Top-5: Brad Marchand attempted to strangle Nick Cousin with his hand

There was a lot of action in the NHL last night.

The Canadiens lost to the Red Wings, but there were also 10 other games taking place across the league.

Here’s a summary of what caught attention:

1 : Brad Marchand Looks Crazy… Once Again

Brad Marchand loves to be talked about for the wrong reasons.

And let’s say this has been going on for a while!

The Bruins’ captain looked crazy again last night because he made a move that doesn’t belong on the ice.

He attempted to choke Nick Cousins with his hand:

Crazy Marchand…

The worst part is that he wasn’t even penalized for the incident!

In the game between the Bruins and the Sens, this hit by Brady Tkachuk on Andrew Peeke also stood out.

The glass shattered so hard that the impact was solid:

The Bruins ultimately won the game 2-0.

Morgan Geekie and David Pastrnak (empty net) scored for Boston.

Jonas Korpisalo was solid in net, stopping all 29 shots directed at him. This is his third shutout of the season:

2 : Anthony Richard is Lucky

Things happen so quickly in hockey that sometimes, accidents can occur.

Just ask Anthony Richard.

The former Canadiens player got lucky when he took K’Andre Miller’s skate to the face: Richard almost got cut by his opponent’s skate while he was down on the ice.

It was close, but Richard managed to finish the game:

Nothing worked for the Flyers against the Rangers last night.

The Philadelphia team lost 6-1 and that goal perfectly sums up the evening for the Flyers:

3 : Speaking of the Rangers…

We know: the Rangers had very, very difficult moments before Christmas.

But now… It seems like everything is coming together for the New York team.

The victory against the Flyers last night allows the team to claim a 7th win in 10 games and it’s worth noting that since January 1st, the Rangers have the best record in the entire NHL.

Everything is working right now over there… And it oddly coincides with Igor Shesterkin’s return to play:

There is too much talent on the team for the Rangers not to make the playoffs.

They are just one point behind the Blue Jackets for the last playoff spot and if they can keep this momentum going, things will get even more interesting in the East.

To be continued…

4 : Another Goal for Ovi!

Before the season started, few people would have predicted that the Capitals would dominate the NHL, holding the 1st spot in the league standings at the end of January.

That’s what is happening right now, and ultimately, both goalies of the team are playing a role in the team’s success.

We saw it again last night: Charlie Lindgren was perfect against the Kraken, stopping 22 shots, and the Capitals shut out the Seattle team with a 3-0 score:

At the end of the game, the Kraken pulled their goalie to attempt a comeback, but Alex Ovechkin was on the ice.

You know what that means…

The Capitals’ captain scored his 22nd goal of the season, and it was into an empty net:

Ovi is just 20 goals away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky and capturing the National Hockey League record.

At this point, it’s just a matter of time. And one wonders if he has a chance to break the record this season.

The Capitals still have 34 games left on the schedule: so it’s possible… but it will be tough anyway.

5 : The Oilers Handle the Canucks Their Way

This was a game we were looking forward to.

Why?

Because it was the first time since the Connor McDavid incident that the Oilers faced the Canucks.

Let’s just say the Edmonton team took care of the Vancouver team their way, which is by scoring a lot of goals.

After the first period, it was already 3-0 in favor of the Oilers:

The Canucks were never in the game and ultimately lost the match 6-2.

In the victory, we note the three points recorded by Zach Hyman (two goals and one assist) and Leon Draisaitl (one goal and two assists).

It wasn’t too rough contrary to what one might think, but there was a sequence in the game where we saw both clubs sending messages:

The Oilers lost their first game (out of three) in McDavid’s absence earlier this week, but they won the second.

They should be able to win the third and final game during their captain’s suspension because the Sabres will be on the menu tomorrow.

The match will be held in Edmonton.

The Canadiens suffer their first defeat against the Red Wings this season.

Three players from the Canadiens reached an important milestone during Thursday’s game against the Red Wings. Brendan Gallagher played his 800th game in the NHL, while it was the 500th for Patrik Laine and Christian Dvorak.

Michael Pezzetta also made a return to the lineup.

Montreal may have won the first two meetings between the two teams this season, but one shouldn’t expect it to be an easy game.

Here is the Canadiens’ lineup:

And here is the Red Wings’ lineup:

The Tricolore completely fell apart in the first period. The Canadiens players managed to take just four shots on the Red Wings’ net during the entire period.

The worst part is that Detroit was able to direct 17 shots towards Samuel Montembeault’s net. It’s simply crazy.

