Some Canadian Pixel owners are getting access to the ‘Hold for Me’ preview

Last October, Google rolled out ‘Hold for Me’ on the Pixel 5 and 4a 5G as a preview in the U.S. Now, it looks like the feature is rolling out to some Canadian Pixel owners.

Several members of the MobileSyrup team saw the Hold for Me feature pop-up on their Pixel phones, and according to a Reddit thread, other Canadian Pixel owners have seen the feature pop-up over the last week. Judging by what both Redditors and MobileSyrup team members have said, it appears that you need to be running both the Android 12 beta and the latest Google Phone app beta to get Hold for Me.

However, having both of those isn’t a guarantee you’ll get the feature. For example, across MobileSyrup’s Pixel 4, 4a, 4a 5G and 3 all running the Android 12 beta and all with Phone app version ‘70.0.394259711-publicbeta.’ However, only the Pixel 3 and 4a 5G have the Hold for Me feature. Additionally, another team member with a Pixel 4a on Android 11 doesn’t have the feature, while Redditors who reported having it said they had the Pixel 4 XL.

MobileSyrup has reached out to Google Canada about the apparent Hold for Me rollout.

If you meet the conditions and are also blessed by Google, you should see a pop-up detailing Hold for Me next time you open the Google Phone app. It looks like the screenshot above and features the following description:

“Hold for Me can wait for you when some of the places you call put you on hold. Your phone will ring when someone’s ready to talk to you. Hold for Me temporarily records your call and is available for only English-language calls. Go to Settings to learn more or turn off this experimental feature.”

If you don’t see the pop-up, you can tap the three-dot menu button in the top-right corner > Settings > look for ‘Hold for Me’ under the ‘Assistive’ heading at the top of the menu. You can turn the feature on or off from there.

Those interested can learn more about how Hold for Me works by checking out MobileSyrup’s previous coverage.

Google Keep’s Material You makeover will start rolling out on September 21

Probably one of my favourite apps, Google Keep, is getting its Material You makeover on September 21st.

From the looks of it, the search bar will be rounded out. Additionally, the notes will offer colours that are not as bright and vibrant and will be a bit more muted.

The new create note button will be square-shaped now, instead of circular. The bottom bar is also more obvious this time around. With ‘Dynamic Color’ on, the app’s background will match the wallpaper on your device.

According to Google’s Workspace blog, the update will start rolling out on September 21st with app version 5.21.361.

This is ahead of the final release of Android 12, which is rumoured to go online starting early October.

Apple’s new iPad mini features 4GB of RAM and is likely the second fasted iPad

It’s come to light that the new iPad mini features 4GB of RAM, indicating that it’s likely Apple’s second fasted iPad behind the M1 iPad Pro.

For context, the previous iPad mini only included 3GB of RAM. This is the same amount of RAM still featured in the base-level iPad that Apple just refreshed alongside the new mini.

I should clarify that we haven’t tested the new mini yet, so we can’t say for certain that it’s faster than the iPad Air. Still, it’s a pretty safe assumption considering both tablets include the same amount of RAM, the mini comes equipped with Apple’s newer A15 Bionic chipset, and it features a smaller screen with fewer pixels.

This should be more than enough RAM for performing pretty much everything, including high-end mobile gaming on the go. It’s worth noting that this is also the same amount of RAM featured in the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 13.

You can find out more about the new iPad mini by reading our prior coverage. Stay tuned to MobileSyrup.com for a full review of the tiny tablet in the coming weeks.

Fitbit’s ‘Snore & Noise Detect’ feature rolling out to Sense, Versa 3 watches

Fitbit’s Sense and Versa 3 smartwatches are getting a new ‘Snore & Noise Detect’ sleep tracking capability.

As reported by 9to5Google, the feature works exactly as it sounds. When enabled, the Sense or Versa 3 wearable will use the built-in microphone to detect and analyze noise and volume.

