Toronto-based Snowman reveals Laya’s Horizon, its upcoming wingsuit game

After teasing the game a few weeks ago, Toronto-based Snowman — the studio behind Alto’s Adventure and Odyssey — has revealed its next title, Laya’s Horizon.

Unlike the studio’s previous games, Laya’s Horizon will simultaneously hit iOS and Android devices through Netfix’s gaming platform. This means the game is free if you’re a Netflix subscriber.

I’ve spent a brief amount of time playing Laya’s Horizon, and it’s already clear the wingsuit-focused title is Snowman’s most ambitious yet.

The game features a stripped-down, simplistic art style, and tasks players with flying through several different biomes while accomplishing a list of goals while collecting yellow gems. There’s a visceral sense of speed to the mobile game brought out by its unique touch controls.

If Laya’s Horizon sounds somewhat similar to Alto’s Adventure/Odyssey, you’re on the right track — the 2D endless runner’s DNA seems to be present in Laya’s Horizon in some ways.

Laya’s Horizon joins other notable titles on Netflix, including Into the Breach, Spiritfarer, Oxenfree and more. Snowman’s last title was Lucky Luna, a pixelated side-scroller also released through Netflix’s gaming platform.

I’ll share a more in-depth look at the game closer to its release on May 2nd.

Black Mirror season 6 arrives on Netflix this June

Black Mirror is back this summer.

Netflix confirmed that Season 6 of the dystopian, dark sci-fi anthology series is coming to the streaming platform this June.

The service even revealed a list of top acting talent that would grace the screen this time around, including Aaron Paul, Anjana Vasan, Annie Murphy, Clara Rugaard, Josh Hartnett, Kate Mara, Myha’la Herrold, Paapa Essiedu, Rob Delaney, Salma Hayek Pinault, Samuel Blenkin, and Zazie Beetz and more.

Alongside the ‘first look’ photos from the upcoming season, Netflix also released the official season 6 trailer.

“You’ve been wondering. You’ve been waiting. You’ve been warned. The sixth season of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror is BACK. The most unpredictable, unclassifiable and unexpected season yet is arriving in June on NETFLIX,” reads the trailer’s description on YouTube. The new season comes four years after the show’s previous instalment.

“Partly as a challenge, and partly to keep things fresh for both me and the viewer, I began this season by deliberately upending some of my own core assumptions about what to expect,” said Brooker in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum.

As indicated by Variety back in 2022, the new season will likely have more than three episodes, and they’re going to be “even more cinematic in scope than previous seasons.” Are you excited about new Black Mirror episodes? Let us know in the comments below.

Telus and Bell now allow for 5G+ access on $85 monthly plans

Bell and Telus now offer 5G+ access on their respective $85/month plans.

The $85/month plan is the cheapest option at Telus for one line. It provides 25GB of data at speeds up to 1Gbps and unlimited data at a reduced speed. However, the plan is only available for users who bring their own devices.

The company enacted the policy earlier this month, which previously allowed customers to purchase a device through Telus’ financing program.

Bell also offers 5G+ on its $85/month plan. It’s the cheapest plan option for users looking to use 5G+ services. However, the plan is not limited to users who bring their own devices. Also, unlike Telus, Bell has a cheaper $65/month 5G plan as well.

Rogers has been offering 5G+ access on its $85/month plan for a while now.

5G+ uses the 3500 MHz spectrum and builds on previously available 5G technology.

New leak suggests the iPad will get lock screen customization with iOS 17

Apple is working on bringing lock screen customisation features to the iPad, according to a leak from Twitter user @analyst941. The new options will allegedly arrive in the upcoming iPadOS 17 update.

Last year Apple brought a flurry of new personalisation options to the iPhone lock screen, but unfortunately iPad users were left behind. This new update would provide feature parity across the two lineups.

The iPhone is rumoured to be getting even more lock screen functionality this year, which will arrive on the iPad at the same time according to the leak.

The source does not have a particularly lengthy track record to go off of, so reliability is unclear. However, the user has leaked accurate Apple information in the past.