In comparison, the Capitals had taken 17 shots against the Canadiens in their last meeting and there was an overtime!

Faced with such an onslaught, Montembeault eventually faltered. Jonatan Berggren opened the scoring midway through the period.

Then, at the end of the period, the Red Wings took advantage of a power play to double their lead. Montembeault completely bit on the passing fake, which allowed Alex DeBrincat to score into an empty net, just a few seconds after Kirby Dach’s penalty ended.

The first 20 minutes of this game were certainly forgettable for the Canadiens, who headed to the locker room down 2-0.

The Canadiens’ power play has been doing quite well this season. However, they made a serious mistake by allowing Andrew Copp to get away.

The Red Wings thus led by three goals.

The good news for the Canadiens is that they managed to stem the bleeding with their first goal of the game.

Christian Dvorak was convinced he scored in his 500th NHL game, but it was ultimately Kirby Dach who opened the scoring for Montreal.

Detroit was eventually able to regain a three-goal lead. Dylan Larkin took advantage of a gift from Montembeault to score on the power play.

Montembeault really didn’t have a great game.

Kaiden Guhle gave the Canadiens some hope midway through the second period. His wrist shot from the blue line found its way behind Cam Talbot.

After two periods, the Canadiens were still trailing by two goals, this time by a score of 4-2.

Every means is good to come back. Cole Caufield played long minutes in the third period, taking Michael Pezzetta’s spot on the fourth line as well as playing on the first line of the CH.

Midway through the third period, Christian Fischer was convinced he had scored a fifth goal for the Red Wings, but the officials quickly disallowed the goal because Michael Rasmussen made contact with Montembeault.

The Red Wings requested a review of the sequence, but the referees did not change their decision.

The Tricolore thus had a power play, but it was unsuccessful.

Montembeault may not have had an easy game, but his performance can be excused by the fact that the Red Wings took 45 shots on him during the game. His teammates really did not help him.

Martin St-Louis pulled Montembeault in the final minutes of the game, but Montreal was unable to score even a single goal. Juraj Slafkovsky was also penalized with about a minute left in the game, ruining the chances of a comeback.

The Red Wings thus won the game by a score of 4-2.

Lane Hutson’s streak of games with at least one point ended at nine, as he was held off the scoresheet.

The Canadiens will be back in action on Saturday, as they host Jake Allen and the Devils at the Bell Centre.

Overtime

– A scoring player for Montreal.

– Not great as a first period.

– Suzuki had stayed quiet for a while.

– Max is not a big fan of the song.

– It’s something he needs to improve.

– It was to be expected.

Laine and the Finns at the 4 Nations tournament: “We hate Sweden. There’s nothing more to say.”

So… Are you looking forward to the Four Nations Tournament?

It seems that the excitement that was in Montreal has dissipated in recent weeks, and that’s normal.

In fact, fans are more focused on the Canadiens’ season because things have been going better lately. I share the opinion of my colleague Maxime Truman, who talked about it on the radio today (BPM Sports): I would prefer the season to continue instead!

Several Canadiens players received the call to defend the colors of their respective countries for the event, including Patrik Laine.

For the record, Samuel Montembeault (Canada) and Joel Armia (Finland) will also be part of the competition.

But to return to Laine, let’s just say that the big forward is looking forward to the tournament’s opening… Because he wants his country to be able to beat its great rival, Sweden.

Laine – in an interview with the NHL – did not hide the fact that he hates the Swedes and that it is the same for the other guys from Finland:

We hate them. There’s nothing more to say about it. – Patrik Laine

It’s promising…

Patrik Laine won’t have to wait long because Finland and Sweden will face off on February 15 at the Bell Centre.

It will be Finland’s second match, which will start its tournament against the United States on February 13:

(Credit: Hockey Canada)

Things are likely to get heated between Finland and Sweden because the two countries really do not like each other.

I’m looking forward to seeing the intensity level for the match. Especially in the context where we are not talking about a regular-season encounter in the NHL.

At least, if we go by Patrik Laine’s comments… It should be a good show.

In Brief

– Me too, Bob!

– Good!

– Reminder: the Canadiens really like Jake Evans.

– That would be a nice acquisition in Toronto.

Brendan Gallagher wants to stay in Montreal after his career.

Brendan Gallagher will always be a significant player in the history of the Canadiens. His tenacity and playing style have charmed the crowd in Montreal, but the city has also charmed him since the beginning of his career.