According to the Fitbit app, Snore & Noise Detect will use the microphone once it detects the wearer is asleep. It uses the microphone to “sample, measure and collect information about the noise in your environment.” The sampling occurs every few seconds and collects information about noise level and how loud the wearer’s environment is, as well as snoring events and how often it detects snores.

In the morning, users will receive a ‘snore report’ in the Sleep section of the Fitbit app.

Fitbit Snore & Noise Detect

The feature reportedly hits the battery fairly hard, with Fitbit recommending smartwatches have at least 40 percent charge before going to bed. Some commenters on 9to5 noted the battery life dropped quite significantly with the feature enabled.

It’s also worth noting you’ll need a Fitbit Premium subscription to access Snore & Noise Detect. If you are a subscriber, you can turn on the feature by going to the Sleep section in the Fitbit app and looking for a ‘Check for snoring’ card. Tap ‘Learn more’ then read through the instructions and privacy notice — you’ll need to agree to the privacy details before you can turn on the feature.

256GB iPhone SE option mysteriously disappears from the Apple Store

Shortly after revealing the iPhone 13 series, the iPad mini and the iPad during its ‘California streaming’ event, Apple quietly removed the highest-tier storage capacity option for the iPhone SE.

Previously, the iPhone 13 was available in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB storage options. However now, only 64GB and 128GB iPhone SE storage variants are listed in the Apple Store.

It’s unclear why Apple opted to get rid of the 256GB storage option, but it likely has something to do with it ramping down production in preparation for the possible launch of a new iPhone SE at some point in 2022.

The 64GB iPhone SE costs $569 and the 128GB version costs $639. For more on Apple’s iPhone SE, check out my review of the smartphone from back in April 2020.

AppleCare+ now covers iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 back glass breaking for $39

If you’re the type of person who drops their iPhone 13 or iPhone 12 device a lot and refuses to use a screen protector or a case, this is definitely good news.

AppleCare+, Apple’s extended warranty program, now covers two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months. Apple says that each incident includes a service fee of $39, but the key new update is that “screen or back glass damage” is included.

“AppleCare+ for iPhone extends your coverage and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage protection every 12 months. Each incident is subject to a service fee of $39 for screen or back glass damage, or $129 for any other damage, plus applicable tax,” writes Apple.

Prior to this change, cracked or damaged back glass replacements cost in the range of $100. AppleCare+ costs $199 or $9.99 per month.

  • $249 or $12.49/month for iPhone XS/iPhone XS Max

iPhone 13 series has the same amount of RAM as the iPhone 12 line

Apple doesn’t usually advertise the amount of RAM in its new iPhones, but there are other ways of figuring it out.

MacRumors used the beta of Apple’s Xcode 13 platform to confirm that the iPhone 13 line sports the same amount of RAM as last year’s iPhone 12 models. That means the iPhone 13 and 13 mini sport 4GB of RAM, and the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max offer 6GB of RAM.

While Android users might scoff at the amount of RAM on offer, it’s worth keeping in mind that different operating systems can use RAM differently. That’s not to say one is better than the other. However, from experience, I can say that the iPhone XS I’ve had on my desk for years sports 4GB of RAM and still does an excellent job with app retention and multitasking.

Coupled with the new A15 Bionic chip, there’s plenty of power in the iPhone 13 line. Apple didn’t get into details about how the A15 compares to last year’s A14 Bionic, but we do know that it runs on TSMC’s advanced 5nm+ process and sports a new 5-core GPU in the Pro models.

Also like the iPhone 12, the iPhone 13 line doesn’t support mmWave 5G in Canada. That shouldn’t be a deal-breaker for most since Canadian carriers also don’t offer mmWave 5G, but it’s worth noting that U.S. iPhone 13 devices do support mmWave.

As with most tech, we’ll need to wait until reviewers go hands-on with the new iPhones before we get a real picture of how much better the 13 series is than the 12 models. Pre-orders for the new iPhones will kick off on September 17th at 8am ET/5am PT, and the devices will launch on September 24th.

Those interested can learn more about the iPhone 13 (and other new Apple products) pricing here or pre-register for carrier pre-orders here.
