Top-5 : The Oilers help the CH and beat the Rangers in regulation time

Last night in the NHL, seven games were on the agenda.

With 14 teams playing, the action was plentiful.

Here are the results and highlights:

1. Thanks to the Oilers

In the standings, the CH is one small point behind the Rangers and the last rank giving access to the series.

Yesterday, New York could have increased the lead, but the club lost in regulation to the Oilers. Thanks to Edmonton!

The Blue Shirts still have one point more than Montreal, but with two more games played.

As for the meeting, Connor McDavid scored the insurance goal at the end of the third period. His 25th goal of the season.

A little earlier, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins got his 25th assist on the winning goal of his teammate Viktor Arvidsson.

What a shot!

Leon Draisaitl, for his part, participated in the first goal of his own.

He thus extended his sequence of games with at least one point to 18.

MVP!

The visiting team won 3-1.

2. Mikko Rantanen back in Colorado

In Colorado, the Stars were visiting and it was Mikko Rantanen’s first game there since he was traded.

He obviously received a nice ovation.

And he felt his return with an assist on the first goal of the game.

It was Jason Robertson who broke the ice.

But the Avalanche immediately countered through the one who was traded for Rantanen initially, Martin Necas.

This game went into overtime.

Cale Makar sealed the deal with a superb goal.

It’s thanks to two goals in 20 seconds that the game went into overtime.

What a game!

At the start of the meeting, Nathan MacKinnon received his golden stick in honor of the 1000th point he recently scored.

Gabriel Landeskog, the captain, gave him the honor.

3. No thanks to the Golden Knights

If we can say thank you to the Oilers, we can’t say thank you to the Golden Knights.

The day before yesterday, they lost to the Sabres in a shootout and yesterday, they admitted defeat against the Red Wings.

With this 3-0 win, Detroit moved within one point of the CH, therefore.

Albert Johansson scored a great goal to give the Wings the lead.

Ilya Samsonov was then roughed up and he didn’t appreciate it at all.

The locals only scored nice goals in this game.

Look at Lucas Raymond’s goal.

And on the third and final goal of the Michigan formation, Patrick Kane joined a select group of American players by getting an assist.

4. The Sharks are officially eliminated

Last night, the Sharks were not playing, but they were still eliminated.

It was only a matter of time, but it’s official as of yesterday.

With a 7-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks, the Blues crushed all of San Jose’s chances of qualifying for the spring tournament.

Saint-Louis would have had to lose all their last games and San Jose would have had to win all their last games – without counting the other teams in the race. It was only a matter of time before Ryan Warsofsky’s squad was eliminated.

As for the Blues, they are tied with the Canucks and the last rank giving access to the series (73 points). Vancouver lost yesterday to Utah, 3-1.

5. Two defeats in 24h for the Panthers

It’s going bad for the Panthers. In their last four games, they only have one win and they lost their two games over the weekend.

Saturday against the Canadiens and yesterday against the Islanders by a score of 4-2.

Florida was leading 2-0 in the third period, but Patrick Roy’s squad scored four goals without reply.

Noah Dobson led the charge for the Islanders with this great goal, 17 seconds after the equalizing goal.

Then, at the end of the game, Ilya Sorokin preserved his team’s lead in a nice way.

Overtime

– An entire sequence, in fact.

– Stolen by his former teammate.

– A phantom infraction.

– A 26th career shutout for Petr Mrazek.

– Ouch.

– He wanted the puck.

– Wow.

– The best scorers.

24 points in 17 games for Sean Farrell: it’s day and night with his start to the season

The Canadian has many promising prospects to watch, from Ivan Demidov in the KHL to Michael Hage and Jacob Fowler in the NCAA, including of course the Laval Rocket.

And well you can add a name to your watchlist: Sean Farrell.

Since the beginning of February, the 23-year-old forward has obtained 24 points in his last 17 games.

He has also amassed two points in his last three games, helping the Rocket win their two games over the weekend against their division rival: the Utica Comets.

This is a complete turnaround from the start of his season, when the American player had only two small points after 22 games.

He scored his first goal on December 14 and was removed from the lineup a few times. Yesterday, his two goals were his 14th and 15th of the campaign.

We don’t know what has changed for the forward, but he was part of the topics on The Sick Podcast with Grant McCagg and Shayne Gaumond.

McCagg even believes that Farrell could help the second wave of the power play of the Canadiens. Personally, I would wait before recalling him and let him have the chance to continue developing in Laval.

Especially since Farrell is at the heart of the Rocket’s recent successes, which currently occupies the first rank of the American League.