Gallagher kicked off his 800th NHL game with the Canadiens on Thursday night against the Red Wings. This is a huge milestone that places him 21st in the entire history of the Tricolore for games played with the team.

Before starting his 800th career game, Gallagher spoke with Jean-François Chaumont from LNH.com. In this interview, he explained that he loves Montreal so much that he would like to stay there even after the end of his career.

Montreal has not only allowed Gallagher to have a remarkable career but also to find love. The number 11 of the Canadiens met Quebecer Emma Fortin a few years ago and married her this summer.

The couple is even expecting a child in the coming months. Gallagher confirmed to Chaumont that he is happy to be building a family in Montreal.

There is no doubt that Gallagher is a crowd favorite, but his game has slowed in recent years, which has made his contract worth $6.5 million per year excessive.

Some Canadiens fans would like to see his contract bought out, but that is unlikely to happen. Renaud Lavoie explained during his Thursday column on Le Club du matin on BPM Sports that he does not believe a contract buyout is in Kent Hughes’ plans.

In any case, it does not seem to slow down the Canadiens these days. Gallagher still brings a lot of grit and continues to find the back of the net from time to time.

Gallagher’s contract will expire at the end of the 2026-27 season. He will then be 34 years old. It is possible that the Canadiens will offer him a contract extension, but with a significant salary cut.

If Gallagher wants to stay in Montreal after his career, he could follow in the footsteps of Paul Byron. The former CH player has become a player development consultant for the team.

Gallagher could become an excellent mentor for the young players of the Canadiens. We would all love to see him teach his techniques on how to play with grit to the team’s prospects.

Elias Pettersson was defrauded for over $200,000.

Elias Pettersson is not having much fun lately. The situation with J.T. Miller is not very pleasant, but it’s not the only thing that could affect his good mood.

The Canucks forward lost a significant amount of money because he was defrauded during a real estate transaction in Sweden.

His father, Torjorn Pettersson, revealed to the Swedish daily Sundsvalls Tidning that his son was defrauded for a total sum of $240,000 USD.

To summarize the story, Pettersson attempted to buy a luxurious property for $2.4 million USD in the municipality of Danderyd, Sweden. To proceed with the purchase, he had to pay a deposit of $240,000 USD, but what he didn’t know was that the house had several defects.

There were multiple repairs needed on the house, which convinced Pettersson to cancel the transaction. The problem is that he was only able to cancel the mortgage by suing the real estate agent who sold him the property.

His deposit disappeared. He completely lost his money, according to his father’s statement.

It’s a sad story for Pettersson, but the good news is that the real estate agent is now in prison. He received a six-year prison sentence for another fraud case.

Pettersson has a contract worth $11.6 million per season, which makes the loss a bit less bothersome, but it remains a heavy loss that could weigh on his mind, especially as he is already going through tough times in Vancouver.

Pettersson’s father is aware that the situation is sad, but he is ready to forget everything and move on.

The Pettersson family still has another home to live in Sweden. It is a property in the city of Stockholm.

Now that this story is behind him, Pettersson must do everything to help the Canucks get back on the path to victory. Vancouver has only won two of its six games in January.

In brief

Wow.

– It’s not going to be easy.

– Interesting.

Amazon is leaving Quebec

This is a major news story reported exclusively by Radio-Canada, as the giant Amazon seems to have had enough and is closing its doors to Quebecers.

Getty Images

Indeed, Amazon is reportedly leaving Quebec entirely, according to reports by Thomas Gerbet and David Savoie, information confirmed by several sources, including the online retail giant itself, in the end.

The efforts to unionize certain warehouses are said to be the cause, which Amazon denies, however.

In fact, no less than seven distribution and delivery centers are expected to close their doors in Quebec over the next two months, no less.

The closures of the centers in Laval and Montreal are said to be confirmed.

Trump’s pardons for the rioters are worrying many, family of late hero officer of January 6 react

True to his campaign promise, Donald Trump ordered the release of all participants in the January 6th riot at the U.S. Capitol.

JUST IN: Trump says he is pardoning nearly all of the people charged or convicted with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, fulfilling one of his campaign promises.

Bloomberg (@bloomberg.com) 2025-01-21T01:13:56.499Z

He granted clemency to those who had not committed violent acts and commuted the sentences of those convicted of serious crimes, including violence, such as brutally attacking Capitol police officers, as well as conspiracy to overthrow the government.

This latter category notably includes members of the far-right organizations Proud Boys and Oath Keepers.

