Christian Dvorak and David Savard : “I would be surprised if they were traded”

The Canadian is in Buffalo tonight and including this game, there are only three left before the trade deadline (Friday, March 7).

Naturally, at the CH, we will have to keep an eye on Jake Evans, Joel Armia, Christian Dvorak, and David Savard, all of whom are unrestricted free agents.

Who will leave and who will stay? According to Renaud Lavoie, Savard and Dvorak will stay. At least, he would be surprised if they were traded. That’s what he mentioned during the first period.

Several teams could be in the running for Savard.

After all, even if he has slowed down, he remains a good defensive defenseman, and on a third pair, a contending team could acquire him at a good price.

But it’s not at any price that Kent Hughes will get rid of his Quebec defender. After all, for a fourth-round pick or worse, it’s just as well to keep him and help the team in its playoff run. And maybe at a good price, he could stay in Montreal for next season.

He’s a good veteran, a good teammate, and a guy who doesn’t hurt anyone. At worst, he would be the seventh defenseman next year… He won’t ask for the moon.

As for Dvorak, I don’t think he’ll find a taker before next Friday either. If so, Hughes risks keeping part of his salary (he can still do so for a player until June 30, 2025).

A Dvorak transaction with 25% of his salary for a fifth-round pick is the best Montreal could have, in my opinion.

The center earns $4.45 million until the end of the season, and the problem is not keeping salary or trading it for a distant draft pick, but rather team spirit. Indeed, he is a good teammate and a good friend to Cole Caufield, among others, and without Kirby Dach and potentially Jake Evans, Dvo would be important for the team’s center line to make sense…

In a hurry

– He can’t wait to come to North America.

– What a tweet!

– Wow haha.

– Big trade in the NFL.

– His counterpart also did well.

Jake Evans has one goal in his last 23 games

When thinking of Jake Evans, one thinks of a guy who is mainly there to excel in a support role. And once again this year, he accomplished this mission with brilliance, being a force in several areas, including being strong when his team is at a numerical disadvantage.

He is one of Martin St-Louis’s trusted players, and for good reason: he takes pressure off the shoulders of his teammates.

That being said, what is particular this season is that the forward has found a scoring touch. After all, at the beginning of 2025, he already had 10 goals, a very solid harvest for a guy who doesn’t even play on the power play.

However, what’s noticeable two months later is that Evans’ scoring touch has… visibly disappeared.

In fact, the Canadiens’ forward has only one goal since December 31. That’s a sequence of 23 games.

At the end of December, Evans had scored a goal in five consecutive games. He was scoring on about 30% of his shots, a ridiculously high percentage that was bound to come down… and it has come down spectacularly since.

It’s interesting to see that a good part of this drought occurred during the absence of Emil Heineman, his linemate.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Evans has become useless, far from it. He continues to be an important piece of Martin St-Louis’s team… but it’s still true that if we extrapolate this sample of 23 games over a 82-game season, we’re talking about a pace of less than four goals per season.

And in the context where he is reportedly asking for $20 million over five years, that doesn’t look very good, as good as he is defensively.

But despite all I’ve just said, I still think the following: the Canadiens wouldn’t make a bad decision if they didn’t trade Jake Evans before the trade deadline. I’m not saying Kent Hughes must absolutely keep him if he’s offered the moon for Evans, but the latter, even without a long-term contract as of yet, has value in town that’s superior to another draft pick.

In the best-case scenario, time will bring Evans and the Canadiens closer together in negotiations (especially since Evans’ recent offensive drought shouldn’t give his agent many arguments right now), and the two parties will agree on a long-term deal to keep a loved teammate and a support player developed by the CH in town. In the worst-case scenario, he will have been a “rental player” who helped compensate for the loss of Kirby Dach by not putting too much on the shoulders of the Tricolore’s young players.

– The better he is, the less pressure the CH has to sign Evans.

– A serious audition for Owen Beck.

– Wow!

– The emotions we’re experiencing right now.

– What a machine.

– David Pastrnak in 2025: 22 games, 19 goals, 19 assists, leading the NHL in goals and points. Even with the slow start, he’s still on pace for 101 points.

– Gary Bettman wants an outdoor game in Utah.

Bettman reiterates the NHL’s working with Utah on getting an outdoor game in the not-too-distant future.

Away game: Blue Jackets players arrive dressed “like Johnny Gaudreau”

Since the sad passing of the Gaudreau brothers last summer, the hockey world has made sure to honor the memory of the two men as best as possible. The family has touched a ton of people in the community, and we don’t want to forget the two men.

