Glass for good.

As reported by 9to5Google, Google announced it will no longer sell the Glass Enterprise Edition 2 headsets. Moreover, the company will support existing headsets until September 15th, 2023, support meaning that customers can get replacement devices under existing programs until the deadline. Google said it doesn’t have any software updates planned for Glass.

Existing headsets will continue to work as normal after the deadline, and developers will still be able to update their apps. Of course, that doesn’t mean everything will keep working — notably, Google warned that its ‘Meet on Glass’ app — which launched less than a year ago — isn’t guaranteed to work beyond September 15th.

Google Glass had an interesting journey. Google first unveiled Glass in April 2012 and started selling a prototype of the headset to qualified ‘Glass Explorers’ in the U.S. a year later. Except, the prototypes cost $1,500 USD at the time (about $1,937.10 USD in 2023, or roughly $2,663.32 CAD) and the headsets weren’t exactly billed as prototypes.

Moreover, the headsets went on to cause several controversies, particularly around privacy, since Glass had built-in cameras. Some businesses even put up anti-Glass signs and Glass owners were called ‘Glassholes.’ Google later killed the Glass Explorer program.

In 2017, Google went all-in on business with Glass Enterprise Edition and in 2019, released an updated Enterprise Edition 2. The Enterprise headsets proved useful in some applications, such as in hospitals and surgeries.

Interestingly, 9to5 notes that Google recently started testing some integrations between Glass and its Pixel phones. It seems somewhat odd that Google would suddenly kill off the product amid testing new applications, but perhaps it’s paving way for something new.

Android Police pointed out that Google teased a new AR glasses product at Google I/O 2022 and with I/O 2023 right around the corner, maybe we’ll see the spiritual successor to Glass (with new branding, of course — can’t be associated with those Glassholes anymore).

Bing AI Chatbot waitlist removed for all users

Microsoft’s Bing AI chatbot is now available to use for all.

Up until recently, users had to join a waitlist and wait for their turn to be able to use the chatbot. Now, it seems as though Microsoft has removed the waitlist, allowing anyone to sign up and use the GPT-4-powered chatbot immediately, as spotted by Windows Central.

I tried to join the waitlist with a new Microsoft account, and access to the chatbot was granted immediately.

It is unclear whether Microsoft has temporarily removed the waitlist or if it has been removed permanently. Microsoft has not yet commented on this development. The company does have an AI event scheduled for today, Thursday, March 16th, hosted by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and CVP Jared Spataro, where the company might detail why it removed the waitlist.

This waitlist change comes just a day after Microsoft confirmed that its Bing AI chatbot has been running on GPT-4, OpenAI’s next-generation AI language model. This news has sparked a lot of interest and excitement, especially since GPT-4 is not yet publicly available. Microsoft’s decision to remove the waitlist may be related to this news, as the company may be eager to showcase its cutting-edge AI technology.

In addition to the waitlist being removed, Jordi Ribas, corporate vice president at Bing and Microsoft, revealed in a Tweet that the company has increased the limit on the Bing AI chatbot to 15 chats per session and up to 150 per day, up from five chats per session and 50 chats per day.

It will be interesting to see how the chatbot evolves and expands in the coming months, especially with the integration of GPT-4 technology.

Minecraft: Bedrock Edition is coming to ChromeOS

Chromebook users would soon be able to play Mojang Studios’ Minecraft.

Microsoft has announced the release of an early access version of Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on ChromeOS, expanding the game’s compatibility to Chromebooks.

Thanks to Android support on ChromeOS, Minecraft will run on selected Chromebook models (at first), and will include cross-device play with friends, marketplace access, and the ability to play on Realms.

The release is only early access, and is also limited to Chromebooks that meet specific minimum requirements. “Early access means that in this first stage, only selected Chromebook devices that meet the minimum requirements will get the option to buy Minecraft, so you’ll have to check the Google Play Store to see if Minecraft is available for you,” wrote Mojang in a blog post.

Minecraft says the early access will also serve as a test of the game’s performance on the platform, before making it available to more players by likely lowering the barrier to entry. There isn’t a confirmed a release date for the full version of Minecraft on Chromebooks, but the team plans to spend the coming weeks fixing bugs, and once officially released, the game will be available to all compatible Chromebooks via the Google Play Store.

Overall, the launch of Minecraft on Chromebooks is a welcome development for the game’s fans, providing access to a broader audience and allowing cross-device play with friends.

How to watch Beast Wars: Transformers for free in Canada

I love Transformers, including everything from the 1984 series, the 1986 cinematic masterpiece, and even the 2018 film Bumblebee.

I’ve seen many of the cartoons, watched the Shia Lebouf and Mark Wahlberg movies and even played the War of Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron games, but the best of the franchise is still Beast Wars. The 1996 animated series, which had three seasons and a successor series called Beast Machines, is now officially available on YouTube.

In Canada, the Transformers official YouTube channel has full episodes of Beast Wars (or Beasties if you’re Canadian) streaming every Wednesday. Currently, the channel is on episode five of the 53 total across all three seasons.

Not to be shady, but the quality is exactly as you remembered it back in 1996, so it’s a bit rough to watch. If you’re interested, I have seen some people post 4K remasters of the original series online, so I’d consider doing a bit of research if you find the official episodes’ quality lacklustre.

This free Beasties content drops ahead of the live-action Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, a sequel to Bumblebee launching on June 9th.

Are you playing Tim Hortons’ Roll Up To Win this year?

Tim Hortons is currently hosting its annual “Roll Up To Win” contest.

And if you’ve noticed, the company has replaced the once famous “Roll Up The Rim” slogan with “Roll Up To Win.”

This is because Tim Hortons’ hot drink cups no longer have prizes hidden within their rims. The long-time norm stopped during the pandemic. People often rolled up the rim with their teeth, and with the onset of COVID-19, that wasn’t the safest way to limit the spread of germs.

So the company moved the contest online in 2021, and the practice has been digital ever since.

Now, users have to scan the Tim Hortons app or their physical card (to play online) to collect chances to win prizes. But with the company’s recent privacy scandal, I’m not sure how many Canadians would be on board.

As a recap, the Privacy Commissioners of Canada, Quebec, Alberta, and British Columbia found the app tracked users’ geolocation data. In May 2019, the app collected user data almost every five minutes, tracking where customers lived, worked, or if they were at a Tim Hortons competitor.

While The TDL Group, the coffee chain’s Canadian operator, said it would delete the data in question, current laws mean it wasn’t subjected to disciplinary action.

As a lame excuse for an apology, the company offered all impacted users a free hot beverage and baked good.

We want to know, do you plan to still play Tim Hortons’ Roll Up to Win this year despite the controversy surrounding the fast food chain’s app?
