Nintendo Switch finally surpasses PS2 in US sales

With 45.6 million units sold, the Nintendo Switch has officially overtaken the legendary PlayStation 2, becoming the second best-selling video game console in the US, behind the Nintendo DS.

This success marks the end of the era dominated by the PlayStation 2 in the field of non-portable consoles, hailed for its exceptional sales and widely recognized as one of the best of its era.

Nintendo Switch has now outsold the PS2 to become the second best-selling console ever in the US 🎮

The PlayStation 2 (PS2), marketed between 2000 and 2013, was launched in North America in October 2000, and was until then the second best-selling video game console in the United States, with 46.5 million units sold.

It was behind the Nintendo DS, which dominated the ranking with 53.8 million units sold in the United States between its launch in 2004 and the end of its commercialization in 2014.

However, the Nintendo Switch, launched in March 2017 and still in production, has now narrowly surpassed the PlayStation 2.

Thanks to its revolutionary concept of a hybrid console, combining living room and portable, the Nintendo Switch has recorded exceptional sales, becoming Nintendo’s best-selling console.

It surpassed sales of the Xbox 360, which sold 42.7 million units between 2005 and 2016, as well as those of the Wii, marketed from 2006 to 2013 with 41.7 million units sold.

This success has once again reaffirmed Nintendo as the world leader in the video game sector.

However, while many video game fans are eagerly awaiting the next generation of Nintendo consoles, the Switch 2, rumored for release in 2025, the Switch’s popularity is experiencing a slight decline, with sales down 3%, probably due to the anticipation generated by this much-anticipated new console.

The Nintendo Switch has truly set itself apart from its competitors, at a time when the best-selling video game consoles were in the early 2000s.

By way of comparison, the Xbox Series X/S have sold just 14.5 million units since their release in 2020, while Nintendo’s previous console, the Wii U, recorded only modest sales of 5.3 million units in the US.

Dow Jones suffers its longest losing streak in over 45 years

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, the world’s leading stock market indicator, recently recorded its longest losing streak in 46 years, since 1978, with nine consecutive downward closes.

This marks the end of a particularly remarkable year for the Dow, as well as the additional momentum generated by Trump’s election victory.

The Dow ends the day lower, suffering its longest losing streak since the Carter administration.

CNN (@cnn.com) 2024-12-17T21:17:25.117Z

While the overall decline remains moderate and does not affect other major indices such as the Nasdaq and S&P 500, the Dow has, for its part, recorded a 3% loss over the last eight trading days.

The losses are mainly concentrated on the Dow, while the Nasdaq and S&P 500 are more resilient.

Despite this recent decline, the Dow is still up over 15% year-to-date, testifying to an exceptional year for stock markets.

It also remains more than 3% above its level recorded during the presidential election, reflecting positive expectations for the next administration.

A recent headline-grabbing event, the assassination of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO on December 4 in New York, has had a major impact on the Group’s market value, which has fallen by 18% since the tragedy.

The Honda-Nissan merger could actually happen

Automotive giants Honda and Nissan are reportedly considering a merger between the two Japanese companies in order to explore various possibilities for future collaboration and leverage their respective strengths, according to a statement from representatives of both companies.

Both companies have been facing significant difficulties for some time.

Honda and Nissan are discussing a possible merger, potentially bringing together two Japanese automaking titans that have recently fallen on hard times.

CNN (@cnn.com) 2024-12-18T01:30:43.007Z

Although few details have been released by the companies, talks reportedly began last spring.

According to CNN, a third automaker could join the merger, with Mitsubishi involved in major discussions within the Japanese automotive sector.

Japanese automakers are facing increasing difficulties, largely due to the rise of Chinese brands.

Once a key market for Japanese companies, Chinese consumers are now favoring their own manufacturers, including BYD, Wuling, Geely, Changan and Nio, which are growing rapidly and redefining automotive industry standards, particularly in the electric vehicle sector.

Getty Images

The latter are perceived as offering better value for money, particularly since the Chinese government introduced incentives to accelerate the population’s adoption of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Japanese automakers, once leaders, are struggling to establish themselves in the electric and hybrid vehicle market.

This competitive lag places these companies at a critical point, close to an irreversible turning point, prompting Honda, Nissan and possibly Mitsubishi to consider drastic measures to meet these challenges.

Elon Musk (and SpaceX) may have violated national security regulations

According to the New York Times, federal agencies have launched at least three investigations to determine whether SpaceX and Elon Musk have complied with reporting protocols designed to protect state secrets.

These investigations involve omissions concerning Elon Musk’s meetings with foreign executives, as well as the reasons for these meetings.

Elon Musk and his company SpaceX failed to comply with federal reporting protocols aimed at protecting state secrets, including by not providing some details of his meetings with foreign leaders, people familiar with the matter said. nyti.ms/4iG0ojK

The New York Times (@nytimes.com) 2024-12-17T20:22:31.637Z

This year, the Department of Defense’s Office of Inspector General, the U.S. Air Force and the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security each launched separate investigations into the SpaceX owner.