Even recently, at the 4 Nations Confrontation, the fans chanted “Johnny Hockey” at the end of the game during the final. It was a beautiful moment.

But of course, in Columbus, they’re making a special effort in that regard. Johnny Gaudreau played with the Blue Jackets, after all (he had decided to sign there as a free agent), and he was extremely loved in Ohio.

The club even invited his mom on the team’s mothers’ trip this week.

And today, as the Blue Jackets face the Red Wings in an away game, the team had an excellent idea: the guys decided to all dress up “like Johnny Gaudreau”.

And with the Gaudreau family leading the players’ entrance into the stadium, it makes for some really nice images.

The players are all dressed the same way, and instead of just wearing Gaudreau’s jersey, the guys decided to dress like Gaudreau usually dresses in everyday life.

Boone Jenner, the team captain, notes that they were dressed with “Johnny’s signature outfit”. I like it.

Let’s remember that the game between the Jackets and the Wings will start at 6 pm tonight at Ohio Stadium, the football stadium of Ohio State University (or Ohio State). We’re talking about a stadium that can accommodate… over 100,000 fans.

This will be something.

That being said, seeing Johnny Gaudreau and his family being honored in this way during an away game, it shows once again how well the Blue Jackets (and the rest of the league) do things.

Hats off.

– When Steven Stamkos gives a goal… to Ilya Sorokin.

– Nice gesture.

Matvei Michkov: since the resumption, he is the only one who is ahead of Nick Suzuki in the NHL

Matvei Michkov’s season in Philadelphia has been, shall we say, quite particular so far. The talented forward has had some very good moments… but he has also had a few run-ins with John Tortorella.

And before the Four Nations Showdown break, Michkov looked like a guy who was struggling. Points were no longer coming easily, his ice time was decreasing, and he looked like a guy who needed a break.

The big question, then, was how he would bounce back from all this… and the answer is very, very encouraging. In fact, since the resumption of activities, Michkov has played three games… and he has amassed three goals and eight points during this sequence.

This is exactly the same production as Nick Suzuki… and the two guys are leading the NHL in points per game since the resumption. Clayton Keller (9) and Jason Robertson (8) are also racking up points, but they have played one more game than Suzuki and Michkov.

And since the month was shortened, seeing him have such a strong sequence means that Michkov has been named Rookie of the Month in the NHL.

Of course, for the Flyers, seeing the young forward come back strong like this is encouraging. He seems to have developed very good chemistry with Sean Couturier, and it shows in Michkov’s production.

After all, in Montreal, we can see how unstoppable Suzuki has been for three games. In Philadelphia, we see the same thing… from a rookie player.

The sample size is obviously very small, so we need to be cautious. That being said, it doesn’t change the fact that with his recent successful sequence, Michkov has returned to the top of the Calder Trophy race.

Because after all, he has caught up with Lane Hutson in first place among rookie scorers in the NHL this season.

(Credit: Screenshot/NHL.com)

With Macklin Celebrini continuing to play great hockey (except when Cole Caufield has his say) and Dustin Wolf still solid in the Flames’ net, we really have a four-way race for the Calder Trophy right now… and this race could go on until the very end of the regular season.

But if Michkov continues to score points at an incredible rate, the other rookies will have their work cut out to keep up.

In a rush

– Talking about young Russian forwards.

– Alex Ovechkin’s 884th career goal.

– Gustav Nyquist officially joins the Wild. The Predators, who retain half of the salary, get a second-round pick in 2026 in return.

– Well done.

Josh Anderson will face the Sabres tonight

It’s been a while that Josh Anderson has been playing while injured. The Canadiens’ forward, who is a source of inspiration for the team right now, is clearly bothered by something (his back?), but he’s still showing up to play.

He hardly ever practices and seems to get re-injured during games, but he still finds a way to contribute.

We were wondering if Anderson, who traveled to Buffalo with the team, would face the Sabres tonight…

And in the end, we have the answer: he will be there.

Anderson spoke to the media today, a pretty clear sign that he would be playing tonight… and in an article by RDS, it was confirmed that he will be in uniform.

More details to come…

Ivan Demidov nailed to the bench: his coach throws him a jab about his “collective effort”

Thursday, Ivan Demidov was benched by his team in a 1-0 loss for SKA. In a game where the club lost, not giving a single second of ice time to the team’s top scorer this season seems strange, but that’s what Roman Rotenberg decided to do.

