Twitter’s ‘Super Follows’ is making less-than-super profits

Twitter’s new paid subscription feature, where users can ‘Super Follow’ someone to gain access to exclusive paywalled tweets, has kicked off with a whimper rather than a bang, according to data from two different app analytics platforms.

TechCrunch reports that in the two weeks since launching ‘Super Follows’ at the beginning of September, Twitter only made around $600 in Canada and $6,000 in the United States, according to Sensor Tower.

Another analytics service, called Appfigures, claims that Twitter made $12,400 in the U.S. in the first half of September.

For context, the ‘Super Follows’ subscription tiers are $2.99 USD (about $3.77 CAD), $4.99 (roughly $6.29 CAD), and $9.99 USD (approximately $12.59 CAD) per month.

While only a small group of U.S.-based creators are currently allowed to set up ‘Super Follows’ subscriptions on their account, any iOS user in Canada or the U.S. can pay to subscribe to those accounts.

Given Twitter has millions of active users in both countries, these initial reported profit numbers seem a little low.

Twitter officially released Super Follows on September 1st, after teasing the new feature at an Analyst Day event on February 25th.

OnePlus, Oppo to launch unified Android 13 platform on OnePlus’ 2022 flagship

After OnePlus and Oppo’s merged OxygenOS and ColourOS earlier this year, there was some uncertainty about the future of software on OnePlus’ devices. Now, thanks to statements made by OnePlus CEO Pete Lau, we know OnePlus is entering a new phase, and Lau calls it “OnePlus 2.0.”

“With the integration, I would like to say that OnePlus has entered the OnePlus 2.0 phase,” said Lau in a blog post. “I believe we are now a more mature and reliable technology brand that continues to bring top-quality products to users around the world with the same Never Settle spirit as before.”

First, there is the unified operating system (OS), which will combine “the fast and smooth, burdenless experience of OxygenOS, and the stability and rich features of ColorOS.” According to Lau, the yet-to-be-named unified OS will be built on Android 13 and will appear on the company’s 2022 flagship device, likely to be called OnePlus 10.

Further, Lau commented that the company would divert a lot of its focus to smartphone cameras. According to Engadget, OnePlus’s camera team of about 100 people is now 700 strong. Pair that with the company’s partnership with Hasselblad, and it will hopefully be a recipe for success. Lau stated three key camera-focused areas where the company aims to make strides:

  • “Creating a great and burdenless user experience at the very fundamental level.
  • Continuing to focus on improving color performance together with Hasselblad, the industry-leader in color, as well as with customized sensor and lenses.
  • Investing in the research and development of a range of new and improved technologies that will take the camera experience to new heights for our users.”

While it is too early to start predicting what the future holds for Oppo x OnePlus smartphones, Lau did say that “more affordable product ranges will become more localized, while continuing to offer our premium and ultra-premium flagship smartphones globally.”

Election 2021: Same old prime minister, same old memes

Canada’s 44th federal election is officially over and now the real work begins: it’s time to review the memes.

Before we get to the good internet jokes, on the off-chance you’ve turned to MobileSyrup to find out who won the election — in which case, as a tech website, we’re flattered if a bit confused? — here’s the short version of the results:

The Liberals led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau remain in power with another minority government, the New Democratic Party and Bloc Québécois gained a handful of new seats, the Conservatives lost a few, and the leaders of both the Green Party and the People’s Party of Canada failed to win in their own ridings for the second election in a row.

In short, the balance of political power in the country is largely the same, but at least we’ll always have the memes.

So, as we contemplate the surreal quality of our own democracy and an election where nothing much changed, here are some of the best tweets from the 2021 federal election:

The campaign kicked off with a yowl, as Gustave, Sheldon and Mousse pawed and scratched for voters’ attentions in the Plateau Mont-Royal riding of Montreal.

Among the many promises made along the campaign trail, the Liberal Party of Canada decided to introduce their affordable housing plan (cool!) with the meme-able statement that “Young people aren’t asking for a free house.” To which a number of young people immediately replied, I mean, yeah, if you’re offering?

After a controversial question in the English language debate spurred Quebec Premier François Legault to open up a National Assembly meeting by defining the word “woke” (Listen, I know, Quebec politics is a lot), Québec Solidaire parliamentary leader and the original #qcpoli meme king Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois posted this very well-seasoned rebuttal on Twitter.