The Canadiens’ prospect is taking advantage of his presence on a line with two veterans, playing with Alex Barré-Boulet and Laurent Dauphin, who are both having good seasons with 50 and 43 points so far, respectively.

This is a nice progression for Farrell, who was drafted by the Canadiens in the 4th round, 124th overall, in the 2020 draft. His development has been a bit longer, as is often the case with players who go through the university circuits.

Will this recent explosion continue for the young player, and will he be able to bring this level of play to the Canadiens’ next training camp?

Because, although he played six games with the Canadiens during the 2022-23 season, scoring a goal in the process, Farrell had been quite discreet during the team’s last camp last fall.

In a hurry

– A helping hand from the Oilers!

– 25th goal of Connor McDavid.

– Ouch!

– The brackets are announced.

– End of the Cavaliers’ winning streak.

Joshua Roy would like to become a player like John Tavares

Last night, Joshua Roy was on the show L’Antichambre where he answered many questions from the panelists.

Quebec forward notably made an interesting statement when he was asked which player he aspired to be. Here is his response:

« I think I would go with a John Tavares, you know he’s a guy who has good hockey sense, not necessarily the fastest, you know I think we still have two styles of play that are similar. He has a great career too, so it’s sure that if I’m able to do what he does, I’ll be very… very happy. »

As CH fans, we can only hope that Roy reaches that level of play one day.

However, for that to happen, he would need to start bringing the same kind of offensive contribution in the NHL as in the American League, where the young player has forged a career as a scorer.

Before his recall, Roy was the top scorer for the Laval Rocket with 20 goals and 35 points in 46 games.

However, the Quebecer is still waiting to score his first point this year in seven games with the Canadiens. He had 9 points, including 4 goals, in 23 games in the NHL before this season.

This should not be long in coming since the forward has had a few good opportunities and the CH has made sure to put him in a favorable offensive context by playing him on the second line with Alex Newhook and Patrik Laine.

In addition, even if the points are not yet there, Roy is playing effective hockey by avoiding getting into trouble while gaining experience in the National League.

Also questioned about the adaptation between leagues and the difference in playing systems between the Canadiens and the Rocket, the forward appreciates the similarity between the two teams which facilitates his transition.

Can Roy impress the CH management enough to secure a regular spot with the team by the end of the season and especially next year?

For now, with Kirby’s absence for the rest of the season, the ball is in his court and it’s up to him to show that he is indispensable to the club.

And a good way to do that is to regularly fill the score sheet.

In a hurry

– Disappointing return for Mikko Rantanen.

– Results of CF Montreal’s young players.

– Juan Soto wanted a competitive team.

– No need for a ladder!

– Gold for Canada.

Operation: David Reinbacher feels discomfort in his knee

David Reinbacher’s first full season in North America is not going as planned.

He first suffered a serious injury to his left knee at the very beginning of the season.

He therefore participated in his first game this season on February 19 last.

In his six games with the Rocket in 2025, Reinbacher played very well, collecting three points in the process.

However, the Austrian defender did not play in the Rocket’s last four games and we now know more about the reason behind this.

According to Alexandre Gascon, Reinbacher did not wear the uniform because he is feeling discomfort in his left knee, the one that was operated on.

On Friday, my colleague Marc-Olivier Cook wrote an article stating that #64 had practiced with the team, but would not play.

Pascal Vincent had also specified that there was no need to panic…

If the most promising defender of the CH is feeling discomfort in the knee that was operated on, to me, it’s not necessarily reassuring.

We should hope that his injury was not made worse by returning to play a bit too quickly, even if he was doing very well since his return.

We have to believe that it’s mostly a precaution, as the tweet above states, that he is being left out.

We can assume that this is a decision by the CH to be cautious with him, because an aggravated knee injury is rarely forgiven.

Even more so when the player in question is only 20 years old and still in full development…

Let’s wait and see if he can return to the lineup soon, because his presence was undoubtedly helping the Rocket as the playoffs approach.

A stable and reliable presence like Reinbacher’s is not common…

Rapid Fire

– Montembeault’s best streak is coming at the perfect time.

– I love it.

– Rantanen collected a point on the Stars’ first goal against his former team. A very nice play on his part.

– Fraser Minten (included in the Brandon Carlo trade) is demonstrating the extent of his talent with the Providence Bruins.

– Some news from the MLB:

Gavin McKenna : 92 points in a sequence of 38 matches with at least one point

I don’t think it will change by the 2026 draft, but Gavin McKenna will be the first prospect chosen from this crop, without a doubt.

The cousin by marriage of Connor Bedard is simply amazing.

In 54 games this season, the brilliant prospect has collected no less than 121 points.

Yesterday, he continued his streak of consecutive games with at least one point with a 38th game where he was credited with a point.