According to the New York Times, the U.S. Air Force also recently denied Elon Musk access to a high level of security.

Getty Images

These concerns are based on potential security risks, a concern shared by several allied nations who fear the disclosure of sensitive information to third parties.

Under the rules for obtaining a high-level security clearance, Elon Musk must provide the Department of Defense with detailed information about his private life, including the full itinerary of his foreign travels and details of his meetings with foreign leaders.

Elon Musk and his team at SpaceX are subject to a strict protocol called “continuous vetting”, which aims to assess who has access to sensitive information.

Elon Musk has therefore allegedly failed to comply with these reporting requirements since 2021, refusing to disclose information about his use of medication, a requirement necessary to obtain these security clearances.

Russian general killed by scooter bomb

According to the Russian Investigative Committee, a bomb hidden in an electric scooter caused the death of Russian Lieutenant-General Igor Kirillov, head of the radiological, biological and chemical protection forces.

According to a CNN source, Ukrainian security services were behind this successful attack.

A Russian general who was wanted by Ukraine for using chemical munitions was killed by an explosive device planted in an electric scooter in Moscow, Russian authorities said.

CNN (@cnn.com) 2024-12-17T08:44:29.095Z

Kirillov’s death came a day after Ukrainian prosecutors convicted him of the alleged use of banned chemical weapons, including chloropicrin, a tear gas banned in 1993 by the Chemical Weapons Convention, to which Russia is a signatory.

Getty Images

These weapons were allegedly used by Russia under its command during the invasion of Ukraine that began in 2022, information confirmed by the US State Department.

Kirillov was recently sanctioned by the UK for the “barbaric deployment of chemical weapons” in Ukraine, while Kyiv claims to have recorded almost 5,000 cases of Russian use of chemical munitions since the start of the war.

His death was quickly claimed by Kyiv after the explosion of a remote-controlled bomb containing 300 grams of TNT, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

The device was concealed in an electric scooter and placed against the outside wall of the targeted apartment, located near the Kremlin.

Kirillov’s assistant, identified as Ilya Polikarpov, was also killed in the explosion of the electric scooter bomb.

No immunity for Trump in Stormy Daniels case, judge rules

Trump had hoped to invoke presidential immunity, recently granted by the Supreme Court, to overturn his conviction following a trial in which he was found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying commercial documents.

However, the judge in charge of the case rejected this request, stating that Trump’s actions leading to these charges were not related to his official duties as president.

President-elect Donald Trump does not have presidential immunity in his hush money case, a judge has ruled, keeping his May conviction in place.

CNN (@cnn.com) 2024-12-16T23:58:15.663Z

Sentencing, originally scheduled for July, was postponed twice due to the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity over the summer, which pushed the sentencing date back after the election.

In his 41-page decision, Judge Juan Merchan found that it was “logical and reasonable” to consider that the falsification of documents to conceal payments to Stormy Daniels, made by Trump’s ex-lawyer Michael Cohen in order to hide Trump’s relationship with Daniels from the public while Melania Trump was pregnant with their son Barron, constituted an unofficial act.

Getty Images

The charges relate to reimbursements made by Trump to his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, for a $130,000 payment made to Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 election. This payment was intended to prevent the revelation of their alleged affair, which could have influenced the choice of certain voters.

Getty Images

Therefore, communications intended to continue this cover-up must also be considered unofficial. In his findings, Judge Merchan asserts that there was “overwhelming evidence of guilt” in the accusations against Trump. He added that even if an error had been made in introducing the disputed evidence, it would be inconsequential in light of the totality of the evidence presented.

Trump’s lawyers argue that Merchan’s decision is a direct violation of the Supreme Court’s ruling on immunity, as well as other long-established case law. They will likely appeal the decision.

Getty Images

He also reminded the attorneys that they will have to file a formal motion if they want him to consider charges of alleged juror misconduct, which they raised earlier this month since the Court cannot rule on such charges based solely on “hearsay and conjecture”.

Merchan did not, however, rule on a motion by Trump’s lawyers to overturn the conviction on the grounds that Trump was elected president.

Delta stowaway tries to hide again… this time in Canada

The woman now (in)famous for having been arrested for smuggling herself aboard a Delta flight from New York to Paris, where she hid in the plane’s lavatory to go unnoticed, has tried once again to flee the United States, this time aboard a Greyhound bus bound for… Canada!

The woman who stowed away on a Delta flight from New York to Paris last month was taken into custody again, this time trying to sneak into Canada, multiple law enforcement sources tell CNN.

CNN (@cnn.com) 2024-12-16T22:42:08.546Z

Svetlana Dali, a permanent U.S. resident and Russian national, is currently in FBI custody after being found aboard a bus bound for Canada.

