Hobey Baker : Jacob Fowler and Michael Hage are not nominated

The Hobey Baker trophy is awarded to the best hockey player in the NCAA. And here are the 10 nominees for the 2024-2025 season.

Zeev Buium, Jack Devine, Aiden Fink, Mac Gadowsky, Isaac Howard, Ryan Leonard, Ayrton Martino, Liam McLinskey, Jimmy Snuggerud, and Alex Tracy are the 10 players in question.

These are not the most well-known names (aside from Leonard and Buium) to the Québécois public.

What’s important to know is that in Montreal, they were watching two names in this regard: Michael Hage and Jacob Fowler. However, the two players were not nominated for the trophy.

In both cases, seeing them nominated was not a guarantee. Especially in Hage’s case, who was good but didn’t dominate as a rookie.

But it’s still worth noting this in relation to Fowler, who could have seen his name come out: another goalkeeper (Alex Tracy) was nominated. If there hadn’t been a goalkeeper in the top-10, that would have been one thing, but…

Tracy, a goalkeeper who plays for Minnesota, has 25 wins in 36 games. His average of 1.41 and his efficiency rate of .946 are excellent, let’s say.

(Crédit: Hockey DB)

Fowler, on the other hand, has 24 wins in 33 games. He gave up 52 goals (against 51 for Tracy), has an average of 1.64, and an efficiency rate of .940. Statistically speaking, the non-drafted goalkeeper from Minnesota State has better numbers.

Fowler may not have a chance to win the Hobey Baker next year since he’s expected to make the jump to the pros once the Eagles are done playing this season.

– Note.

– Good question.

– Signature to come in Toronto.

– Everything is going well in the organization.

Brendan Gallagher played the last games despite the death of his mother: what an inspiration

During the night, Brendan Gallagher announced the death of his mother. This is obviously horrible news for the new father.

When seeing the news, it was easy to wonder what it meant for tonight’s game, with the Islanders. But what needs to be understood is that the news was announced yesterday, but the death did not occur yesterday.

Renaud Lavoie discussed the topic in his daily column on BPM Sports: Della Gallagher passed away last week, while the habs were in the West.

We thought it was going to be tough because it was his first trip since the birth of his daughter, but it was also for another reason.

Gally missed some practices and hasn’t spoken to the media since then, but he has been faithful to his post during games. He has been helping his teammates on the ice in this playoff run and has played the last games in mourning.

He’s a pro through and through, this Gally. He is an inspiration for the habs family.

The habs forward, who is the player with the most seniority among the team’s active players, wants to do everything to participate in the playoffs this season. Even if it means postponing his mourning…

Let’s look at his line. During Tuesday’s game, which was the most important game of the season, he played his best game. Josh Anderson, who is perhaps the most injured guy in uniform in Montreal right now, also gave it his all.

It’s that line (with Christian Dvorak, who was on fire) that led the habs to their most important win of the season.

If some guys on the team see that and are not inspired, they don’t belong in Montreal. Anderson and Gally are the perfect guys to support Nick Suzuki, who has been carrying the team on his shoulders for a month.

Will it bring the habs to the playoffs? To be seen.

Logan Mailloux must (really) question his future in Montreal

Let’s talk about the Canadiens’ defense.

If Kent Hughes doesn’t add anyone to his lineup this summer at the blue line and doesn’t trade anyone, we know that six players are sure to have their spot in the sun in 2026-2026.

We’re talking here about Mike Matheson, Alexandre Carrier, Arber Xhekaj, Lane Hutson, Jayden Struble (who will be a restricted free agent, but seeing him sign is just a formality) and Kaiden Guhle, who is currently injured, but could return to play for the playoffs.

David Savard, who is currently in town, is at the end of his contract, him. We don’t know if he’ll be back in 2025-2026… but if he does, it’ll be as a seventh defenseman and at a low price.

But why are we talking about this?

Because, in my opinion, it’s interesting to try to see how much the blue line can undergo changes for the next season. This is not necessarily the biggest project for Kent Hughes this summer, but still.

The other thing to consider is that the Canadiens would have a plan, if all goes well, to bring David Reinbacher to the NHL.

Matheson, Carrier, Guhle, Hutson, Struble, Xhekaj, Reinbacher: that’s seven guys – and that doesn’t take into account a signing, like Savard. And unless Xhekaj is traded (if one of the seven had to be, it would probably be him), that makes for a complete picture.

By the force of things, this means that the other guys in the organization will have to work more than hard to make their place in the sun. We think here of Adam Engstrom, who is in his first year in North America…

But we think especially of Logan Mailloux, obviously.

Logan Mailloux, this is the player who wanted to make his place in Montreal at the last camp, but was not able to do so. This is the player who has ups and downs in the AHL and whose importance in the Canadiens’ organization is less… obvious, let’s say.