What’s even more impressive is that he collected no less than 92 points in the process.

Yes, yes, you read that right. 92 points in his last 38 games.

His 38 consecutive games with at least one point equal the mark from 2000 of Sidney Crosby, who ranks second at this level.

Alexander Radulov holds the record of 50 games with at least one point in the LCH, a record that McKenna will not be able to break this season, with only two games left to play.

Not only did McKenna continue his streak, but he did it with a small haul of seven points in a 7-3 win for the Medicine Hat Tigers.

Again, you read that right.

It was his second game of the season with at least six points and a third consecutive game with at least four points.

McKenna is really in a class of his own.

Across the entire CHL (the three Canadian junior leagues), he ranks third among the top scorers.

Only Michael Misa (126 points), who should be drafted in the top three this summer, and Andrew Cristall (125 points), who is 19 years old, are ahead of him.

Let’s remember that McKenna is only 17 years old and will be eligible for the draft in 2026.

He will therefore have the right to another season in the WHL next year, and at the pace he’s currently at, he has a good chance of surpassing Connor Bedard’s mark during his draft year.

Bedard had accumulated 143 points in 57 games during the 2022-23 season.

The fact that Bedsy did it in 57 games adds to the magnitude of his talent and dominance at the junior level, but McKenna seems just as dominant.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what he’ll be able to do in 2025-26.

In a hurry

Well…

– In my opinion, it’s Nick Suzuki, because he’s been more than consistent throughout the season and drives his teammates. Montembeault is also a very good choice.

– Interesting.

– It’s Rantanen’s return to Colorado.

– Ilya Samsonov was not laughing.

The advice of Ilya Kovalchuk for Ivan Demidov

Ilya Kovalchuk announced his retirement this week.

He will have had a superb career in the end!

The former CH player was also interviewed by RG Media as part of an interview and Ivan Demidov was discussed. Kovalchuk spoke of his compatriot as a super guy… but he also gave him some advice.

Kovalchuk played in Montreal and knows the market.

He knows what it takes to be successful here… And he also knows that in Montreal, hockey is important for fans.

This is why Kovalchuk wants Demidov to be ready to face the music.

He must be ready to face the reality of playing in a city where hockey is a real religion. Every move he makes will be scrutinized by management and the media. – Ilya Kovalchuk

He also advises him to get involved in the community so that fans appreciate him even more:

In fact, Ilya Kovalchuk is right.

We’re already talking a lot about Ivan Demidov while he’s playing in Russia, in the KHL… And it’s sure and certain that all eyes will be on him as soon as he arrives in town.

The hype surrounding the CH’s prospect is enormous, after all.

And everyone is eager to see him make his first strides in the Tricolor uniform!

It’s cool to see a former CH player who was appreciated in Montreal take the time to give indications to a young player like Demidov.

Kovalchuk – who had his share of success in the NHL – knows that his compatriot has the talent to be one of the best players in the NHL in the near future and I imagine that’s why he wants to see him succeed too.

In rapid fire

– It’s getting back on track for Elias Pettersson.

– Well done.

– I agree!

– Not ideal, that.

When Patrik Laine gives himself as he did yesterday, he can really help the Canadiens

The Canadian won a nice one last night at the Bell Center against the Florida Panthers.

Martin St-Louis’ men played almost perfectly: there were no passengers on the ice and that gave a good result.

Patrik Laine contributed to his team’s victory by doing what he does best, which is scoring on the power play with his favorite weapon.

Dramatic turn of events in the NCAA: Jacob Fowler and Boston College eliminated

While all the eyes of Montreal Canadiens fans were on the incredible performance and victory of the CH against the Florida Panthers, history was written in the NCAA.

Unfortunately, history was written against the hopes of Tricolore, Jacob Fowler, and his Boston College university.

In fact, for the first time in NCAA history, the ninth-ranked team eliminated the first seed in the quarterfinals of the Hockey East division.

The Huskies of Northeastern, the former team of Jordan Harris and Jayden Struble, completely surprised everyone by eliminating the Huskies of Boston College with a 3-1 victory.

Never could such a scenario have been imagined, considering that BC is the best team in the division since the beginning of the season, and Northeastern is having a very difficult season.

In short, it’s a disaster for Jacob Fowler and his team.

The Eagles of Boston College are eliminated from the Hockey East division series and will therefore not go to the TD Garden for the semifinals and finals of the division, although they were the favorites.

Last season, Boston College had easily won the tournament by beating the University of Massachusetts 8-1 in the semifinals, and then beating Lane Hutson and the University of Boston 6-2 in the final.