CaptureCBSNEWS

According to CNN, she had managed to remove her monitoring bracelet a few hours earlier, adding a new chapter to this incredible story.

She had already been charged with smuggling herself aboard a Paris-bound plane in an incident on November 26.

Surveillance footage from John F. Kennedy airport, obtained by the authorities, revealed the strategy Dali employed to bypass the vigilance of airport employees and hide in the plane’s toilets.

Released without bail, Svetlana Dali had to comply with several strict conditions, including a ban on leaving the region where she lived or was subject to prosecution.

Her disappearance was reported by her roommate, who found Dali’s GPS bracelet on the ground, a measure imposed as part of her release conditions.

Dali is expected to be charged with violating the conditions of her release, an offense punishable by up to five years in federal prison.

According to the FBI, she will be transferred to the US Marshals in New York State.

One dead after false bomb threat at Majorie Taylor Greene’s home

A false bomb threat to the home of Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene led to tragedy. A police officer, responding to the call, collided with a motorist while en route to the congresswoman’s residence.

A motorist was killed Monday in a traffic accident with a police officer responding to a bomb threat at the home of Congresswoman Majorie Taylor Greene, authorities said.

CNN (@cnn.com) 2024-12-10T09:40:30.468Z

Tragically, a woman lost her life in the accident, while the policeman involved was not seriously injured.

A threatening e-mail, claiming that a bomb had been placed in Taylor Greene’s P.O. box and was due to explode over the weekend, is believed to have been the cause of the accident.

Getty Images

En route to the scene, an officer from Rome, a member of the bomb squad, was involved in a traffic accident.

According to a Rome police statement, the collision unfortunately resulted in the death of a female driver, identified as Tammie Pickelsimer.

The FBI, which took over the investigation, said the origin of the e-mail had been traced to a Russian IP address.

Remember that the threat targeting Marjorie Taylor Greene is part of a series of false alerts targeting several members of Congress, a phenomenon that has intensified in recent years and is often linked to foreign threats.

The congresswoman has claimed to have been dangerously “swatted” nearly 10 times since taking office.

Luigi Mangione’s relatives deeply shocked

Luigi Mangione, formally charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO as well as four other counts, has sparked astonishment among those close to him.

Some of those close to him, when asked about the situation, said they were deeply shocked and wondered what could have driven him to such an act. According to information from his social networking accounts, the man had isolated himself from his loved ones, who had had no news of him for several months.

https://bsky.app/profile/cnn.com/post/3lcwffvdpxc2b

On an X account (formerly Twitter) attributed to the alleged assassin, several people seemed concerned by his sudden disappearance on social networks. One mentioned that he hadn’t been heard from “in months”, and that his family seemed to be looking for him.

Another, visibly worried, even tweeted that she “didn’t know” if he was all right.

A few days before the UnitedHealthcare CEO’s murder, one person wrote to him on X that she was thinking of him, sending “prayers every day” on his behalf and assuring him that he was “loved and missed by those around him”.

Getty Images

Mangione, once very active on social networks, regularly sharing photos of his travels and also talking about his health, including back pain and a major operation he underwent a few years ago, is said to have suddenly stopped posting altogether during the summer.

This change attracted the attention of many of her online friends.

Getty Images

However, others who have been in contact with Mangione in the past have expressed their disbelief at the accusations. In their view, it’s inconceivable that the 26-year-old could have committed such an act.

They describe Mangione as “friendly and caring”, “humble” and “approachable”.

A former colleague, deeply surprised by this revelation, confided that he had “never had the impression” that Mangione could “self-destruct” in this way.

Luigi Mangione has been denied bail pending trial.

Biden offers 1,500 pardons and commutations in one day

Joe Biden, recently criticized for pardoning his son Hunter Biden for his criminal offenses, is making news again by granting 1,500 pardons in a single day, an all-time record.

President Biden, in the midst of preparations before his term ends in January 2025 as Trump prepares to take back the White House, granted pardons and commutations of sentences to 1,500 people.

Getty Images

The majority of these pardons were granted to individuals convicted of non-violent crimes, including marijuana possession, who had been released from prison and placed under house arrest during the coronavirus pandemic.

In addition, Biden pardoned an additional 39 people convicted of non-violent crimes.

Getty Images

Recall that those granted pardons have their convictions entirely erased, while those whose sentences are commuted retain the guilty verdict on their criminal record, but their punishment is either reduced or entirely reversed.

The President recently granted a controversial pardon to his son Hunter Biden, implicated in cases of tax fraud for not paying his taxes for several years, as well as weapons possession, having lied on his purchase form while under the influence of drugs.

Getty Images

The announcement provoked polarized reactions: some expressed support, but the majority and its opponents reacted with indignation, denouncing preferential treatment and even abuse of power.
