Rantanen : From his arrival in Carolina, he told the Hurricanes that he didn’t want to play there

The Mikko Rantanen saga is finally over.

The former Avalanche player – who spent a few weeks in Carolina – was traded to the Dallas Stars last Friday.

And he’s having fun with his new team, by the way. Rantanen collected three points (two goals) in his first two games with the Stars!

He was a distraction for the Hurricanes when he was part of the organization in Carolina because we didn’t know if he wanted to stay there.

The Canes still traded Martin Necas to acquire him and we know that whole story took enormous proportions after the transaction.

But what we didn’t necessarily know is that when Rantanen arrived in Carolina… He immediately told the Hurricanes that he didn’t want to play there.

Rod Brind’Amour, passing through the Adam Gold Show, revealed that Rantanen was willing to play for four teams only… But not for the Hurricanes.

Eh boy.

When [Rantanen] arrived, he said: I want to play for four teams, and you are not one of them. – Rod Brind’Amour

To listen to Brind’Amour’s comments, you can click on the link just here.

The Hurricanes’ head coach was transparent in his comments.

But ultimately… in the end, it’s his organization that looks a little bad in all this.

The Hurricanes should have known, after all, that Rantanen was not interested in signing a long-term agreement before going to get him.

They should have done their homework properly to avoid all the fuss we’ve seen since the transaction.

They should have been certain that Rantanen wanted to stay in Carolina after being traded for the first time in his career.

Of course, Hurricanes fans have the right to be upset with the player. They saw one of their favorites leave in Martin Necas and Rantanen never seemed to be interested in playing in Carolina, which is disappointing in a way for the fans.

The story is settled, however. It’s time for the Hurricanes to move on – even if it’s easier said than done – because they still have the elements to succeed until the end of the season.

Extension

In all this, I also wonder why Rantanen didn’t want to play in Carolina.

It’s relatively warm all year round, the Hurricanes have a good group of players, there are Finns on the team like Sebastian Aho and Jesperi Kotkaniemi…

Oh well.

Nick Suzuki must be ready to eat minutes

Nick Suzuki is better off taking his Flintstones vitamins: his team will need him in top shape from now on until the end of the season. #Yabadabadou

I say this because Saturday was the ultimate proof that the captain is THE most important player on this team. If you remove Nick Suzuki from the lineup, the club would become lost.

Honorable mention to Mike Matheson, at that level. Without him, the blue line would be weak.

On Saturday, Nick Suzuki played on both power play waves. He spent over 24 minutes on the ice and was used in every way possible by his coach.

Do you think the coach’s message to his bosses was that he lacks help at center?

Suzuki, this season, has been paired with Kirby Dach as the number 2 center for most of the time. Owen Beck has also taken the number 2 center spot, playing poor minutes… and now, Alex Newhook is coming in.

These are not NHL-level number 2 centers. And Suzuki, who asked Kent Hughes not to trade anyone, knows that the depth at center is thin.

#Habs captain Nick Suzuki says it’s “nice and refreshing” to not see any teammates traded at the deadline this year

— Priyanta Emrith (@habsinhighheels.bsky.social) March 7, 2025, at 15:59

Everyone is aware that he will have to carry the team on his shoulders for the rest of the season. He will have to continue playing big minutes for his team to remain #InTheMix until the end of the season.

This shouldn’t scare him.

That being said, Martin St-Louis’ challenge will be to make sure he doesn’t burn out his captain. He can eat (and should eat) minutes, but he can’t get injured in the process – or play so much that he becomes useless.

The Habs wouldn’t gain from that.

Wins will come through him, but he will have to choose the moments to play 24 minutes per game. It will be a good challenge, and I imagine the management will also be keeping an eye on it.

If Alex Newhook can play more than Owen Beck did, it would help a bit, at the very least.

In a hurry

– Not crazy.

Pascal Vincent : what could save the CH and prevent it from going elsewhere

Pascal Vincent is an excellent hockey coach.

The Canadian, due to circumstances, was lucky to hire him this summer. The late departure of Jean-François Houle as pilot of the Rocket and Vincent’s dismissal in Columbus made the stars align.

