Google updated its U.S. Store site with a new Pixel 6 Pro render on Apple day

All the news has been absolutely dominated by the iPhone 13 announcement today, but if you’re in the market for some non-Apple smartphone news, perhaps I can interest you in this Pixel 6 Pro pic.

Google updated its Store page for the upcoming Pixel 6 and 6 Pro to show off the ‘Silver’ colour of the Pixel 6 Pro (pictured above). It’s also among the first official renders of the front of the Pixel 6 Pro that Google has provided. If you head to the Google Store to see the change, you’ll need to switch to the U.S. version — the Canadian version doesn’t show the new render.

The render doesn’t really show us anything we don’t already know, but it’s neat to see how thin the bezels are on the Pixel 6 Pro. Additionally, you can see the curved display edges, the centred hole-punch camera cut out and — oddly — what looks like a strip of colour along the top edge of the phone.

Moreover, Google’s new render attempts to highlight Android 12’s Material You dynamic theming. The personalization features of Android 12 seem to be really important for Google, which also highlighted them in its first Pixel 6 teaser trailer.

While not the biggest reveal, I do like to see a little bit more of the Pixel 6 Pro. I’m rather excited about Google’s upcoming smartphone line and I’m excited to see more when it launches sometime (presumably) next month.

Oh, and Google apparently threw some shade at Apple via its old ‘@googlenexus’ Twitter account, although I can’t view the actual post since it’s a private account.

Bell joins Quebecor, TekSavvy in opposing Rogers/Shaw merger

Bell has reportedly joined the chorus of voices renouncing fellow telecom giant Rogers’ acquisition of Shaw Communications, according to a filing obtained by The Globe and Mail.

In the filing, which was submitted to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, Bell allegedly argues that the takeover would give Rogers control over nearly half of the country’s English-language television distribution market, including cable, satellite and internet.

Announced in March 2021, the Rogers/Shaw merger is valued at a whooping $26 billion, including debt, and is currently under review by Canada’s Competition Bureau.

While the deal is already signed, the purchase still needs to be approved by federal regulators — a task that has proven difficult as telecom carriers and industry experts alike are vocally warning that the acquisition will quash competition and lead to higher prices for consumers.

Analysts are suggesting that the deal might be allowed to go through if Rogers evens the scales by divesting itself of Shaw’s wireless properties, Freedom Mobile and Shaw Mobile.

Bell’s official stance against the merger is interesting, given that the company made — and later withdrew — its own offer to buy Shaw prior to Rogers sealing the deal.

The public hearing for the Rogers/Shaw acquisition is scheduled for November 22nd, 2021.

Apple’s new iPhone 13 line vs. last year’s iPhone 12 series: worth the upgrade?

Apple hosted its September product event on September 14th where it unveiled the new iPhone 13 line-up.

There are a bunch of new features and changes, but as usual, we’ll also see a price drop on older iPhone models. If you’re in the market for an upgrade, it may be worth comparing the iPhone 13 and 12 lines to see if the new features are worth the extra money, or if you can scoop up an older model for less.

Let’s start with the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max. Perhaps the biggest upgrade with these over the 12 Pro and Pro Max is the new 120Hz ProMotion display. The higher refresh rate should make the 13 Pros feel much smoother than before, especially when scrolling or gaming. An added benefit of the adaptive refresh rate is it can scale down to 10Hz when you’re not interacting with the phone to reduce battery consumption.

Other improvements include Apple’s more powerful A15 Bionic chip, a larger battery and improved 5G. Apple also talked up the improve cameras, with a focus on macro photography and ‘Cinematic Mode.’

As for the iPhone 13 and 13 mini, Apple’s more affordable iPhones also sport the new A15, offer longer battery life and improved cameras. The non-Pro iPhone 13 models gained the sensor shift tech from last year’s iPhone 12 Pro line, which should help with low-light performance. Unfortunately, neither the iPhone 13 or 13 mini have 120Hz displays, which is a bummer.

Oh, and perhaps most important of all, all the new iPhones have about 20 percent smaller notches. Apple hasn’t gone for a hole-punch camera cut-out or under-display tech yet, but hey, I’ll take any notch reduction I can get.

Really, whether or not the new iPhones are worth it over last year’s models comes down to what you care about in a phone. If you want the absolute cutting-edge camera performance, the 13 Pro phones are for you. Similarly, if high refresh-rate displays are something you care about, the 13 Pro devices will be your best option. If you’re more interested in getting a good deal, or don’t really care about the camera or refresh rate, you may be better off saving some money and picking up a discounted iPhone 12.

If you’re interested, you can learn more about the iPhone 13 Pros here and the regular iPhone 13 models here.

What was that song at the beginning of the Apple event?

Apple kicked off their September 14th product event with a dramatic musical number — complete with violins, desert vistas, and copious drone shots — featuring a lively cover of a funk-soul classic.

The song is “California Soul” by Marlena Shaw, an American jazz vocalist legend known best for her work in the 1960s-70s.

Today, at the age of 78, Shaw is still actively performing and recording music.

In the lead-up to the event, Apple released teaser images stamped with the phrase “California Dreaming”, a riff on the 1966 song “California Dreamin’” by The Mamas & The Papas.

Apple introduces Cinematic Mode with the new iPhone 13 lineup

At its annual event, dubbed ‘California Streaming’ for this year, Apple unveiled its new iPhone 13 with a diagonal dual-camera setup, a sleek, flat-edged design similar to the iPhone 12 lineup, a bigger battery along 28 percent brighter Super Retina XDR displays.

Apple says the iPhone 13 and 13 mini will incorporate last year’s iPhone 12 Pro Max’s Sensor-Shift Camera Stabilization tech along with new video capabilities, including a new Cinematic Mode.

The new mode features rack focus and will be useful for content creators or filmmakers. The mode recognizes when a person enters the frame or when your subject is facing the camera and when not and accordingly blurs and focuses the background.

More to come…

Apple brings more features to Apple fitness+ and adds group workouts

Not to be outdone by the new Apple Watch, iPads or iPhones, Apple also shared some updates to its fitness program, Apple Fitness+.

Apple has added some more workout times that go all the way down to five minutes, plus there are new filters to sort workouts within the app. You can also pause a workout on one device and resume it on another.

There are also more targeted workouts for people who want to get ready for winter sports like skiing and snowboarding. Alongside this, Apple is still creating new Time to Walk episodes and new Pilates workouts.

The biggest change is called Group Workouts that work on the SharePlay system so you and your friends can all work out together remotely.