The latest software updates for the iPad and iPhone are expected to be announced by Apple at WWDC in June.

You can now keep track of your cat effortlessly thanks to Tile’s new tracker

Forget about tagging your phone, wallet, earbuds, keys or anything else that you deem essential. Tile, the company known for its AirTag-like trackers, now has a new offering that helps make sure you never lose the most prized possession of all — your feline friend.

The new Tile for Cats tracker from Life360 is a version of the Tile Sticker tracker complete with a silicon attachment and a 250-foot Bluetooth range. Seriously, it’s meant to be attached to your cat’s collar so that you always know exactly where your precious furbaby is.

The battery for the Tile for Cats tracker is set to last three whole years (that’s around 29 cat years, by the way), with the sticker being easily replaceable. It also features AI assistant integration for Siri, Google Assistant and Alexa, meaning that you can find out exactly which bed your cat is hiding under with a simple voice command.

The Tile for Cats includes the Tile sticker and attachment that is designed to fit on most cat collars, including breakaway collars. The attachment is capable of stretching up to 1.7 times without breaking and is water resistant.

The new Tile is Life360’s first dedicated pet tracker, although it had teased the idea of using its standard trackers on animals before. The company’s new offering was created for indoor use only due to its limited range, so it’s best if you don’t let your kitty wander too far.

The Tile for Cats costs $40 USD (approximately $54.53 CAD.)

Rogers partnering with SpaceX to provide satellite cellular services

Rogers will use SpaceX satellites to provide mobile phone services to Canadians across the country.

CEO Tony Staffieri shared details at the company’s annual general meeting, stating the partnership will allow Canadians to make 911 calls in all situations, including natural disasters.

SpaceX will use Starlink’s low earth orbit satellites to provide coverage across the country. The companies will work together to provide users with the ability to text first, with voice and data services following soon after. The technology will work with 5G and 4G smartphones once it becomes available.

Rogers is also working with Lynk Global to expand their technology in Canada. The U.S.- based company has sent and received texts from space through unmodified standard mobile devices.

“These investments meant that Canadians will be connected everywhere from remote wilderness and national parks to rural highways,” Staffieri said.

Tesla’s newly released Impact Report sheds light on its carbon footprint

Tesla has released its 2022 Impact Report, and with it comes a clear picture of the electric vehicle company’s carbon footprint. This marks the first time the company has revealed its supply chain emissions, making its overall carbon footprint more prominent than previously reported.

Last year, Tesla did disclose the amount of greenhouse gas pollution generated from direct operation and customers charging their EVs. This accounted for the equivalent of around 2.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide.

What Tesla didn’t mention was considered indirect emissions, which often count for a substantial portion of a company’s carbon footprint.

In 2022’s Impact Report it was revealed that the EV company produced the equivalent of roughly 30.7 million tons of carbon dioxide through its supply chain emissions.

That’s 28.2 million tons more than reported last year without including indirect emissions.

A company’s carbon footprint is often broken down into three Scopes. The first is direct emissions from its own facilities, the second is emissions from its electricity use, such as heating and cooling, and the third is all other indirect emissions from supply chains, including the lifecycle of the products a company makes.

It’s not uncommon for companies to only release Scopes 1 and 2, making carbon footprints seem smaller. Tesla followed this practice initially, as its Scope 1 and 2 emissions only add up to around 610,000 metric tons of CO2 last year.

This practice could be coming to an end, however. The SEC proposed rules last year that would not only force all public companies to share their Scope 1 and 2 emissions, but large companies would also be required to report their indirect Scope 3 emissions in some instances. The new rule was slated to be enforced in October of 2022 but has since been delayed.

CEO Elon Musk revealed a self-titled “Master Plan” for Tesla last month, which included reaching “sustainable energy for all of the earth,” so hopefully, he’s able to include lowering his own company’s carbon footprint into the plan as well.

The first line of Tesla’s 2022 Impact Report reads, “A Sustainable Future is Within Reach.” Now, with the company’s official emission numbers having been revealed, the question becomes, is that sustainable future as close as Tesla thinks?