And today, the Lavallois leads the best team in the LAH.

(Credit: The AHL)

By the force of circumstance, there are undoubtedly teams that will want to consider him in the NHL in a few months, whether as a head coach or as an assistant. We knew it was a possibility, but his beautiful season opens the door even wider to such a scenario.

And since we can think that the Canadian is not among the teams that will want to transform their coaching staff, there is a chance to see him leave Quebec (and the Canadian organization) this summer.

This is obviously not guaranteed since it will depend on the teams that are looking for staff. But it will also depend on the timing.

Because as Anthony Marcotte reminds us (on the airwaves of BPM Sports this morning) on the subject, if the Rocket has a good run in the series, Vincent could miss the window to discuss with other teams for a position in the NHL – like the coach of the Hershey Bears every year.

This will obviously depend on the circumstances, but it is quite possible that he will be too busy in the series in the LAH to be able to have interviews in the NHL at the same time.

Note, however, that if it’s as an assistant in the NHL, it can happen later in the off-season. We are mainly talking about one of the 32 head coach positions in the Bettman circuit.

But it’s still early for that. And it’s not a certainty either, since if a club really wants him, they can wait for the end of the Rocket’s season.

For now, Vincent and his players should not think about the NHL: they must focus on the race for the series. And I am convinced that the experienced coach knows this very well.

Rookie of the year: Lane Hutson leads the pack (according to NHL.com)

The last time a member of the Canadiens won the Calder Trophy, it was Ken Dryden in 1972. We will remember that the year before, he had won the Stanley Cup. You know, the time when the CH won the Cup?

So it’s been an eternity since the Canadiens haven’t had a Calder winner. And it’s possible that in 2025 and 2026, with Lane Hutson and Ivan Demidov, the Habs will have two winners in a row.

But for that, Hutson will have to keep playing well first. And then, we’ll see about Demidov in due time.

Currently, we know that four players stand out more than others for the Calder across the NHL. Besides Hutson, Macklin Celebrini (forward, Sharks), Matvei Michkov (forward, Flyers), and Dustin Wolf (goalie, Flames) are at the heart of the race.

And who will win?

The experts from NHL.com were polled to see what they think. A scoring system (five points for first place, four points for second place, three points for third place, two points for fourth place, and one point for fifth place) was used.

And according to 16 experts, it’s Hutson who is leading the vote with about 75% of the season behind us. He received 67 points in the NHL vote, one more than Macklin Celebrini, his former teammate in the NCAA.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by RDS (@rds)

Even if Celebrini had more first-place votes (seven against six), we observe that it’s the Canadiens’ rookie who is ahead of the Sharks’ rookie right now.

Can it change? Obviously. After all, Celebrini is quite a player.

But for now, since Hutson is a defenseman, he seems to have the lead. He leads the NHL in points among rookies despite his position, which is no small feat.

And it’s not like he’s doing it with a non-playoff team either…

(Credit: NHL.com)

Extension

Six first-place votes for Hutson… seven first-place votes for Celebrini… and the other three belong to the Flames’ goalie, who ranks third with 46 points.

That says a lot about Matvei Michkov (41 points in the NHL ranking), doesn’t it?

Joel Armia : expect to see the Canadiens negotiate to keep him

The Canadian is currently in a playoff race. It is three points away from a playoff spot.

Will the team manage to qualify? Will the team be #InTheMix until the end of the season? Will the team get reinforcements on the blue line (Kaiden Guhle) by the end of the season?

We’ll see.

But we can agree on one thing: even if Martin St-Louis would like to see his team make the playoffs now, he’s well aware that this summer, he’ll have more reinforcements in sight for the 2025-2026 season.

And I’m not just talking about Ivan Demidov: I’m talking about his GM who will be on the move.

It’s been a while since we understood that it’s in the summer of 2025 that the Canadian will take a step forward, as the moment has been targeted by management to take action to improve the team.

And that’s what Renaud Lavoie confirmed this morning on the airwaves of BPM Sports with the guys from the morning show.

