iPhone 13 Pro macro photography toggle is coming this fall

Though I didn’t encounter this problem, several early iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max reviews have cited that it’s not possible to turn off macro photography when you’re using the smartphones’ ultra wide-angle lens to snap a picture of a subject close up.

However, a fix for this issue is already in the works that includes a toggle to turn macro photography on and off, according to a statement Apple sent to MobileSyrup.

iPhone 13 macro shot

Macro photography with the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max is one of the smartphones’ best new features.

Both the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max can focus on objects at just 2cm away. I’m not entirely sure why you’d be taking a wide-angle shot and want to be close to a subject, but I guess this could happen if you were trying to take a group selfie or a similar type of shot.

Generally, the iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max’s macro photography features is extremely impressive. While I found that it can sometimes be challenging to get the lens to focus when you’re taking snapping a photo of an object that’s moving, it’s generally works quite well.

For more on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, check out my review.

Pixel 6 weather widget shows up in Google app beta teardown

Those paying close attention to Google’s Pixel 6 ads may have noticed a fancy new weather widget. However, that widget so far hasn’t been available to older Pixel phones — it seems that may change.

9to5Google uncovered two new weather widgets in a teardown of the Google app beta version 12.37 APK file. There are two versions of the widget: a pill shape on an angle and a boring old square with rounded corners.

Although more interesting, the weird angled pill widget doesn’t show nearly as much information. It offers up the temperature and an icon indicating the current weather condition. The square version, on the other hand, offers temperature, current weather, the day’s high and low and your location.

Both widgets look nice and adapt their colours to your wallpaper in Android 12. At the moment, it’s not clear if these widgets will be available on older versions of Android.

Also, for anyone desperately wanting to get their hands on the new weather widgets, they’re not officially available yet. You’ll have to wait for them to launch, presumably alongside Android 12 and the Pixel 6 later this year.

Apple giving away Apple Music 6-month trial with AirPods and Beats purchase

If you’ve been holding off for a decent deal before upgrading your Apple AirPods or Beats headphones, now might be the moment you’ve been waiting for. Apple is currently offering six months free of Apple Music with the purchase of several different AirPods models or Beats headphones/earbuds.

According to Apple, the AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, Beats Studio Buds, Powerbeats, Powerbeats Pro and Beats Solo Pro, all qualify for the deal.

It’s important to point out that this offer is only available to “new subscribers with an eligible device for a limited time only,” according to the fine print on Apple’s website. Unfortunately, this means that if you’re already a current or past Apple Music subscriber, you won’t be able to add an additional six months to your subscription.

Apple also says that you need to be running iOS 15 or iPadOS 15 on your iPhone or iPad, and redeem the offer within 90 days.

As far as free Apple Music promos go, this one is pretty sweet. It’s just unfortunate that current subscribers don’t qualify for the offer.

Samsung’s Galaxy S21 FE spotted on Google’s AR certification list

At this point, the existence of Samsung’s Galaxy S21 FE has been unofficially confirmed multiple times — but now, it’s Google’s turn to leak the device.

Google’s support page lists Android devices that are certified to support Play Services for ARCore and mysteriously, the still-not-officially-announced Galaxy S21 Fan Edition is now on it.

Here are all the devices on Google’s ARCore list:

  • Infinix Mobile Zero X Neo
  • Kyocera DuraForce Ultra 5G
  • Lenovo Lenovo Tab P12 Pro
  • Motorola moto g(50) 5G
  • Motorola moto g(60)s
  • Motorola motorola edge 20
  • Motorola motorola edge 20 lite
  • Samsung Galaxy A52s 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy Wide5
  • Samsung Galaxy S21 Fan Edition
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip2 5G
  • Tecno Phantom X
  • Vivo X60 Pro+
  • Vivo V2105
  • Xiaomi Pad 5
  • Zebra ET51 10-inch Enterprise Tablet

It’s odd that the list includes the Z Flip 2 5G considering that phone doesn’t exist, but it’s probably just Samsung’s foldable Z Flip 3 with the wrong name.

Being on this certification list means that the S21 FE’s hardware is certified by Google to use augmented reality in apps.

While Samsung still hasn’t officially revealed the S21 FE, the handset has been spotted on Samsung France’s website, on the Bluetooth SIG, Canada’s Radio Equipment List, TENAA and more.

Short hands-on clip shows off pre-production Pixel 6 Pro

Google’s upcoming Pixel 6 Pro has turned up in a hands-on video posted online, giving viewers a good look at the back of the device and what appears to be a refreshed set-up screen.