This is the player who is controversial. And even if he has been taken care of by the new administration, he remains a choice of Marc Bergevin.

As a right-handed defenseman, he had the chance to step up when David Reinbacher got injured and Justin Barron struggled so much that he was sent to Nashville. If Mailloux wanted to, he could have become the future on the right side of the Canadiens’ blue line.

But he didn’t.

Obviously, you know as well as I do that the development of a prospect is not linear. But considering all this, would you be surprised to see the Canadiens trade him this summer?

What we have to keep in mind is that the Canadiens want to improve their top-6 offense through trades. And the second center of the future will not be uprooted by trading Luke Tuch and a third-round pick – with all due respect to Tuch.

To receive, you have to give.

Among the young defensemen of the team, four have more value than the others in my opinion: Kaiden Guhle, Lane Hutson, David Reinbacher, and Logan Mailloux. And I don’t see the first three, who should play in Montreal in 2025-2026, leaving.

When we look at everything coldly, yes, it’s easy to say that Mailloux has a chance to leave this summer. Not at all costs, but still.

I wonder how much Mailloux is questioning himself right now. Does he have his head in hockey or is he wondering if his future is with the Canadiens organization?

If he has a strong finish to the season, he will help his cause – in Montreal or elsewhere.

Top-2 : Mitch Marner the football player

Last night in the NHL, only four teams were in action.

And none of these games had any influence on the habs.

Here are the results and highlights:

1. Mitch Marner the forward

Mitch Marner will become a UFA after the season and let’s say that on the free agent market, he will command a big salary.

Last night, he showed he wasn’t just good at hockey. In his old life, clearly, he played football.

Marner had an assist on the first goal of the game.

That of Auston Matthews.

The Avalanche created a tie a few moments later, however.

A sixth goal in six games for Valeri Nichushkin.

But in the third period, Toronto got help from the official.

Watch how the winning goal was scored:

Final score: 2-1.

2. Three goals in less than five minutes to start the game in Minnesota

The Wild didn’t need much time to seal their victory last night.

Minnesota needed just 4:29 to score the first three goals of the game.

These are the fastest three goals to start a game in the 2024-2025 season.

And in the history of the franchise, these three goals are not bad either…

The locals finally won with a score of 4-0.

Filip Gustavsson took care of the defense, stopping 34 shots for a shutout.

Big win for the Wild in the standings, anyway.

In the East, not much happened, except for the Leafs, who moved away from the Lightning.

Brendan Gallagher announces the death of his mother

Sad news in the world of hockey.

Brendan Gallagher announced, during the night, that his mother had passed away. He took to publishing a message with many photos of his mother to pay tribute to her.

Our thoughts are with his family and with him: we offer our sympathies.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Brendan Gallagher (@bgally.11)

There is about a year to the day, we learned that his mother was fighting brain cancer, which is a big illness. And unfortunately, she did not survive.

This is really sad. Losing his mother at his age cannot be easy.

Of course, Gallagher must be really saddened by the news and must be experiencing strong emotions these days. After all, in recent days, he also became a father.

Experiencing that at the same time as mourning his mother must be really something.

The little warrior of the Habs, who has always played the right way on the ice, will probably ask for advice from Martin St-Louis. He too lost his mother during a season, when he was in his first months with the New York Rangers.

He could help him get through such a moment by sharing his experience.

Note that yesterday, Gally was not at the optional practice of the Habs in Brossard. Is he with the club on the road? Will Michael Pezzetta play tonight? Will a guy from Laval arrive as reinforcement? We will see.

But for now, that’s not the priority.

– We understand better why Gally did this after his goal, Tuesday.

Michel Bergeron would already give the Calder Trophy to Lane Hutson

When Michel Bergeron thinks something, he doesn’t hide to say it.

And this time, the Tiger went with a prediction about the winner of the Calder Trophy this season. In his mind, it’s Lane Hutson who should win it.

In fact, he explained on TVA Sports, Wednesday evening, that in his mind “it’s already done”.

According to him, it’s official. Lane Hutson is far ahead of Macklin Celebrini and Dustin Wolf.

Bergeron is especially impressed with how Hutson presents himself in every game. He also likes his intelligence with and without the puck.

The Tiger even allowed himself to compare Hutson’s ability to avoid hits to what a certain Wayne Gretzky did while playing in the NHL. Note: Bergeron did not compare the two players, but pointed out a similar skill.

Lane Hutson is alone at the top of the rookies’ scorers in the NHL with a total of 53 points this season. Faced with such a feat, Bergeron can’t help but think about how the other General Managers in the league must be biting their nails for not drafting him in 2022.

