Apple reportedly working with LG for its 2023 foldable smartphones

Now that the iPhone 13 lineup has been revealed, Apple might be going for a significant design refresh with its rumoured future foldable, according to Business Korea.

The report states that the Cupertino, California-based tech giant’s first foldable smartphone will feature a 7.5-inch display panel developed by LG. We recently reported that LG is currently developing a new ‘Real Folding Window’ display material that doesn’t leave creases, a problem that is still prevalent in the new Flip 3 and Fold 3 smartphones. Considering Apple’s focus on perfection, the ‘Real Folding Window’ is definitely a component could be integrated into Apple’s foldable.

Further, the foldable is rumoured to have a clamshell design, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3. However, judging by Apple’s past release trends, it’s easy to argue that the company might be releasing two devices together — one mimicking Z Flip’s clamshell design, and the other taking inspiration from the Z Fold’s book design.

The report also states that the devices won’t release until 2023, giving Apple a lot of time to deliver a product that checks all the boxes.

While one may argue that Samsung is already leading the foldable market and Apple’s late entry will result in being futile, Apple’s trend of delaying features for the sake of offering a well-polished product has always worked in its favour. By 2023, Samsung would have released two additional foldable lineups, and Apple would be stepping into the market with high hopes and a foldable design that hopefully delivers.

In other foldable news, leaks indicate that Google is developing two foldables, with one expected to launch in 2021.

iOS 15 is out now with new FaceTime features and Focus notifications

iOS 15 is here, so saddle up your iPhone and start downloading the latest update to try out all of the new features. This year’s update is overall pretty bland, especially compared to the new hotness that is Material You over on Android, but it’s a worthwhile update nonetheless.

Below we’ll highlight a few of our favourite new features and what we like about them based on a few weeks with the latest iOS 15 betas, but before that, let’s go over how to install the update. As with all iOS updates, simply navigate to your Settings app, open the ‘General’ section and choose ‘Software update.’

What is this new Focus mode?

The most noticeable iOS 15 update is the new look for notifications. This time around, the app icon with each notification is larger to make it easier to see at-a-glance which app is begging for your attention.

Beyond that subtle visual flourish, there’s a new ‘Focus’ button within Settings and Control Center (the menu that allows you to change screen brightness and play/pause music playback). When you open this, it shows you a few new notification filters that can block preset apps during specific times. You need to set this up on your own, but once activated, it can be useful for blocking social notifications during work hours and work notifications during social hours.

FaceTime invites Windows and Android to the party

FaceTime Gridview

Perhaps the part of iOS 15 that will be used the most is a new FaceTime feature that allows users to set up chatrooms that you can invite people to with a link. This is just like how Zoom, Google Meet and Teams all work, putting FaceTime on slightly more level footing with those competitors. It also allows FaceTime users to invite Android and Windows users for the first time.

To be clear, non-Apple users can only be invited to a FaceTime chat; they can’t start one.

On top of all this, Apple has also added some new layouts to Facetime to make it easier to see everyone in a chat at once.

The new iMessage updates take a bit to get used to

One of the more subtle updates that’s come with iOS 15 is a new form of iMessage. For the most part, the app looks the same, but now, when you send or receive multiple photos, they get stacked in the chat instead of all displayed at once.

This looks nicer, but you can easily mistake it for just a single photo if you just glance at it.

One of the more exciting updates that seems cool but might not catch on is the new ‘Shared with you’ sections within Safari and Photos. In each of these sections, you can see links or pictures that people have sent you via iMessage, so you can quickly open them or check them out later.

Copy text from anywhere

One of the sleeper updates added in iOS 15 is the ability to copy text from pretty much anything.

Within the Photos app, you can click on a little icon in the bottom right of each picture to copy text from within the photo. If you’re in Safari, you can tap and hold onto text in images and, in pretty much every case, the phone will be able to copy it accurately.

You can also highlight phone numbers to instantly call them or addresses to get directions in Maps.

Spotlight search is the real way to get around your iPhone in 2021

If you’re not already utilizing the power of Spotlight Search on iPhone, you should really start with iOS 15.

When you pull down on the home screen in the new update, you can search for pretty much anything now. This includes the web, your photos, contacts and messages, among many other sources. You can even now use it from the iOS lock screen.

Auto translate

The iOS translate app can automatically detect when a person is speaking and will begin translation immediately. Since you can also select text in images and other things in iOS 15, you can also translate them quite easily.

This isn’t the new Safari iWanted

The new design is on the left and the old is on the right.

When Apple first revealed iOS 15 and its other software updates earlier this summer, it planned to revamp the look of Safari on all of them. While I was really excited about these visual changes, the world, apparently, was not.