Spotted by a Discord user and uploaded to Twitter by Brandon Lee (@thisistechtoday), the video shows what appears to be a pre-production Pixel 6 Pro. In the brief clip, the person holding the device shows the screen, rotates the phone to show the back glass, then flips it back to the screen.

While showing the screen, you can make out the centred hole-punch camera at the top of the display. The screen is black with colourful shape outlines moving around on the panel. There’s a message towards the bottom that says “Welcome to your Pixel,” along with typical first-set-up options like picking your language.

As the phone flips over, viewers can briefly see how the display curves over the edge. Additionally, you can kind of see how large the camera bump is.

Once the Pixel 6 Pro is flipped over, you can see the two-tone grey back panel. Thanks to the lighting in the video, it’s very clear that the Pixel 6 Pro sports a glossy back panel (lame). You can also see what appears to be a messed-up Google ‘G’ logo — 9to5Google notes that pre-production Pixel devices often sport a similar logo.

Still, as much as I despise glossy glass back panels, the Pixel 6 Pro looks pretty great. This new hands-on leak is just further building on my excitement for the Pixel 6 line.

Tesla drivers aren’t watching the road when ‘self-driving’ software is on

In news that manages to be simultaneously unsurprising and terrifying, researchers from MIT have found that drivers pay less attention to the road when Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving’ software is switched on.

According to the study published in Accident Analysis & Prevention, “visual behavior patterns change before and after” drivers activate the electric car’s autopilot software.

Specifically, the study found that drivers didn’t look out the windshield as much, noting that “non-driving related glances to the down/center-stack areas were the most frequent and the longest,” with nearly a quarter (22 percent) of those glances lasting longer than two seconds.

The “down/center-stack areas” would be around the spot where Tesla has decided to install a suped-up infotainment system in its moving vehicles, featuring a sizable screen and an AMD chip so you can play The Witcher 3 while blasting down the 401.

This is something of a big deal considering that — despite its ambitious name — Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving” software isn’t actually full self-driving software.

Rather, it’s an automated driving assistant, as TechCrunch and Engadget both reminded readers, like cruise control or self-parking proximity sensors.

This means that even with the autopilot software turned on, drivers must still keep their hands on the wheel and — most importantly — pay attention to the road.

Lucky for Canada, Tesla began beta testing its autopilot software in Canadian-owned vehicles in mid-September.

The ethicality of beta-testing a “self-driving” car unsupervised on public roads, using regular drivers who are apparently scientifically proven to be less attentive behind the wheel than usual when the software is activated, is a whole other conversation.

Here’s very much hoping that the recent update rolled out to some Tesla vehicles, which seems to have improved the car’s on-screen visuals and on-road driving, is enough to prevent any major accidents or injuries in Canada.

Apple has refurbished 2021 M1 iMacs in stock at the Apple Store

If you’ve been thinking about picking up Apple’s M1-powered 2021 iMac but don’t want to pay full price, now’s your chance.

Apple’s Canadian web store has a bunch of 24-inch M1 iMacs with 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU in stock in various colourways. Check out all the options below:

As expected, the discounts only amount to about $240 to $300, but this is a solid deal given Apple’s stellar reputation when it comes to its used devices.

“For the average person looking for a powerful, stunning-looking desktop that easily blends in with their home decor and isn’t an RGB-filled black, rectangular box, there really isn’t anything else out there like the new iMac (2021),” wrote MobileSyrup managing editor Patrick O’Rourke in his 8/10 review of the 2021 M1 iMac.

Apart from M1 iMacs, Apple has also finally begun selling refurbished iPhones on its Canadian web store. Previously, refurbished iPhones were only officially available on Apple’s U.S. web store. Find other refurbished iPhone deals here.

Video shows off Samsung Galaxy S22+ concept design

A concept design for Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S22+ has surfaced online.

This concept smartphone design comes from the Technizo Concept YouTube channel, which partnered with LetsGoDigitalIt’s worth noting that this is only a concept and not a leak, and it’s based on the Galaxy S21 series.

The design resembles the S21 series and sports a very similar rear-facing camera setup and design. The camera sensors on this handset seem quite large, however. On the front the phone sports a hole-punch front camera with small bezels.

The device has a slight back curve and all its keys are on the right-hand side, including the power button and volume rocker. The concept video also shows the phone in some beautiful colours — hopefully the actual S22+ ships with similar colour options.

Rumours indicate that the phone features a 50-megapixel main shooter, a 12-megapixel ultrawide and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera. The phone is also expected to feature a 4,500mAh battery and a 45W fast wired charging.

Further, the phone is expected to feature Samsung’s or Qualcomm’s next-gen processors.