In short, it’s a completely different outcome for BC and Fowler, who will have to regroup and think about their next challenge, namely the Frozen Four.

Because, in the end, Boston College’s season is not over.

They will be drafted for the Frozen Four tournament, the NCAA regional championship.

Last season, Fowler and BC had lost in the final, and therefore, this season, they will certainly want to bounce back, especially after their defeat last night.

This will be worth watching, as the tournament begins on March 28.

In Rafale

– It will be very difficult.

– To be continued.

– Great celebration.

« I hadn’t looked at the standings in three years » – Nick Suzuki

For several seasons now, or since the beginning of the rebuild, we no longer look at the National Hockey League standings in the same way as before.

In fact, we look at them in reverse, hoping that the Canadiens will be as low as possible in terms of points, in order to have the best possible choice in the draft.

This had become the exciting way to look at the standings, because looking at them thinking about the playoffs was simply impossible and discouraging.

But that’s when things are finally different this season.

After a fairly average start to the season, the Canadiens woke up and had an incredible sequence in December, which brought the team back into the playoff race.

And since then, except for a downturn just before the Confrontation of the Four Nations, the Tricolore has been unbeatable and is doing very well in the playoff race.

We’re finally looking at the standings in a normal way, which means making the playoffs.

And for the players, it’s the same thing, as captain Nick Suzuki said he hadn’t looked at the NHL standings in three years.

With the rebuild and very difficult seasons, we can understand the captain not having looked at the standings during all these seasons, whereas unlike fans, Suzuki wouldn’t have been checking Tankathon.com.

It’s pleasant and invigorating for Suzuki and his team to be right in the middle of a playoff race, as it pushes the players to give it their all, and especially to play in a context where they can’t afford to make mistakes.

Suzuki is, in fact, the main actor in this resurgence of the Canadiens, with 17 points in his last 10 games, and has done everything to prevent Kent Hughes from dismantling the team.

It’s no coincidence that the Canadiens have the best record in the NHL since the Confrontation of the Four Nations.

In short, everyone believes in the playoffs, whether it’s the fans or the players.

Suzuki and his team are looking at the standings with excitement, just like us, and want to get their hands on that 8th and final playoff spot.

The rebuild therefore seems to be really coming to an end, and at this rate, there won’t be a third season of “The Rebuild: Inside the Montreal Canadiens”.

Season 1 was released on September 19, 2024, and as for Season 2, we can expect a release date around that time.

Seriously, it’s a good series, but I’d take playoffs over another season any day.

However, if the Canadiens make the playoffs, there will be great content for Season 2.

In a Flash

– This will be one to watch.

– An excellent first grand prix of the season.

– Will NHL teams be interested in him this summer?

The Canadian has the best record in the NHL since the Four Nations Cup

The Montreal Canadian is really giving us the taste to believe in the series, and most importantly, it allows us to believe thanks to its recent successes.

The Tricolore is on fire, and it has ensured its return to the series race, while giving its general manager good reasons not to liquidate the club.

It’s an inspired and inspiring CH that we’ve been watching for a while now, and that’s what explains the series atmosphere at the Centre Bell, which is entirely deserved.

The Tricolore has given itself reasons and chances to believe in the series, especially since the Four Nations Confrontation.

In fact, since this tournament, the Montreal Canadian has the best record in the entire National Hockey League.

(Credit: NHL.com)

16 points in 10 games, that’s the best pace of points per game in the entire League, ahead of teams like the Washington Capitals, the Winnipeg Jets, and the Colorado Avalanche.

The Tricolore is therefore dominant since Canada won the Four Nations Confrontation, and that’s entirely what allows the club and the fans to believe in the series more than ever.

The players, and especially the team’s first trio, have doubled their efforts to be at the heart of the series race and give themselves the best possible chances to participate in the spring tournament.

Speaking of the first trio, it’s also the best since the Four Nations break.

Here are the players’ statistics.

Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Juraj Slafkovsky are really making the law on the ice for several games, and that’s largely what explains the club’s current successes.

The CH’s first trio is simply dominant every time they’re on the ice.

It’s no wonder that Nick Suzuki is at the top of the scorers, tied with Leon Draisaitl since the Four Nations.

Moreover, it’s important to note that this trio doesn’t just dominate offensively, but also defensively.

This trio produces a lot of goals, but almost no goals are conceded when they’re on the ice.

In short, things are going really well for the Tricolore, which currently has its destiny in its hands, considering that the Rangers have played one more game than the CH.

The game against the Ottawa Senators at the Centre Bell on Tuesday night will be one of the most important games of the season.

In a Hurry

– Incredible.

– Indeed.

– To follow today.

– Here is the ranking of the first race of the season.