The first version of iOS 15 safari was a simple bubble that floated at the bottom of the screen. If you tapped on the bubble, you could search using Google. There was also a three-dot menu and a button to see all your open tabs. Swiping across the bubble also allowed users to jump through all their open tabs quickly. This functionality, thankfully, is still in iOS 15.

The search bubble didn’t last, and instead, Apple replaced it with a much more accessible and technical-looking bottom navbar. While this version might not look as nice, it’s likely going to be a lot easier for people to adapt to.

Apple delays upgraded ‘Find My’ integrations for high-end AirPods

Apple has delayed the full Find My integrations for AirPods Pros and AirPods Max until later this fall.

Users can still use ‘Find My’ to locate their lost AirPods that are within the Bluetooth range of their devices, but the high-end AirPods will also tap into the full power of the ‘Find My’ network later this autumn.

This means that if you lose your AirPods Pro at a restaurant and then you go home, you’ll be able to see where they are if other people with iPhones, Macs or iPad are near them. This is how the iPhone and Apple AirTags work.

Several other iOS/iPadOS 15 features, such as SharePlay, Universal Control, the App Privacy Dashboard, will be delayed until after the OS’ official September 20th release.

DoorDash expands alcohol delivery to Canada

DoorDash is expanding alcohol delivery to Canada.

The service launched in California before the COVID-19 pandemic and has been expanding to other U.S. states over the past several months.

Now, Canadians can toggle to the ‘Alcohol’ tab of the DoorDash app to view a selection of drinks from restaurants, grocery stores, convenience stores and other businesses.

To verify that you’re 19 or order, the DoorDash app has a one-time requirement that you upload a photo of your ID. DoorDash says its delivery people, ‘Dashers,’ will see a blurred version of the ID that displays your photo and birth date only. They’ll use this to visually confirm your identity upon drop-off.

DoorDash is available on iOS, Android and the web.

Alongside this announcement, DoorDash has revealed partnerships with Responsibility.org and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) to promote safe and responsible drinking.

Google developing two foldables, one expected to launch in 2021: rumour

After old leaks about an upcoming foldable Pixel device, codenamed ‘Passport,’ we now have another leak indicating that a second Pixel foldable, dubbed ‘Jumbojack,’ might be on its way.

Uncovered in the upcoming Android 12.1 code by 9to5Google, the foldable is reported to have a dual-display setup, similar to the Samsung Z Fold 3, with main and cover displays that shut off depending on how you’re using the device. However, the publication states that the ‘Jumbojack’ codename might reference Jack in the Box’s Jumbo Jack cheeseburger, indicating that the upcoming device will fold in ‘burger style,’ similar to the Galaxy Z Flip 3.

While no information about the device’s screen or internal specs were unearthed, 9to5Google did note that the device will likely run on a foldable-specific Android 12.1 version with split-screen features to take advantage of the presumable large display.

Whether this second foldable will ever see the light of day is still a mystery, although credible leaker Evan Blass stated that the ‘Passport’ foldable is on track to launch by the end of 2021.

With the release of Google’s Tensor-powered Pixel 6 lineup around the corner, we can expect Google to start marketing its first foldable soon.

The Pokémon Card Game is heading to mobile and desktop

The Pokémon Company International has unveiled its new Pokémon Trading Card game app. Officially named Pokémon TCG Live, this free-to-play game will be available on Android, iOS, PC, and Macs.

The launch comes as part of The Pokémon Company’s 25th Pokémon anniversary celebrations. Oddly, though, Pokémon cards didn’t actually come for two years after the initial launch of the game and a year after the anime and manga.

Despite launching later, that hasn’t stopped the card game’s popularity or how much people spend on a single card. In February 2021, a near-mint holographic Pikachu card sold for $375,000.

This new online experience is designed for beginners to learn to play the game, and existing players can improve and test their skills. Trainers will be able to build decks and battle each other around the world. There will also be daily quests and the ability to customize your avatar.

According to The Pokémon Company, Pokémon TCG Live releases soon on iOS and Android and on PC and Macs later this year, with an initial soft launch in Canada.

Bell partners with TikTok to power new AR painting feature

Bell Canada is joining forces with TikTok Canada on ‘Paint Portal,’ a multi-user augmented reality (AR) feature that allows users to paint their surroundings and co-create with friends in real-time.

The new feature works with TikTok’s current suite of tools and effects, including the ability to add music, text and stickers. You can then upload your 3D AR painting to the short-video platform.

According to Bell’s press release, the new AR feature works optimally when paired with a high bandwidth and low latency 5G network. Considering that Bell’s 5G connection is one of the fastest in Canada, the partnership makes sense.

Further, TikTok has partnered with Canadian creators Justin Hopper (@justinhopper), Kissy Duerré (@kissyduerre),  Domino Santantonio (@dominosantantonio), Dan Rodo (@danocracy) and Monika Pilon (@monikapilon) to launch #Bell5GPaintPortal, an event that starts on September 27th and will teach Tik Tok users how to make the most out of the new AR real-time painting feature.

Rogers, Telus and Bell named global leaders in 5G gaming by Opensignal

Rogers, Telus and Bell are among the best in the world at providing players reliable 5G network connections for smooth mobile gaming experiences, according to independent analytics company Opensignal.

The telecom giants each took home a “Global Leader” distinction at Opensignal’s 2021 5G Global Mobile Network Experience Awards, with all three scoring above the global average of 76.7 points out of a possible 100 in the “5G Games Experience” category.

Points are earned by measuring network conditions that affect mobile gaming for players, such as “latency, packet loss and jitter.”

Among the Canadian carriers, Rogers led with 86.4 points, followed closely by Telus with 83 and Bell with 83.5.

The seven winners in the “5G Games Experience” category were South Korea’s KT, SK Telecom and LG U+, the Netherlands’ T-Mobile and KPN, Singapore’s Singtel, and Ireland’s Vodafone.

Rogers, Telus and Bell were also recognized in the “Games Experience — 5G Global Impact” category, which measures the improvement in games experience between a carrier’s 5G network versus its 4G network.

In this category, Rogers came out ahead of its Canadian competitors, with Opensignal noting a 17.2 percent improvement between the carrier’s 5G vs. 4G gaming experience, while Telus (13.8 percent) and Bell (13.4 percent) were once again closely ranked.

For context, the global average score for the “Games Experience — 5G Global Impact” category is only 8.2 percent.

Still, “5G Games Experience” and “Games Experience” were the sole categories in which Canada-based telecom companies were recognized.

The other seven categories — with no Canadian winners — were “5G Availability,” “5G Download Speed,” “5G Upload Speed,” “5G Video Experience,” “Download Speed,” “Upload Speed,” and “Video Experience.”

To see if your own 5G internet service is up to snuff, Opensignal released an app in May 2021 that lets users independently check whether they’re actually connected to a 5G network.

The A15 Bionic is faster on iPhone 13 than new iPad mini

Both the new iPad mini and Apple’s iPhone 13 series all use relatively the same A15 Bionic chipset, but it’s now come to light that the iPhones are actually more powerful than the tablet.

The iPad mini and the iPhone 13 Pro series all have a 5 core GPU unit as opposed to a 4-core version in the regular iPhone 13. That being said, it looks like Apple has clocked down the chip inside the new tiny tablet.

The tablet’s CPU clocks in at 2.9 GHz while the iPhone 13 Pro has a speed of 3.2 GHz, according to some Geekbench benchmark tests. The tests say that the difference between the devices is two to eight percent, so this may just be a margin of error found in testing.

It will be interesting to see if iPad mini users notice the lower clock speed once the device actually makes it into people’s hands later this month. The chip is still faster than Apple’s A14 Bionic from last year so it should still be plenty quick enough for most everyday tasks.

You can learn more about the iPad mini by reading our prior coverage and stay tuned to MobileSyrup for a full review coming soon.

The newest Roku device is a revamped Streaming Stick 4K

The new Roku Streaming Stick 4K is a revamped Streaming Stick+ from 2018 with a faster processor, better Wi-Fi and a new slimmer design.

Specifically, the device is 30 percent faster, while the Wi-Fi should reach further and connect to faster speeds, says Roku. In terms of picture quality updates, the new stick has support for Dolby Vision and HDR10+, so it’s up to modern standards and can compete with the best offers from Google and Amazon.

This stick also comes with the Roku Voice remote, which means that it will also be a universal remote and can control your TV’s volume and power. Plus, you can hold down a microphone button on the remote to use voice controls to find content quickly. With RokuOS 10.5, you can also search for content from apps and use the mic to type passwords letter-by-letter.

Overall, the Roku Streaming Stick 4K sits at the top of the Roku lineup in Canada in terms of video quality, but it’s not as expensive as the Streambar. The new Streaming Stick 4K costs $70 in Canada. The device is going to be exclusive to Best Buy until 2022.

RokuOS 10.5

To start off, Roku is updating its mobile app alongside the TV operating system to work better with Bluetooth headphones. In the new update, you can tweak the timing of the audio to reduce the delay between the audio and video. This is a really welcome change for people who listen to their TV quietly at night and it works both manually or by scanning the video with the camera on your phone.

Also, in the app, you can save movies and shows to your watchlist so you can find them quickly when you get back on the TV.

Beyond that, you can now use voice search to find music and podcasts on Roku OS, which is handy when you want lots of people to share the music selection.

The new update will roll out gradually to Roku devices in the coming weeks.