But even if transactions like Dylan Cozens (not him specifically, of course, since he was traded to the Senators) are possible, we must not forget the small personnel movements.

They are important, too. And we can’t criticize a move for what it’s not: all signings can’t be an impact signing for a team.

All this to say that among the depth moves we might see in the coming months, there’s a potential signing of Joel Armia to keep him in town.

Renaud Lavoie, who was right in the negotiations for Evans, believes that we should expect to see Armia’s clan and the CH continue to negotiate for a potential contract extension.

Obviously, it wouldn’t be very expensive. Otherwise, goodbye.

Kent Hughes decided to keep the Finn in town, and we can imagine that he doesn’t want to lose him for nothing. Especially since his trio (with Jake Evans and Emil Heineman) is doing very well and making the coach happy.

Note, however, that we shouldn’t necessarily expect the same thing for Christian Dvorak, whose path to a new contract with the Canadian is more… difficult to see, let’s say.

No need to read between the lines to understand that with Nick Suzuki and Jake Evans being the only ones with a guaranteed spot at center next year (and considering that Ivan Demidov, Cole Caufield, and Juraj Slafkovsky will be in the top 6 in the long term), it’s a top center that the CH’s GM wants this summer.

In a hurry

– To note.

– Damn Brad.

– To follow.

– Mitch Marner situation: there’s a malaise. [TVAS]

– Good news.

Tony Marinaro could (already) be leaving BPM Sports

We’re already halfway through March.

The trade deadline is a thing of the past in the NHL, and the Canadiens have neither sold nor bought…

Despite everything, the team remains just three small points away from a playoff spot. They are three points away from a playoff spot.

CF Montreal has already played three games on the road, and they have lost all three.

And we have a new Prime Minister elected in Canada.

But mid-March is also the beginning of the final radio ratings in Montreal. In 11 weeks, the spring ratings – which are very important in radio – will be closed. And the star hosts of our Montreal stations will all be on vacation for the summer.

Rejean Tremblay, who continues to spend his days on the phone, searching for new exclusives, published a very good article this morning on PunchingGrace.

According to what Rejean has heard, Tony Marinaro is currently winding down the last few weeks of his one-year contract with BPM Sports… and he could leave the station to jump elsewhere next year.

BPM Sports, which is reportedly for sale according to Rejean – I can’t say more about this topic -, would lose a big piece if Tony were to leave the station. He has managed to solidify a block that has always been difficult to fill in the past; that of the mid-morning time slot.

Where could Marinaro end up if he doesn’t return to BPM?

Tony Marinaro perfectly complements the programming of BPM Sports.
(Credit: )

According to Rej, another podcast company has approached Tony with an attractive and even more interesting offer than what his Sick Podcast – which airs every night at 10:00 PM – brings in.

Given the connections between Maxim Lapierre and Tony, as well as the departure of Guillaume Latendresse – who won’t be returning to the airwaves, I’m told -, it’s easy to think that this other podcast is La Poche Bleue.

Why? Because Tony makes good money with his Sick Podcast, and I don’t see many podcasts that can offer him even more money. I could be wrong, but I think I’m right on target.

The Godfather also mentions another offer on the table… an offer that could make Tony Marinaro the next Ron Fournier. We can think that this other offer comes from 98.5 Sports and would make Tony the late-night guy on 98.5 FM.

I admit that the fit is there.

Except that the last time Tony dared to talk to me about his professional future, he told me he loved BPM Sports and its listeners. Tony has a free hand and enjoys himself on the mic at the French-language sports station. At equal pay – or almost -, I’m pretty convinced that Tony would stay at BPM.

But it’s easy to think that Cogeco can currently offer Tony a lot more money than RNC Media. What will Tony do? Will he opt for the security of Cogeco versus the insecurity of BPM Sports, if he indeed has offers from both stations?

Only he knows…

Tony wants to keep his English-language podcast
I know Tony well. I tried to call him this morning, but he didn’t answer. He must have been preparing for his morning show…

And I don’t call people before 8:30 AM, myself…

I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to try to get him to spill the beans during a commercial break; I’m a regular on Tony’s show every Tuesday.