Bergeron is not the only one who thinks Hutson will win the Calder. Georges Laraque was not as convinced as him, but he was confident to see the Habs’ defenseman win the rookie of the year title.

It was also the opinion of several experts from NHL.com, who conducted a vote a little over a week ago.

With only three points behind Hutson having played 11 games less, Celebrini is not out of the picture. The advantage seems to be leaning towards Hutson, but saying that everything is over and that the NHL should give him the Calder right away might be a bit too much.

Anyway, the sports betting platforms still believe Celebrini is ahead in this race.

The Tiger may already be convinced, but Hutson must finish the job and convince the rest of the NHL.

Overtime

– The Canadiens’ fans give a lot of energy to the players.

– He was fortunately back in the game in the third period.

– The Canadiens can’t take the Islanders lightly.

– A hat trick for Laurent Dauphin in the Rocket’s win.

Montembeault and Hellebuyck have similar statistics since the return of the 4 nations

The Canadiens are currently battling for a playoff spot thanks to a great streak of success since the return of the break from the Confrontation of the 4 nations.

The first trio of the Canadiens is working well in scoring important goals, but we must not forget the contribution of Samuel Montembeault in the net.

In the last episode of Tellement Hockey by Radio-Canada Sports, Martin Leclerc explained why Montembeault is helping the Canadiens achieve so much success by pointing to a certain statistic: his consistent efficiency rate in each game.

Since the return of the break from the 4 nations, Monty has played eight games. Of these eight games, he finished six with an efficiency rate above .900. As Leclerc explained, this kind of consistency is something that even Carey Price did not always do.

He even went so far as to say that it is not the kind of thing that Price did necessarily throughout the season when he won the Hart Trophy.

The performance of the Canadiens’ goalkeeper is simply surprising. Every time he is in front of the net, he gives his team a chance to win. The proof: he has seven wins and one loss in overtime since the return of the break. He has not yet lost in regulation time.

This eight-game streak without a loss in regulation time is his best since the start of the season.

Looking at Montembeault’s statistics since the return of the break, we notice that they are very similar to a certain Connor Hellebuyck, who is by far the favorite for the Vezina Trophy this season and is fighting in the Hart Trophy race.

Since February 22, Montembeault has a .922 efficiency rate compared to Hellebuyck’s .920. It’s not the best in the NHL, but it’s already good to be able to compare (and even surpass) the best.

Montembeault also has an average of 2.09 goals allowed since the return to play, which is slightly less good than Hellebuyck’s 1.96, but is getting closer.

The playoff race is far from over, just like Montembeault’s streak of games without a loss in regulation time. The Canadiens will greatly need his help against other teams that have the wind in their sails, like the Islanders, Avalanche, and Blues.

Overtime

– Simoneau does not mince his words.

– We like this respect.

– Demidov is a patient guy. It will get back in place.

– Calgary is the only Canadian team that is currently not in a position to make the playoffs.

An increase of about 20% for the price of the Maple Leafs season tickets

The cost of living is always increasing and the price of tickets to attend sports events is also following this trend. When it comes to season tickets, the increase can sometimes be major.

This is precisely the case for season tickets for the Maple Leafs’ next campaign.

According to James Mirtle of The Athletic, the value of Maple Leafs season tickets is expected to see an increase of around 20% in certain sections of the Scotiabank Arena.

The increase is not the same everywhere. In fact, the average increase in season ticket prices is 9%. Except that some sections are getting a worse deal than others with increases exceeding 20%.

One of the largest increases belongs to one of the upper sections. The price of $8,522 in 2024-25 will rise to $10,396 for the 2025-26 season. That’s an increase of nearly $2,000!

A spokesperson for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment explained to Mirtle that the reason for an increase of around 20% for the price of certain sections is that the price in the past was too low compared to other markets.

No candy for Maple Leafs fans. If you can’t afford it, there’s a waiting list of 12,000 people who will come and take your place with joy.

This is precisely the kind of attitude from MLSE that has completely changed the face of Maple Leafs fans.

Real fans can no longer afford tickets. Some season ticket holders are even considering not renewing their subscription. This leaves room for richer people, but who don’t necessarily have the team at heart, to buy them.

The atmosphere in Toronto is flat because the people who can afford tickets are not all die-hard fans.

The increase in the price of tickets for the playoffs has also increased by around $2,000.

Has Toronto really presented performances interesting enough in recent years to increase the price of their tickets so drastically? No.

A few weeks ago, the New York Rangers announced an increase in the price of certain season tickets, but they also specified that there would be no increase if the team did not make the playoffs.

We will increase the price of tickets, but we want to earn it.

If the Maple Leafs want to get out of this story, they will have to offer good performances to their fans during the playoffs. Winning more than one round would be a start.

Overtime

– Good listening!