And inevitably, it brings back bad memories from the start of the season, where Demidov’s ice time was a serious problem.

That being said, even if it sparked a reaction in Montreal, it also sparked a reaction in Russia. After all, the media covering SKA also had the same question: why bench Demidov?

They questioned Rotenberg on the subject during a press conference, and Demidov’s coach, in a long response, seemed to criticize the young player’s “collective effort”:

Ivan can become one of the best in the world, but he must work hard for the team. Then, he will be able to bring great benefits to the team. – Roman Rotenberg

In today’s press conference, Roman Rotenberg said that Ivan Demidov will play in the next game, compared him to Kirill Kaprizov and said that he needs to work for the team, as Kirill did pic.twitter.com/3DqsOsQ3U1
— Милена (@D1VDsAGUJsk2iPk) February 27, 2025

What seems to be understood by listening to all this is that by “collective effort”, Rotenberg is talking about Demidov’s defensive effort. In his last game before being benched, he finished the game with a -3 differential, and he finished three of the last four games with a negative differential.

Is it possible that by benching him, Rotenberg wanted to send a message to Demidov that he needs to give more defensively? Possible.

Rotenberg also notes that Demidov has been heavily targeted by opposing players for a while and that it’s becoming physically demanding for him. In theory, this is another valid reason, but…

There’s also a world where the coach jumped on the first rational excuse to justify all this when, in reality, it’s a pressure tactic to force him to sign a long-term contract. We know the club has done it earlier this season, after all.

The real answer, only SKA really knows. That being said, we’ll see if, as the coach claims, Demidov will be back in action (and not just on the bench) during the team’s next games. And if he finishes another game with a very negative differential, we’ll see if the song remains the same.

– Ryan Lindgren is heading to Colorado.

– Gustav Nyquist: keep an eye on the Wild.

Nashville and Minnesota are talking about a potential Gustav Nyquist trade, per sources, which is why he’s being held out today. But the trade is still not done. Could be a complication. Let’s see where it goes.

File Jake Evans: Devils still looking for a player of his profile

There is now less than a week before the March 7 trade deadline, and in exactly six days, all NHL teams will be set for the end of the season and the playoffs.

Naturally, until Friday, rumors will continue to escalate throughout the NHL, and this will be about different cases.

Several players may change addresses, as is the case every year, and it will once again be very interesting to watch.

The entire week may be very exciting, and already today, it’s the beginning of players being left out in connection with a potential trade.

Indeed, the Nashville Predators will leave Gustav Nyquist out tonight to avoid him getting injured in view of an imminent trade.

And on the Montreal Canadiens’ side, we could very well see this kind of situation in the coming days, especially concerning Jake Evans.

The center player has a strong chance of being traded, as there is a lot of interest in him on the trade market.

Moreover, the New Jersey Devils, who were already interested in Evans over a month ago, are still looking for a player with Evans’ profile.

In fact, as can be read in a recent article by RG Media, the Devils will be very aggressive until the trade deadline, as they want to improve in several areas.

And one of their cases is to add a depth center capable of playing in a top-9, mainly in the “middle 6”, or on a second or third line.

This is exactly what Evans represents, and therefore, there is clearly a strong link to establish between Jake Evans and the Devils.

All of this remains to be followed closely, but it is clear that a trade could occur between the Canadiens and the Devils, and it is therefore necessary to continue monitoring the situation very closely.

If the Devils decide to make a good offer to the Canadiens, and especially an offer that matches the price demanded by Kent Hughes, Evans could pack his bags for Newark.

In short, let’s see if Evans will be left out in the coming days, either on Monday against the Buffalo Sabres or on Thursday against the Oilers in Edmonton.

I didn’t mention tonight’s game, as for now, nothing indicates that Jake Evans will be left out.

In Brief

– Note.

– All is well for Fantilli.

– Incredible.

Sean Farrell is the best scorer in the American League for the past 10 games

The Laval Rocket is really having an excellent season in the American League.

Pascal Vincent has one of the best teams in the American League, and it shows night after night, as the Rocket wins almost all of its games.

This explains why Laval is at the top of the American League, only four points behind the Rochester Americans, who have played two more games than the Rocket.

In short, everything is going well for the Rocket right now, and that’s also true for most of the team’s players on an individual level.

The big guns like Alex Barré-Boulet and Joshua Roy are performing, and the supporting players are continuing their good work.

But amidst all this, there’s another name that stands out with the Rocket right now, and that’s Sean Farrell.

After having a horrible start to the season with no points in his first 11 games, and only nine points in 37 games, Farrell has been on fire for a few games.