But I know one thing: Tony has partnered with Samy Cavallero (Sick Media) for his Sick Podcast.

Samy is a 24-year-old man with muscular dystrophy. As long as Samy wants to continue the adventure with Tony, the latter will not let him down.

So I don’t see how Tony could become the next Ron Fournier since he’s already on the air at 10:00 PM on the English side…

I only see two options – other than extending his agreement with BPM Sports: being on the air between 6:30 PM and 9:00 PM on 98.5 FM (before games, on nights when the Canadiens are in action) or selling the Sick Podcast to a major.

Except that a major that opens its wallet would want to keep Tony at 10:00 PM, I assume.

In short, Tony has several offers on the table, and it will be interesting to see which path he chooses.

The BPM Sports schedule is solid this season with a complete morning show, a quality mid-morning show, a Laraque – Gonzalez duo that is very popular, and a return home appreciated by the most discerning listeners. Marinaro’s potential departure would leave a huge hole in the station’s programming…

Extension

Tony Marinaro is still under contract for another season with TVA Sports (JiC). He cannot do radio, podcast, or TV anywhere else between 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM.

The Canadian is three points from the series (and it could be worse tomorrow morning)

In recent weeks, the Canadiens have stayed in the playoff race thanks to their winning streak after the break. But for a few days now, it’s been more difficult.

It can do that when you’re only looking for one point out of a possible four in Alberta.

This means that this morning, the Canadiens are three points behind the Ottawa Senators and a spot in the playoffs. And three teams need to be overtaken to hope to see the CH make the playoffs.

(Credit: NHL.com)

Is it feasible at this point? Yes, it is. Is it likely? It depends if you think 9% chance of making the playoffs is “likely” or not.

In my opinion, it’s not likely.

Also, note that tonight, the Ottawa Senators and the Detroit Red Wings will face off. If Ottawa gets one or more points, the gap will be even wider.

And if the game goes to overtime…

The fact that the CH has lost some ground in the playoff race since Friday makes the clash of mentalities (for lack of a better term) between those who wanted to see the CH sell and those who wanted to see them buy (or not sell, at least) even more important.

After all, the path the CH has chosen to prioritize (pushing for the playoffs despite the low chances) is hard to quantify when compared to draft picks, which are more tangible.

But on the other hand, if an important free agent considers the Canadiens this summer because of the team’s nice climb up the standings in 2024-2025, maybe the GM will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Right now, it’s impossible to know.

All we know is that the club’s management understood the players’ message and believed in them. Now, it’s up to the players to play well to show that they deserve the trust placed in them.

Even if the team lacks depth (on Saturday, no healthy skater was left out by the team on the sidelines due to Patrik Laine’s absence), the players will continue to believe.

And that’s even if Michael Pezzetta is the team’s depth.

Logically, the last few days (a loss and another in overtime) have reminded us that a decrease in performance is not allowed for a team like the CH… but it’s normal to have some in a season. Especially for a team like the CH.

But no matter the obstacles, the players must continue to push in order to (try to) prove to Kent Hughes that he made the right decision in believing in them.

in a nutshell

– In real money, Brad Marchand doesn’t cost the Panthers much.

– Lane Hutson continues to show that he can become a great player. [NYT]

– Ouch.

Michael Hage does not know if his season is over

It was an important weekend for Michael Hage and the University of Michigan.

They were facing Penn State University in the quarterfinals of their conference tournament in the NCAA… But it didn’t go as planned.

Hage and his school lost their two games (6-5 and 5-2).

But despite everything, this doesn’t mean that the CH prospect’s season is necessarily over.

Even though his team was eliminated, he has a chance of being selected among the ten teams that will be invited to the NCAA national championship.

Nicolas Cloutier wrote about it in an article :

Each champion team from the six conferences gets their ticket to the big dance of American college hockey.

Then, ten other teams are invited to the tournament by a selection committee that uses specific criteria to select the best teams in the country. – Nicolas Cloutier

Because the University of Michigan is prestigious, has had success in recent years, and is among the top 20 best teams in the NCAA, it has a chance of being selected to participate in the national championship.