– St-Louis is not the kind of person who gives up easily.

Advanced stats: the Hutson/Struble pair is among the elite of the NHL

This season, we’re talking a lot about Lane Hutson’s impact on the Habs, and for good reason. The defenseman, who is approaching the record for most assists in a season by a rookie defenseman, has made a difference in town… and it’s no wonder that Kent Hughes hopes Ivan Demidov will have a similar impact next season.

Because the #48 is impressing his GM… and it goes far beyond his 53 points in 67 games.

That being said, even if we’re talking a lot about the rookie, there’s another defenseman who’s impressing in town right now… and we’re talking about Hutson’s partner on the blue line, Jayden Struble.

At the start of the season, Struble was more often than not in the stands. He had even been to Laval in January for a conditioning stint, and it was Kaiden Guhle’s injury that had forced the Habs to recall him.

Now, what we’re noticing is that Hutson and Struble have been playing together for a while… and the results are extremely interesting. In fact, according to MoneyPuck’s numbers, the Hutson/Struble pair is tied for fourth in the NHL (among pairs who have played at least 200 minutes together) for the percentage of expected goals controlled on the ice.

What this means, concretely, is that there are only three pairs that, when they’re on the ice, control the quality of scoring chances in favor of their team more than Hutson and Struble.

(Credit: Screenshot/MoneyPuck)

Indeed, when Hutson and Struble are on the ice, 60.7% of the expected goals on the ice are in favor of the Canadiens. This is a very high number that, more and more, is starting to have a representative sample.

And this raises an interesting question in the context where Kaiden Guhle could return to play before the end of the season. Logic would have dictated that he take the place of the one who replaced him… but can the Habs really afford to bench a player who excels on his off side and has obvious chemistry with Lane Hutson?

And if the answer to that question is “no”, it means that Arber Xhekaj must start to worry about his spot.

David Savard is the other logical candidate, but if Savard leaves the lineup, the Habs would only have one right-handed defenseman in their brigade (Alexandre Carrier). Playing with five left-handed defensemen is doable… but it’s not ideal.

Especially since Savard is still an important piece on the penalty kill.

The Habs will therefore have a big decision to make if Guhle returns to play… because right now, Struble is not playing like someone who deserves to be in the stands.

Without being spectacular, he’s effective… and it seems like he’s feeling better on the ice.

In overtime

– This pair is also doing well.

– Take a few minutes for your pleasure.

– Kent Hughes praises Martin St-Louis’s teaching qualities.

– Real kids.

– He had said in the past that he would never play for the Yankees.

Kent Hughes hopes Ivan Demidov will have a “Lane Hutson-like” impact next year

Ivan Demidov is a young player who is extremely highly anticipated in Montreal. The young forward, who is having a great season in Russia (even if his coach is holding him back), is one of the most talented prospects in a long time in Montreal.

And there are a lot of people in town who are expecting great things from Demidov.

The plan, for now, is to see Demidov arrive in Montreal next season. His contract ends on May 31st in Russia, and the Habs hope to bring him to America soon after.

He won’t arrive before May 31st, that’s for sure. You can forget that idea.

But next year, the plan is to see him play a big role in Montreal. And that’s what Kent Hughes confirmed in an interview with Frank Seravalli: the GM hopes Demidov will have an impact similar to Lane Hutson next year.

Naturally, in terms of immediate impact, it’s hard to ask for more than what Hutson is bringing to the Habs this season. Hutson has 53 points in 67 games this season, an exceptional harvest for a rookie defenseman.

And just yesterday, his big goal in a crucial game for the Habs was extremely important.

The team hopes that Demidov will be able to have a similar impact next year. We know that Hutson is a big factor in explaining the Habs’ resurgence this season, and Demidov is another piece that could change the game.

And speaking of Hutson, the GM was also asked if Cole Hutson, Lane’s little brother, was considered by the Habs at the last draft.

And as you can hear in the segment that’s already posted here, the answer is no.

Hughes explains that the Habs liked Cole Hutson, but they already have many good left-handed defensemen, and another Hutson would have been a bit redundant. The GM says that the Canadiens had Cole Hutson higher on their list than 43rd (the rank where he was drafted), but they never thought of taking him instead of the players they did select.

And at the same time, Ivan Demidov and Michael Hage (the two young players drafted by the Habs before the 43rd rank) are also excellent prospects.

We’ll see if the future will prove the Canadiens right… but for next season, the team is expecting big things from Ivan Demidov.

Let’s hope he can, like Lane Hutson this year, change the game for the Habs next year.

In a lot of ways

Patrik Laine made similar comments.

– Good listen.

– He might have been better off paying a bit more attention to the Habs last night, hehe.

– The support players stood up yesterday.

– Mathieu Boislard leaves the Lions.
