“Women exist elsewhere than in your eyes”.

As a new social movement gathers momentum, Rosalie Bonenfant took the time to set the record straight on the unfounded intentions some people attribute to women.

It was following unsolicited comments with a misogynistic flavour under a post by Léa Clermont-Dion on social network X that the tone was raised. She took advantage of the situation to share a few screenshots in a photo carousel on her Instagram account.

The comments were under her professional photo of the author. In this one, she’s facing the lens, lips parted and head cocked to one side. This pose was enough for several men to lend her seductive intentions, a sort of sexual invitation of some kind.

https://www.instagram.com/p/DAjhXcNpHXt/?hl=fr-ca&img_index=2

Seizing the moment, Rosalie Bonenfant reminded everyone that “women exist elsewhere than in your eyes”, referring to men.

“A woman who fits Western beauty standards isn’t necessarily more seductive than others just because you might feel seduced by looking at her. Similarly, a fat woman doesn’t necessarily promote obesity or curse thinness by simply existing in a fat body. An educated woman who affirms her convictions isn’t necessarily more prudish or less sexual than another simply because you haven’t learned to desire an unsubmissive being. A woman who expresses an opinion doesn’t necessarily expect to be validated or applauded by a boy (…) It’s time to start conceiving that women exist elsewhere than in your eyes.”

She continues on her Instagram carousel:

“How you feel about us is none of our business or interest. We certainly won’t need your guidelines to circumscribe how we act. We’re confident enough to come out with brilliant essays and assume that the public won’t be put off reading us if we have the added nerve to be pretty. (…) That said, don’t worry too much about it, when we varlope you, it’s always with our mouths open and our heads tilted, just in case you catch a glimpse of us.”

These last words, on a note both amusing and provocative, refer to the #boucheouverte movement launched on social networks.

https://www.instagram.com/p/DAlQ52FR6vW/?img_index=1

The movement has spread like wildfire across the Québécois media landscape. A number of public figures and even private citizens have posted photos with the hashtag #boucheouverte in support of Léa Clermont-Dion and to demonstrate the absurdity of misogynistic comments.

While it may seem trivial, as comments made on the web go, it’s anything but. Women, whether well-known or not, are often the target of misogynistic comments, and this is a direct forward to universal rights which, we remind you, clearly state that everyone has the right to live free from violence and discrimination.

On that note, we invite you to join the movement by taking a snapshot of yourself with your mouth open and your head to one side, because, no, this isn’t a seductive invitation.

Misogyny still rages on social networks and many denounce it

Despite constant interventions, open denunciations in stories and reports on the subject, we have to admit that many people still haven’t learned how to behave civically on the Internet. These people hide behind their screens to indulge in comments, even very violent and unrestrained insults that they wouldn’t make in person. And well-known personalities are easy victims for these trolls, who are shamelessly rampant on social networks. Women are prime targets for these trolls, who don’t hesitate to go out of their way to gratuitously belittle them.

Geneviève Pettersen gave a good example of this recently during one of her 98.5 FM programs. The author and lover of Pierre-Yves McSween shared one of the worst messages she received following a segment where she and Frédéric Labelle were discussing Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante ‘s decision to block comments on certain platforms.

Geneviève went on to read a message she had received on Facebook. She warns listeners first, and we do the same. The next few passages may shock some.

“And here I apologize, listeners, it’s very very raw and it took me two days to get over it. It’s not a joke. You’re an est* de grosse c*nne, I wish you death my dirty old t*rche. You don’t deserve anything you got. You should shut your big ugly dirty mouth. I can’t believe you give yourself the right to speak. I hope you get beaten to death, you old hag. How dare you speak when you’re such a c*nne? (…) Karma will catch up with you and I hope for the worst of the worst of the bad. I want to see you run over by a garbage truck and get beaten up a thousand times, like you say, once isn’t enough. I wish you to be v**led to death (…)”.

Her co-host then asked if she’d pressed charges, to which she replied that she’d stopped doing so, but that yes, it was indeed the type of message for which she could have gone to the police.

https://www.instagram.com/p/C_1h9bOsOIE/

Here is the message in full:

Some celebrities reacted to the host’s post, like Kim Lizotte and Manal Drissi, in turn sharing their views on the violence of online comments and messages.

Kim shared Geneviève‘s audio segment, accompanied by a screenshot of a comment received under one of her videos. It reads: “Crazy nasty cr*ss! She knows f*ck all. She’s a wannabe comedian. Get out of your echo chamber est* de folle. Nobody means what you say! Ast* de folle du cal*ce”.

In support of the women who are victims of this gratuitous nastiness, she raises a simple question: But why?

“In support of all the women in the public sphere who experience it regularly. It’s normalized, trivialized, but that’s what it is. We tolerate it and we carry on. But why?” she wonders about the violence experienced on various platforms that, presumably, fail to filter assaults.

In turn, Manal Drissi raised the issue. She returned to her most recent experience on Facebook, at the unveiling of the trailer for a collaborative project with Gabrielle Lisa Collard.

https://www.instagram.com/p/C_s2yRWxtgZ/

The simple unveiling of her series in development provoked a wave of nasty comments on Facebook. In response to these and to Geneviève‘s post, she made a point of reminding us what it means to be a woman or a marginalized individual in the public sphere. The mayor of the Côte-des-Neige-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough, Gracia Kasoki Katahwa, also knows something about this.

For your information, here’s some background on what the mayor of this Montreal borough has experienced:

This is all happening here in Quebec, but misogyny is everywhere. For more information and to see the extent of the damage it causes, we invite you to watch the documentary Je vous salue salope by Léa Clermont-Dion and Guylaine Maroist.

Drug ad featuring Serena Williams is misleading, says FDA

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) recently sent a letter expressing its dissatisfaction with a TV commercial featuring tennis player Serena Williams, stating that it contains several claims that are misleading to the public.

According to the FDA, the misleading ad depicts tennis champion Serena Williams suffering from a severe migraine attack and light sensitivity in her locker room.

Shortly afterwards, however, she is shown laughing and smiling. Then she appears enthusiastically, walking a blue path through the stage curtains and waving to the audience.

Meanwhile, a voiceover claims that the drug quickly eliminates migraine pain, while on-screen text states that Ubrelvy quickly relieves migraine pain.

Getty Images

The FDA argues that, although Ubrelvy offers a significant therapeutic benefit to migraine sufferers, the advertising gives a misleading impression of its actual efficacy.

The FDA highlights two major concerns in its explanations: the speed at which the migraine drug works and the implication in the advertising that migraine symptoms, (such as pain but also photophobia, phonophobia and nausea) will disappear completely after taking the drug.

Getty Images

The FDA stresses the importance of accuracy in drug advertising, claiming that Ubrelvy’s efficacy is exaggerated in the ad with Serena Williams.

According to the FDA, Ubrelvy reportedly takes around two hours to work, contrary to what is suggested in the ad, and around 78% to 81% of patients fail to achieve complete pain relief after a single dose, according to clinical studies.

Getty Images

Finally, in addition to misleading about the two-hour onset of action, the claim that “one dose eliminates migraine pain” is also misleading, as only around 19% to 22% of patients were pain-free two hours after taking one dose of Ubrelvy.

Lysandre Nadeau unrecognizable at a fashion show

Lysandre Nadeau shares content daily on her social networks, mostly related to motherhood or her two podcasts Sexe Oral and Parenthèses.

However, it wasn’t for any of these reasons that she was in the news this weekend. In fact, the mom took to the catwalk during the M.A.D. Festival and was completely unrecognizable!

Long mega-voluminous hair in shades of pink and green, green tulle dress adorned with goldfish, white knee-high socks and furry sandals; a delightful extravaganza for Lakuachimoto‘s Goldfish collection.

She also wore a different hairstyle, a wet look that suited her perfectly.

In addition to dressing Lysandre, the promising young Montreal designer has already dressed Gisèle Lullaby and even Nelly Furtado. He also created the unique piece worn by Janette Bertrand on the cover of Elle Québec.

Here’s how to recreate Camila Cabello’s streetwear look

Singer Camila Cabello has a rather scattered style history. She’s been searching for her style for a long time, but in recent years she’s leaned towards streetwear looks that suit her perfectly.

Referencing the 2000s, Camila’s style has evolved enormously, and to this day, her style has never been more considered.

Getty Images

As for this one, the references mix between the 2000s and the flared pants trend of 2024. So here’s how to replicate the look at a more affordable price.

Its top offers a very contemporary and trendy style, it seems to be a corset inspired by the details of a suit vest.

So, to imitate it, this open-back vest for $49.00 at Simons, thanks to its cut, V-neck and buttons, is perfect for reproducing the star’s top.

simons.ca

For the pants, you’ll need to find a pair of very flared faded jeans, and you’re in luck, because it’s this kind of pant that’s currently available just about everywhere!

This pair from Cider has a style, color and cut very similar to the singer’s, and retails for just $39.00.

shopcider.com

As for the shoes, since they’re not very visible, we can imagine that she’s wearing high heels to lengthen her legs and prevent the pants from dragging too much on the floor.

Her toes are slightly visible and the color is silver, which is why this $125.00 pair from Steve Madden is perfect for reproducing this look.

stevemadden.ca

When it comes to accessories, glasses once again reference the popular trend of the early 2000s, when slim, rectangular frames were in fashion.

Detailed at $19.99 on Amazon, this pair perfectly reflects the style worn by the pop star.

amazon.ca

For the handbag, a simple black leather shoulder bag will do. On the other hand, for a similar style, it’s best to find a bag from the 2000s at a thrift store, for example, where the bags have been around a long time, and therefore have a more vintage look for not too much money either.

In case you’d rather have a new one, this one from Revolve is $135.92, and it’s perfect to complete the ensemble.

revolve.com

If this kind of style appeals to you and you like to follow trends, don’t hesitate to buy these items for streetwear, fashion and comfort!