Note that the team selection will take place on March 23:

It’s certain that the Canadian would like that to happen.

After all, Hage would have the opportunity to add important games to his development.

And as a result, we know that the more he plays, the more chance he has to progress.

At the same time, Hage shouldn’t make the jump to the pros this year – unless there’s a big surprise – and that’s why from the CH’s side, it doesn’t change much.

It would have been different if Hage was a second-year player. Maybe the Canadian would have been disappointed to see his season extended in that case because they would have probably liked to see Hage arrive more quickly to give him a chance to gain experience.

But in the context where the young player hasn’t rushed anything, it’s logical to believe that he will stay. Hage finished his season with 34 points (13 goals) in 33 games, which is really respectable for an 18-year-old… But it’s not like he dominated the league either.

And on that subject, I have the impression that the Canadian wants to see him be dominant before he makes the jump to the pros.

Like it was with Cole Caufield and Lane Hutson… And like we’re seeing now with Jacob Fowler.

In a hurry

– Ah yes?

– I’ll believe it when I see it.

– Okay.

Joshua Roy recalled: Owen Beck is heading to Laval

Late breaking news.

The Canadian has announced the recall of Joshua Roy. And on the other side of the spectrum, Owen Beck, who has played several games in Montreal for a few weeks, is going to Laval.

The CH has just made the announcement.

More details to come…

Top-5 : 1600 points for Ovi, who is nine goals from breaking Gretzky’s record

There was action on Sunday in the NHL.

Eight games were on the schedule.

Let’s see what happened:

1: Ovi won’t stop

Alex Ovechkin was 10 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record before yesterday’s game.

This morning, he’s 9 goals away from breaking that record.

The Capitals’ captain scored his 33rd goal of the season in an empty net to secure the win for his team against the Seattle Kraken.

The Capitals won 5-2:

Ovechkin’s goal also marked his 1600th career point in the NHL.

He’s only the 11th player in history to achieve this feat.

Notably, the Capitals have 18 games left to play before the end of the calendar. If Ovi keeps up the pace, he’s going to break the record…

2: Stankoven and Rantanen stand out

Logan Stankoven played his first game with the Hurricanes yesterday.

And let’s say he knows how to make new friends.

The new player in Carolina scored his first goal with his new team and contributed to the Hurricanes’ 4-2 win against the Winnipeg Jets:

Meanwhile…

Mikko Rantanen tried to score his second goal in as many games with the Stars.

And that’s exactly what happened at the end of the game, when he took advantage of an empty net. The Stars won 4-1 against the Canucks:

Mikko Rantanen has 3 points in 2 games since joining Dallas.

He seems to be enjoying himself…

Notably, next Sunday, March 16, the Stars will visit the Colorado Avalanche.

Promising game ahead!

3: Perfect game for Crosby and Malkin

It was a special evening in Minnesota.

Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin played their last game against their old friend, Marc-André Fleury.

And they took advantage of it to score a goal each:

Marc-André Fleury would have probably liked to beat his former teammates in their last career matchup, but the Wild lost 3-1.

And it was Sidney Crosby (again) who scored in an empty net.

A perfect evening for the Penguins in Minnesota!

4: Hat trick for Hertl and Fantilli

Tomas Hertl was on fire yesterday.

Why do I say that?

Because he scored three goals in his team’s loss to the Kings.

The Golden Knights lost 6-5:

Scoring three goals in a losing cause is definitely frustrating…

But Adam Fantilli didn’t have to experience that disappointment.

The young Blue Jackets star also scored three goals, but his team beat the Rangers 7-3:

Two hat tricks in the same evening… You don’t see that often!

5: Better luck next time, Zegras

Trevor Zegras is a talented player.

He has skills and isn’t afraid to show them off.

Yesterday, against the Islanders, he tried a Michigan goal… But his move didn’t work:

The Ducks had fun against the poor Islanders, by the way.

This game shows why the Ducks won 4-1:

I couldn’t talk about this game without showing Mason McTavish’s goal, which gave the Ducks a 3-0 lead.

Because the quality of this shot deserves to be shared:
