Lucky, Chatr and Public offering 2GB bonus data until September 22

Lucky, Chatr and Public, the three value carrier flanker brands, are running a ‘Flash Sale’ offering 2GB of bonus data on select plans.

iPhone in Canada first spotted the offers, all of which expire on September 22nd. It’s important to note, however, that Lucky and Chatr only offer the bonus data for six months, while Public will apply it “for as long as you’re with us.”

Let’s start with Bell’s Lucky Mobile. Lucky will apply a 2GB per month data bonus of up to six months. The offer is only applicable to new activations on a minimum $35 per month plan. Although the offer ends on September 22nd, Lucky notes in the fine print that customers who order online have until October 19th to activate their SIM and redeem the offer.

Finally, Lucky notes that the offer isn’t available at some retail partners, like Dollarama and Giant Tiger.

You can learn more about Lucky’s offer here.

Next up is Rogers’ Chatr. Like Lucky, Chatr offers a 2GB data bonus on plans starting at $35 per month. The bonus data lasts for six months and is only applicable for new applications. Moreover, Chatr warns that the bonus will expire if an account becomes inactive or the customer changes their plan before six months.

You can learn more about Chatr’s offer here.

Finally, Telus’ Public Mobile only offers the 2GB bonus on $35+ plans and only for new customers who activate online. Customers must use the promo code 2GBBONUS during activation to get the bonus data.

As mentioned up top, Public says that customers can keep the bonus data as long as they stay with the carrier, although in the fine print notes that the bonus will expire for inactive accounts or when customers change their rate plan.

Those interested can learn more about Public’s offer here.

The iPhone 13 batteries on average 13 percent larger than iPhone 12 series

We now know how much bigger the iPhone 13 series’ batteries are compared to the iPhone 12 line.

The information comes courtesy of a product information sheet on the website of hazardous material information company Chemtrec (spotted by 9to5Mac). According to that document, which contains information sourced from Apple directly, the iPhone 13 batteries are on average 13 percent larger, with the 13 Pro Max now giving the Nintendo Switch a run for its wattage money.

The Chemtrec document lists the battery sizes in watt-hours (Wh) rather than milliamp-hours (mAh). The Verge notes that most manufacturers use mAh, but Wh is typically a more accurate measurement and better way to compare battery life.

You can view the battery breakdown below:

The Verge also pointed out a few interesting changes and listed the Wh battery measurement of some other popular devices.

Starting with the changes, the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro have different battery sizes, while the 12 and 12 Pro had the same size. Also of note is that the 13 Pro’s battery is smaller than the iPhone 13.

That may be because of the additional hardware in the iPhone 13 Pro — it’s got an extra camera, GPU core and a 120Hz display packed into the same size body as the iPhone 13. In other words, it makes sense that the 13 Pro has a slightly smaller battery.

As for how the iPhone 13 stacks up to other devices, here are the Wh measurements of some other popular devices (via iFixit):

Considering that Apple made the expanded battery capacity of the iPhone 13 line a significant selling point in its event, I’m glad the company also backed up the claims with numbers. Now, we just need to see if the claims hold up in real-world testing — something we should learn once reviewers start testing the phones.

Expect to see at least one 60Hz display in the iPhone 14 series

Next year’s Apple iPhone 14 series will still include at least one model with a 60Hz display, according to a report from The Elec shared by MacRumors.

For context, the freshly-launched iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are both equipped with LTPO OLED displays capable of supporting refresh rates of up to 120Hz.

However, The Elec claims that Apple still plans to use an LTPS OLED display in its iPhone 14 lineup, which means that at least one of the four expected models could sport a 60Hz display.

The decision to bring the iPad Pro’s ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate to the California tech giant’s phone series is a long-overdue one.

The first Android smartphone with a 120Hz display launched in back 2017, as the official Samsung U.S. Twitter account was happy to remind people.

With the iPhone 14 series announcement still a year away, Canadians hoping to snatch up an iPhone 13 with a 120Hz display will have to sit tight for now, as shipping dates for the Pro and Pro Max models have been pushed to late October.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 CAD renders surface showing familiar design

Samsung’s Tab A-series aren’t the company’s flagship devices, but they still offer a tablet form factor, pretty good specs and a reasonable price. The latest leak from the well-known Steve Hemmerstoffer and 91Mobiles is giving us our best look at Samsung’s upcoming Tab A8.

The leakers shared CAD-based renders and a few specs about the upcoming device.

The device reportedly will offer a similar design to its predecessor with a metal body and thick bezels around the screen. There’s also a single 8-megapixel rear-facing camera on the back, as well as a volume rocker and fingerprint sensor on the side.

The tablet features a 10.4-inch screen with an FHD+ resolution, four speakers with Dolby Atmos, a 3.5mm headphone jack, optional LTE connectivity.

The Galaxy Tab A8 will also ship with Android 11 and One UI 3.1 out of the box.

Ford increasing production for F-150 Lightning electric truck

Ford is investing an extra $250 million USD (roughly $318 million CAD) to boost production and add more electric vehicle-related (EV) jobs to its production facilities.

The automaker says that this investment will add a total of 450 jobs and bring Ford’s Lightning production capacity up to 80,000 per year. This seems like a nice amount of trucks, but since the company is sitting on over 130,000 pre-orders, it will be over a year before everyone who wants one gets one.

The first trucks should start rolling out to consumers and dealerships in the spring of 2022.

These numbers are nothing to scoff at and Ford getting into the electric truck game is a big deal, but these stats illustrate how small the EV market actually is for the automaker. For comparison, Ford sold 900,000 F-150 trucks on average every year before the pandemic.

Over the next few years, with  Tesla, Rivian, GM and Ford all releasing electric trucks, it will be interesting to see what company becomes the next major North American truck supplier.

Spend $50 on a PlayStation Store Gift Card, get $7.50 in PC Points back

You can get 7,500 PC Optimum Points for buying a $50 PlayStation Store Gift Card, effectively cutting the cost of the gift card down to $42.50.

Shared by RedFlagDeals user ‘ryan0462,’ who discovered the promotion on the PC Optimum app, the screenshot states the offer is exclusively available in Your Independent Grocer only.

Further, the screenshot states that the “offer applies to every $50 spent on PlayStation gift cards per transaction,” implying that there is no limit, and you can claim 7,500 points for every $50 PlayStation Store gift card that you purchase.

While the post states that it is an exclusive Independent promotion, users have commented under ‘ryan0462’s’ post that they have the same offer available at No Frills, Loblaws and Valu-Mart. If I were to guess, the offer is available across all President’s Choice retail banners, including Shoppers Drug Mart.

It’s worth noting that the promotion is valid in-store only until September 22nd.