In the final days leading up to the election, both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton took to Twitter to endorse Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Canada — which prompted U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders to step forward and throw his support behind Jagmeet Singh and the NDP.

Speaking of the U.S., as polls closed across the country and results started rolling in, so did the Jeb Bush memes which continue to be more enduring than Jeb’s actual short-lived run for U.S presidential candidacy.

2021 saw the triumphant return of Canada’s favourite trusted source for election night coverage and updates: the Domino’s Pizza Tracker™.

As the results poured in and news outlets quickly began predicting –yet another — Liberal minority government, something about the whole situation felt…oddly familiar.

Finally, after a 36-day campaign that ground parliament to a halt, all so that our elected officials could drop their pencils, leaving vital legislation addressing climate change and Canada’s socio-economic recovery half-finished on the table, to fly across the country in the midst of a global pandemic with super-contagious airborne transmission, to then return with very little changed in terms of leadership at both the national and local levels, one tweet perfectly summed up the whole situation.

Pixel 6 and 6 Pro surface on Canada’s Radio Equipment List

Google’s upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro recently turned up on Canada’s Radio Equipment List (REL).

The REL is an online database of devices and radio equipment certified for use in Canada — smartphones tend to pop up on the REL ahead of launching in Canada.

We’ve known the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro would come here for a while, but it’s nice to see actual confirmation courtesy of the government.

Unfortunately, the REL doesn’t offer much else beyond that. It confirms the names of the phones and their model number (GB7N6 for the Pixel 6 and GLU0G for the 6 Pro). The list also notes that the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are phones, but we already knew that. Finally, the REL lists both devices as being approved on September 20th.

However, the REL date doesn’t have any bearing on when a device will launch in Canada. For example, Google’s Pixel 4a received approval on May 7th, 2020. However, Google didn’t announce the phone until August, and it didn’t go on sale in Canada until September 10th. Though Google says the devices are scheduled to launch this fall.

If you want to check out the listing for yourself, head to the REL website. Due to how the website is set up, we can’t offer a direct link to the listing, but if you search ‘Pixel 6’ in the ‘Product Marketing Name’ section, the REL should surface both results.

Google Pixel Foldable concept video shows off cool design

Yesterday, a leak about a Google Pixel foldable with the codename ‘Jumbojack’ surfaced on the net. Now, Waqar Khan, a well-known designer, has released a design concept video of that phone based on the leaks.

The foldable concept looks like it was inspired by both the Pixel 6 Pro and Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3.

The designer added the look of the Pixel 6 Pro on the back with the same type of camera design. There’s also a hole-punch camera on the cover screen in the top left corner, and on the larger inner display, there’s a hole punch shooter on the right side.

The hinge looks similar to Samsung’s Z Fold 3, and the device has quite a large bottom bezel and a thick top bezel on the main screen.

Previous rumours indicate that Samsung provided the foldable display tech to Google for this Pixel handset. The rumoured phone will reportedly sport a 7.57-inch panel with a 120Hz panel.

Rumour has it that Google will launch this device before the launch of Android 12.1, so hopefully, that’s before the end of the year. It’s worth mentioning that this is only a concept, and the foldable Pixel smartphone might look very different from what’s seen here.

Google updates its iOS apps with support for Focus mode

With iOS 15 rolling out to Apple devices, apps are starting to get updates and support new features from the upgrade. That includes Google’s apps — the search giant detailed some of the changes heading to its software for iOS 15.

First up, Google updated its apps to work with the new ‘Focus mode’ in iOS 15. The company shared a few examples of how this works in practice. For one, Google Maps will still push through important notifications, such as navigation. Similarly, Google’s Home app will still send essential notifications, such as if someone’s at the door. Google Tasks will also ignore Focus mode for notifications tied to a specific time.

However, notifications that aren’t urgent will head to the iOS Notification Center when users are in Focus mode.

Another significant (and welcome) change is better Spotlight support for YouTube Music. Users can now search for songs or artists in Spotlight and jump straight into the YouTube Music app to listen to the music. Google says that Drive will also get better with Spotlight but didn’t detail any specific improvement.

And for iPadOS 15, Google confirmed that it’s bringing larger versions of its widgets for Apple tablets that should play nice on big screens.

That’s all Google outlined in its blog post. Overall, no massive changes, but definitely some welcome quality of life improvements for those who use the iPhone or iPad but rely on Google’s services.