So much on fire that he’s the top scorer in the American League over the last 10 games, with 15 points.

This is an incredible streak for Farrell, who is greatly benefiting from the few injuries and Owen Beck’s recall to Montreal to play in the top 6.

Since he started playing a lot of minutes in the top 6, Farrell has been unstoppable and is currently one of the Rocket’s best players.

This is really a redemption for Farrell, who was struggling earlier in the season, when everything seemed to be moving too fast and was too physical for him in this league.

He has completely turned things around, and this is excellent news for the entire organization, as Farrell was already seen as one of the Montreal Canadiens’ top prospects.

Obviously, I’m not saying that Farrell is back among the top prospects, but his current streak puts him back on the map, allowing everyone to regain some hope in him.

At 23 years old, Farrell is getting old, and it’s really time for him to dominate the American League if he wants to still hope to make his way to the NHL.

His 24 points (12 goals and 12 assists) in 47 games are below his 28 points (9 goals and 19 assists) in 47 games last season, so it will take a huge progression for Farrell to aspire to the NHL again.

The end of the Rocket’s season and the playoffs will be crucial for Farrell’s future, in order to give him the best possible resume for the Canadiens’ next training camp.

A potential trial with the Canadiens before the end of the season could also be beneficial for him, considering the potential departures from Montreal with the trade deadline.

In Rafale

– It’s nice to see.

– Indeed.

– The cannon is ready.

– Very cool.

– To follow today.

– New rule in soccer.

Without Kirby Dach and Jake Evans, Christian Dvorak would become important

For a second consecutive campaign, Kirby Dach will have suffered a right knee injury that drastically ended his season.

At least this time, Dach will have played 57 games, and not two games.

However, the loss of number 77 hurts the Montreal Canadiens a lot, even if Dach was not performing at the expected level this season.

And let’s say that if it hurts the CH and the fans, imagine how much it hurts for Kirby Dach, whose morale must be at -1000 right now, after all the bad luck in the last two seasons.

He had such a promising future, and he had shown such great things in his first season with the Tricolore, that in the end, he is a player that nobody wants, because he is fragile.

It’s really a shame, and let’s say that it puts the CH in a very delicate situation, as they have to start looking for a second center again.

They will have to find a long-term solution, which is not a gamble like Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook, but rather a certainty.

Now, in the short term, they need to find a solution as well, especially with the potential departure of Jake Evans.

Owen Beck is fine, but it will take someone else to play center, and that’s where Christian Dvorak, against all expectations, could have great importance.

In fact, even if all fans are eager for Dvorak to leave, with Kirby Dach’s injury and Jake Evans’ increasingly likely trade departure, someone has to take on a center role in the top-9 and even in the top-6.

If Kent Hughes was counting on trading Dvorak and Evans by March 7, well, Dach’s long-term injury has probably changed the general manager’s plans.

Dvorak’s value is certainly lower, and so, rather than getting a fourth-round pick, it’s better to keep him and avoid putting the Laval Rocket in trouble.

Why am I talking about the Rocket?

Because logically, if Dach, Evans, and Dvorak are no longer there after March 7, it’s Rocket players who will come to fill those center positions in Montreal.

And that’s clearly not ideal, considering that Laval is one of the best teams in the American League, and they’re preparing for a potentially long playoff run.

Weakening Pascal Vincent’s team would not be a good idea.

So, keeping Dvorak becomes important, because otherwise, the Tricolore would impact the success of its farm team too much.

CH alignment without Dach, Evans, and Dvorak:

Caufield – Suzuki – Slafkovsky
Laine – Beck – Newhook
Anderson – ??? – Gallagher
Pezzetta – ??? – Armia (if he’s not traded)

The CH would need three Rocket players if Evans, Dvorak, and even Armia leave, whereas they would need only two, and for a fourth line if Dvorak stays.

The options would be numerous, as the CH could either recall veterans like Lucas Condotta, Alex Barré-Boulet, Rafaël Harvey-Pinard, or Laurent Dauphin.

Or they could give chances to young players like Jared Davidson, Sean Farrell, or Joshua Roy.

In short, the options are very numerous, but they would all directly impact the Rocket’s success.

So, it’s better to keep Dvorak and avoid recalling too many players from the Rocket.

Who would have thought that Christian Dvorak would become important, even indispensable…

In a Hurry

– Not to be missed. The Stadium Series game will have a crucial importance in the battle for the playoffs in the East.

– The Lions are in action today.

– To follow.