Getty Images

This represents a huge advantage for these criminals, some of whom, sentenced to more than 20 years, will now find themselves completely free.

Trump’s decision erases the legal consequences for the majority of the 1,590 individuals charged in connection with the riot. However, 14 individuals, including members of the far-right organizations Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, had their sentences reduced without receiving a pardon. Their actions remain recorded on their criminal record, even though they have been released from federal prisons.

Among those released is Stewart Rhodes, founder of the Oath Keepers, who was freed on January 21 after spending the last three years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Maryland.

Getty Images

It should be noted that among the 1,590 accused, 284 individuals were charged with assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers or employees, including 99 for using a deadly or dangerous weapon or causing serious injury to an officer. Additionally, 11 individuals were arrested on charges related to assaulting media members or destroying their equipment.

Approximately 860 individuals were charged with entering or remaining in a restricted federal building or grounds, including 91 for entering with a dangerous or deadly weapon. Furthermore, 59 individuals were charged with destruction of public property and 36 for theft of government property.

Getty Images

Moreover, more than 295 individuals have been charged with corrupting, obstructing, or influencing an official proceeding, or attempting to do so. Around 50 individuals have also faced charges of conspiracy, including obstruction of a congressional proceeding, impeding law enforcement during a civil disorder, conspiracy to injure an officer, or sedition conspiracy, or a combination of these offenses.

In total, over 600 individuals have been charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement during the riot, according to figures from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Getty Images

Many concerns remain about the impact of these pardons, with some fearing that they may encourage these individuals to repeat such actions in honor of Trump if a similar opportunity arises in the future.

Following the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, five people lost their lives, including Officer Brian Sicknick, who died of two strokes just hours after being injured while trying to protect the Capitol.

Getty Images

His family strongly criticized Trump’s decision, stating:

“Our family has been asked to comment on the pardoning of the rioters who sacked the Nation’s Capitol on January 6, 2021, including the man who assaulted our son with a deadly weapon, and his accomplice. There are no words that adequately describe the pain of losing Brian, and the suffering we have endured every day since, never to end. The pardons are intended to “end a grave national injustice that has been perpetrated on the American people, and to begin the process of national reconciliation.” It is up to the American people to decide whether this purpose will be achieved, involving far more serious questions than how our family feels about the death of a son and brother, and the undoing of the justice that was previously determined by the Court’s sentencing of Brian’s assailants. It is our hope that the truth of what happened that tragic day will survive, irrespective of partisan political objectives. We are proud of our son’s defense of American Democracy, and the continued efforts of his fellow officers to safeguard the seat of government, and the Constitution which guides it; our hearts go out to them as they cope with all that has occurred, and we pray for their strength and fortitude to continue their important mission.”

Trump and the USA leave the WHO and the Paris Accord

President Trump signed a decree on Monday, just after his inauguration, for the United States to leave the World Health Organization (WHO) as well as the Paris Accord on climate change.

Getty Images

During his first term, Mr. Trump had already attempted to withdraw from the WHO and had briefly exited the Paris Agreement, before his successor, Joe Biden, formalized their return.

The American president has stated that the United States spends far too much on the UN organization compared to other countries. He thus urges federal agencies to “suspend any future transfer of funds, support, or resources from the U.S. government to the WHO.”

“The WHO is a pretty essential organization. With the United States withdrawing, it creates a political vacuum that only one country can fill, and that is China,” said Dr. Ashish Jha, who was the White House COVID-19 response coordinator under the Biden administration, during an interview with CNN on Monday.

Getty Images

This decision is part of Mr. Trump’s plans to increase hydrocarbon production in his country. He has even promised to dismantle Mr. Biden’s initiatives aimed at developing the clean energy sector in the United States.

The withdrawals from the WHO and the Paris Agreement are set to take effect in a year.

Acclaimed director David Lynch dies at 78

Acclaimed director and favorite of movie buffs David Lynch has died, reports the New York Times.

His works, marked by disturbing atmospheres and striking images, quickly pleased seasoned audiences since the 80s and 90s.

Lynch directed great pieces of work like the critically acclaimed The Elephant Man (1980) and Blue Velvet (1986).

Twin Peaks (1990-1991), redefined television series with its blend of mystery, drama and the supernatural.

His impact on cinema and television is immense, influencing several generations of creators. With Mulholland Drive (2001), often considered a masterpiece, Lynch was a major figure in contemporary art.

David Lynch also created the infamous Dune from 1984, as well as the very original Lost Highway in 1997.

He was 78 years old.
